US Prepared to Attack Iran, With Saudi Forces Doing the Bulk of Fighting

July 29, 2018 at 9:09 pm

(ANTIWAR.COM) — Is the United States preparing to attack Iran? On Friday, Defense Secretary James Mattis dismissed this idea as “fiction,” back when the sources were in the Australian military. Yet other US officials have since been quoted as saying the attack is still being considered.

The pretext for this war appears to be the ongoing Yemen War. Last week, Saudi state media claimed that Yemen’s Houthi rebels attacked and slightly damaged a Saudi oil tanker. The Saudis have previously alleged the Houthis are tied to Iran, and US media is treating this as some sort of transference, and reporting that Iran attacked the Saudi oil tanker, even though no one alleged that ever happened.

Since the US has spent years presenting oil security as a reason for war with Iran, they are considering using that excuse. Officials say that this would be mostly a Saudi-led attack, with Saudi Arabia and its allies doing the bulk of the fighting, and relying on the US for support.

Officials say this would require a “long-term military effort” against Iran. The US expectations that they might keep their involvement limited to a support role appears particularly unrealistic, given how much the same Saudi-led coalition has struggled to conquer Yemen.

The danger here is that both the US and what it envisions to be its proxy army are going to each go into a war with high expectations for one another, and each get into a much bigger war than they bargained for.

There are few specifics about what form this war would take, as US officials were insisting as recently as a few days ago that they are not interested in regime change in Iran. It is hard to imagine, however, that they could get the major Sunni Arab states to attack Shi’ite Iran with any hope of it being “limited.”

Israeli Forces Kill Five Gazans, Including 12-Year-Old

155 killed in protests since end of March

Since Friday, Israeli attacks along the Gaza border have killed at least five Palestinians and wounded scores of others. The slain included two teenagers, one a 12-year-old and the other a 17-year-old, who were shot at Friday’s protests near the border.

Gaza mourners at the funeral of a slain protester

Friday has been seeing protests weekly at the border for months, with Israeli forces having killed 155 protesters since the end of March, when the demonstrations began. The Israeli military claimed their troops came under attack this week before firing on the protesters, though they added there were no Israeli casualties.

In addition to the two teenagers, a 42-year-old protester was also killed Friday. On Sunday, Israel carried out an airstrike in northern Gaza, killing two more Palestinians. Israel claimed the two were terrorists who were trying to either launch a missile into Israel, or had planned to fly a flaming kite.

Violent Israeli crackdowns on Friday protests lead to heavily attended funerals and growing resentment. This in turn fuels Israeli military suspicion that the Gazans will attack them, which leads to more Israeli attacks on Gaza.

Anger grows particularly when the slain at the Friday protests include obvious civilians. The shooting of a 12-year-old boy in the head by an Israeli sniper was a particularly egregious case, with UN officials saying the killing was “shocking.” Israel said the 12-year-old refugee had been approaching the fence. Those protesters near the fence tend to be targeted with live rounds by Israeli snipers, even children.

As Israel kills Palestinians, the growing anger eventually fuels attacks into southern Israel. In recent months, this has tended to be flaming kites and balloons, which have set fires and done some minimal property damage. This fuels more Israeli attacks to “stop the kites.”

This cycle tends to continue until Egypt or some other nation is able to negotiate a ceasefire. In recent weeks, these ceasefires tend to only go so far as the following Friday, when Israeli snipers are again at the ready to shoot protesters and start the process all over again.

‘Resistance continues’: Palestinian teen Ahed Tamimi home after 8 months in Israeli jail (VIDEO)

Ahed Tamimi, the 17-year-old Palestinian who slapped an Israeli soldier in her home village, has been released from prison. The girl, praised by many as a symbol of the Palestinian resistance, has returned to the West Bank.

The Palestinian teenager and her mother left prison on Sunday after completing an eight-month sentence for slapping and kicking Israeli soldiers. Tamimi’s family arrived at a checkpoint in the West Bank, where they spoke briefly to reporters before heading to their home village of Nebi Saleh.

“From this martyr’s house, I say: Resistance is continuing until the occupation is removed,” she said as cited by Reuters. “All the female prisoners in jail are strong, and I thank everyone who stood by me while I was in prison.”

Speaking to the media later in the day, newly freed Tamimi reiterated her call for Palestinians to keep resisting and remain strong. She also spoke about the suffering of political prisoners in Israel, revealing the hardship she had suffered, including often being transported inside a military vehicle made entirely of iron on the inside. She also spoke about how difficult it was to prepare for exams while in jail.

Tamimi was arrested last December after a video of the incident with Israeli troops, filmed by her mother, went viral. She faced 12 charges, including assault and incitement. Since her arrest, a number of her family members have also been detained.

