Chunks of Earth's Mantle Are 'Peeling Off'

May 11, 2016

Scientists suspect that chunks from the bottom of the North American tectonic plate, which is the upper portion of the mantle, are peeling off and sinking. Replacing the resulting void is gooey material from the asthenosphere.

An odd phenomenon may explain why the Southeastern United States has experienced recent earthquakes, even though the region sits snugly in the middle of a tectonic plate and not at the edges, where all the ground-shaking action usually happens.

This seismicity — or relatively frequent earthquakes — may be the result of areas along the bottom of the North American tectonic plate peeling off, the researchers said. And this peeling motion is likely to continue, leading to more earthquakes in the future, likethe 2011 magnitude-5.8 temblor that shook the nation's capital. [Image Gallery: This Millennium's Destructive Earthquakes]

To figure out the cause of these earthquakes, Berk Biryol, a seismologist at UNC Chapel Hill, and colleagues created 3D images of the uppermost part of Earth's mantle, which is just below the crust and comprises the bottom of a tectonic plate. These tectonic plates scoot around atop a layer of warm, viscous fluid called the asthenosphere.

The resulting X-ray images revealed that the plate's thickness in the southeast United States was uneven, with thick regions of dense, old rock combined with thinner areas composed of younger rocks that were also less dense.

Here's what the researchers think caused the wonkiness: Over time, as new material was added to the plate and parts of the plate were pulled apart, areas of higher density formed. Gravity would have pulled down the denser areas into the mantle, and at some point chunks would have broken off to sink into the gooey asthenosphere below, the researchers speculated.

At the same time, to fill the void left by the chunks peeling off from the bottom of the plate, the lighter material in the asthenosphere would have moved up to fill in the space. That buoyant material then would have cooled to become the thinner, younger section of the plate.

Where parts of the plate broke off or peeled, it became thinner and more prone to slip along fault lines, thus causing seismic activity. Biryol estimates that this activity has occurred for the past 65 million years or so.

"These events, usually, when they occur, they occur over long periods of time. The geological time scale is millions of years," Biryol said.

While the research looks only at what has occurred in the past, and not what seismic activity there may be in the future, Biryol said people living in the Southeast don't need earthquake preparedness kits just yet.

"I don't think things will be changing in the future, at least not in our lifetimes or our grandchildren's grandchildren's life," Biryol told Live Science. "Geological processes take place over long periods of time and nothing will change dramatically overnight."

Dozens of terrorism suspects among refugees who entered Germany

May 11, 2016

BERLIN (Reuters) - German authorities are investigating 40 cases in which Islamic militants are suspected of having entered the country with the recent flood of refugees from the Middle East, the federal police said on Wednesday.

That represents a doubling of such cases since January and is likely to deepen concerns about the threat level in Germany, which has not suffered a large-scale Islamist attack like those that have rocked neighbours France and Belgium in recent months.

In the past, the German government has played down the risks of Islamic State fighters entering Europe with the tide of migrants, in part to avoid exacerbating public concerns about the influx, which hit a record 1.1 million last year.

But the head of Germany's domestic intelligence agency Hans-Georg Maassen told a conference last week that although there were more efficient ways to smuggle in fighters, Islamic State appeared to have sent some via the Balkan route from Greece in order to fan fears about refugees and "send a political signal".

"I am not telling you a secret when I say that I am concerned about the high number of migrants whose identities we don't know because they had no papers when they entered the country," Maassen said.

PARIS ATTACKS

The number of migrants entering Germany reached peaks of more than 10,000 a day last autumn, but has fallen dramatically in recent months due to the closing of the Greek border with Macedonia and a deal between the European Union and Turkey that has discouraged refugees from crossing the Aegean Sea.

The reduction in the numbers has eased pressure on German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who came under fierce criticism last year for welcoming hundreds of thousands of migrants fleeing war in the Middle East with the optimistic slogan "We can do this".

A spokeswoman for the Bundeskriminalamt (BKA), or federal police, said there had been 369 warnings about possible extremists entering the country since the influx of refugees accelerated last year, of which 40 merited further investigation by federal and state authorities.

That represents a sharp increase from the 213 warnings and 18 investigations that the police had recorded in early January.

"German security officials have indications that members and supporters of terrorist organisations are being smuggled in with refugees in a targeted, organised way in order to launch attacks in Germany," the BKA spokeswoman said, noting however that there was no definitive confirmation of this.

