The report, entitled “Egypt: ‘Officially, you do not exist’: Disappeared and tortured in the name of counter-terrorism”, shines a light on alleged human rights abuses by the regime of Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, a key security partner for many Western countries in the region, particularly the U.S. More than 1,000 people are believed to have been killed at the hands of Egyptian security forces and tens of thousands imprisoned since Sisi overthrew Muslim Brotherhood leader Mohamed Morsi, the country's first democratically elected leader, in July 2013. But the Egyptian government denies allegations of forced disappearances, torture and mistreatment. The allegations of forced disappearances are not solely limited to Egyptians either. Earlier this year, the body of Italian postgraduate student Giulio Regeni was discovered by a roadside on the outskirts of Cairo with signs of torture on his body after going missing for days. Italian officials pointed the finger at the Egyptian security services but the government defended its forces, saying his murder was committed by criminals. “This report reveals the shocking and ruthless tactics that the Egyptian authorities are prepared to employ in their efforts to terrify protesters and dissidents into silence,” said Philip Luther, director of the Middle East and North Africa Programme at Amnesty International. “Enforced disappearance has become a key instrument of state policy in Egypt. Anyone who dares to speak out is at risk, with counter-terrorism being used as an excuse to abduct, interrogate and torture people who challenge the authorities," he continued. He said that while Egyptian authorities have denied the use of forced disappearances, there is high-level collusion between the forces and the Egyptian judiciary, who "have been prepared to lie to cover their tracks or failed to investigate torture allegations, making them complicit in serious human rights violations." In one case, Amnesty alleges that Mazen Mohamed Abdallah, arrested at the age of 14 in September 2015 for support of the Muslim Brotherhood, suffered abuse including being repeatedly raped with a wooden stick in order to extract a false “confession,” Amnesty says in the report. In another case detailed in the report, Egyptian security forces are said to have detained Aser Mohamed at the age of 14 for 34 days in January 2016 at Egypt's National Security Agency offices in Greater Cairo. Amnesty says they beat him, gave him electric shocks on different areas of his body and suspended him from his limbs in order to extract a false confession. A state security prosecutor then threatened him with more electric shocks after he attempted to retract his "confessions." (Newsweek)

By Hannah Osborne July 12, 2016 16:54 BST Arial view over the Phlegraean FieldsRetaggio The ground around one of the world's most dangerous volcanic systems has been moving upwards over the last decade, raising 38cm in the last 10 years. The movement at Italy's Campi Flegrei – or, as it's also known, the Phlegraean Fields – has raised concerns of an impending eruption, but scientists have now said this is not necessarily the case. Campi Flegrei, an enormous volcanic area, sits across the Bay of Naples from Mount Vesuvius. The caldera includes 24 craters and volcanic networks and is mostly situated underwater. It gained widespread attention in 2009 after scientists suggested inflation at the site could signal a forthcoming eruption. "These results suggest that a future eruptive crisis will likely be preceded by several meters of caldera-wide uplift in response to magma movements at depth," it said. "The trend of uplift of the caldera since 1969 may thus represent the unrest expected before a renewal of volcanism within an interval of decades to centuries." Around 40,000 years ago, the Campi Flegrei produced a "super-colossal" eruption – the second highest on the volcanic explosivity index, proceeded only by an "apocalyptic" eruption like that seen at Yellowstone supervolcano in the US. The last time it produced an eruption was 1538, but this was a fairly small one. The last time it moved was the 1980s, when it rose by 1.8m. Inside Solfatara volcanic crater of Campi FlegreiJohn McLinden While this last period of movement was thought to be the result of hydrothermal activity, the latest shift is believed to have been caused by the accumulation and movement of molten magma beneath the Campi Flegrei. However, scientists at the Second University of Naples and the Vesuvius Observatory say this is wrong. Presenting their research at the Goldschmidt conference in Yokohama, Japan, lead researcher Roberto Moretti said: "Everyone accepts the geochemical evidence