The Battle for Mosul: 3 maps explaining the planned offensive against the Isis stronghold in Iraq

Iraqi army units will push towards Mosul from the south while the Kurds wait in the wings

As Islamic State (Isis) fortifies the outskirts of Mosul with oil-filled trenches, barricades and blast walls, the Iraqi army and Kurdish forces surrounding the city are preparing for a bloody battle to liberate Iraq's second biggest city from the jihadis. After two years of brutal IS rule in Mosul, Baghdad is poised to take the city back with intelligence sources confirming to IBTimes UK on Monday (26 September) that the troops would move in before early October.

Iraq's armed forces, fighting alongside Iranian-backed Shia militias and bolstered by US air strikes, have seized Tikrit and Ramadi from IS over the last 12 months and last week liberated the southern town of Shirqat. On Monday morning, the Iraqi army successfully responded an attack of IS fighters in the recently liberated area of Qayara, 80km south of Mosul. IS has gone on the counter-attack in al-Zawya, north of Baghdad, but are believed to have suffered heavy losses.

Iraq's Nineveh Governorate has been the focal point of the IS campaign in Iraq, and Mosul is its main centre of operation outside of Syria. With the Kurdish Peshmerga fighting in the north and east of the province, Mosul is now surrounded, with most of the connecting roads held by either Kurdish or Shia militia troops. This leaves IS with only one supply line, connecting the city to Tal Afar, 78km west of Mosul.

There has been much speculation about who will be involved in the battle to take back the city. The Kurds, who have proved integral to containing the jihadi group since 2014 in both Iraq and Syria, are unlikely to want to penetrate central Mosul, a Sunni Arab city with little connection to the Kurdish region. Likewise, it is not clear whether the Shia militias that have fought to take back Ramadi and Tikrit will be involved in taking back Mosul.

The US has committed $181m in humanitarian aid and is looking to add 500 more American troops to the 4,470 already in Iraq. Iraq army spokesperson, General Yehia Rasoul, has confirmed that the main military operation will be led by Iraqi forces and local allied fighters and that no foreign troops will be involved in front line operations.

But US and UK air strikes will likely play a major role in the operation. In the last days, eight Tornado and six Typhoon aircraft stationed at Cyprus RAF Akrotiri base have destroyed numerous IS targets in support of the Iraq troops.

Kurdish officials have also decided to limit their operation to the outskirts of the city. Sheikh Jafaar Mustafa, commander of the Peshmerga 70 forces said on Saturday that Kurdish troops will advance to re-take what they believe are "Kurdish lands".

The Kurdistan Democratic Party in Mosul has also announced on Sunday to have arrested seven senior leaders of the IS Shura Council of Abu Hammam al-Souri, who were trying to escape from the suburb south of Mosul in an attempt to reach IS-controlled Tal Afar and Syria.

Meanwhile, US military officials have revealed details of how the Islamic State is preparing its defensive line. Col. John Dorrian stated that the jihadist group has dug trenches and built walls around Mosul to secure strategic points and to slow down the advance of the Iraqi Army.

In recent weeks, IS troops have now moved their HQ and most of their arsenals into the main populated areas of the city, less likely to be bombed but where militants will probably fight more, increasing the risk of casualties among civilians. IS is also moving snipers and missile positions into the city centre as well as into the airport area and along the eastern border of the city.

Satellite images also reveal the presence of long canals filled with oil, with IS planning to start a fire when the offensive begins. Militants are also building several walls and blocks around the city centre and main streets of the city, with the intent of slowing down the offensive.

Police Shoot, Kill Man in San Diego Area; Protesters Gather

. EL CAJON, Calif. — Sep 28, 2016, 2:39 AM ET

WATCH Black Man Shot and Killed By Police in California, Sparking Protests

A black man reportedly acting erratically at a strip mall in suburban San Diego was shot and killed by police after pulling an object from his pocket, pointing it at officers and assuming a "shooting stance," authorities said.

One of the officers tried and failed to subdue the unidentified man with a stun gun before the other officer fired several times, El Cajon Police Chief Jeff Davis said at a late night news conference. Davis would not say what the object was, but acknowledged it was not a weapon.

Before police announced the death, dozens of protesters gathered at the shooting scene, with some claiming the man was shot with his hands raised. Police disputed that and produced a frame from cellphone video taken by a witness that appeared to show the man in the "shooting stance" as two officers approached with weapons drawn.

The fatal shooting comes just weeks after black men were shot and killed by police in Tulsa,Oklahoma, and in Charlotte, North Carolina, where violent protests broke out.

The El Cajon protest was angry but peaceful. Several dozen people, most of them black, gathered and some cursed at officers guarding the scene. They chanted "black lives matter!" and "hands up, don't shoot!"

Davis urged the community to remain calm and said the investigation will be thorough.

"This will be transparent," he said. "This will be looked at by multiple sets of eyes, and not just ours."

The district attorney was on scene and also will investigate.

Police said they were called to the mall shortly after 2 p.m. by the sister of a man in his 30s who said he was "not acting like himself" and walking in traffic. They say the man refused "multiple" orders to take his hand from his pocket, then was shot after pulling out the object.

