Nasa detects two space rocks heading towards Earth: A comet and an unknown object

This week a comet that started life in the outer reaches of our solar system will be visible from Earth for the first time, as it approaches our planet’s orbit. The comet will be 66 million miles (106 million km) from Earth at its closest approach.

Another recently-discovered object, called 2016 WF9, has also been taking a scenic tour of our solar system, approaching Jupiter’s orbit at its greatest distance from the sun. On 25 February this year, it will approach Earth’s orbit, passing at a distance of nearly 32 million miles (51 million kilometers) from Earth. But Nasa still doesn’t know whether the object is an asteroid or a comet.

First object: Comet

The comet, C/2016 U1 NEOWISE, “has a good chance of becoming visible through a good pair of binoculars, although we can’t be sure because a comet’s brightness is notoriously unpredictable,” said Paul Chodas, manager of Nasa’s Center for Near-Earth Object (NEO) Studies at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

This week, comet C/2016 U1 NEOWISE will be in the south-eastern sky shortly before dawn. Nasa is unsure exactly how large it is.

It is moving farther south each day and it will reach its closest point to the sun, inside the orbit of Mercury, on 14 January, before heading back out to the outer reaches of the solar system for an orbit lasting thousands of years.

While it will be visible from Earth, it is not considered a threat to our planet.

Second object: Asteroid or comet?

Next month, another object, which is a blurred line between an asteroid and a comet, might also be visible.

This object was discovered by Nasa’s NEOWISE mission, the asteroid-and-comet-hunting portion of the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) mission, on 27 November last year.

Over the course of 4.9 Earth-years, it has travelled inward, passing under the main asteroid belt and the orbit of Mars until it will swing just inside Earth’s own orbit in February this year.

“The trajectory of 2016 WF9 is well understood, and the object is not a threat to Earth for the foreseeable future,: says Nasa.

What scientists do know is that 2016 WF9 is relatively large: roughly 0.3 to 0.6 miles (0.5 to 1 kilometre) across. It is quite dark, reflecting only a few per cent of the light that falls on its surface. Its body resembles a comet in its reflectivity and orbit, but appears to lack the characteristic dust and gas cloud that defines a comet.

2016 WF9 could have cometary origins,” said Deputy Principal Investigator James “Gerbs” Bauer at JPL.

This object illustrates that the boundary between asteroids and comets is a blurry one; perhaps over time this object has lost the majority of the volatiles that linger on or just under its surface.

Neowise

After discovering more than 34,000 asteroids during its original mission, NEOWISE was brought out of hibernation in December of 2013 to find and learn more about asteroids and comets that could pose an impact hazard to Earth.

If 2016 WF9 is a comet, it would be the 10th discovered since reactivation, but if it turns out to be an asteroid, it would be the 100th discovered since reactivation.

Thirty-one asteroids that NEOWISE has discovered pass within about 20 lunar distances from Earth’s orbit, and 19 are more than 460 feet (140 metres) in size but reflect less than 10 per cent of the sunlight that falls on them.

Russia & China announce new ‘unspecified’ measures to US’ anti-missile system in S. Korea

Russia and China will be taking further “unspecified” countermeasures to the US plan to deploy an anti-missile system in South Korea, according to Chinese news agency, Xinhua.

According to the statement, Moscow and Beijing urge all those involved in the system’s deployment to consider the escalation in tensions it would lead to, and to exercise restraint. But the two also reaffirm their commitment to a nuclear-free North Korea, and believe diplomacy should be the way forward.

The statement comes shortly after a Thursday meeting co-chaired by Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Igor Morgulov and Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Kong Xuanyou.

The Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system is to be deployed on a golf course in South Korea, prompting worries from Russia and China about their security being compromised by the anti-missile system’s powerful radar.
One of the concerns the two have with the US system is its radar’s ability to peer into Russian and Chinese territory.

Moscow has also appraised the situation around the Korean peninsula as “exhibiting a high likelihood of becoming volatile” in a statement. Aside from mentioning regional rivalries, the Russian Foreign Ministry emphasized “the counter-productiveness of the line being taken by certain governments in exacerbating these tensions and instigating an arms race in the subregion, as well as the increase in the scale of military drills.”

The decision to deploy was first announced in July, promising a system by the end of the year. This led to strong opposition from Russia and China, as well as a 100,000-strong petition by American activists urging the US to reconsider. Reassuring people that the system would “not undermine China’s or Russia’s strategic deterrent,” the Obama administration shot the petition down.

The thinking over the summer was that the North Korean threat to its southern neighbor must be kept in check. Pyongyang’s rising number of ICBM tests and its escalating rhetoric against Seoul contributed to this. Brushing aside criticism by China and Russia, Washington said that its hardware in Korea will be focused “solely” on countering the North Korean nuclear and ballistic missile threat.

Less than a week ago, Seoul reaffirmed its commitment to deploying THAAD, leading to another chorus of protest from Beijing, which complained that it “repeatedly expressed” its concerns, and that the system was “no good to peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.”

