Syrian army troops have liberated more towns in southwestern Syria from the foreign-backed Takfiri militants.

Syria's official news agency SANA reported that the government forces raised the Syrian flag in the town of Jubata al-Khashab, Quneitra province, on Wednesday, a day after militants were evacuated under a deal with Damascus. Jubata al-Khashab was a stronghold of militants.

According to the report, the last batch of militants who refused to reconcile with the government left the town with their families and headed to northern Syria on Tuesday.98

In the neighboring province of Dara’a, the Syrian army gained ground too, retaking the town of Qasir from the Daesh Takfiri terrorist group.

SANA said the town was the terrorists’ last stronghold in Dara’a.

The government advances come as President Bashar al-Assad said the final victory over terrorism was close thanks to the sacrifices of the Syrian Armed Forces.

Commemorating the national Army Day, the Syrian president praises the sacrifices of armed forces on the battlefield against terrorists.
In recent weeks, the Syrian army has been trying to wrest control over the southern provinces of Dara’a and Quneitra, which border the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.
Takfiri militants have been handing over their heavy weapons to Syrian government forces and leaving the region in negotiated surrender deals.
The full liberation of both Dara’a and Quneitra by Syrian government forces would cut the much-reported collaboration between Israel and anti-Damascus militants operating in the two regions.

President Bashar al-Assad has hailed the achievements of Syrian Armed Forces on the battlefield against foreign-backed militant groups, saying final victory over terrorism is close thanks to their sacrifices.

He made the remarks in a speech published by the Jaish al-Sha’ab (People's Army) magazine on Wednesday in commemoration of the 73rd anniversary of the founding of the national Syrian military.

Assad congratulated Syrian soldiers for “moving from one achievement to another and from one victory to another in the face of the systematic terrorism and its regional and international backers.”

The army, he said, has managed to foil the “Zionist-American” plot against Syria by liberating most of the country from the grip of terrorists, and thus should be regarded as an example of nationalism and sacrifice.

“Our heroic armed forces, you have proven to the whole world over the past seven years that you are an integrated example to follow in nationalism and sacrifice and that you are the fortresses in the face of terrorism,” Assad said.

The Syrian army’s sacrifices led to the restoration of security and stability to most areas and undermined the Zionist-American plot against the country’s sovereignty, he pointed out.

The Syrian president further noted that locals are now returning to the liberated areas, vowing that “victory will be achieved soon.”

“They (the terrorists) were ultimately forced to leave -- humiliated, rolled back, their tails between their legs -- after you gave them a taste of bitter defeat,” he added.

Recently, President Assad told Russian media that Damascus' next priority would be retaking the northwestern Idlib Province, which is mostly held by terrorists.

“Now Idlib is our goal, but not just Idlib,” he said. “There are of course territories in the eastern part of Syria that are controlled by various groups... So we will be moving into all these regions.”

Over 150 Daesh Takfiri terrorists have surrendered to Afghan security forces in the northern province of Jawzjan after they were defeated by Taliban.

Local Afghan officials said 152 terrorists from the Daesh strongholds of Darzab and Qush Tepa surrendered in the early hours of Wednesday.

"Their fighters have surrendered in the past, but this time it is more important because the Daesh leader and deputy surrendered with more than 150 fighters all at once," said Mohammad Hanif Rezaee, an army spokesman. "With this the Daesh chapter is going to be closed in the north."

General Faqir Mohammad Jawzjani, the provincial police chief, said Habib-ul Rahman, a senior Daesh leader, was among those who surrendered.

The Taliban militant group took credit for the surrender announced by Afghan officials, saying it had "cleared" the north of Daesh terrorists.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said more than 150 Daesh terrorists had been killed and more than 130 captured by Taliban with the rest surrendering to government forces rather than Taliban. "The evil phenomenon of Daesh has completely been eliminated and people have been freed from its tortures in Jawzjan province of Afghanistan."

Taliban launched an offensive several weeks ago in Jawzjan against Daesh.

Iran, China and Russia have warned about the growing presence of the Takfiri terrorists in Afghanistan.

In a separate development, the UN mission to Afghanistan said an employee of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) was among the people who were killed in a coordinated attack on a refugee and repatriation center in the eastern city of Jalalabad on Tuesday.

The UN said in a statement that the employee who died was a 22-year-old woman whose husband had died in a bombing in Kabul three years earlier. It said she leaves behind a six-year-old daughter who is “now an orphan.”

No one immediately claimed responsibility for Tuesday’s attack.

Since late last year, Daesh, which has already lost all its urban strongholds in Syria and Iraq, has taken advantage of the chaos in Afghanistan and established a foothold in the Asian country’s eastern and northern regions, launching brutal attacks against civilians and security forces alike.

According to Afghan intelligence documents, Daesh is present in nine provinces, from Nangarhar and Kunar in the east to Jawzjan, Faryab, and Badakhshan in the north, and Ghor in the central west.

Terrorists ‘plotted attack’ on Barcelona’s Camp Nou stadium

The terrorists who carried out attacks in Barcelona and the nearby area in August of last year also plotted an assault on the city’s famous Camp Nou football stadium, according to reports in local media.

Sixteen people died in two attacks in August 2017, the first of which involved a van driver targeting pedestrians on Barcelona’s iconic Las Ramblas street. A further person was later stabbed to death in the coastal town of Cambrils, 75 miles (120km) to the south.

A 12-man jihadist cell was believed to have carried out the attacks, with eight members being killed by police and four others arrested.

There were reports at the time that the group had planned a much larger attack, possibly including Barcelona’s famous Sagrada Familia cathedral.

But according to local newspaper El Periodico, the group had also intended to attack the Camp Nou stadium for the Barcelona versus Real Betis match on August 20 – three days after the initial assault.

Detectives investigating the case reportedly found internet searches and images of the stadium on the phone of Mohammed Hichamy, a member of the terrorist cell.

"It is very possible that they wanted to attempt the same as the attackers in Paris that attacked the Saint Denis stadium in the middle of the match of the French national team," El Periodico quotes a source close to the investigation as saying.

The terrorist incidents in Paris in 2015 saw a suicide bomber attack the national stadium as France played Germany in a football friendly. The bomber killed himself and a passerby outside the venue, before terrorists went on a killing spree in other locations across the city.

It is unclear what the assault on the Camp Nou would have involved, although El Periodico reports that members of the cell had visited the club shop in the days prior to the August 17 attack, possibly buying merchandise to disguise themselves as fans.

Barcelona’s game against Real Betis went ahead as planned on August 20, although there was a heightened security presence.

Players and fans paid tribute to the victims of the attacks before and during the game, which was attended by around 56,000 supporters.
