Iowa Pipeline Bursts Only Days After Trump Approved DAPL Construction

The cause of the leak is still under investigation.

By: Derrick Broze / AntiMedia

Hanlontown, IA — Beginning around 5:30 am on Wednesday morning, local authorities in Hanlontown, Iowa, realized the Magellan Pipeline was leaking what amounted to 138,600 gallons of diesel fuel. KIMT in Iowa reported that emergency responders with the Worth County Sheriff’s Office, Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Worth/Mitchell County Emergency Management, and Freeborn County Emergency Management were all on the scene. The cause of the leak is still under investigation.

Later in the afternoon, KIMT provided an update on the situation:

“The owners of the pipeline that leaked over 138,000 gallons of diesel fuel in Worth County Wednesday say the spill has been contained and the fuel had not flowed into any waterways.

Magellan Midstream Partners says the leak has caused no injuries or evacuations so far. Over 70 people, including Magellan representatives, emergency crews, regulators and contracts, are on the scene Thursday.

“Magellan says operations on this section of their pipeline system have been halted and repairs are expected to begin soon. There is no estimate on when the pipeline could go back into operation.”

Tom Byers, Manager of Government and Media Affairs for Magellan Mainstream Partners, told KIMT, “There will be an investigation on what caused release and what can be learned from this to try and help us and ensure this doesn’t happen again.” Unfortunately, this is not the first time Magellan has dealt with spills from pipelines. The U.S. Department of Justice and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently settled federal charges against Magellan related to three previous spills.

Magellan, based out of Tulsa, Oklahoma, agreed to pay $2 million for a civil penalty and another $16 million for relief across its 11,000-mile pipeline system in the Midwest, the Oil and Gas Journal reported. Magellan, formerly known as Williams Pipe Line Co. LLC., was sued for their role in the spill of 5,177 barrels of petroleum products, which spilled into waterways. Magellan also contaminated the Pierre Bayou north of Texas City, Texas, when 482 barrels of gasoline leaked. Two Magellan pipelines in Nemaha, Nebraska, also burst after being struck by construction machinery and leaking 650 barrels of diesel fuel, 655 barrels of jet fuel, and 1,529 barrels of gasoline.

This latest spill comes only days after President Trump issued executive orders and a presidential memorandum regarding moving forward on the Keystone XL pipeline and the Dakota Access pipeline. Both projects have faced heavy resistance from indigenous activists, environmentalists, and private property advocates who view eminent domain as theft. Will this latest spill have any effect on Trump’s upcoming decisions? Or will the deep pockets of Big Oil and the banksters behind the pipelines be enough to sway Mr. Make America Great Again? Only time will tell. Hopefully, for the sake of the Earth and humanity, Trump will end the suppression of alternative energy sources and allow the Oilgarchy to collapse under the weight of its unsustainable products.

Human-pig HYBRID? Scientists hoping to create part man, part pig organs

A HYBRID human-pig embryo has been injected into a sow’s womb as scientists push the ethical boundaries of science in the hope that they can create lifesaving donor organs.

Scientists from the Salk Institute – a biological research organisation in California – have taken cells from pigs and people to create an embryo that was then inserted into a female pig.

As part of initial experiments, several different types of human cells were inserted into pig embryos in petri dishes to determine which cells were the best match for the pig embryo.

The human cells which worked best with the pigs’ were infant ones which have the potential to develop into all adult cell types – known as a pluripotent cell.

The cells that survived eventually formed a human/pig embryo, which were then injected into female pigs and allowed to develop for around a month.

Pigs' hearts are similar to humans

Lead author of the research, Izpisua Belmonte, said: “This is long enough for us to try to understand how the human and pig cells mix together early on without raising ethical concerns about mature chimeric animals.”

However, even the strongest surviving cells were relatively weak, but at this stage it is more of a trial and error process, the scientists pointed out.

Dr Belmonte: “At this point, we wanted to know whether human cells can contribute at all to address the ‘yes or no’ question.

