North Korea Escalates Rhetoric Following Reports of New Nuclear Activity

Despite President Donald Trump’s compromises, Pyongyang says new U.S.-South Korean military activity poses “an open challenge” to it.

NORTH KOREA ON THURSDAY blasted new, smaller-scale U.S.-South Korea military exercises as an "open challenge" to the aspiration of Pyongyang, seemingly rejecting what had been a key compromise President Donald Trump made following a summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un last month.

The fiery rhetoric followed numerous reports this week that North Korea has begun new activity to bolster its nuclear weapons program, despite White House assurances following the high profile February meeting in Vietnam that Kim was committed to denuclearization.

"The ill-boding moves of the south Korean military authorities and the U.S. are a wanton violation of the DPRK-U.S. joint statement and the north-south declarations in which the removal of hostility and tensions were committed to," North Korean state news service KCNA wrote, using its preferred acronym for itself. The statement described the new downsized exercises as "an open challenge to the aspiration and desire of all Koreans and the international community for peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula."

The statement represents a troubling escalation following South Korean media reports of new activity at a North Korean intercontinental ballistic missile plant in recent days, the same site Trump has said he would be disappointed to see rebuilt. Senior officials at the South Korean National Intelligence Service reported the movement of cargo vehicles around the Sanumdong factory in Pyongyang, according to the JoongAng Ilbo and Donga Ilbo newspapers.

NBC News, citing new details from the Center for Strategic and International Studies, reported earlier this week that North Korea was rapidly rebuilding its Sohae Satellite Launch facility and showed activity that is "consistent with preparations for a test." The site houses the technology that, if successful, could launch a missile capable of reaching the U.S.

When asked about the NBC report on Wednesday, Trump said he would "be very disappointed if that were happening," and falsely claimed that the White House had already released information about the new activity at the missile sites.

"I would be very, very disappointed in Chairman Kim and I don't think I will be, but we'll see what happens. We'll take a look. It'll ultimately get solved," Trump said.

While some applaud the increased dialogue between the U.S. and the notoriously isolated kingdom, Trump has come under criticism for organizing such a high profile summit with Kim without a clear mandate for what they could accomplish, and ultimately walking away from it prematurely and without an agreement. North Korea watchers fear the publicity gave further legitimacy to the Kim regime – considered the principle reason why the young hermetic leader has pushed for the development of functional nuclear weapons during his rule.

Trump's decision to scale back military exercises with South Korea – or "war games" as both he and Kim call them – such as the high profile Foal Eagle drills that involve upwards of 10,000 sea, air and ground-based troops, essentially adopted a Chinese suggestion known as "freeze for freeze," in which the U.S. would reduce its high-profile training operations with Seoul in exchange for North Korean denuclearization. While the exercises are designed to prepare the U.S.-South Korean alliance for the case of actual conflict, some experts say downsizing them will damage relations between the two countries over concerns Trump is prioritizing relations with Kim over South Korean security.

Then-U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley ridiculed the proposal last year as "insulting," saying at an emergency Security Council meeting, "When a rogue regime has a nuclear weapon and an [intercontinental ballistic missile] pointed at you, you do not take steps to lower your guard."

GOOD NEWS, EVERYONE

Our planet just set a scary new carbon dioxide record

Our planet’s level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere reached a new, jarring record last month. Scientists from Scripps Institution of Oceanography announcedon Tuesday that February’s average carbon dioxide measurement was 411.66 parts per million as measured in Mauna Loa, Hawaii.

Since humanity’s greenhouse gas emissions were at an all-time high last year, a new record was expected. What was shocking was that it occurred so early in the year: Earth’s carbon dioxide levels typically peak in May, when the vast northern forests of North America and Asia are just beginning to green up. Setting a new record in February is “rare,” according to Scripps.

“In most years, the previous maximum is surpassed in March or April. The February record breaking is a measure of just how fast CO2 has been rising in the past months,” said Scripps CO2 Group Director Ralph Keeling, in a statement. The suddenness of this year’s record is the result of “the combination of weak El Nino conditions and unprecedented emissions from fossil-fuel burning,” according to Keeling.

This year’s carbon dioxide level is expected to peak around 415 parts per million in May.

There hasn’t been this much carbon dioxide in our planet’s atmosphere since before cars started clogging the roads a century ago, before agriculture was developed 10,000 years ago, and before modern humans evolved more than a million years ago. We have reached not only a new phase of civilizational history, but a new phase of our species’ history.

In recent years, the rise in the planet’s carbon dioxide levels has picked up speed. That’s in line with scientists’ predictions of a planet creeping toward dangerous and irreversible tipping points, and highlights the dangers of collective foot-dragging on shifting to a carbon-free economy.

