69 Percent Of Americans Do Not Have An Adequate Emergency Fund

Do you have an emergency fund? If you even have one penny in emergency savings, you are already ahead of about one-fourth of the country. I write about this stuff all the time, but it always astounds me how many Americans are literally living on the edge financially. Back in 2008 when the economy tanked and millions of people lost their jobs, large numbers of Americans suddenly couldn’t pay their bills because they were living paycheck to paycheck. Now the stage is set for it to happen again. Another major recession is going to happen at some point, and when it does millions of people are going to get blindsided by it.

Despite all of our emphasis on education, we never seem to teach our young people how to handle money. But this is one of the most basic skills that everyone needs. Personally, I went through high school, college and law school without ever being taught about the dangers of going into debt or the importance of saving money.

If you are ever going to build any wealth, you have got to spend less than you earn. That is just basic common sense. Unfortunately, nearly one out of every four Americans does not have even a single penny in emergency savings…

Bankrate’s newly released June Financial Security Index survey indicates that 24 percent of Americans have not saved any money at all for their emergency funds.

This is despite experts recommending that people strive for a savings cushion equivalent to the amount needed to cover three to six months’ worth of expenses.

For years, I have been telling my readers that at a minimum they need to have an emergency fund that can cover at least six months of expenses. It is great to have more than that, but everyone should strive to have at least a six month cushion.

Unfortunately, that same Bankrate survey found that only 31 percent of Americansactually have such a cushion

The June survey also found that 31 percent of Americans have what Bankrate considers an ‘adequate’ savings cushion — six or more months’ worth of money to pay expenses — which means that nearly two-thirds of the country isn’t saving enough money.

That means that a whopping 69 percent of all Americans do not have an adequate emergency fund.

So what is going to happen if another great crisis arrives and millions of people suddenly lose their jobs?

Just like last time, mortgage defaults will start soaring and countless numbers of families will lose their homes.

If you do not have anything to fall back on, you can lose your spot in the middle class really fast. And in the case of a truly catastrophic national crisis, trying to operate without any money at all is going to be exceedingly challenging.

Just recently, the Federal Reserve conducted a survey that discovered that 44 percent of all Americans do not even have enough money “to cover an unexpected $400 expense”.

That is almost half the country.

And a different survey by CareerBuilder found that 75 percent of all Americans have lived paycheck to paycheck “at least some of the time”.

Unfortunately, in a desperate attempt to make ends meet many of us continue to pile up more and more debt. According to Moneyish, Americans have now accumulated more than a trillion dollars of credit card debt, more than a trillion dollars of student loan debt, and more than a trillion dollars of auto loan debt.

We’ve racked up $1 trillion in credit card debt — and that’s just a fraction of what we owe. That’s according to data released this year from the Federal Reserve, which found that U.S. consumers owe $1.0004 trillion on their cards, up 6.2% from a year ago; this is the highest amount owed since January 2009. What’s more, this isn’t the only consumer debt to top $1 trillion. We now also owe more than $1 trillion for our cars, and for our student loans, the data showed.

Overall, U.S. consumers are now more than 12 trillion dollars in debt.

We often criticize the federal government for being nearly 20 trillion dollars in debt. And that criticism is definitely valid. What we are doing to future generations of Americans is beyond criminal.

But are we not doing something similar to ourselves?

When you divide the total amount of consumer debt by the size of the U.S. population, it breaks down to roughly $40,000 for every man, woman and child in our country.

When someone lends you money, you have to pay back more than you originally borrow. And in the case of high interest debt, you can end up paying back several times what you originally borrowed.

If you carry a balance from month to month on a high interest credit card, it is absolutely crippling you financially. But many Americans don’t understand this. Instead, they just keep sending off the “minimum payment” every month because that is the easiest thing to do.