“Now that we know the answer is yes, our next challenge is to improve efficiency and guide the human cells into forming a particular organ in pigs.”

To do this, the researchers will turn to genetic modification to edit pig genomes so that they can fit human cells in.

The team are now on the brink of creating a genetic chimera – an organism made up of cells from multiple species’ DNA – that is part human, part pig.

The hope is that the scientists will eventually be able to grow organs in pigs that will be suitable for human use via transplants.

With a global organ donor shortage, scientists have identified pigs as an ideal candidate to help as their organs, specifically the heart and kidneys, are very similar to that of a humans.

As such, scientists are hoping to grow organs that are part human, which can then be transferred to a patient.

Dr Belmonte: “The ultimate goal is to grow functional and transplantable tissue or organs, but we are far away from that.”

However, he added: “This is an important first step.”

Rebuild military & ban radical Muslims: Trump signs executive actions at Pentagon

Edited time: 28 Jan, 2017 13:30

President Donald Trump signed two executive actions during a Pentagon swearing-in ceremony for Secretary of Defense James Mattis. One will "begin a great rebuilding of the armed services," while the other covered entry of foreigners into the US.

"To ensure the sacrifices of our military are supported by the actions of our government," Trump said, the first executive action, titled "The rebuilding of the United States Armed Forces," called for new planes, ships and tools for the military.

"As we prepare our budget request for Congress... our military strength will be questioned by no one, but neither will our dedication to peace, we do want peace," Trump said.

The second executive action, titled
"Protection of the nation from foreign terrorist entry into the United States," adds"new vetting measures" to keep "radical Islamic terrorists" out of the US, Trump said. "We don't want 'em here."

Executive actions like the ones Trump signed Friday are informal and fall under a vague category that encompasses much of what a president does when it comes to dealings with Congress or an administration. Executive orders, however, are legally binding.

Representative Eliot L. Engel (D-New York) issued a response on behalf of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, of which he is the ranking member.

“This is a profoundly dark day for our country," Engel wrote. “In 1939, when Jewish refugees aboard the ship St. Louis could look ashore and see the lights of Miami, they thought the United States would be their salvation. But the power of fear and cowardice prevailed, sending those poor souls back across the ocean, many to their deaths."

“Today, fear and cowardice are winning again," he added. "President Trump is slamming the door on the world's most desperate refugees, whose eyes are gazing upon our shores today, seeking the promise of America that has illuminated the world for more than two centuries."

Trump's appearance at the Pentagon's Hall of Heroes was a marked difference from his remarks at the CIA memorial for fallen agents on Saturday. The president mostly read from prepared remarks and did not veer away from the topics at hand.

Draft version of the actions were circulated by the media on Friday morning. It has not been confirmed if the language in them matches what the president signed because neither have been released yet.

According to an executive action draft obtained by the Washington Post, Mattis will be charged with coming up with a 30-day "readiness review" to determine changes needed in "manning, training, equipping, maintenance, munitions and infrastructure."

'Enemies of Israel Will End Up in Ash Bin of History' Netanyahu Says

01-27-2017

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, screen capture

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is warning enemies who threaten Israel that they will end up in the "ash bin" of history.

The prime minister spoke to a crowd at a Holocaust memorial on the eve of International Holocaust Remembrance Day.

He said there's anti-Semitism in the West, but the greatest danger comes from Iran.

Netanyahu told the gathering at the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial in Jerusalem that President Trump understands the dangers of the Iran nuclear deal.

In 2015, Iran agreed to a deal with world powers including the U.S. to limit its ability to enrich uranium in exchange for the removal of international economic sanctions.

Netanyahu said Israel will take all the necessary measures to stop Tehran from getting nuclear weapons, including working with the Trump administration.

Trump vowed at times during the presidential campaign either to walk away from the deal or to renegotiate.

It is not clear what action he will take now that he is in office.