Two of the suicide bombers from the Nov. 13 attacks in Paris that killed 130 people came into Europe through the Balkan route and so did two men who authorities believe were meant to participate in those attacks but were delayed and arrested in a refugee centre in Salzburg in December.

There is also evidence that Saleh Abdeslam, believed to be the lone surviving suspect from the attacks, picked up three unidentified militants who entered Europe with the refugees in the southern German city of Ulm in October of last year.

In early February, German authorities arrested a 35-year-old Algerian man and his wife at a refugee centre in the town of Attendorn. The man, a suspected Islamic State member, reportedly posed as a Syrian when he entered Germany in the autumn of 2015.

Days later, a 32-year-old man was arrested in the city of Mainz who is suspected of having fought with the militant group in eastern Syria before travelling to Germany via Turkey.

Quarter of 'straight' young women admit to having a same-sex fling while HALF believe gender isn't 'fixed' - thanks to celebrities being open about their experiences

    • · A third of 18-24-year-olds have been attracted to the same sex
    • · Study quizzed 2,000 women on their views on gender
    • · Also found one in five described themselves as 'gender fluid'

More 'straight' young women are having gay sexual experiences and fewer believe that their gender is something that is fixed, according to new research.

A quarter of 18 to 24-year-old women admit to having a fling with someone of the same sex, and a third confess they have been attracted to someone outside of their defined sexuality.

Only a third of the age bracket - described as The Pioneers, 'the new generation of sexual fluidity' - think marriage is relevant to their lives, and 45 per cent would consider having a baby without a partner.

Two thousand women were questioned on their views on gender by Grazia magazine and Onepoll, with the results indicating that negative experiences such as feeling disadvantaged at work have led to many rejecting the traditional ideas of womanhood.

The idea of gender fluidity has also been more discussed thanks to high-profile transwomen such as Caitlyn Jenner and actress Laverne Cox, the study found.

And celebrities such as Miley Cyrus speaking about their own bisexual experiences are encouraging young women to feel open to encounters with the same sex.

Of the next age bracket, the 25 to 34-year-olds, more than one in 10 women admitted they would avoid choosing pink for their daughters, and a quarter believe their gender has held them back in their career.

The majority of this group - referred to as The Teachers - are married or living with their partners, and say they are determined their children will be raised in a different world, with aspects of gender neutrality.

The mothers say they would give their child both 'male' and 'female' toys, and read them 'non-stereotypical' stories.

Although seven out of ten women admits that they still do more household chores than their partners.

WHAT THE SURVEY REVEALED

15% of Pioneers have bought an item of clothing from a gender-neutral fashion range, as have 15% of Teachers and 11% of Explorers

68% of Pioneers think makeup is not just for women, compared with 54% of Teachers and 47% of Explorers

16% of Pioneers describe their style of dressing as gender neutral, compared with 14% of Teachers and 16% of Explorers

54% of pioneers think that gender is a spectrum, compared with 45% of Teachers and 44% of Explorers

23% of Pioneers have had a sexual experience with someone outside of their defined sexuality, compared with 20% of Teachers and 12% of Explorers.

31% of Pioneers would describe themselves as sexually experimental, compared with 28% of Teachers and 19% of Explorers

The third group - the Explorers - aged 35-44 said they felt society was more accepting of gender fluidity than it was a decade ago.

One in five admit to being sexuality experimental - with a quarter saying they'd like to be more so.

Two thirds believe they are more open-minded on gender issues than their parents, and a quarter have bought an item of menswear for themselves.

While eight out of ten say they dress for themselves rather than for men.

Grazia said the Pioneers have grown up during the re-emergence of feminism and the legalisation of gay marriage, and are rejecting the narrow definitions that previous generations have lived by.

Dr Thom O’Neill, who works in Scotland and runs a YouTube channel speaking about sex, mental health and LGBT issues, said the survey showed promising results for the future.

He said: ‘Anything that suggests we are moving away from traditional societal views to become more accepting of a range of gender and sexual identities is very encouraging.

'The effects of homophobia and intolerance to gender variance can be very damaging, especially to young people. For example, the levels of mental health issues in young LGBT+ people are high, and the environment in which individuals live their day-to-day lives plays a big part in this.

'Shifting societal attitudes will help young people to live happier and healthier lives.’

ISIS burns family with children alive for trying to flee terrorist-occupied land

Published time: 12 May, 2016 11:46

Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) fighters have reportedly burned alive an entire family, including children, in public for trying to escape a terrorist-held area in northern Iraq, local media said.