If you ever want to achieve financial freedom, you have got to get rid of your toxic debts. There are some forms of low interest debt, such as mortgage debt, that are not going to financially cripple you. But anything with a high rate of interest you will want to pay off as soon as possible.

And everyone needs a financial cushion. Unless you can guarantee that your life is always going to go super smoothly and you are never going to have any problems, you need an emergency fund to fall back on.

Yes, you may need to make some sacrifices in order to make that happen. Nobody ever said that it would be easy. But just about everyone has somewhere that a little “belt tightening” can be done, and in the long-term it will be worth it.

When you don’t have to constantly worry about how you are going to pay the bills next month, it will help you sleep a lot easier at night. Many of us have put a lot of unnecessary stress on ourselves by spending money that we didn’t have for things that we really didn’t need.

And now is the time to get your financial house in order, because it appears that another major economic downturn is not too far away.

Russian Su-27 warns off NATO F-16 trying to approach defense minister’s plane over Baltic (VIDEO)

Edited time: 21 Jun, 2017 21:49

Exclusive Zvezda TV channel footage

A NATO F-16 fighter jet has tried to approach the Russian defense minister’s plane above the neutral waters of the Baltic Sea. The plane was warded off by a Russian Su-27 escorting the minister’s aircraft.

Russian plane was en route to the city of Kaliningrad, a western Russian exclave between Poland and Lithuania on the Baltic Sea, where Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu is scheduled to discuss security issues with defense officials on Wednesday.

The incident was first reported by journalists of Russian state news agencies on board Shoigu’s plane.

While one NATO aircraft tried to approach the Russian airplane, a Russian Su-27 fighter jet got in its way and tilted its wings, apparently showing its arms. The F-16 then flew away.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that he has no information about the incident.

“It’s probably better to ask the Defense Ministry,” Peskov said in answer to journalists’ questions.

NATO confirmed that three Russian aircraft were tracked over the Baltic Sea, claiming they were unaware that the Russian Defense Minister was onboard one of the planes.

"As the aircraft did not identify themselves or respond to air traffic control, NATO fighter jets scrambled to identify them, according to standard procedures NATO has no information as to who was on board," a representative of the alliance told reporters

"We assess the Russian pilots’ behavior as safe and professional," the statement added, as quoted by Sputnik.

On Shoigu’s way back from Kaliningrad, his escort was bolstered by several Su-34 jets, according to reporters. A number of NATO planes followed the Russian Defense Minister’s plane at a distance without making attempts to get any closer.

On Monday a US RC-135 spy plane flying toward the Russian border made a “provocative turn” toward a Baltic Fleet Su-27, which had been scrambled for an interception mission.

The encounters of Russian and US warplanes over the Baltic Sea waters have apparently become more frequent lately. A Russian fighter jet intercepted a small group of US warplanes, including Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker military refueling aircraft, two B-1 bombers and one B-52, during the BALTOPS (Baltic Operations) annual training exercise on June 10.

Earlier in June, the Russian military intercepted another B-52 bomber in the same area, and escorted by an Su-27 fighter away from Russian territory.

More than 460 earthquakes recorded so far in Yellowstone Park swarm and nobody knows when it is going to stop

The earthquake swarm affecting the western edge of Yellowstone National Park has included more than 460 quakes so far.

The University of Utah, whose seismography stations monitor the park’s quake activity, said Monday night that 464 quakes have been recorded since June 12, including a magnitude 4.4 earthquake near West Yellowstone on June 15, which was the largest of the swarm to date.

The swarm has consisted of five quakes in the magnitude 3 range, 57 quakes in the magnitude 2 range, 238 in the magnitude 1 range, 157 in the magnitude zero range and six weaker quakes. The quakes have ranged in depth from zero to 9 miles, relative to sea level.

In total, 115 people reported to the U.S. Geological Survey that they felt the June 15 earthquake near West Yellowstone.

In its report, the University of Utah noted that earthquake swarms are common in Yellowstone and make up about half the total seismic activity of the region.

