US Slammed After Drone Strike Kills At Least 15 Civilians In Afghanistan

By James Holbrooks

On Thursday, the United Nations condemned the killing of at least 15 civilians by a U.S. drone strike in the Nangarhar province of eastern Afghanistan, and called for an independent investigation to be initiated.

From a U.N. Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) press release:

In the early morning of 28 September, an international military forces unmanned aerial vehicle conducted an airstrike, reportedly targeting members of ISIL/Daesh, that struck a civilian home killing the 15 civilians.

The civilians had gathered in a village to celebrate the return of tribal elder from the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca and were reportedly sleeping in a guesthouse of the elder when the airstrike occurred. Civilian victims of the strike included students and a teacher, as well as members of families …

All killed were men, with a total of 13 others — including a child — wounded.

The UNAMA condemned the strike, and reiterated “the need for all parties to the conflict to adhere to their obligations under international humanitarian law” before calling for a “prompt, independent, impartial, transparent, and effective investigation into this incident.”

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed via press release on September 28 that it was, in fact, the United States who ordered the strike, calling Nangarhar province “a focus for Daesh activity since 2015,” and claiming the area is used “to train, equip, disseminate propaganda, and expand their control over innocent Afghans.”

CENTCOM declined to comment further on Wednesday’s strike, stating:

We won’t discuss the details of the specific counter-terrorism operation conducted in Nangarhar on 28 September because we are still reviewing all materials related to the strike. We take every possible measure to avoid civilian casualties in these operations, and will continue to work with Afghan authorities to determine if there is cause for additional investigation as we partner with the Afghan government in the broader fight against terrorism.

Casualties of war, and such.

The news comes as the latest in a rash of recent blunders carried out by the United States in the Middle East, both militarily and diplomatically.

Less than two weeks ago, a U.S.-led coalition airstrike killed 62 Syrian soldiers, purportedly due to bad intel. Days after that, following an attack on a U.N. aid convoy, the U.S. immediately dumped the whole of the blame on Russia — but was forced to back off that accusation after Russia began questioning the validity of the attack.

Crowd gathers in LA after person killed in officer-involved shooting identified as 'teen'

Edited time: 2 Oct, 2016 16:28

At least one person was killed and another injured in an officer-involved shooting following a car chase in South Los Angeles. Relatives said the victim was a teenager.

One person has died after a shooting involving Los Angeles police officers, KABC local news reports citing authorities.

The fatality was reported in the area of 107th Street and Western Avenue, where earlier in the day officers ended a vehicle pursuit that began at about 1:00pm.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department's Media Relations Section, at some point during the chase for the subject, an officer-involved shooting took place.

The Los Angeles Fire Department confirmed that a person had died in the shooting and a gun was recovered at the scene, but did not say what led to it.

"The officers gave chase, a foot pursuit, and went eastbound at some point on 107th Street to the rear of a residence," said Sgt. Barry Montgomery.

"It was at that time that the officer-involved shooting occurred. The officers summoned paramedics who responded to scene, and unfortunately the suspect succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene."

The person killed was identified as Carnell Snell Jr; relatives told local media he was 18 years old.

"He was just at my house, and we got a phone call that said the police shot him five times in the back," Monique Morgan, Snell's mother, told KABC.

Residents and members of the Black Lives Matter movement came to the parking lot of a strip mall where police were investigating the incident. The crowds were shouting at police and photographers, local media reported.

"The community is traumatized. Immediately traumatized because it happened in this community. So you've got to have a controlled vent - the people have to vent," activist General Jeff said as quoted by KABC.

Witnesses also told KTLA Snell was running away with his hands in the air when he was shot.

"This is a 18-year-old boy, this is somebody's son, this is somebody's friend, this is somebody's brother and you killed him. I don't care what your story is. I believe the community; I don't believe the lying police," said Melina Abdullah, a Black Lives Matter activist, told KTLA.

The protesters marched throughout the night. Police are still probing the incident.

Community leaders and residents have expressed anger after
police fatally shot an African-American man following a chase through a south Los Angeles neighborhood.

The incident happened on Saturday after police moved to pull over a car with paper plates in Westmont, believing that it may have been stolen, authorities said.

The driver, however, did not stop, prompting the officers to chase the vehicle. At some point, the passenger got out and ran into the back of a house, where he was shot and killed by officers.

Police said that a weapon was recovered from the scene, but refused to say what it was or what led to the fatal shooting.

In a tweeted massage, activists in a Los Angeles chapter of Black Lives Matter, said the victim, identified as 18-year-old Carnell Snell Jr., was shot by police while he was holding his hands up.

The victim’s sister, Trenell Snell said she was hanging out with some friends when she saw her brother running.

She said she started running too, but she fell over when she heard the gunfire. She then got up and saw her brother was on the ground, handcuffed.

"At the end of the day, the cops came and shot my brother," she said. "Killed my brother."

Snell's mother said that she wanted to see the body to confirm whether he is her son, but officers wouldn't allow her to do so.

Protesters gathered around the scene, with some shouting at police officers.

"People are fired up and can't take it anymore," one woman said. “A police officer should not be the judge, the jury and the executioner,” she added.

Local activist Earl Ofari Hutchinson called on LAPD officials and the Police Commission to "conduct an intense review of department policies on the use of deadly force."

"This is a critical point in relations between the police and South L.A. residents given the rising incidences of deadly force in suspect and civilian encounters," Hutchinson said.