NewsReal #29: What Israeli Lobby? Anti-Semitism Hysteria Hits US, UK, France

Three capitals, three countries, three tales of Jews maligned. At the same time.

Mania for 'anti-anti-semitism' hit all-time highs in the US recently thanks to uproar over comments made by freshman congresswoman Ilhan Omar suggesting that pro-Israel lobby groups exert undue influence on American politics. Whether contrived or spontaneous, public debate led to a concerted effort - for now canned - to legally conflate anti-semitism with criticism of Israel.

It's remarkable enough that proscribed speech may be instituted in the USA, but what's even more remarkable is that the French government just last month announced its intention to likewise broaden the legal definition anti-semitism to include criticism of Israel, and that it did so in response to the 5-month-long Yellow Vest anti-government protest movement.

Finally, politics and media coverage in the UK has of late been all but saturated by endless claims that opposition party leader Jeremy Corbyn is an anti-semite because he does not specifically condemn Israel's Middle East foes Hamas and Hezbollah. Remarkably, this occurs at a time when the UK is undergoing a profound constitutional crisis due to 'Brexit' and its ramifications for the unity of the UK as such.

In this NewsReal, Joe & Niall discuss the highly dangerous strategy Western governments are taking in pushing Jews front and center of fractious national debates.

Top Russian MP compares Trump to Hitler, warns of new war

Two years of Donald Trump’s presidency has brought the international situation back to the moment when Hitler came to power, according to three-star Russian General Vladimir Shamanov.

Speaking at a briefing for foreign military attaches, Shamanov recalled that Hitler had begun preparing Germany for war just two years after coming to power. “Trump has been at the helm for two years, and we see the parallels,” he said.

The general, who is head of the lower house’s Committee on Defense, also warned non-nuclear nations that participation in US-led nuclear drills could make them the target of a retaliatory strike by Russia in the event of conflict.

“Along with regular weapons, Americans could stock you with nuclear ones,” he explained. “We have to take it into account and you could become our priority strike targets, you have to be aware of it.”

The “eagerness” of some European countries to deploy military assets on their territories “raises eyebrows,” Shamanov added.

Head of the Defense Committee Vladimir Shamanov held a briefing for the military attaches accredited in .
The briefing was attended by over a hundred military diplomats.

Military attaches from 90 countries attended the annual briefing in the lower house of Russia’s parliament, which the general noted was a higher attendance than usual. However, the US delegation didn’t respond to an invitation“for the first time in many years,” he added.

Global Economy Hits Its Weakest Spell Since Financial Crisis

Global Economy Hits Its Weakest Spell Since Financial Crisis

(Bloomberg) -- The global economy’s sharp loss of speed through 2018 has left the pace of expansion the weakest since the global financial crisis a decade ago, according to Bloomberg Economics.

Its new GDP tracker puts world growth at 2.1 percent on a quarter-on-quarter annualized basis, down from about 4 percent in the middle of last year. While there’s a chance that the economy may find a foothold and arrest the slowdown, “the risk is that downward momentum will be self-sustaining,” say economists Dan Hanson and Tom Orlik.

The reasons for hope? The Federal Reserve’s decision to pause its interest-rate hikes, a U.S.-China trade truce and the fading of the shocks that battered Europe in 2018 could mean stabilization is around the corner. Other central banks have also stepped up, with the European Central Bank last week announcing new measures to help the economy through the current weakness.

But the global economy is not out of the woods. The OECD’s latest composite leading indicator -- published Monday -- indicates easing momentum in the U.S., the U.K., Canada, and the euro area as a whole, including Germany and Italy. There are, however, signs of stabilization in China.

Despite the gloom, ECB policy makers have been keen to put a brave face on the deterioration, pushing the view the euro zone is experiencing a slowdown, not a recession.

“We are still seeing robust economic growth, although it’s less strong than before,” Executive Board member Benoit Coeure said in an interview with Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera published Monday. “It will take longer for inflation to reach our objective, but it will get there. We are reacting to the developments we have seen so far.”

What Bloomberg Economists Say

“The cyclical upswing that took hold of the global economy in mid-2017 was never going to last. Even so, the extent of the slowdown since late last year has surprised many economists, including us.”

Click here for the full report by Hanson and Orlik.

There has been a modest pickup in some economic numbers recently, though also high-profile disappointments. U.S. retail sales rose in January after the biggest fall in almost a decade in December. A measure that some view as a cleaner gauge of consumer demand jumped 1.1 percent.

Last week, the U.S. reported employers added the fewest jobs in more than two years. There may have been one-off factors to blame, but the scale of the miss puts in focus the idea that the economy’s losing steam.

In Germany, industrial output unexpectedly fell in January, though a large upward revision to December nullified some of the gloom. A manufacturing index points to an extended slump, and production has posted year-on-year declines three months in a row.

(Updates with U.S. retail sales in seventh paragraph.)
