US Warplane Shoots Down Pro-Syrian Government Drone Firing on Coalition Forces

June 9, 2017 at 1:29 am

Rebels claim US strikes also “wiped out” an entire convoy of Shi’ite militia fighters.

(ANTIWAR.COM) — Tensions in the area around the US-backed rebel base at al-Tanf continues to grow today, with Pentagon officials reporting that a US warplane had shot down what they described as a “pro-regime drone,” that they accused of having attacked US coalition troops in the area.

No US or coalition troops were apparently hit in the shooting, and nothing was damaged, though US officials declined to identify the drone, or whose it actually was. Reports suggest it was a drone about the size of a US Predator drone. Hezbollah issued video that was believed to be from the drone.

The exact context of the incident is also not totally clear, as US-backed rebels suggested the US was in the process of attacking Shi’ite militias in the area at the time, and that they had “wiped out” an entire militia convoy that was heading to a base near Tanf.

This is raising questions as to whether the drone strike was an attempt to retaliate against the US attacks. Even if it wasn’t, both sides are attacking one another with alarming regularity in the area around Tanf, and raising concerns that the US and Syria are getting closer to being directly at war with one another.

BRIEFLY

Stuff that matters

ALOHA, PARIS

Hawaii now has a state law supporting the Paris Agreement’s climate goals.

Gov. David Ige signed the legislation Tuesday — less than a week after President Trump pulled out of the historic pact — committing to a reduction of greenhouse gases and creating a commission to tackle rising sea levels.

The island-chain state is acutely at risk from inundation due to changing climate. In April, water levels broke the 1905 record for highest tides, and experts say it will probably be broken again in 2017.

At least 12 other states have joined Hawaii in pushing back against Trump, creating the U.S. Climate Alliance. The group’s members are pledging to stay the course with regard to commitments to the Paris Agreement and the Clean Power Plan, despite the new administration’s abdication of both.

Since Trump ditched Paris last week, he’s received considerable backlashfrom local and global leaders alike, including the business community. Now that one state has written its climate commitments into law, the resistance is beginning to look a whole lot stiffer.

Explosion at US Embassy in Ukraine After Device Thrown Inside Compound in “Terrorist Act”

June 8, 2017 at 11:15 am

Authorities in Kiev said in a statement that the incident occurred at 12:05 a.m. local time, and occurred at the U.S. Embassy compound in the Shevchenko district.

The small blast didn’t cause any injuries or structural damage

“It was determined that an unknown assailant threw an unidentified explosive device onto the grounds of the diplomatic mission. Criminal proceedings have been initiated under Art. 258 (Terrorist Act) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine,” the statement read, according to The Mirror. The U.S. Department of State issued a travel warning in 2016 for U.S. citizens in Ukraine according to which “the situation in Ukraine is unpredictable and could change quickly.”

Police sent a rapid response unit and explosives experts to the attack site and are still hunting the terrorist.

No individual or group has claimed responsibility for the explosion, and the investigation has been handed over to the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), which is responsible for investigating crimes including terror acts.

Police investigate at the scene of the explosion on the embassy’s grounds

The device exploded after being thrown over a security fence

An spokesperson for the embassy told Ukrainian News that operations were not disrupted and officials were cooperating with the investigation. The embassy was open to visitors as usual this morning, local media reported.

Saudi Arabia Football Team Refuse to Observe Minute’s Silence for London Victims

June 8, 2017 at 11:09 am

Saudi football players were booed by the fans after they ignore the one minute silence.

(MEE)
— During a friendly against Australia, the Saudi Arabian football team on Thursday failed to line up and observe a minute’s silence in honour of victims of last weekend’s London Bridge terror attack.

Saudi Arabia met Australia for a World Cup qualifier at the Adelaide Oval stadium in South Australia. The two teams were preparing for kick off when the announcement was made for a minute’s silence to take place.

Images from the match show a single player from the Saudi team, Salman al-Faraj, seemingly standing for the silence, with his hands behind his back.

At the end of the minute, Australian fans loudly booed the Saudi team as they ignored the show of respect from the other team.

Two young Australian women, Sara Zelenak and Kirsty Boden, were victims in the London attack that left eight people dead.

Fox Sports presenter Adam Peacock stated that the Asian Football Confederation pre-approved the minute’s silence but Saudi officials declined to participate.

Pre game minute silence:
AFC approved it pre game.
Travelling Saudi officials said no.
FFA tried to reason, no avail and went ahead.

But Peacock added that the Saudi players were standing still during the minute, just not in a line, apart from team captain Osama Hawsawi, who continued to stretch and warm up.

Social media users took to twitter to express their anger.

Absolute disgrace Saudi Arabia's national football team refuse to take part in minutes silence for victims of london in game with Australia

Just when you thought Saudi Arabia couldn't be any more of a disease, they refuse a minute's silence vs. Australia for London victims. Scum.

This says a lot. Australia-Saudi WorldCup qualifier. Australian team observes minute of silence for victims of attack. Saudis don't.