Police fatal shootings of black people in recent weeks have also sparked protests in El Cajon, California; Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Charlotte, North Carolina.

Pentagon paid PR firm $540mn to make fake terrorist videos

Edited time: 2 Oct, 2016 17:42

© Thaier Al-Sudani / Reuters

The Pentagon paid a UK PR firm half a billion dollars to create fake terrorist videos in Iraq in a secret propaganda campaign exposed by the Bureau of Investigative Journalism.

PR firm Bell Pottinger, known for its array of controversial clients including the Saudi government and Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet’s foundation, worked with the US military to create the propaganda in a secretive operation.

The firm reported to the CIA, the National Security Council and the Pentagon on the project with a mandate to portray Al-Qaeda in a negative light and track suspected sympathizers.

Both the White House and General David Petraeus, the former general who shared classified information with his mistress, signed off on the content produced by the agency.

The Bell Pottinger operation started soon after the US invasion of Iraq and was tasked with promoting the “democratic elections” for the administration before moving on to more lucrative psychological and information operations.

Former employee Martin Wells told the Bureau how he found himself working in Iraq after being hired as a video editor by Bell Pottinger. Within 48 hours, he was landing in Baghdad to edit content for secret “psychological operations” at Camp Victory.

The firm created television ads showing Al-Qaeda in a negative light as well as creating content to look as though it had come from “Arabic TV”. Crews were sent out to film bombings with low quality video. The firm would then edit it to make it look like news footage.

They would craft scripts for Arabic soap operas where characters would reject terrorism with happy consequences. The firm also created fake Al-Qaeda propaganda videos, which were then planted by the military in homes they raided.

Employees were given specific instructions to create the videos. “We need to make this style of video and we’ve got to use Al-Qaeda's footage,” Wells was told. “We need it to be 10 minutes long, and it needs to be in this file format, and we need to encode it in this manner.”

The videos were created to play on Real Player which needs an internet connection to run. The CDs were embedded with a code linking to Google Analytics which allowed the military to track IP addresses that the videos were played on.

According to Wells, the videos were picked up in Iran, Syria and the US.

"If one, 48 hours or a week later shows up in another part of the world, then that’s the more interesting one,” Wells explained.“And that’s what they’re looking for more, because that gives you a trail.”

The Pentagon confirmed the PR firm did work for them under the Information Operations Task Force (IOTF) creating content they say was “truthful”. The firm also worked under the Joint Psychological Operations Task Force (JPOTF). The Pentagon said it could not comment on JPOTF operations.

US law prohibits the government from using propaganda on its population, hence the use of an outside firm to create the content.

Documents show the Pentagon paid $540 million to Bell Pottinger in contracts between 2007 and 2011, with another contract for $120 million in 2006. The firm ended its work with the Pentagon in 2011.

In 2009, it was reported that the Pentagon had hired controversial PR firm, The Rendon Group, to monitor the reporting of journalists embedded with the U.S. military, to assess whether they were giving "positive" coverage to its missions.

It was also revealed in 2005 that Washington based PR company the Lincoln Group had been placing articles in newspapers in Iraq which were secretly written by the US military. A Pentagon investigation cleared the group of any wrongdoing.

Sex robot cafe aims to offer Londoners fellatio with their morning coffee

Edited time: 1 Oct, 2016 18:27

An entrepreneur who hopes to open London’s first ‘fellatio cafe’ has revealed his staff will be made up entirely of sex robots.

Businessman Bradley Charvet, who plans to open the ‘blow job cafe’ in Paddington, claims the sex-bots will be programmable to a person’s needs and will soon be seen as “totally normal.”

A 15-minute oral sex session with an espresso will set punters back just £60 (US$78). Hungry patrons will have to pay extra for a pastry.

The coffee shop is due to open after Charvet launches his first cafe in Geneva, Switzerland, later this year.

Charvet made headlines earlier this year when he announced he would launch a ‘fellatio cafe’ modeled on similar businesses in Thailand, such as Dr. BJ’s Salon in Bangkok.

However, the announcement was met with skepticism by many, who cited Britain’s stringent anti-prostitution laws as a reason why the business would be unlikely to take off.

Now Charvet claims the oral sex will be performed by ‘erotic cyborgs.’

Sex robots will always be pleasing and could even become better at technique because they would be programmable to a person’s need,” he told the Daily Star Online.

“They will improve the sex service. It’s totally normal to see a new way of using robots and others sex toys to have pleasure.”

Charvet believes the cafe will become a hub of social activity, where friends meet to chat, drink coffee and casually enjoy robotic sex acts.

The bar is the place to meet people, to extend your network and the way to start the morning.

What could be better than meet your friends around a cafe and to enjoy a nice blow job from a sex robot?

With opening hours of 6am to 11pm, blow job cafes could soon replace the pub as Britain’s favorite socializing spot.

Charvet believes a trip to the cafe is the best way to start the day.
Everyone is drinking coffee daily,” he said.

And nothing is better to start a working day than engaging in sexual action, US research has found.”

People like to chat before they make love. It makes sense the robots will speak and tease men’s desire,” he added.

The Paddington cafe will be home to eight robots dressed in a variety of costumes.

Uniforms are going to be worn: nurse, police, student and secretary.

If the London cafe is a success, Charvet plans to open a 24/7 shop in the heart of Manchester.
