Syrian rebels launch second Damascus attack in three days

AMMAN/BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syrian rebels stormed a government-held area in northeastern Damascus on Tuesday for the second time in three days, sources on both sides said, the opposition's first such large scale foray in over four years inside the capital.

For rebels, the assault has shown they are still able to wage offensive action, though their situation remains very difficult near Damascus and across the country as a whole.

President Bashar al-Assad and the Syrian army, along with allied Russian, Iranian and Shi'ite militia forces, have gained the upper hand in the war for western Syria over the past 18 months, culminating in the full recapture of Aleppo in December.

The spokesman for one of the main insurgent groups involved in the attack told Reuters the new offensive began at 5.00 a.m., targeting an area rebel fighters had seized from government control on Sunday before being forced to retreat.

A Syrian military source told Reuters rebel fighters had entered the area, setting off a car bomb at the start of the attack. The source said a group of rebels that had entered the area had been encircled and were "being dealt with".

The rebel groups have launched the assault from their Eastern Ghouta stronghold to the east of the capital. Government forces have escalated military operations against Eastern Ghouta in recent weeks, seeking to tighten a siege on the area. The rebel assault aims partly to relieve that pressure.

The fighting has focused around the Abassiyin area of the northeastern Jobar district, some 2 km east of the Old City walls, at a major road junction leading into the capital.

A witness in the Tijara residential area near the fighting said dozens of tanks were deployed - an unusual scene for residents of inner Damascus, whose quarters been spared the widespread fighting on the fringes of the sprawling city.

Wael Alwan, spokesman for the Free Syrian Army (FSA) rebel group Failaq al Rahman, said: "We launched the new offensive and we restored all the points we withdrew from on Monday."

He said the attack strengthened the hand of the mainstream opposition ahead of new peace talks in Geneva on Thursday. "Our gains today will give strength to our presence in Geneva after tomorrow," he added.

MESSAGE TO RUSSIA

Another rebel official heading to Geneva said the attack showed the limitations of Russia's extensive military support.

"This is a military and political message to Russia that the regime is weak and has no full control and is unable to decisively tilt the balance in its favor militarily," Issam al Rayess, a spokesman for the FSA's Southern Front alliance of Western and Arab backed rebel groups.

The Syrian military source said: "They entered a narrow pocket - the same area of the (previous) breach - and now this group is being dealt with."

State media said rebels who infiltrated the city and Jobar had fled with scores arrested or killed but gave no details.

State television played what it said was footage taken on Tuesday morning on Faris al-Khouri street, which runs toward the Abbasiyin garages, and showed thick dark smoke rising in the distance.

The government says the attack is being carried out by fighters of the Nusra Front, a jihadist group that was al Qaeda's official affiliate in the Syrian war until it declared they had broken off ties last year. The Nusra Front is now part of an Islamist alliance called Tahrir al-Sham.

The attack has relieved pressure on rebels who have lost ground in the nearby areas of Qaboun and Barza, where the army says rebels have constructed an elaborate network of tunnels that provide essential goods that have for years helped Eastern Ghouta withstand a tough siege.

A rebel commander said the Syrian army was intensifying its shelling on areas where they had advanced in Jobar and towns across Eastern Ghouta. "There is no place that has not been hit," said Abu Abdo a field commander from Failaq al Rahman brigade.

The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which monitors the conflict, said at least 143 air raids were conducted by the Syrian army on rebel held eastern parts of Damascus, mostly targeting Jobar, since the rebels launched their offensive.

Syria shoots down Israeli military drone but IDF downplays attack

Vasudevan Sridharan

The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) confirmed the earlier reports that an Israeli drone, which was flying in the Syrian airspace, had been shot down on Monday (20 March).

However, the IDF played down the incident and said there were no security ramifications and the unmanned aerial vehicle did not contain any sensitive information.

Stopped short of admitting that the drone was intercepted by Syrian forces, IDF said they are still investigating the crash. Israel insisted there is no information leak from the spy aircraft, which is a low-key tactical surveillance drone operated by the IDF's Artillery Corps.

Images of the downed aircraft have been published in media outlets run by the Lebanese military group, Hezbollah. The group's Al-Manar website said the anti-aircraft weapons fired by the Syrian forces, loyal to President Bashar al-Assad, intercepted the plane over Quneitra.

The small drone usually wipes off the data in it whenever it crashes and is widely considered not a technologically advanced drone. It usually provides live images to the ground troops while on air. Although this is not the first time Israel has lost a drone in war zones but most of those incidents are often blamed on technical failures.

The latest incident comes at a time of high tensions between Syria and Israel as the latter's aircraft claimed to have pounded several targets during the weekend. Assad's forces have also responded in kind by firing off anti-aircraft missiles escalating the military confrontation to a whole new level.

China 'aims 1,500 missiles at US military bases' as war boss threatens to ‘SHOOT' enemies

CHINA has parked an arsenal of missiles within strike range of US army bases as its war chiefs ready “military hard power” for total conflict.

By Joshua Nevett /

Military bosses from the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) are aiming the firepower at Taiwan as part of an escalating military threat to the island.

US military bases in Okinawa are within range of the DF-16 ballistic missiles – which can hit targets with “pinpoint precision” from 1,500km away.

Chinese defence minister Feng Shih-kuan issued the shock announcement as tensions over the disputed South China Sea territory threaten to spill over into war.

His comments come after Taiwan revealed it has missiles capable of reaching Chinese shores last week.

WARNING: China has ramped up its missile stock

Speaking to lawmakers on Monday Feng said the missiles will bolster the “weapons modernization and military hard power” of China.

The minister did not reveal how many missiles had been deployed or where.

But Taiwan claim China is targeting the island with around 1,500 missiles.

U.S. Launches Over 7,000 Airstrikes In Iraq, Syria In Past Two Months

(ANTIWAR) With the fighting against ISIS increasingly confined to densely populated cities like Mosul and Raqqa, the US air war against them continues to escalate precipitously, with record numbers of airstrikes in recent months, and the coalition dropping over 7,000 munitions on Iraq and Syria in just the last two months.

Air Force Central Command spokeswoman Capt. Kathleen Atanasoff attributed to the continued increase in strikes to the effort to support Iraq’s invasion of Mosul, a city of well over a million people. With the fighting there heavily confined to residential neighborhoods, however, the heavy use of airstrikes must raise concern of large civilian tolls.

January now stands as the record month for strikes in the current war, with some 3,600 US and coalition strikes taking place. The number in February was roughly equal at 3,440, with the difference attributable to there being less days in February.

Capt. Atanasoff wasn’t presenting this as a campaign at its peak, however, saying that as the military offensive on the ground moves forward, the US air campaign tends to increase, as the clearing of territory opens up new areas to US strikes in the effort to “hunt down and kill ISIS.” She added that the number of strikes in Afghanistan will also increase in Afghanistan, with the weather making it easier to carry out strikes.