When detectives arrived police say a female witness came forward and voluntarily provided cellphone video of the incident. Authorities did not release the video, only the single frame from it. El Cajon officers do not wear body cameras.

Meantime, other videos quickly surfaced showing the aftermath. In one posted to Facebook, an unidentified woman is heard telling police at the scene that the man was ordered to take his hand out of his pocket.

"I said: 'Take your hand out your pocket, baby, or they're going to shoot you.' He said 'no, no, no,' " the woman said. "When he lifted his hand out ... he did have something in his hand but it wasn't no gun, and that's when they shot him."

Another woman on the video who was wearing hospital-style work clothing said she's the man's sister. She appeared distraught, repeatedly shrieking and crying, telling officers that she had called them to help her brother, who she described as mentally ill.

"I just called for help, and you came and killed him," she said.

Michael Ray Rodriguez was among the witnesses who said the man had his hands in the air. He said that he was driving out of his apartment complex past the shooting scene and saw a shirtless black man with his hands raised.

The officer "let go of the trigger and shot him again and again," Rodriguez told the San Diego Union-Tribune.

El Cajon is about 15 miles northeast of San Diego and has a population of about 100,000. It is 69 percent white and 6 percent black, according to 2010 census figures, and has become a home for many refugees fleeing Iraq and, more recently, Syria.

Female Boko Haram victims in Nigerian camps forced to sell sex as food runs out

Boko Haram violence has left more than 65,000 people living in famine in the northeast, with one million others at risk

By Adaobi Tricia Nwaubani

ABUJA, Sept 27 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Tired of watching her five children go hungry in a camp for people fleeing Boko Haram in northeastern Nigeria, Amina Ali Pulka decided to befriend a young man who worked in the kitchen.

Desperate due to the lack of aid distributed at the Bakassi camp in the city of Maiduguri, the 30-year-old had sex with the man in exchange for extra food to give to her children.

"I did it because I had nobody to feed me or clothe me," Pulka told the Thomson Reuters Foundation by phone, adding that the man, who like her had been uprooted by Boko Haram violence, also gave her money which she used to buy soap and other items.

Pulka is one of many women in internally displaced persons (IDP) camps in northeast Nigeria who are selling sex in exchange for food, soap, and money, said medical charity International Medical Corps (IMC) and Nigerian research group NOI Polls.

Aid agencies have warned of starvation, malnutrition and dwindling food supplies for the displaced in Borno State.

"At times, the food is not enough so the women resort to giving themselves for food and money," said Hassana Pindar of the IMC, which runs support centres for women in the camps.

Boko Haram violence has left more than 65,000 people living in famine in the northeast, with one million others at risk, and more than half of children under five are malnourished in some areas of Borno state, a coalition of aid groups said last week.

The Islamist militant group has killed about 15,000 people and displaced more than 2 million in Nigeria in a seven-year insurgency aimed at creating a state adhering to Islamic laws.

A military offensive has driven Boko Haram from much of the territory it held in northern Nigeria, but the militants have continued to carry out suicide bombings and raids in northeast Nigeria and neighbouring Cameroon, Niger and Chad.

SEX FOR FOOD AND FREEDOM

Almost 90 percent of people uprooted by Boko Haram in northeast Nigeria do not have enough to eat, according to a survey last week by NOI Polls, which found that many women are trading sex for food and the freedom to move in and out of IDP camps.

The pollsters said that sexual abuse was a concern, and that the displaced accused camp officials of perpetrating it in two thirds of cases.

Hundreds of the displaced staged a protest last month in Maiduguri, accusing state officials of stealing food rations, prompting Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari to order police to arrest and make an example of the culprits.

In addition to mothers desperate to provide for their children, many teenage girls in Bakassi camp are sleeping with men in exchange for food, said IMC volunteer Fatima Alhaji.

"Some go out to beg on the streets, others go out of the camp to look for menial jobs, while others use their bodies to get food and money," she said. "Everybody is talking about it."

Five months pregnant, Pulka has been abandoned by the kitchen worker, while she has not seen her husband, who lives in the capital of Abuja with another of his wives, for three years.

Pulka said her husband, who has not visited the camp or sent any money, refused to come and take the children under his care.

Her oldest daughter, 15, is distraught about her pregnancy.

"She asks me why I am pregnant when their father has been away for three years ... other people in the camp also ask me questions," Pulka said. "I did it because of my children."

FEMA Announces Nationwide Emergency Alert System Test Planned For Today

fema

You probably heard about the rare black moon, and the Internet takeover coming to the end of September. Well, now it appears that FEMA has announced it is issuing a Nationwide Emergency Alerts System test today, Septemeber 28th. Here is an excerpt from the actual site:

As a reminder, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), in coordination with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), will conduct a mandatory nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) on Wednesday, September 28, at 2:20 p.m. EDT. In light of the upcoming test, the agencies share the following key informational points:

The purpose of the nationwide test is to ensure that EAS remains an effective means of warning the public about emergencies. Periodic testing of public alert and warning systems helps to assess the operational readiness of alerting infrastructure and identify any needed technological and administrative improvements.