According to the National Park Service, the largest swarm happened in 1985, when more than 3,000 quakes were recorded in a three-month period in the northwestern portion of the park.

The park is one of the most seismically active areas in the U.S., experiencing 1,000 to 3,000 earthquakes a year. The quake activity is caused by the large number of faults in the park associated with the volcano that underlies Yellowstone.

To summarize, if we take the lower end number, it’s about 1/2 of the yearly seismicity in one week. And if we take the high-end member than it is about 1/5 of the yearly seismicity in one week. via Bozemandailychronicle

Impressive earthquake warm at Yellowstone in June 2017! Even if the supervolcano isn’t awakening, get prepared for the future big blow-off event…

New Chemical Attack In Syria Crosses “Red Line”
JUNE 21, 2017

By Brandon Turbeville

Throughout 2017, the United States has continued its race to become the most hypocritical nation on the face of the earth by continuing not only to violate basic principles of respect for human life and international law but also its own “red lines.” Despite Obama’s grandstanding over “red lines” and chemical weapons and Trump’s bloviating and subsequent war crimes surrounding “chemical weapons” and “beautiful babies,” the United States has committed what amounts to its own chemical attack on the Syrian and Iraqi people.

Although not specifically considered a “chemical weapon” in the traditional sense, white phosphorous is, in effect, a chemical agent. It is used largely for its smoke screening purposes but there is also a psychological element since contact with white phosphorous results in excruciatingly painful deep first, second, and third degree burns.

The use of white phosphorous over heavily populated civilian areas is prohibited under international law. In fact, white phosphorous is only allowed if the agent is being used for the purposes of masking or camouflage. If being used as a weapon, it is banned as a chemical weapon under the Chemical Weapons Convention. International law, however, has never gotten in the way of America’s goals and, for that reason, the U.S. has used the chemical repeatedly in both Iraq and Syria for some time.

But while little evidence has been produced demonstrating any harm to civilians from use of the chemical by the U.S., it is important to point out that the city of Mosul, Iraq is indeed a densely populated area and also one in which the U.S. has used white phosphorous. Indeed, Western media reports have also stated that Raqqa, despite being controlled by ISIS, is heavily populated with civilians who were not allowed to leave by Western-backed terrorists.

For the record, a New Zealand coalition general has finally admitted to the use of the chemical munitions in Iraq and Syria, marking the first time the potential war crime has been openly acknowledged.

As Meeran Karim of Slate reported,

A New Zealand army general on Wednesday confirmed that coalition forces fighting ISIS have used the controversial chemical white phosphorus in the Iraqi city of Mosul. The revelation comes after the Human Rights Watch issued a news release this week criticizing the U.S.-led coalition for deploying the incendiary in populated areas of Syria and Iraq.*

“White phosphorus fragments can exacerbate wounds even after treatment and can enter the bloodstream and cause multiple organ failure. Already dressed wounds can reignite when dressings are removed and they are re-exposed to oxygen,” the release states.

HRW’s arms director Steve Goose said Wednesday, “Horrific civilian harm from previous use of white phosphorus has generated public outrage and this latest use of white phosphorus underscores the urgent need for states to strengthen international law relating to incendiary weapons.” In spite of these allegations, HRW was not able to independently verify that the use of the incendiary chemical has resulted in any civilian casualties on the ground in Syria or Iraq.

The chemical is not banned under international law, and its permitted use in war is tied to conditions that limits its risks to harm civilians. It is worth noting that Mosul is a relatively densely populated area, making it an area where casualties from chemical burns could be catastrophic.

Shortly after HRW’s statements, New Zealand Brig. Gen. Hugh McAslan told NPR on Wednesday that the chemical was used to create a smokescreen that helped civilians safely evacuate volatile areas in Mosul earlier this year. This is the first time that any member of the coalition acknowledged the use of white phosphorus in Iraq or Syria. McAslan estimated that 28,000 civilians have managed to make the dangerous crossing out of Islamic State territory in the past few days alone.