In April, the teenager’s lawyer Gaby Lasky filed a complaint over alleged “inappropriate conduct,” which amounted to sexual harassment during her detention. The claim came after a video of the Tamimi’s interrogation emerged online. The footage allegedly showed an Israeli central military intelligence officer commenting on the young girl’s appearance and attractiveness. The interrogator also threatened to arrest other members of her family if she did not cooperate, according to the lawyer.

On the eve on the Tamimis’ release, Israeli police arrested Italian graffiti artist Agostino Chirwin, who had depicted the teen in a mural on a West Bank separation wall in Bethlehem. Another Italian artist and a Palestinian, whose identities were not released, were reportedly also detained with Chirwin.

As driverless-car crashes mount, fear of riding in them rises, too

Americans have been shaken by crashes of driverless cars and their semiautonomous counterparts, two recent surveys show, and consumer groups are pushing back against what they say is a flawed effort in Congress to regulate the vehicles.

They have insisted that the Senate put regulatory teeth into a bill they think will be tacked onto a must-pass reauthorization bill to fund the Federal Aviation Administration. A coalition of consumer and safety groups stepped in this week to oppose the bill, suggesting it be sent back to committee to add stricter regulations for the emerging technology.

“We do believe the autonomous vehicle has tremendous potential, but if untested vehicles are let loose into the marketplace, you are going to potentially turn consumers off,” said Jack Gillis, executive director of the Consumer Federation of America, an association of nonprofit consumer organizations. “We are going to slowly turn consumers farther and farther away from the potential of good that the autonomous vehicle can do.”

Two public opinion surveys released this week underscored the growing trepidation over the advent of driverless cars. A Brookings Institution online survey found that 61 percent of Americans said they were not inclined to ride in self-driving cars. A poll done at the weekend by Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety found that 69 percent of those surveyed said they were concerned about sharing the road with autonomous cars.

In addition to the survey responses, concerns over driverless vehicles have echoed in other places: The infrastructure think tank HNTB found in a June poll that 70 percent of people expect autonomous vehicles to arrive within the next 15 years — but 59 percent said they would be no safer than cars with human drivers.

These findings come despite the often-cited figure that 94 percent of car crashes are caused by human error and the fact that most traffic fatalities in 2016 were caused by three factors that fully autonomous cars might eliminate: distracted driving, drunken driving and speeding.

Automakers and technology companies are painfully aware that a crash of a driverless car receives extraordinary media attention, even if the autonomous vehicle is not at fault. When a truck backed into a self-driving bus that was stuck in traffic in Las Vegas in November, a headline said, “Las Vegas’ self-driving bus crashes in first hour of service.”

Companies have been testing vehicles in a dozen states, and one of the industry pioneers — a Google spinoff called Waymo — last week said its test cars were averaging 25,000 miles a day on public roads and had surpassed 8 million total miles since 2009.

Joan Claybrook, who served as head of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) under President Jimmy Carter, said this week that overall, “the amount of testing is quite minuscule.”

A spokesman for the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation said it remains uncertain whether what is known as the AV START Act will be appended to the FAA reauthorization bill next week.

“Self-driving vehicles are already operating on our roads today — they’re not waiting to see whether or not Congress passes our bill to enhance safety,” said Frederick Hill, a spokesman for Chairman John Thune (R-S.D.).

Hill said the bipartisan bill was “a beginning and not the last word on statutory rules for self-driving vehicles.”

“These critics maneuvering for changes will still have future opportunities to offer their ideas affecting the regulation of self-driving vehicles,” Hill said.

The Commerce Committee approved the bill by a voice vote last year, but it has yet to receive a vote on the Senate floor. That led Thune to consider attaching it to the must-pass FAA reauthorization bill.

It has been held up by a number of Democrats — notable among them Sen. Dianne Feinstein (Calif.) — who want NHTSA to set stricter standards for the industry.

The automakers and tech companies developing driverless cars feared that premature regulatory requirements might inhibit their testing of the vehicles, but Congress felt a need to step in as more test cars populate highways.

The bipartisan bill — heavily amended by both parties — allows NHTSA to grant some manufacturers exemptions from federal safety standards. It also clarifies a fine point born from the fact that traditionally states have licensed drivers and vehicles, while the federal government has been responsible for automotive safety standards and recalls. In a world where there would be no “drivers” of what are called Level 3 to Level 5 vehicles (and where Waymo ultimately wants to dispense with steering wheels and pedals in its Level 5 cars), the bill says federal regulators would govern most aspects of driving.

A Waymo test vehicle with a human at the wheel crashed in Tempe, Ariz., in May when another motorist swerved into it. A second Waymo vehicle that was not in autonomous mode and had an operator controlling it was in a five-car crash in nearby Mesa last month. Police said the crash was caused when a drunk driver ran through a red light and plowed into the Waymo car and other vehicles.

