'THE EARTH MOVED'

Dramatic moment massive fireball terrifies tourists as it lights up the night sky over Spain’s Costa del Sol

The rock, travelling in excess of 72,000 kmph, smashed into the earth so hard that people thought it was an earthquake

A “NOISE like a thunder” was reported by shocked tourists and residents when this massive meteor fireball smashed into earth at 72,000 kmph.

Witnesses described “the earth moving” comparing the tremendous impact in southern Spain to a small earthquake or explosion.

PIPELINE SPILLS 176,000 GALLONS OF OIL INTO CREEK NEAR DAKOTA ACCESS PROTESTS

ALEXA ERICKSON

An estimated 150 miles from the location of the months-long protests over the Dakota Access pipeline and its threat of Standing Rock Sioux tribe’s water supply, a pipeline in the western part of North Dakota has reportedly spilled over 130,000 gallons of oil into a creek.

The Belle Fourche pipeline lost a total of 4,200 barrels of crude oil, or over 176,000 gallons, before operators shut it down. The majority of the oil ended up in the Ashe Coulee Creek. Wendy Owen, the spokeswoman for Wyoming-based True Ceompanies, which owns the pipeline, said it is unknown exactly what caused the spill, though she claims the prevailing theory regards the pipeline being buried on a hill near the creek. The “hillside sloughed,” potentially rupturing the line.

Due to a blizzard that occurred last week, it’s been difficult to asses the full damages and environmental impact of the spill. It is unknown when the pipeline initially began to leak. “We have no estimate on when or if it will be operational,” Department of Health spokeswoman Jennifer Skjod said of the pipeline.

According to the Associated Press, the company has declared 36 other spills since 2006, which accumulates to more than 320,000 gallons of petroleum products. The majority of the 6-inch steel Belle Fourche pipeline is underground, though a portion of it was built aboveground, where it crosses Ashe Coulee Creek. Owen noted that the pipeline was built in the 1980s, and used to harbour oil from oil wells close by.

Bill Suess, an environmental scientist with the North Dakota Health Department, explained that the recent pipeline spill was discovered Monday by a landowner near Belfield. He also said that the spill covered about six miles of the creek, damaging an unknown amount of private and U.S. Forest Service land residing along the waterway. Though the creek connects to the Little Missouri River, Seuss assured no oil had gotten that far, and so people need not be concerned over the threat of their drinking water. Though the creek was free-flowing when the spill took place, the water is now frozen. Roughly 60 workers came to the site on Monday to take part in the cleanup, but some of the oil is trapped beneath the frozen creek, making it difficult to truly assess the damages.

“It’s going to take some time,” Suess said. “Obviously there will be some component of the cleanup that will go toward spring.”

Oil-field related spills have given True Cos. a bad reputation. This includes a January 2015 pipeline break into the Yellowstone River, in which the 32,000-gallon spill temporarily halted water supplies for the community of Glendive, Montana. The city, which resides downstream from the river, discovered oil in their water treatment system.

Kevin Pranis, a spokesman for the Laborers District Council of Minnesota and North Dakota, which represents some workers behind the $3.8 billion Dakota Access pipeline that covers four states, noted that regulators need to ensure better oversight of the True Cos.

True cos. owns Black Hills Trucking Inc. as well. The company has been accused of illegally dumping saltwater, which is a byproduct of oil production, on a North Dakota road back in 2014. The outcome is a $950,000 fine against Black Hills Trucking.

U.K. Approves Unprecedented Surveillance Powers

BY PNW STAFF DECEMBER 13, 2016

On November 29, 2016, a law was passed in the U.K. that dramatically expands the scope of domestic surveillance.

The Investigatory Powers Bill was approved by legislators and granted royal assent in a move that continues the transformation of the U.K. into a modern version of Orwell's ideal surveillance state.

The Investigatory Powers Bill both retroactively makes legal the spying exposed by Edward Snowden and grants sweeping powers of Internet data collection to police and government officials.

The new law was initially opposed by the Labour Party but due to internal party strife and a focus on Britain's exit from the EU, political attention and media coverage was shifted away from privacy concerns.

Political resistance soon crumbled under fairly weak concessions and it was largely ignored in the mainstream media. Now, as the UK again tightens the leash on its subjects, other nations may look to follow its example in controlling their populations.

But what changes does the law actually bring?

Internet and App Tracking

Internet service providers will be required to maintain 12 months of records on every customer that detail exactly which sites are visited when, for how long, what communications are sent and to whom as well as what applications are used on smartphones.

The government will provide funding to the companies to conduct this surveillance and retain the data. This "data retention notice", as it is called, will allow the browsing history to be both searchable and instantly accessible by police without the need for a warrant using a specialized search engine available to the government.

The government tried to defend the law by saying that it does not allow the tracking of webpages.

Instead, it tracks websites. So, whereas the records will report that an individual visited the BBC and stayed on the site for 30 minutes, it won't point to the specific article read.

But truly, the distinction is all but meaningless. For most people, so much of what we do and who we are is intimately tied to our online lives.

Imagine what can be done with full access to your browsing history. Police and government officials can view your web visits to find out your medical conditions, sexual interests, political beliefs and embarrassing habits.

The possibilities for blackmail and social control are virtually endless.

