White House denies petition to deport Piers Morgan

Piers Morgan and Alex Jones on CNN (CNN)Piers Morgan and Alex Jones on CNN (CNN)

The White House has responded to the petition seeking the deportation of Piers Morgan with a statement from press secretary Jay Carney explaining the First Amendment.

The petition, which received well over 100,000 signatures (25,000 are required for a White House response) was led by conservative radio host Alex Jones. He wrote, "British Citizen and CNN television host Piers Morgan is engaged in a hostile attack against the U.S. Constitution by targeting the Second Amendment. We demand that Mr. Morgan be deported immediately for his effort to undermine the Bill of Rights and for exploiting his position as a national network television host to stage attacks against the rights of American citizens."

In Carney's statement explaining the White House's decision to allow Morgan to remain in the U.S., he acknowledges that the Second Amendment does guarantee citizens the right to bear arms, but reiterates the First Amendment guarantees the freedom of the press.

Carney wrote:

Americans may disagree on matters of public policy and express those disagreements vigorously, but no one should be punished by the government simply because he or she expressed a view on the Second Amendment—or any other matter of public concern.

We recognize that the tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut, sparked an intense, and at times emotional, national conversation about the steps we can take as a country to reduce gun violence. In fact, your petition is one of many on the issue, and President Obama personally responded by sharing his views on this important issue.

Earlier this week, Jones appeared on Morgan's CNN program where he declared, "1776 will commence again if you try to take our firearms! America was born on guns and whiskey. It's true we're a violent society. ... You're a foreigner. You're a redcoat. You're telling us what to do."

Obama could turn to 'executive action' on gun control, his No. 2 says

WASHINGTON - U.S. President Barack Obama intends to take serious action on gun control even if it means circumventing Congress and issuing executive orders to do so, Joe Biden suggested Wednesday.

"The president is going to act," the vice-president, who's heading a task force on gun control for his boss, said before meeting with gun control advocates and victims of gun violence.

"There are executive orders, executive action that can be taken. We haven't decided what that is yet, but we're compiling it all."

Last month's horrifying mass shooting in Newtown, Conn., which claimed the lives of 20 six- and seven-year-olds, has necessitated "immediate, urgent action," Biden added.

The massacre of those Grade One pupils with a legally purchased, high-powered rifle has affected Americans "in a way like nothing I've seen in my career," he said.

Colin Goddard, who was shot four times in the 2007 Virginia Tech massacre, was among those meeting with Biden on Wednesday.

"My job is to represent the voice of the overwhelming majority of Americans ... that want some comprehensive, common-sense changes to our gun policy," said Goddard, who now works for the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence.

In the wake of Biden's warning, however, gun rights activists still have reason to breathe easy — there's scant action available to the Obama administration without Congress.

Obama and Democrats are pushing for the reinstatement of an assault weapons ban.

The White House would also like to see measures that include mandating universal background checks for firearm buyers, tracking the movement and sale of weapons through a national database, beefing up mental health checks and toughening penalties for carrying guns near schools or giving them to minors.

For almost all of those measures, the president needs lawmakers behind him.

Executive orders would only allow Obama to make changes to federal mental health programs and to modernize gun-tracking efforts by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

He might also be able to push through initiatives to track the mental illness histories of gun-owners and to implement more information-sharing between and state and local law enforcement agencies.

On Thursday, Biden meets with representatives of the powerful National Rifle Association, the country's biggest gun rights lobby.

The NRA's deep pockets have long served to persuade members of Congress to oppose gun control bills.

Earlier this week, Gabrielle Giffords, the former Arizona congresswoman shot in the head by a would-be assassin two years ago, unveiled a new group aimed at countering the NRA.

Obama hopes to announce his administration's gun reform measures shortly after his inauguration on Jan. 21.

The inaugural weekend festivities might be disrupted by a coalition of conservative and gun-rights groups organizing a "Gun Appreciation Day" on the weekend of the inauguration. The group is calling on people to visit gun stores, gun ranges and gun shows with U.S. flags and "Hands off my gun" signs.