When Tesla’s vehicles in driver-assist mode have crashed, the technology has been confused with fully autonomous cars, creating headlines such as “Tesla driver dies in first fatal autonomous car crash.”

Among the requirements the consumer advocacy groups want added to the bill and stipulated by federal regulations are full disclosure of crashes to NHTSA and the use of event-data recorders like those found in commercial aircraft. They also want requirements for testing of what each vehicle’s computer can “see,” a mandate that makers of fully autonomous cars could not remove steering wheels or brake pedals without federal approval, and permission for states to regulate driverless cars until federal laws are passed to preempt them.

In a conference call with reporters Monday, almost a dozen speakers from consumer and safety groups, universities and law enforcement voiced concerns about the AV START Act.

“Right now, the technology is in the testing phase, and there are far more concerns and questions than there are data-driving conclusions,” said J. Thomas Manger, the chief of police in Montgomery County, Md. “Instead of rushing this to a vote, let’s get if right the first time.”

Ken McLeod, policy director at the League of American Bicyclists, pointed to the death in March of Elaine Herzberg, 49, who was crossing a street in Tempe after dark when an Uber car being tested in autonomous mode with a driver at the wheel struck and killed her.

“Will an AV see me when I cross the road? Will an AV see me if I wear dark clothes?” McLeod asked.

Cathy Chase, president of Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety, said the bill needed “common-sense improvements.”

“The Senate must put the brakes on this bill,” Chase said. “There is no good reason for the Senate to move forward with this bill as currently written.”

Israel, US Rescue Terrorist Leaders, Intelligence Assets From Southwestern Syria Ahead Of Liberation

JULY 26, 2018

By Brandon Turbeville

As the Syrian government marches forward with the liberation of the southwestern front, the United States, Europe, Israel, and Jordan are coming to the humanitarian rescue. But they aren’t rescuing civilians from terrorists or even from being caught in the crossfire. Instead, these countries have identified a group of “exceptional refugees” whose lives matter much more than those of the civilians the West has wantonly slaughtered for the last seven years.

Although refusing to open its borders, Israel (apparently the only country in the world that is allowed to maintain borders) has allowed members of the al-Nusra Front propaganda wing known as the White Helmets to access Israeli territory on their way to resettlement in Britain, Canada, and Germany according to Jordanian officials. Jordan was also part of the Caravan of Evil.

Estimates initially put the number of White Helmets being evacuated at 800 but those numbers were soon reduced to 500.

In my article, “Exceptional Refugees – Israel Helps Evacuate White Helmets From Syria, Exports al-Qaeda To Europe,” I asked the question “Is the West really evacuating its own intelligence agents and intelligence assets?

I continued by writing:

Syrian MP and Director of the Chamber of Commerce certainly seems to believe so.

His tweet read “The EU intends to evacuate about 800 White Helmets terrorists and move them to Europe before they get caught by the Syrian army as many of them MI6 operatives as all evidence in E Aleppo proved.”

So does Ziad Fadel of Syrian Perspective whose information and sources have been consistently reliable throughout the seven years of this war.

Fadel writes,

The true reason, [for the evacuation] I am told by my sources, is that there were 2,200 special ops and intelligence officers who were trapped at the border with the White Helmets and who were under threat of being captured or killed by the Syrian Army.

. . . . . .

Instead, only 400 or less White Helmets were provided with seats on the Zionist helicopters. Another 600 and their families remain trapped at the border where they will either be killed by ISIS nearby or by our troops. The scene, I am told, was like the last day of the Vietnam evacuation in April of 1975 with people struggling to get on the helicopters.

Of the 2,200 foreign spies and the special ops rodents, 1100 were from Gulf States like Qatar, Dubai, Saudi Arabia and Abu Dhabi. They are now in Amman awaiting repatriation.

Indeed, even when one ignores the fact that the White Helmets were created by a French mercenary and funded by the US and UK, the group’s track record shows a level of anticipation and delivery of propaganda videos and recordings of “incidents” coinciding with the interests of Western governments that is so uncanny that one could scarcely believe that the group was working in any way in an independent fashion. No organization working to demonize the Syrian government and capitalize on political events on an independent basis would ever have such a string of luck and “coincidences” as the White Helmets have had without prior consultation and direct communication with intelligence agencies.

But a new article by Whitney Webb entitled, “Israel Evacuated Alleged Mossad-Linked Rebel Commanders During “Humanitarian” White Helmet Rescue,” has added more information corroborating my suspicions as well as Fadel’s sources.