Online videos surfaced on Thursday showing bursts of white phosphorous munitions at night over the Syrian city of Raqqa, where coalition forces are fighting ISIS militants. The source of the footage is a group called Raqqa Is Being Slaughtered Silently; the content of the footage has not yet been independently verified. Amnesty International says that while it is not able to vouch for the video’s credibility, the use of white phosphorous in Raqqa could potentially be a war crime.

What is surprising is not the fact that the U.S. would commit a war crime or even that it would admit to doing so but that the mainstream media would actually cover the crime, and the discredited Human Rights Watch organization that has supported terrorists and heavily promoted war for at least the last six years would dare criticize it.

Anne Barnard of the New York Times added,

It has not been determined whether the shells that appeared to contain white phosphorus landed in populated areas, but tens of thousands of civilians are believed to still be in Raqqa, even as many Islamic State leaders have fled south to Mayadeen in Deir al-Zour Province. Unicef, the United Nations Children’s Fund, warned that 40,000 children are believed to be trapped in the city.

Residents said that most of the Islamic State fighters left in Raqqa were local recruits, along with some foreign fighters, and that the most experienced commanders and fighters having decamped.

Funny enough, when the Syrian or Russian military bombs areas near Raqqa, the United States and its harpies in the NGO and media communities can’t shout loud enough that the target areas are heavily populated with civilians.

Regardless, it is clear to just about everyone that the United States has once again committed a crime against humanity by prosecuting its illegal war in Syria in support of terrorist forces in order to overthrow the Syrian government. In the process, it has actually managed to cross its own much-publicized “red line” in Syria.

U.S. total solar eclipse sparks spectator excitement

By Irene Klotz

By Irene Klotz

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (Reuters) - The first total solar eclipse across the continental United States in a century is expected to spark watching parties and traffic jams as it darkens skies from Oregon to South Carolina, authorities said on Wednesday.

During the Aug. 21 eclipse, the moon will pass between the sun and Earth, blocking the face of the sun and leaving only its outer atmosphere, or corona, visible in the sky.

It is the first coast-to-coast total eclipse since 1918.

Weather permitting, people can watch as the moon's 70-mile (113-km) wide shadow crosses through 14 states from 10:15 a.m. PDT (1715 GMT) around Lincoln Beach, Oregon, to 2:49 p.m. EDT (1849 GMT) in McClellanville, South Carolina.

With 200 million Americans within a day's drive of the path, national parks and highways officials are bracing for a travel surge.

“Be prepared," Martin Knopp of the Federal Highway Administration said at a news conference, cautioning drivers against simply showing up. "It’s not the time to pull over and be on the side of the road.”

Travel groups and many scientists will be heading to Oregon's northwest desert seeking favorable weather for viewing, according to the website eclipsophile.com.

Total solar eclipses occur somewhere on Earth every year or so, but most cast their shadow over oceans or remote land. The last total eclipse over part of the contiguous U.S. was in 1979.

All of North America will experience a partial eclipse, though the difference between a full and partial eclipse is "literally the difference between night and day," said astronomer Rick Fienberg of the American Astronomical Society.

He noted that even a 99 percent eclipse will not reveal the sun's corona. And during a total eclipse, the temperature drops and the horizon is ringed by the colors of sunset.

"The sky gets deep twilight blue and bright stars and planets come out," Fienberg said. "Animals and birds behave strangely, like it's the end of the day."

NASA said it plans to fly high-altitude research balloons and airplanes for solar physics and other experiments. Nearly a dozen U.S. science satellites will observe the sun and Earth.

The U.S. space agency will also broadcast the eclipse live from locations along the path.

Experts caution that the only safe time to look at the sun without special eclipse glasses is during totality when the surface of the sun is completely blocked by the moon.