The nationwide test will be administered by FEMA, in cooperation with the FCC and National Weather Service, and with the participation of radio, broadcast TV, cable, satellite, and other service providers (known as “EAS Participants”). EAS Participants are required to file reports with the FCC after the test, which the agency will analyze to determine how the test performed.

WND EXCLUSIVE

RISE OF SATANISM ANOTHER SIGN OF 'AMERICA'S FALL FROM GOD'

Christian leaders speak out against open blasphemy, devil worship

Published: 16 hours ago

Elementary schools forced by the government to allow
“Satan Clubs” on school grounds. Statues of Baphomet are erected in major American cities. And a national headquarters for the “Satanic Temple” inSalem, Massachusetts, famous for its “witch trials” during colonial times.

Has America gone to the devil? Christian leaders are speaking out – and they are reluctantly saying it has.

Karl Payne, pastor of leadership development at Antioch Bible Church and the former chaplain of the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks, said the rise of devil worship is an ominous development.

“Historian Arnold Toynbee famously declared countries crumble from within,” he said. “I believe we are nearing the end of that same course in our country that once represented a light of hope and freedom to the world.”

Payne, the author of “Spiritual Warfare: Christians, Demonization and Deliverance,” said America is no longer a Christian nation. And Christians need to wake up.

“For a country and people who have historically valued life more than death, truth more than deception and the rule of law and common sense more than tyranny or hedonism, the rise of Satanism probably comes as a shock,” counseled Payne. “But for those who have watched the promotion of occultism, spiritism, demonism and hedonism in the media in the name of ‘pluralism’ are not surprised. It is simply more evidence of our culture’s fascination with narcissism, death and rejection of common sense.”

Of course, the Satanic Temple says it does not literally worship the devil. Instead, Satan and demonic imagery are used as a “formidable weapon to fight for separation of church and state.”

However, Jonathan Cahn, the bestselling author of “The Harbinger” and the new blockbuster “The Book of Mysteries,” said the use of this kind of imagery is not innocent.

“It is yet another manifestation of America’s fall from God,” he told WND. “It is no accident that we are seeing more and more displays of Satan in America’s public life. This is an unprecedented development in American history. This could not have taken place in earlier days. And it’s no accident that this is happening in the same America that is increasingly removing any display concerning God or faith from the same public square.”

Rabbi Cahn argued no society can simply become “secular.” Instead, as a society declines, it calls what was once evil good and good evil. The result is nothing less than a total societal transformation.

“It is another sign of the increasingly powerful position and brazen stance of evil, immorality, ungodliness and anti-Christianity in the new America,” Cahn thundered. “That which in former days existed only in the shadows and in the periphery of American culture is now in the spotlight and center stage – and seeks to drive that which was formerly in the spotlight and center stage of American culture to the periphery and into the shadows.”

And Cahn warns it won’t stop there.

“In the judgment template of ‘The Harbinger,’ when ancient Israel turned away from God, it turned to the god Baal. One of the names of Baal was ‘Baal Zevuv,’ or ‘Lord of the Flies.’ When that Hebrew name was translated into Greek and then English, it became ‘Beelzebub’ – the name of Satan. So it is no accident that we are now seeing in America the same thing. When one drives God out of one’s life, when a nation drives God out of its national life – it opens the door to the devil.”

Carl Gallups, a pastor and author of the new book “When the Lion Roars: Understanding the Implications of Ancient Prophecies for Our Time,” long has warned Christians are going to be “targeted” for persecution. And he noted acidly the Satanic Temple is targeting school districts that host Christian after-school programs.

Gallups says there is a link between the increasing secularism of American culture and the rise of demonic activity.

“As the culture of the United States, the largest Christian nation the planet has ever known, becomes increasingly secular, and as much of America’s church slips progressively into apostasy, the intensity of demonic activity will only increase,” said Gallups. “This is not only a biblical prediction, but also a current reality that, with growing frequency, is reported upon practically every week.”

According to exorcists, there is unprecedented demand for services in expelling demons. Pastor Gallups argues this reported increase in demonic activity and the growing acceptance of Satanic imagery is nothing less than a sign of the last days.

“There can be no doubt that the Word of God speaks of a demonic outpouring occurring in the days just before the return of the Lord,” he said. “The implication of those prophecies is that the deluge will be on a global scale. Although we have always had the influence and impact of the demonic realm to deal with, never before has that sphere of existence had such a platform from which to manifest itself and to so boldly proclaim its seductive message. The intense focus given to this ‘Satanic Temple’ is just another example.

“But even this group is just a symptom and a sign. The problem is that man’s sinful nature is running amok, and this is now being celebrated. The world continually acquiesces to the growing evil and abject mockery of God’s Word that now surrounds it.”

Besides serving as a pastor and chaplain, Payne is also an experienced exorcist who has personally helped believers suffering from demonic attack. He also stated the growing acceptance of demonic symbolism is a dangerous sign for the future.

“These events have end times significance,” he told WND. “This world is ripe for the acceptance and ascension of a Satanically inspired global leader who will promise peace and freedom while he systematically eliminates all who disagree with him. A temple honoring Satan is just one more step towards that end.”