Webb writes,

Over the weekend, and as MintPress predicted last Tuesday, the controversial Western government-funded “humanitarian” group, the Syrian Civil Defense — popularly known as the White Helmets — were evacuated from southern Syria as the Syrian government continues to gain ground in its offensive throughout the country’s southwest. However, sources from within the Syrian opposition have revealed that the White Helmets were not the only ones evacuated from Syrian territory, as four top “rebel” commanders were also among the evacuees, undermining the heavily promoted narrative that the evacuation was purely “humanitarian” in nature.

Indeed, it was reported by al-Masdar News that four “rebel” commanders were welcomed to Israel by the Israeli army ahead of the liberation of southern Syria by the Syrian government.

Al-Masdar News reports,

Israeli Army has welcomed four top commanders of the Syrian rebel force in Quneitra province as the Syrian Army is increasingly gaining ground in southwest Syria.

The commanders are: Moaz Nassar and Abu Rateb of Fursan al-Golan Brigade, Ahmad al-Nahs of Saif al-Sham Brigade, and Alaa al-Halaki of Jaish Ababeel.

Those have fled Syrian territories with their families and were secured by Israeli military once they get to the border line.

Opposition sources revealed that the aforementioned commanders have been recruited by the Israeli intelligence to rebel against the Syrian President Bashar Assad, and remained in touch with Israeli officers ever since.

The al-Masdar article (linked above) also contains photographs of three of the four commanders.

That Israel has already provided these rebel groups with assistance is not conjecture. In a report by Bethan McKernan for the Independent entitled “Israel ‘giving secret aid to Syrian Rebels’ report says,” published on June 19, 2017 and citing another report by The Wall Street Journal (“Israel Gives Secret Aid to Syrian Rebels” by Rory Jones June 18, 2017), McKernan states,

The Israeli authorities have provided significant amounts of cash, food, fuel and medical supplies to Sunni rebels fighting against Bashar al-Assad’s government, the Wall Street Journalreported on Monday, citing “half a dozen rebels and three people familiar with Israel’s thinking.”

Is is well known that Israel has provided medical help for Syrian civilians and fighters inside its own borders in the past.

. . . .

The supposed support for Sunni rebels is thought to have begun as early as 2013 under former Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon, with the goal of creating a ‘buffer zone’ free of radical militants such as Isis and Iranian-allied forces along Israel’s border.

A special Israeli army unit was created to oversee the costly aid operation, the WSJ reported, which gives Fursan al-Joulan – Knights of the Golan – an estimated $5,000 (£3,900) a month. The group of around 400 fighters receives no direct support from Western rebel backers, and is not affiliated with the Free Syrian Army, the official rebel umbrella organisation.

Israel may be funding up to four other rebel groups which have Western backing. The groups use the cash to pay fighters and buy ammunition.

The alliance reportedly began after wounded Fursan al-Joulan fighters made their way to the border and begged Israeli soldiers for medical assistance. “Israel stood by our side in a heroic way,” the group’s spokesperson, Moatasem al-Golani, told the Journal. “We wouldn’t have survived without Israel’s assistance.”

“Given that Israel had spent over $60,000 a year supporting the group financially, it would make sense for Tel Aviv not only to develop and maintain ties with their commanders, but to rescue those commanders as the Syrian government continues its advance,” writes Whitney Webb of Mint Press News. “Otherwise, the capture of the commanders by Syrian forces could reveal further proof of the web of connections between their group (and other related groups) and the Israeli government, as well as other foreign governments, including the United States.”

But Israel is not the only country that has been openly supporting Fursan al-Golan and Alwiyat Saif al-Sham. The United States has been doing so since 2013 when both groups were trained and equipped by the CIA, with Alwiyat Saif al-Sham obtaining TOW missiles from the US in the process. Both groups were “vetted” by the CIA but Alwiyat Saif al-Sham publicly joined with Jaish al-Haramon coalition, a group based in southern Syria and led by al-Nusra Front. See Jeremy Bender’s Business Insider article from October 20, 2015 entitled “There are a lot of CIA-vetted Syrian rebel groups taking it to Assad.

Webb writes,

The assertion made by Al Masdar that the rescued rebel commanders had connections to Mossad is also in keeping with precedent, as the intelligence agency has long helped bolster terror groups throughout the region. For instance, Mossad has supported the terror group Jundallah, active in Iran and Pakistan, and the Iranian terror group Mujahedeen Khalq (MEK). And, as MintPress has previously reported, even some commanders of ISIS (Daesh) were later revealed to actually be Mossad agents following their capture.

Assertions of an Israeli evacuation of rebel commanders, if confirmed, would prove Israel’s “humanitarian” rescue of White Helmets members and their families was aimed at protecting assets of Israeli and Western intelligence that had helped to prolong Syria’s now seven-year-long civil war.