“We also hope that a proper solution that accommodates each other’s concerns can be found through communication and consultation between China and the ROK,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang also told journalists at the briefing.

Seoul responded almost immediately by saying that THAAD deployment is “a sovereign and self-defensive measure.”

South Korea has also complained about China taking what it sees as “retaliatory measures” over the decision to deploy. These included a partial ban on Korean TV, as well as some pop artists. The automotive industry was also targeted, and an investigation was launched into Korean retail giant Lotte, which does business in China.

Once again this Thursday, South Korea warned that it may complain to China over the effect its indirect response to THAAD has had: “We plan to present the relation between China’s actions that have been pointed out by our companies and the THAAD deployment during a meeting on Friday regarding the free trade agreement between South Korea and China,” Trade Minister Joo Hyung-hwan told parliament.

‘Anti-Russian witch-hunt in US becoming surreal’

If you build up an atmosphere similar to the McCarthy era, you get people reacting in the way they did, said former British MP George Galloway, commenting on the Twitter conspiracy craze after an RT broadcast interrupted C-SPAN live.

On Thursday the US TV network C-SPAN was interrupted for ten minutes by a broadcast of the RT Channel. C-SPAN said the network does not believe it was hacked. An initial investigation into the incident has shown it was caused by "an internal routing issue," as RT is one of the networks C-SPAN regularly monitors.

Meanwhile, social media platforms have been flooded with conspiracy theories.

RT: Do you share the suspicions of some members of the public over the incident?

George Galloway: There is no end to the genius, to the reach of President Putin. He was obviously sitting there in the Kremlin deciding to invade the time of C-SPAN, which not very many people in the US watch. What’s next? The Disney Channel? The Mickey Mouse Club House will suddenly look like the Kremlin and instead of Mickey – President Putin, or Mr. Sergey Lavrov, or someone will give a speech to the nation?

It is becoming surreal this whole anti-Russian witch-hunt in the US, much of it generated here in London in fact in a building just a couple of hundred yards from me here in central London. What it really probably means – is that the staff at C-SPAN, like all sensible people, are watching RT, much of the day, and somehow that which they were watching ended up on their network…

RT: Why do you think we saw the reaction we did, to what happened?

GG: Clearly if you build up an atmosphere, as they did in the 1950’s during the McCarthy period of mass hysteria of people literally looking under their beds at night for Russians with snow on their boots getting ready to subvert their family life, never mind their national life, if you build that kind of atmosphere, you’re going to get people…on social media reacting in the way that they did. I am sure C-SPAN are right – it was a routing matter...

RT: Do you think this incident will be used against Russia later, despite what C-SPAN says? After all, we've previously seen how some high ranking US officials are making serious accusations despite a lack of evidence?

GG: Who knows. Perhaps our interviews are about to be invaded by the Disney Channel, by Peppa Pig, or one of the other heroes. I have very young children, so I am an expert on that channel. I think the surreal nature of this was best summed up in the press conference that Donald Trump gave the other day, relating to a fake dossier like the dossiers that were produced about Iraq before the war was written by a British intelligence agent…given to a British ambassador to Moscow, and he too has been outed; and then into the hands of the leader of the war party John McCain; then to the FBI; then to the CIA. Of course, all fell apart under the spotlight of any kind of forensics within hours of having been made public by the fake news channels – CNN and BuzzFeed.

So within a very fetid, febrile atmosphere now as the days are counting until a man who promised good relations with Russia and an end to the drive for sanctions and war against Russia is about to become the President of the US. They won’t give up trying to stop him, and if they can’t stop him, they are trying to put him in a corner. If that means blackmailing him with nonexistent tales of disreputable moral behavior in Moscow or anywhere else, they’ll be ready to do that. The blackmailers are them, not in Moscow.

The statements, views and opinions expressed in this column are solely those of the author and do not necessarily represent those of RT.

Video of cops beating Massachusetts man so bad, all the officers were fired

Three police officers so horrifically beat a man in custody, all of them — a sergeant and two veteran patrolmen — were fired. Now, Police Chief Eric Gillis has released video footage of the brutal attack — and what it shows makes shockingly clear why they lost their jobs.

On June 19, 2016, David Desjardins, Jr., became too inebriated at a bar in the Six Flags New England amusement park; but when a bartender cut him off, he acted belligerently and began arguing. Park security called the police, MassLive reports, who confronted Desjardins and had to use pepper spray several times before they were able to make the arrest.

Agawam Police Officers John P. Moccio and Edward B. Connor, and Sergeant Anthony Grasso, then dealt with Desjardins during the booking process, but claimed in reports the man was drunk and unruly — thus their use of force had been justified. Desjardins was charged with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and assault and battery on a police officer.

"Under the policies and procedures, the use of the force was authorized," said Attorney John Connor, who represents the officers, reports 22News, "They may disagree with that, but that doesn't mean that these officer didn't act in accordance with the policies and their training."