that current activity has different causes to that of 1982-84. Most geochemists are now showing that the 1982-84 movement was caused by hydrothermal activity and the current activity is caused by magma, but we think that it's exactly the other way round. "We have checked geochemical records going back over more than 30 years, and our ongoing interpretation – looking at released gases and physical signals – seem to be consistent with current activity being hydrothermal, with the support of deep magmatic gases, rather than due to magma migration or growth of a shallow (3-4 km deep) magma chamber. We believe that this magma dynamics characterised the 1982-84 episode." Instead, he said their findings show how difficult it is to get a full understanding of volcanic areas, despite being one of the most studied in the world. To get a better picture of the inner-workings, scientists would need direct access to the subsurface areas of interest. To do this, they would need to drill into it – a plan that could also lead to further instability. "Our results have important implications on the short term risk in the area and the monitoring of hydrothermal pressure build-up," the team concluded. Commenting on the presentation, John Blundy, from the University of Bristol, said: "Interpreting the causes of ground movement at restless volcanoes is an enduring problem for volcanologists. Both hot gases [steam] and magma are candidate causes, but with quite different implications for future eruptive activity. Moretti and others make a compelling case for gas, rather than magma, as the cause of the latest [ground movement] at Campi Flegrei. Last October, China said it was “not frightened” to fight a war with the U.S. following an incident where the guided-missile destroyer USS Lassen violated the 12-nautical mile zone China claims around Subi and Mischief reefs in the Spratly archipelago. China’s Navy has repeatedly issued warnings to U.S. surveillance planes flying over the region. Experts have warned that an accidental collision between aircraft, similar to a 2001 incident which led to an international controversy, could spark a deadly conflict. According to Michael Auslin, a war between the two superpowers is more likely than at any point in the last 20 years. 	Russian Armageddon Convoy Practices for World War III If this were to happen for real—well, hope you have a fallout shelter nearby. By Kyle Mizokami Jul 12, 2016 The largest country in the world by area, Russia has plenty of room to hide things. Naturally, that includes nuclear missiles. Unlike American missiles, which are stationed in concrete silos, Russian intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) are deployed on large truck-like vehicles designed to prowl the country's road networks before unleashing Armageddon. Russia Today has a story on a Russian strategic missile exercise that involves a massive convoy traveling from European-Russian border all the way to the Mongolian border. Russian mobile ICBMs have established, permanent bases but leave in groups on month-long patrols. This particular 400-vehicle convoy includes Topol, Topol-M, and Yars mobile missiles, as well as command and control, security, and logistics vehicles. Topol and Yars missiles are capable of delivering one to four nuclear warheads within roughly a thousand feet of their target, making them accurate enough to destroy American missiles in their silos. This makes them a formidable first-strike weapon capable of wiping out a significant part of the US nuclear arsenal, if the Russians were so inclined. The giant vehicles are TELs, or transporter-erector-launchers, specialized vehicles designed to give a heavy missile a smooth ride over rough roads. TELs not only store the missile but can launch it in the field. The launch tubes can be reloaded back at base (assuming, of course, there is a base to return to). The smaller vehicles are logistic, communications, and command and control vehicles. Mobile ICBMs are vulnerable to ground attack, particularly enemy special forces who may attempt to destroy the missiles before they are launched. The convoy relies upon a Taifun-Marmored reconnaissance vehicle to detect ambushes on the ground. Taifun-M bristles with sensors, including forward-looking infra-red, radar, and traditional optics, and can allegedly detect enemy troops at 3 kilometers. Also part of the convoy is a tracked robotic vehicle equipped with a machine gun. The unmanned vehicle can more quickly close with an enemy threat and eliminate it before the enemy can shoot at the giant, highly flammable rockets with nuclear warheads strapped to them.We've said it before, and we'll say it again: these mobile ICBMs are terrifying.