Weaken Encryption

Through what is known as a "technical capability notice" the government can now demand that a tech company compromise the encryption of a customer and do so in secret and without the need for a warrant.

On the surface, this poses grave privacy concerns if it is now impossible to communicate privately over the web without fear of government snooping. But dig deeper and the danger is even greater.

If encryption is weakened for the British government, then it is also weakened against criminals and foreign actors as well.

Financial transactions, private medical data and personal information are all threatened by a State that believes it has the right to know the most intimate details of its subjects' lives.

Outlaw Whistleblowers

Those caught disclosing the use of the technical capability notices or other surveillance practices will face a fine and up to 12 months in prison.

So, it is virtually assured that the technical capability notices and mass surveillance will be conducted both en masse and in secret and that it will be impossible to determine the level of invasion that has begun to take place.

Lack of Oversight

The Investigatory Powers Bill allows for rank and file police officers to access the data as well as government officials. The law does add a weak level of protection for journalists by establishing a judicial commissioner, likely a retired judge, who will need to sign off on warrants for certain targets of surveillance.

But curiously, even if the judicial commissioner denies the warrant, the police can simply declare the matter urgent and obtain the data without the warrant.

Let's also keep in mind that the surveillance of media companies will be kept secret and that there will be no mechanism to challenge it in court.

The U.K.'s National Union of Journalists released a statement a week ago, that declared: "The bill is an attack on democracy and on the publics right to know and it enables unjustified, secret, State interference in the press."

Indeed, it would seem that there is little moral high ground left to condemn China when the U.K. has now legislated surveillance this pervasive and secret.

The U.K. has grown increasingly comfortable with mass surveillance under the watchful eye of public cameras but nothing this intrusive has ever been tried in a modern democracy.

Abuse is almost a certainty and even when the government isn't actively promoting a social agenda and stifling dissent, such omnipresent surveillance has been shown to have a chilling effect on communication.

As the world watches the British government overreach yet again, it likely won't be long before other States follow their lead.

Better watch what you type into that address bar from now on.

Exclusive: China installs weapons systems on artificial islands - U.S. think tank

By David Brunnstrom

By David Brunnstrom

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - China appears to have installed weapons, including anti-aircraft and anti-missile systems, on all seven of the artificial islands it has built in the South China Sea, a U.S. think tank reported on Wednesday, citing new satellite imagery.

The Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative (AMTI) at the Center for Strategic and International Studies said its findings come despite statements by the Chinese leadership that Beijing has no intention to militarize the islands in the strategic trade route, where territory is claimed by several countries.

AMTI said it had been tracking construction of hexagonal structures on Fiery Cross, Mischief and Subi reefs in the Spratly Islands since June and July. China has already built military length airstrips on these islands.

"It now seems that these structures are an evolution of point-defense fortifications already constructed at China’s smaller facilities on Gaven, Hughes, Johnson, and Cuarteron reefs," it said citing images taken in November and made available to Reuters.

"This model has gone through another evolution at (the) much-larger bases on Fiery Cross, Subi and Mischief reefs."

Satellite images of Hughes and Gaven reefs showed what appeared to be anti-aircraft guns and what were likely to be close-in weapons systems (CIWS) to protect against cruise missile strikes, it said.

Images from Fiery Cross Reef showed towers that likely contained targeting radar, it said.

AMTI said covers had been installed on the towers at Fiery Cross, but the size of platforms on these and the covers suggested they concealed defense systems similar to those at the smaller reefs.

"These gun and probable CIWS emplacements show that Beijing is serious about defense of its artificial islands in case of an armed contingency in the South China Sea," it said.

"Among other things, they would be the last line of defense against cruise missiles launched by the United States or others against these soon-to-be-operational air bases."

AMTI director Greg Poling said AMTI had spent months trying to figure out what the purposes of the structures was.

"This is the first time that we're confident in saying they are anti-aircraft and CIWS emplacements. We did not know that they had systems this big and this advanced there," he told Reuters.

"This is militarization. The Chinese can argue that it's only for defensive purposes, but if you are building giant anti-aircraft gun and CIWS emplacements, it means that you are prepping for a future conflict.

"They keep saying they are not militarizing, but they could deploy fighter jets and surface-to-air missiles tomorrow if they wanted to," he said. "Now they have all the infrastructure in place for these interlocking rings of defense and power projection."The report said the installations would likely back up a defensive umbrella provided by a future deployment of mobile surface-to-air missile (SAM) platforms like the HQ-9 system deployed to Woody Island in the Paracel Islands, farther to the north in the South China Sea.

It forecast that such a deployment could happen "at any time," noting a recent Fox News report that components for SAM systems have been spotted at the southeastern Chinese port of Jieyang, possibly destined for the South China Sea.

China has said military construction on the islands will be limited to necessary defensive requirements.

The United States has criticized what it called China's militarization of its maritime outposts and stressed the need for freedom of navigation by conducting periodic air and naval patrols near them that have angered Beijing.

U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, who takes office on Jan. 20, has also criticized Chinese behavior in the South China Sea while signaling he may adopt a tougher approach to China's assertive behavior in the region than President Barack Obama.

The State Department said it would not comment on intelligence matters, but spokesman John Kirby added:

"We consistently call on China as well as other claimants to commit to peacefully managing and resolving disputes, to refrain from further land reclamation and construction of new facilities and the militarization of disputed features."