However, video shows Desjardins stripped down to his underwear and seemingly — despite the lack of audio recording — only vaguely disruptive and certainly not deserving of the beating he then receives.

As footage begins, the man sits on a bench in the station and appears to receive a stern talking-to by one officer. Suddenly the officer gestures to another and the pair, along with two others, violently grab Desjardins and force him into a holding cell, containing the typical metal toilet and a concrete slab without any padding.

Desjardins weakly attempts to wriggle free from one officer's grip and is then roughly forced down onto the concrete slab with three of the four officers holding him down — as one of them uses a baton to beat his back. When that seems not to satisfy the officer, he takes a step back and — as the other two lie on top of the drunken man, holding him down — begins pummeling Desjardins' kneecaps and ankles with the baton.

Video shows the cops clearly have control of the situation and resistance from Desjardins, if any, is both minimal and likely in self-defense.

As the two officers grip the man's wrists and head, the third then proceeds to smash the baton against Desjardins' shins — worse, footage seems to show the tip of the baton being used to jab him in the abdomen or groin.

In obvious pain from this, Desjardins smacks his foot against the concrete slab.

When the officers seem to relent to leave the cell, it becomes apparent one had been using two hands to press the man's face onto the slab — but even as they move to leave, and he slowly sits up, one officer still casually hits him with the baton.

As Desjardins stands, the verbal altercation continues — but one of the officers then shoves him into the corner of the slab, smashing his head on the concrete and cinder block wall. One officer puts his hands on Desjardins face as if to poke him in the eye or smother him — and though it looks like the beating will begin again, officers cuff his wrists and ankles.

Fully two minutes elapse from the time Moccio, Connor, and Grasso forced Desjardins into the cell until they finally stopped the brutal assault.

Chief Gillis has come under fire for his decision to terminate the officers' employment — but he has no doubt the firings were justified.

"When I saw the video I was shocked by it," he told MassLive. "I knew that it was very serious and as the investigation proceeded it became more and more clear to me how serious it really was.

"As chief of police it's my job to make sure that our officers conduct themselves appropriately at all times and deal with the people we come into contact with appropriately at all times."

Hampden District Attorney Anthony Gulluni informed Gillis recently there would be no charges filed against any of the officers over the barbarous beating.

Moccio, Connor, and Grasso have all appealed their terminations.

UN calls on European countries to protect refugees from freezing to death & abuse

Published time: 14 Jan, 2017 11:40

At least five refugees have reportedly perished from exposure in a European cold snap since the beginning of the year amid reports of police violence against asylum seekers, including confiscation of phones and clothing, the UN’s refugee agency reported.

On Friday at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, a spokeswoman for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Cecile Pouilly, expressed grave concern over the reported death of asylum seekers who were“trying to enter or move across Europe” amid harsh winter conditions.

The bodies of two Iraqi men who had apparently died from exposure and exhaustion were found last Friday in southeastern Bulgaria near its border with Turkey. In addition, a young Somali woman was found dead in the same region, while two teenagers who had been accompanying her were taken to the hospital with frostbite. The group was found after spending five days in a forest in extreme cold, the UN official said.

Meanwhile, a 20-year-old Afghan man froze to death in Greece after crossing the Evros River on the border between Greece and Turkey when night temperatures plunged below -10 degrees Celsius. The body of a young man from Pakistan was found on the Turkish side of the border in the same region.

“We reiterate our call to increase safe pathways for the admission of people in need of protection, including via resettlement, family reunification, private sponsorship and other mechanisms to provide a viable alternative to irregular movement and reliance on human smugglers,” Pouilly said.

The UN official also called on European nations to stop the practice of “pushing back refugees and migrants from inside their territory to neighboring countries.”

“In several cases, refugees and migrants have alleged that police have subjected them to violence,” she said, noting“many have also reported that their phones were confiscated or destroyed, thus preventing them from calling for help once stranded. Some even reported items of clothing being confiscated thus further exposing them to the harsh winter conditions.”

Thousands of asylum seekers remain in unheated premises in Greece and Serbia, Pouilly reported. On the Greek island of Samos, some 1,000 refugees, including families with young children, are living in tents. In Serbia, some 1,200 males have been staying “in inadequate informal sites in Belgrade.”

“As a life saving measure, we continue to provide heaters, blankets and winter clothes to residents of informal sites who have not yet agreed to move to government centers. We urge the authorities to continue their efforts to expand emergency shelter capacities, with particular consideration to the specific needs of unaccompanied children,” Pouilly said.

Meanwhile, the UN children’s agency, UNICEF, has warned that children are particularly prone to the dangers of cold weather.

“It’s about saving lives, not about red tape and keeping to bureaucratic arrangements,” Sarah Crowe, a UNICEF spokeswoman told journalists in Geneva.

UNICEF data has shown a spike in the number of unaccompanied and separated children arriving in Europe. In Italy alone, the number has more than doubled since 2015, reaching 25,800, the Guardian reported.