A longtime advocate of gun control himself during his three decades as a senator, Biden's remarks on Wednesday set off an immediate firestorm among gun rights activists, with the right-wing Drudge Report even comparing Obama to Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin.

Gun rights advocates often assert that Nazi Germany banned guns before embarking upon the Second World War and the Holocaust. Several of them have made the allegation while appearing on various news shows in the aftermath of the Newtown shooting.

But in fact, Hitler loosened gun laws in 1938 so that German citizens —although not Jews or supposed enemies of the state — could buy handguns with simple hunters' permits.

Biden to meet with NRA to discuss gun safety

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration is sitting down with gun owners groups — including the National Rifle Association — as officials look at ways to curb gun violence.

Vice President Joe Biden, who is leading an administration-wide review of gun safety laws, has vowed urgent action in the wake of last month's massacre at a Connecticut elementary school.

The meeting with the NRA is one of three Biden has scheduled for Thursday, as he prepares to make recommendations on gun policy by the end of the month. Besides the NRA, Biden and other officials are meeting with sportsmen and wildlife interest groups, as well as people from the entertainment industry.

The NRA, the nation's largest gun-rights group, has blocked gun-control efforts in the past and is opposing any new ones.

Shortly after last month's shooting in Newtown, Conn., President Barack Obama tasked Biden with heading a commission to come up with recommendations on gun policy by the end of January. Obama supports steps including reinstating a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines and closing loopholes that allow many gun buyers to avoid background checks.

Biden, who met with representatives of victims groups and gun-safety organizations Wednesday, said officials are considering steps that could "take thousands of people out of harm's way" and improve the safety of millions more.

"I want to make it clear that we are not going to get caught up in the notion that unless we can do everything, we're going to do nothing," Biden told groups including the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. "It's critically important we act."

Biden faces a tougher audience when the NRA joins other gun-owner groups and retailers including Wal-Mart. NRA officials didn't return messages for comment Wednesday, but the group's executive vice president, Wayne LaPierre, has dismissed the assault weapons ban as "a phony piece of legislation" and has recommended putting armed guards in all schools as a way to stop another school shooting.

Biden said he wanted to hear from "all parties, on whatever side of this debate you fall."

In a nod to political realities that could imperil sweeping gun-control legislation, Biden said the administration is weighing executive action in addition to recommending legislation by Congress.

Recommendations to the Biden group include making gun-trafficking a felony, getting the Justice Department to prosecute people caught lying on gun background-check forms and ordering federal agencies to send data to the National Gun Background Check Database.

The Brady Campaign says that some 40 percent of gun sales are made without background checks, such as at gun shows and over the Internet.

The shootings in Newtown, in which 20 children and six adults were killed by a man with a military-style semiautomatic rifle, have prodded the administration to act. Obama had remained largely silent on gun control after the 2011 shootings in Tucson, Ariz., that killed six people and wounded 12 others, including then-Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, and the Colorado movie theater killing of a dozen people and wounding of many more last July.

Biden, referring to the Newtown shootings, said at the White House, "Every once in a while, there's something that awakens the conscience of the country, and that tragic event did it in a way like nothing I've seen in my career."

Biden said he and Obama are determined to take action.

"We can affect the well-being of millions of Americans and take thousands of people out of harm's way if we act responsibly," he said.

The president hopes to announce his administration's next steps to tackle gun violence shortly after he is sworn in for a second term.

3 defendants in brutal gang rape in Indian capital will plead not guilty, lawyer says

NEW DELHI - A lawyer for three suspects in the brutal rape and killing of a young woman in New Delhi says they will plead not guilty in the case that has transfixed India and raised questions about the treatment of women.

Manohar Lal Sharma says he represents bus driver Ram Singh, Ram Singh's brother Mukesh, and another man, Akshay Thakur. The lawyer spoke briefly on his way into a New Delhi court complex for a hearing for those accused of attacking the woman on the bus in India's capital.

Thursday's hearing is expected to result in the case being sent to a special "fast-track" court. India's legal system is notoriously slow and inefficient, but officials are eager to make sure the high-profile case moves quickly.