“ISIS burned a family of five people, including three children, in central al-Riyad [district of the oil-rich city of Kirkuk],” a security source told the Iraqi News website on condition of anonymity.

The source said the militants “poured oil on the family members and burned them in public.”

The family was executed because they were trying to leave IS-occupied land, he added.

The execution was also confirmed to the Kurdish ARA News agency by media activist Yilmaz Mahmoud. However, he said there were two children, not three.

“ISIS has brutally committed this crime in order to terrorize the remaining civilians living in the region,” he said, “These barbaric men have engaged in the most heinous crimes in Syria and Iraq in plain view of the international community.”

Burning an entire family alive is one of numerous atrocities committed by IS militants, who control larges parts of Iraq and Syria. The terrorists also use such barbaric methods of execution as decapitation with explosives and drowning victims in a cage.

The group, formerly an affiliate of Al-Qaeda before they split from the jihadist movement in February 2014, has frequently staged mass executions of their enemies and the civilian population.

Jihadists’ websites have repeatedly released videos, apparently showing dozens and even hundreds of prisoners being executed by the extremists.

‘London – the favourite second home of int’l criminals’

John Wight
John Wight has written for newspapers and websites across the world, including the Independent, Morning Star, Huffington Post, Counterpunch, London Progressive Journal, and Foreign Policy Journal. He is also a regular commentator on RT and BBC Radio. He wrote a memoir of the five years he spent in Hollywood, where he worked in the movie industry prior to becoming a full time activist and organizer with the US antiwar movement post-9/11. The book is titled Dreams That Die and is published by Zero Books. John is currently working on a book exploring the role of the West in the Arab Spring. You can follow him on Twitter @JohnWight1

The UK is the place to go for assorted international criminals who take money and resources from countries such as Nigeria and Afghanistan, with the City of London benefiting from this huge influx of wealth, says John Wight, writer and political commentator.

Delegates from all across the world have arrived in Britain for a major anti-corruption summit in London. But the event has already been marred by remarks – not supposed to reach the public’s ears – made by UK Prime Minister Cameron earlier this week in his conversation with the Queen and Speaker of the House John Bercow. Cameron was accidently caught on camera saying that Nigeria and Afghanistan are “fantastically corrupt.”

RT: David Cameron has voiced these comments even before the summit started. Do you think that might have an impact on the conference?

John Wight: I don’t think that will have an impact on the conference itself, but it will certainly have an impact on people’s perceptions and understanding of the nature of global power. What we have been treated to with these unguarded, indiscreet comments is a rare insight into the mindset of a British ruling class that remains in the 19th century with regard to its disrespect towards countries such as Nigeria, China and Afghanistan. These people treat these countries as if they are of lower culture, as if they are unfit to rule themselves. And I am sure they would much prefer… if they were still ruled directly by Britain. So this is a very, very rare insight into a mindset of a ruling class which has been responsible for much of the corruption in places such as Nigeria and Afghanistan through its history of colonialism.

RT: Apparently the prime minister didn't want these comments to be heard. Is it a blow to his reputation?

JW: I don’t think David Cameron’s reputation could get any lower than it already is. We’ve already had the revelations surrounding the Panama Papers with his father and family connected to the huge corruption that was revealed in those. We’ve already had the role of his government in whipping up a frenzy of anti-Semitic charges against Labour Party members and politicians and so forth. So I think the general public knows the history of the Tories and David Cameron is only the latest in the long line of discredited, dishonorable Tory prime ministers.

RT: The president of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, rebuffed the accusations and in fact said his country's assets had been stolen by officials who fled to London. What would you make of those allegations?

JW: Mr. Buhari’s comments are entirely accurate. Britain, and London in particular, has become the favorite second home of assorted international criminals, whether they are taking money and resources of Russia, post the collapse of the Soviet Union, or of Nigeria, or other countries in the global south. London is the go-to place. The City of London has benefited from this huge influx of wealth, which it has then re-invested and through its greed come close to crushing the world economy, or played a key role in that regard in 2008. What we’re seeing is an excess of corruption that starts in London and ends in London.

The history of colonialism and its role today as a second home of international criminals from places such as Nigeria and Afghanistan... This is the truth of the matter. And every single statue in the center of London – Downing Street, Westminster, everywhere you go – all these statues and monuments are monuments to a history of colonialism, raping, devastation, and super-exploitation of countries such as Nigeria. When we talk about foreign aid – that is an insult to countries such as Nigeria. We should be talking about reparation for those countries, for that history of colonialism, which has done so much to keep these countries mired in underdevelopment.
