Can You Feel It? America Thrust into Spiritual Darkness

JASON AND DAVID BENHAM

(xantype/Public Domain)

What happened in Charlottesville last week was disgusting. Our hearts grieved as we watched folks marching in our streets who actually believe their race is better than others'. No one should have anything to do with that filth from Satan's floor.

As Christians, our faith stands adamantly opposed to this, pointing to the incredible unity Christ brings: "Then I looked. And there was a great multitude which no one could count, from all nations and tribes and peoples and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, with palm branches in their hands" (Rev. 7:9).

So this rally that took place ran against every grain of our being.

And since then, all the lawless insanity that has followed—including the media's huge power grab to lump men and women of faith in with these supremacist nut jobs—is grieving, too.

Hearing antifa (the hard left fringe group fomenting much of the violence) call for an escalation in tactics to stop Republicans or right-wingers from assembling or voicing their opinions is crazy. Antifa activists even labeled right-leaning speech violence, and now say they have a right to use self-defense or physical violence in return.

This is absolutely absurd.

Even more absurd is their protest in Boston, where they gathered to "stand against Nazis" by throwing bottles of urine at police and burning the flag that defeated Nazism!

And we can't forget Missouri Sen. Maria Chappell-Nadal's public call for the assassination of our president.

Are you kidding?

The bottom line is, it doesn't matter if it's the "alt-right" (white supremacists) or hard left (Antifa), any American with a soul abhors these groups. But what these groups—and the ongoing conflict we're watching daily now—reveal to us is that we as a nation have entered a period of spiritual darkness, a darkness that can be felt.

So we believe this total solar eclipse means much more than a once-in-a-lifetime event we get to watch with our kids. We see it as a physical manifestation of a much deeper spiritual truth—that our nation has abandoned the light of the world, and darkness has come upon us.

But there's hope. There always is as long as Jesus is on the throne.

It's up to us, as a nation, though, to listen to Him. We must "repent and be converts, that [our] sins may be wiped away, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord" (Acts 3:19).

We can't continue to reject Him and revile His ways anymore. We have to quit pretending He doesn't exist—even though we say we're "One nation under God" and our currency proclaims, "In God we trust."

These proclamations simply aren't true anymore.

The consequence of this rejection is darkness, as Isaiah 5 reveals: "In that day they shall roar against them like the roaring of the sea. And if one looks to the land--only darkness and sorrow, and the light is darkened by the clouds" (Isa. 5:30b).

Recently, the light from the sun grew dark in the middle of the day. But just as sure as it regained its light minutes later we can rest assured that if we turn back to God He will usher in a time of spiritual refreshing that we so desperately need as a nation.

Here's a short video we did to bring a bit more clarity to everything going on today.

University of Texas removes Confederate statues under cover of darkness

The bronze likenesses of Confederate Gens. Robert E. Lee and Albert Sidney Johnston and Confederate Postmaster John H. Reagan will be relocated to the university’s Briscoe Center for American History, Fenves said. The statue of James Stephen Hogg, the first native-born governor of Texas and the son of a Confederate general, will be considered for re-installation at another campus site, he said.

The removal of the statues under cover of darkness comes in the wake of protests a week earlier by white nationalists and neo-Nazis in Charlottesville, Va., that turned violent, with one counterprotester killed and numerous others injured when a man with far-right leanings allegedly drove his car into a crowd.

“The horrific displays of hatred at the University of Virginia and in Charlottesville shocked and saddened the nation,” Fenves said in a message to the university community. “These events make it clear, now more than ever, that Confederate monuments have become symbols of modern white supremacy and neo-Nazism.”

UT spokesman Gary Susswein said the removal work was being done after dark and without advance warning for public safety reasons. The work was expected to begin late Sunday and take several hours. In Baltimore, where four Confederacy-related monuments were hauled away on trucks under cover of darkness late Tuesday night and early Wednesday, Mayor Catherine Pugh had said she was concerned about possible violence.

Palestinians have spent decades battling Israel. Now they’re battling each other.

A Palestinian civil war is making independence seem further away than ever before.

Typhoon Hato hits Hong Kong and southern China

Typhoon Hato, a maximum category 10 storm, slammed into Hong Kong on Wednesday lashing the Asian financial hub with wind and rain that uprooted trees and forced most businesses to close, while in some places big waves flooded seaside streets.

There were reports of 34 people injured in Hong Kong while in the city of Macau, across the Pearl River estuary, three people were killed, authorities there said.

In Hong Kong, more than 450 flights were cancelled, financial markets suspended and schools closed as Hato bore down, the first category 10 storm to hit the city since 2012.

The storm also made landfall in China’s Guangdong province, in Zhuhai city adjacent to Macau, Chinese state news agency Xinhua reported.

Numerous flights and trains were cancelled in Guangdong province, with Shenzhen’s International Airport particularly badly hit.

Thousands of residents along the Chinese coast were evacuated and fishing vessels were called back to port.

Maximum winds near Hato’s center were recorded at a destructive 155 kph (95 mph) as it continued to move west across Guangdong in the general direction of Hainan island.

American boy warns Trump in ISIS video: Fight will 'end in your lands’

The Islamic State in Iraq and Syria released a new video on Wednesday featuring a 10-year-old American boy warning President Trump that the fighting will “end in your lands.”

"My message to Trump, the puppet of the Jews: Allah has promised us victory and promised you defeat,” the boy, named Yousef, says in the video, obtained by MEMRI. “This battle is not going to end in Raqqa or Mosul. It's going to end in your lands. By the will of Allah, we will have victory, so get ready, for the fighting has just begun."

Yousef speaks English in the video with an American accent. He says he traveled to Raqqa, Syria, two years ago with his mother and that his father is an American soldier who fought in Iraq. The identity of his parents is not revealed in the video.

“This city has scared the whole world because the Muslims who live in it have learned the meaning of jihad and have established the rule of Allah,” Yousef says, describing Raqqa, which has served as a stronghold for ISIS since 2014.

“Because of this, all the nations in the world who are led by America have gathered to scare us away from what we have established.”

The video’s release comes as the Syrian Democratic Forces, backed by a United States-led international coalition, are pressing ahead with an attack on Raqqa to wrest the city from ISIS control.

ISIS has previously featured American hostages like James Foley and Steven Sotloff in propaganda videos of their beheadings.

In the video released Wednesday, Yousef mentions his best friend, who he says is from Sinjar, Iraq. ISIS seized the town and surrounding area in 2014, killing thousands of the Yazidi ethnic group, which ultimately caused the United States to begin conducting airstrikes on ISIS in Iraq.

The end of the video shows Yousef receiving weapons training from an unidentified individual.

“Do you think that we’re going to leave? Do you think that we’ll be finished?” Yousef says, this time in Arabic. “Never! We will remain until the Day of Judgment, with Allah’s permission.”
