Earthquake SERIES strikes Ring of Fire with California hit multiple times

CALIFORNIA has been rocked by a series of earthquakes amid fears that a major tremor could be on its way.

Researchers from earthquaketrack.com reported nine incidents over the last 24 hours with the most powerful being a 2.4 magnitude tremor near Mentone, CA.

The number of tremors in close proximity triggered fears the so-called Big One could be coming.

New data has revealed the fault line running through Los Angeles’ exclusive shopping district of Beverly Hills is at risk if the Big One hits.

A new map of the region using the latest data from the US Geological Survey shows Beverly Hills – which is situated on the Ring Fire – is at greater risk from earthquakes than previously thought.

The Santa Monica fault zone cuts through the so-called Golden Triangle, running between Santa Monica and Wilshire boulevards.

The most recent deadly earthquake to rock Beverly Hills occurred just over 24 years ago in January 1994, at a magnitude of 6.7, and scientists believe California’s Big One is at least 10 years overdue.

The quake killed 57 people and injured more than 8,700 others with an estimated property damage of up to $50billion (around £35billion) at the time, which would equate to about £65billion today.

Robert Graves, a research geophysicist at the US Geological Survey, said: "The San Andreas fault in southern California last had a major quake in 1857 (magnitude 7.9).

"Studies that have dated previous major offsets along the fault trace show that there have been about 10 major quakes over the past 1,000-2,000 years… the average time between these quakes is about 100-150 years.”

The San Andreas fault runs near the Santa Monica fault zone. While San Andreas runs northeast of Los Angeles Santa Monica fault zone is roughly perpendicular, running east to west through Los Angeles.

The latest map shows the fault line ending underneath Beverly Hills, however, geologists believe it could go as far as Hollywood.

Tim Dawson, a senior engineering geologist with the California Geological Survey, said: “It’s possible it connects up with the Hollywood fault, and that’s what we’d really like to answer.”

After fourth Austin explosion, police warn of sophisticated ‘serial bomber’

While authorities scrambled for clues, another package exploded at a Texas FedEx facility on March 20.

AUSTIN — Anxious Texans huddled inside their homes Monday as investigators scrambled for clues at the scene of another mysterious explosion here, the fourth in a string of attacks this month that authorities say are the work of a sophisticated “serial bomber” who has been terrorizing this city with increasingly complex devices.

The latest blast, which injured two men walking through a residential area Sunday night, marked an escalation in both the tactics and skills displayed by the bomber or bombers, police said. While the three previous devices were hidden in packages delivered to homes in residential neighborhoods, the fourth device — anchored to a for-sale sign — was left on the side of the road and was rigged with a tripwire, showing “a higher level of sophistication, a higher level of skill,” said Brian Manley, the interim Austin police chief.

“What we have seen now is a significant change from what appeared to be three very-targeted attacks to what was, last night, an attack that would have hit a random victim that happened to walk by,” Manley said at a news briefing Monday. “So we’ve definitely seen a change in the method.”

Manley said the fourth device had “similarities” to the three bombs that detonated in the Texas capital in the past three weeks, killing two people and injuring two others, one seriously. The explosion Sunday night plunged the city further into a frightening uncertainty that has leftresidents on edge. Authorities have seemed vexed, completely at a loss to explain who could be setting off the devices — or why — and asking the unknown attacker to communicate with them. They also have offered rewards of up to $115,000 for information in the case.

The first three explosives all hit eastern Austin, affecting areas where black and Hispanic residents live, prompting some to question whether the initial blast on March 2 would have prompted more urgency had it gone off in a more affluent, predominantly white neighborhood — like where the attack Sunday night happened, injuring two white men.

“This is a public threat,” Nelson Linder, president of NAACP’s Austin chapter, said Monday. “Now that the geography has changed, it’s going to widen people’s perspectives. Nobody can take this lightly; we’re all vulnerable.”

Linder added: “Like they tell us in the military, when you walk, look down at where you’re walking.”

Yellowstone volcano eruption: Steamboat geyser starts to BLOW underneath supervolcano

YELLOWSTONE could be erupting from underground after experts recorded signs of activity from a powerful geyser in the national park which is home to a terrifying super volcano.

Experts at Yellowstone National Park claim to have seen the Steamboat Geyser erupt on Thursday night.

The park service made the announcement about the world’s tallest active geyser on Friday, as geologists compared the accounts to thermal sensors in the area.

It was determined that it “could be a series of minor eruptions”.

The geyser can shoot water more than 300 feet during significant eruptions.

A New Zealand geyser has sent water higher still, albeit not for more than 100 years.

The activity will have sent fears among volcano watchers who worry for the supervolcano, located about 15 miles south of the geyser, is due to erupt.

Yellowstone National Park has more than 10,000 thermal features, sitting atop the world’s largest volcano.

It can send 2,000 times more matter into the sky than the Mount St Helens eruption.

Steamboat Geyser erupted again on Thursday night

A series of earthquakes have been rumbling underground over the past few months, with as many as 200 recorded in a matter of days.

The volcano is “under strain” according to some experts.

But researchers said steamboat eruptions had little connection to a volcano like Yellowstone.

Jacob Lowenstern, former scientist in charge of the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory, told the Casper Star and Tribune: “Their plumbing systems are in the upper few hundred feet of the Earth.

“As you get hotter and hotter and deeper and deeper, the permeability and ability of water to move around shuts off. There’s not a whole lot of connectivity of the reservoirs once you get deep.

And Meteorologist Tom Skilling told WGN news: “Minor earthquakes occur in the Yellowstone area 50 or more times per week, but a major eruption is not expected in the foreseeable future.”

Steamboat Geyser is in the Norris Geyser Basin, which is closed to vehicle access at the moment for spring plowing.

Later in the spring, the road will be open to bicycles.

Yellowstone eruption: The Steamboat geyser is about to blow

Another geyser, Old Faithful, erupts at fairly predictable intervals - but geologists believe that Steamboat Geyser is almost impossible to anticipate.

Between 2005 and mid-2013, the geyser did not erupt once.

Steamboat Geyser then erupted on July 31 2013 and again on Sept 3 2014 according to a report published by the United States Geological Survey.

In the past, gaps as short as four days and as long as 50 years have been recorded between Steamboat Geyser’s eruptions.

The last Yellowstone volcanic eruption was 700,000 years ago and experts say it should blow every one million years or so.

Earlier this year seismologists from UNAVCO, a nonprofit university-governed consortium, revealed the volcano was “under strain”.

Using Global Positioning System, borehole tiltmeters, and borehole strainmeters to measure minute changes in deformation at Yellowstone, David Mencin and Glen Mattioli said “the strain signal is larger than would be expected if the crust under Yellowstone were completely solid”.

Geyser erupts under road sending water and debris into the sky on San Diego interstate

geyser san diego
A towering geyser sent water and debris into the sky near Torrey Pines Tuesday, prompting traffic issues near busy construction.

The geyser erupted around 11 a.m. on Genesee Avenue just west of Interstate 5. All lanes of traffic on Genesee Ave. were shut down in both directions.

Public Utilities Department crews were able to shut off the water at about 12 p.m.

A city official told 10News a contractor hit a 6-inch blowoff value connected to a 30-inch water main. Crews have shut down the water main and neighbors may experience low water pressure until repairs are complete.

The incident occurred by nearby construction for a trolley line, prompting headaches for commuters in the area.

Comment: This is one of many strange events occurring nearby road works:
