Boko Haram abductions: Freed 'bride' tells of stigma ordeal

Zara John: "They gave us a choice to be married or to be a slave - I decided to marry"

Zara is 17 years old and she has a terrible story. It is the story of Boko Haram and what this brutal Islamist group is doing to thousands of people in north-eastern Nigeria and surrounding countries.

Zara was kidnapped by Boko Haram and then freed by the army, but now finds herself sometimes wishing she was back in the forest rather than suffering the stigma of life as a Boko Haram bride.

She wasn't one of the missing Chibok schoolgirls, and until now didn't have her own social media hashtag, but like thousands of others - free or still captive - is deeply traumatised.

In telling #ZarasStory it's the first time she has spoken to outsiders about her terrible experience a year on, and the pain she still suffers to this day.

"They gave us a choice - to be married, or to be a slave. I decided to marry," she said.

There is little difference, but for the child she was soon bearing.

Zara says she has become an outcast in her community

Life was tough and dangerous. The air force jets bombarded the vast Sambisa Forest where the militants have their camps and from where soldiers rescued her and eventually returned her to her relatives.

"The women in our family realised she was three months pregnant," said her uncle Mohamed Umaru, who told us more of her story.

"In our family it happens that some of us are Christians and some are Muslims. She was a Christian before she was kidnapped but the Boko Haram who married her turned her into a Muslim."

There was a split in the family over what to do and they took a vote as to whether she should abort or keep the child.

The majority prevailed and she gave birth to a boy.

"She said her husband's father is called Usman, so that is how she named the child," Mohamed said.

And then the insults began.

"People call me a Boko Haram wife and called me a criminal. They didn't want me near. They didn't like me," Zara said as a tear slowly slipped down her cheek.

Zara says she prefers the forest to her home

She now sits inside the small walled compound around her house, afraid to go outside because of the cruel insults of the neighbourhood children - messages of hate learned from their parents.

"They didn't like my child. When he fell sick nobody would look after him," she said.

Last weekend, as Zara slept outside with Usman because of the heat, a snake got into their compound and the boy was killed. He was just nine months old.

Half the family celebrated what they called God's will.

"Some were happy that he died," Zara said. "They were happy the blood of Boko Haram had gone from the family."

Zara says she is afraid to go outside because of the insults

"They said thank God that the kid is dead, that God has answered their prayers," Mohamed explained.

"Sometimes she says she wants to go to school and become a doctor and help society, but sometimes, when people insult her, she says she wants to go back to the Sambisa Forest.

"She always talks about her husband who happens to be a Boko Haram commander. She says the guy is nice to her and that he wants to start a new life with her."

Listening to Zara's story, told quietly with eyes flicking down at the ground, it is hard to imagine anyone going through what she has gone though, let alone a 17-year-old girl.

Mohamed said Zara's life had become so intolerably hard that on one occasion she had said she wanted to "go and do a suicide mission".

"She will, she will, she will definitely do that if she gets the chance," he added.

Abandoned

But there is so much confusion in her face and in her answers - she is not a killer, she is just a child.

"The feeling for the forest is strong now, but it will go away. I will forget the time with Boko Haram, but not yet," Zara said.

She says she is in love with her husband although she believes she has been brainwashed. She feels abandoned by her family and stigmatised by her community.

She is sad, she is angry, she is confused. She is 17.

"People should understand that these children didn't create this, but if we continue to stigmatise people with such trauma we might create something much, much bigger than Boko Haram in the future," her uncle says.

"You are creating a more dangerous thing than Boko Haram if you grow up not welcomed by society and with nobody wanting to help you.

"My prayer is for the government to do something. They should come to their aid and reintegrate them and show them love."

So many girls like Zara have been abducted, so many others are still being held.

There is torment for those who wait and hope, and there is pain for those who survive.

A Senator Just Went on 60 Minutes Claiming the 9/11 Attackers Had “Support from Within the US”

Democratic Congressman Stephen Lynch

Underneath the visitors’ center in the United States Capitol is a secure room where the House Intelligence Committee stores highly classified files. In that room is a file titled “Finding, Discussion and Narrative Regarding Certain Sensitive National Security Matters.” It is twenty-eight pages long and it contains apparently damning information on the events leading up to the attacks on 9/11.

“Those twenty-eight pages tell a story that has been completely removed from the 9/11 Report,” said Democratic Congressman Stephen Lynch back in 2014.
It has been well-known by informed Americans that Lynch, read the “stunning” documents, and claimed they “offer[ed] direct evidence of complicity on the part of certain Saudi individuals and entities.”

However, the 28-pages have been conveniently avoided by those in the mainstream media — until now.

On Sunday night’s episode of 60-Minutes, former Florida governor, Democratic U.S. Senator and onetime chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, Bob Graham will implicate the US ally on national television.

On Saturday, CBS News released a trailer for the episode and an accompanying article.

“I think it’s implausible to believe that 19 people, most of whom didn’t speak English, most of whom had never been in the United States before, many didn’t have a high school education, could have carried out such a complicated task without some support from within the United States,” says Graham in the clip.

Until now, anyone who questioned the highly suspect ‘official’ narrative on the 9/11 attacks has been labeled a conspiracy theorist or a kook. But when current and former members of Congress, U.S. officials, and the 9/11 Commissioners themselves call for the release of these 28-pages, which tells a different story of what happened that fateful day — people will listen.

CBS reports, Graham and his Joint Inquiry co-chair in the House, former Representative Porter Goss (R-FL) — who went on to be director of the CIA — say the 28 pages were excised from their report by the Bush Administration in the interest of national security. Graham wouldn’t discuss the classified contents, but says the 28 pages outline a network of people he believes supported hijackers in the U.S. He tells Steve Kroft he believes the hijackers were “substantially” supported by Saudi Arabia. Asked if the support was from government, rich people or charities, the former senator replies, “all of the above.”

This information being aired on mainstream television is nothing short of historical and is a bombshell to those seeking the truth. For over a decade, the families of the victims have demanded the full story on what happened and have only been met with ridicule and closed doors.

Even the 911 commission was railroaded. Not only were the commissioners given extremely limited funds to conduct their investigation, but they were also met with dead ends in almost every direction.

For starters, only $15 million was given to investigate 9/11. Compare that to the over $60 million that was spent investigating Clinton’s affairs with Monica and the travesty becomes greater. This was the largest act of murder in recent US history, and more money was spent investigating a philandering president!

Also, Senator Max Cleland, who resigned from the 9/11 Commission after calling it a “national scandal,” stated in a 2003 PBS interview,

“I’m saying that’s deliberate. I am saying that the delay in relating this information to the American public out of a hearing… series of hearings, that several members of Congress knew eight or ten months ago, including Bob Graham and others, that was deliberately slow walked… the 9/11 Commission was deliberately slow walked, because the Administration’s policy was, and its priority was, we’re gonna take Saddam Hussein out.”

In 2006, the Washington Post reported that several members of the 9/11 Commission suspected deception on the part of the Pentagon. As reported,
“Some staff members and commissioners of the Sept. 11 panel concluded that the Pentagon’s initial story of how it reacted to the 2001 terrorist attacks may have been part of a deliberate effort to mislead the commission and the public rather than a reflection of the fog of events on that day, according to sources involved in the debate.”

Whether they took part in the attacks or not, the actions of Dick Cheney and George W. Bush after the attacks were nothing short of criminally suspicious as well.

Bush and his then VP Cheney told the commission that they would not be formally interviewed in relation to the attacks on September 11.

On April 27, 2004 the White House released a statement saying there would be no recording or formal transcription of the interview. The duo also demanded to be interviewed together, against the wishes of the commissioners and government protocol.

According to the New York Times,

Under a pact with the White House that allowed all its 10 members in the interview, the commission is permitted to take a note taker, but not a recording device. The panel said it did not press for a formal transcription of the session, letting the White House decide.

Five giant banks failed to fulfill a crucial regulatory requirement that Congress introduced after the 2008 financial crisis to help make large financial institutions less of a threat to the wider economy, federal banking regulators said on Wednesday.

Congress demanded that big banks regularly provide regulators with careful plans, also known as living wills, for how they would enter bankruptcy in an orderly fashion.

Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) issued a Press Release at 8:00 AM EDT yesterday, 13 April which laid out the trouble.

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and the Federal Reserve Board on Wednesday jointly announced determinations and provided firm-specific feedback on the 2015 resolution plans of eight systemically important, domestic banking institutions.

The agencies jointly determined that each of the 2015 resolution plans of:

Bank of America

Bank of New York Mellon

JP Morgan Chase

State Street,

Wells Fargo

were not credible or would not facilitate an orderly resolution under the U.S. Bankruptcy Code, the statutory standard established in the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act. The agencies have issued joint notices of deficiencies to these five firms detailing the deficiencies in their plans and the actions the firms must take to address them. Each firm must remediate its deficiencies by October 1, 2016. If a firm has not done so, it may be subject to more stringent prudential requirements.

The agencies jointly identified weaknesses in the 2015 resolution plans of

Goldman Sachs

and

Morgan Stanley

that the firms must address, but did not make joint determinations regarding the plans and their deficiencies. The FDIC determined that the plan submitted by Goldman Sachs was not credible or would not facilitate an orderly resolution under the U.S. Bankruptcy Code, and identified deficiencies. The Federal Reserve Board identified a deficiency in Morgan Stanley's plan and found that the plan was not credible or would not facilitate an orderly resolution under the U.S. Bankruptcy Code.

Neither agency found that Citigroup's 2015 resolution plan was not credible or would not facilitate an orderly resolution under the U.S. Bankruptcy Code, although the agencies did identify shortcomings that the firm must address.

The deadline for the next full plan submission for all eight domestic, systemically important financial institutions is July 1, 2017. The agencies will evaluate all eight of the full plans submitted in 2017 under the statutory standard.

The agencies are issuing Resolution Plan Assessment Framework and Firm Determinations (2016), which explains the resolution planning requirement, and provides further information on the determinations and the agencies' processes for reviewing the plans. Further, the Federal Reserve Board is releasing the feedback letters issued to each firm. Each letter details the deficiencies and shortcomings of each firm's plan, as well as the specific remediation required of each firm. Additionally, the agencies are releasing new guidance for the July 2017 submission of all firms.

Section 165(d) of the Dodd-Frank Act requires bank holding companies with total consolidated assets of $50 billion or more and nonbank financial companies designated by the Financial Stability Oversight Council (FSOC) for supervision by the Federal Reserve periodically submit resolution plans to the Federal Reserve and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. Each plan, commonly known as a living will, must describe the company's strategy for rapid and orderly resolution under bankruptcy in the event of material financial distress or failure of the company.

Under the authority granted to the agencies in Section 165(d), if any of the five firms receiving a joint notice of deficiencies does not adequately remediate those deficiencies by October 1, the agencies, acting jointly, may impose more stringent prudential requirements on the firm until it remediates them. The prudential requirements may include more stringent capital, leverage, or liquidity requirements, as well as restrictions on growth, activities, or operations of the firm, or its subsidiaries. If, following a two-year period beginning on the date of the imposition of such requirements, a firm still has failed to adequately remediate any deficiencies, the agencies, in consultation with the FSOC, may jointly require the firm to divest certain assets or operations to facilitate an orderly resolution of the firm in bankruptcy.

The agencies also announced that they are continuing to assess the plans for the four foreign banking organizations that filed resolution plans on July 1, 2015--Barclays PLC, Credit Suisse Group, Deutsche Bank AG, and UBS.

The decisions announced on Wednesday received unanimous support, respectively, from the FDIC and Federal Reserve boards.

Also on Wednesday, JPMorgan announced a decline in both profit and revenue for the first quarter. Other large banks will report quarterly results this week.

“Obviously we were disappointed,” Marianne Lake, chief financial officer of JPMorgan, said on Wednesday morning.

The results are a particular blow for JPMorgan because it often boasts about the strength of its operations and its ability to weather any crisis. Just last week, Jamie Dimon, the chief executive, bragged in his annual letter that the bank “had enough loss-absorbing resources to bear all the losses,” under the Fed’s annual stress-test situations, of the 31 largest banks in the country.

But the Fed and F.D.I.C. said on Wednesday that JPMorgan appeared to be unprepared for a crisis in a number of areas. The regulators said, for instance, that the bank did not have adequate plans to move money from its operations overseas if something went wrong in the markets.

The letter also said that JPMorgan did not have a good plan to wind down its outstanding derivative contracts if other banks stopped trading with it.

CIA Operations lead to the Spread of Chaos in the World

34534444

Most people are aware of the wide range of secret US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) operations which the White House has been employing at different points throughout history to wreak havoc around the globe. And eventually even those who don’t may soon fall victims of the wide range of operations the CIA conducts.

The following are just some of the most notorious:

Operation ARTICHOKE – evolved from Project Bluebird and was launched in 1951 to be transformed later in the project MKULTRA . The goal of this operation was to test the government’s ability to cause amnesia through the use of psychotropic substances among certain individuals. This operation resulted in the creation of amphetamines and LSD that were tested on the population of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Operation AJAX – was launched in 1953 in close cooperation with British secret services to topple the government of Iran, which was the first successful attempt to launch a coup d’etat from abroad in modern history.

Operation Cyclone – the code name of a CIA program to arm the Afghan mujaheddin fighters during the Afghan War, which led to the emergence and the consequent strengthening of the Al-Qaeda terrorist organization. Former American agents admit that this was one of the longest and most expensive covert CIA operations, with a total cost of 20-30 million a year in 1979 when it started and soon reached a staggering 630 million dollars per year by 1987. This operation alone plunged a number of regional players into chaos.

Operation Mockingbird – was launched in 1950 in a bid to influence the international media. The implementation of this operation was handed over to Philip Graham, who later became the editor-in-chief of the Washington Post. Declassified documents have already uncovered that such high-profile media outlets including ABC, NBC, CBS, AP, Reuters, Time, Newsweek, and many others have been compromised by the CIA. To achieve the stated objectives of the operation, American agents influenced journalists, students, cultural organizations and whole journals to publish whatever sort of stories they deemed necessary. As the operation started targeting foreign media and political organizations as well. As the operation developed even further, the CIA started bribing foreign media and political figures. According to Western media analysts, the assets that were acquired during the Operation Mockingbird have been put to “good use” by the CIA and the White House up to and including today to influence the US and foreign media outlets. This fact was confirmed by a German journalist who works for Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Dr Udo Ulfkotte. However, the continuous abuse of the Western media that is forced into feeding fabricated information to its readers and viewers has resulted in a serious crisis of trust, since most people no longer believe anything Western media sources report.

Most readers need not be reminded that the “Arab Spring” was fabricated, which subsequently allowed the White House to get rid of a number of undesirable Arab leaders. Despite the obvious nature of the wide spanning operation, it seemed that no Western analyst would voluntarily admit its true nature or the implications of its final result. So-called “American-style democracy” failed in nearly every Arab nation, many of which are now permanently plunged into chaos, misery, poverty and violence.

The list of CIA failures wouldn’t be complete without mentioning Project AERODYNAMIC which was developed back in 1949. The stated goal of this operation was the destabilization of Ukraine via the promotion of Russophobia across its population. The CIA decided that it would be really clever to exploit notorious war criminal Stepan Bandera, a Ukrainian Nazi collaborator during the days of WWII. The development of this operation was outsourced to such companies as Prolog Research and Publishing Associates Inc. and as for the implementation, we can witness it today still unfolding before our very eyes.

Turkey is yet another country that is being exploited by the CIA in a bid to destabilize the EU through the flow of refugees. Despite the havoc that these actions have created, the EU is apparently unable to do anything about it, since Turkey enjoys special protection from the White House.

The most recent CIA secret operations, of course, involve various “doping scandals” and, of course, the Panama Papers. Strategists from Langley are actively couching these operations behind the belief of the absolute majority of the world population that no criminal activities should be concealed in any area of our lives, whether it’s sports or financial matters. For sure, the main beneficiary of these scandals is the White House, since it’s “exposing” the crimes of other countries, namely those that are reluctant to follow Washington’s orders.

If we are to take a look at the recent doping scandals, it should become evident of the absence of any charges against American athletes and the fact that all allegations were voiced before April 2016, when the International Olympic Committee was to name the final list of states that would compete for a chance to host the Summer Olympic Games of 2024, with the United States determined to content using all possible means, both legal and illegal.

As for the Panama Papers, the CIA didn’t pursue the goal of fighting corruption with those, since the United States could be considered at the very forefront of such corruption across the globe for years. These papers were released to target the leaders of Russia, China and some other states that have opposed Washington and its global agenda. However, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and British Prime Minister Cameron got caught in what could be considered “friendly fire”, since the population of the states that those figures lead are now calling for the impeachment of their corrupt leaders. As far as CIA involvement is concerned, one should mention that there’s two organizations that have been working in close cooperation with them – OECD (Organisation for European Economic Co-operation) and FATF (Financial Action Task Force), both for a long time. Moreover, the influence the CIA enjoys in Panama is well-known since Washington’s support of the former military dictator of this country – Manuel Noriega, who was an agent of the CIA. That is why the US State Department spokesman Mark Toner was forced to make the following statement (emphasis added):

I would like to refute the assumptions and allegations that we in any way involved in the actual leak of these documents

However, organizations such as USAID (United States Agency for international development) and “Open Society”, also known as the Soros Foundation, are openly listed among the sponsors of the Center for the study of corruption and organized crime that released the papers along with the Consortium of Investigative Journalism.

Of course, the list of the CIA’s operations goes on, but it should be noted that most of them aim at creating chaos to distract the people of the US and other regions of the world from the pressing social problems they encounter in their day-to-day lives. After all, in recent years the United States has been active to show its politicians in the best possible light in contrast to a background of global crime, corruption, and dictatorships they claim holds the upper hand in many other states. What else can they do when their military adventures in the Middle East have virtually destroyed the region, unleashing a wave of terrorism across the globe? It is terrorism that has been bred by Al-Qaeda which was in turn nurtured by Washington in a bid to fight its competition across the globe. But will the CIA ever be held accountable for its various “experiments” and “secret programs” – that’s the big question.

Citizens of the EU – as in vibrant civil society manifesting in an array of nations - are increasingly keen on ditching the political EU, whose only functioning trait remains its status as a giant market.

The rest is chaos: The euro is now synonymous with massive unemployment; Europeans aged 18-34 qualifying themselves as a “lost” or at least “sacrificed” generation; European “values” diluted by the rise of the populist extreme-right; “pacifism”transmuted into hot and cold war – from Syria to Russia; and European cities, from Paris to Brussels, under Salafi-jihadi assault.

Call it Walking Dead Europe

Walking Dead Europe manifests itself in myriad ways - from a “No” to a referendum in the Netherlands to the creeping possibility of Brexit. Now add to this the ultimate insult a stark fact: What could the EU possibly offer to the world as a vision when it subcontracts the security gates of Fortress Europe to the wily, carpet-dealing antics of Turkey’s Sultan Erdogan?

Even avowed Europeanists such as Le Monde – a former great newspaper turned Empire of Chaos-cheerleading rag – are now distilling long essays about the malaise.

As much as the fascination with declining empires may still hold sway (it’s so chic to digress about it, Death in Venice-style, sipping Cristal and eating Iranian caviar), seasoned veterans at the European Commission (EU) in Brussels cannot but avow their perplexity when confronted to the EU machine’s death wish.

It’s always easy to forget that the EU project was born in May 1950 as a common market; common coal and steel rendering impossible a new war between France and Germany, everything guaranteed by the American protector. This de facto American security protectorate implied NATO, from the start, was the real deal - much more than the budding mini-EU expanding under the aegis of Pax Americana and the largely manufactured fear implicit in the Cold War.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the EU incrementally opened its doors to virtually every European newcomer. The official spin was the dissemination of “peace” and those Enlightenment “values”. In practice, it meant NATO expansion coupled with zillions of euros to “rebuild” and “modernize” mostly Eastern Europe.

The expansion dementia even reached Turkey and Ukraine – everything micromanaged under NATO’s Mob-style protection racket, of course, which now imposes the official Brussels narrative that the New Cold War was launched by “Russian aggression”.

And what about those “values”? Germany has just demonstrated, instructively, how they now lie in a funeral pyre - as Chancellor Merkel first opened the doors to the refugee flood unleashed by Ankara just to abruptly close it by de facto killing the right of political asylum.

Cynics are right to argue whether this is in any way any different from Donald Trump and his Wall of Mexico.

Hop on the Thalys to doom

The enlightened debate – say, in Brussels, Berlin and Paris - is whether the Brussels supranational institutions have been rendered terminally inefficient by unruly nation-states. Yet the next minute blame is apportioned en masse to the Eastern Europeans – especially Hungary, Poland and Slovakia – and their practice of “illiberal democracy”. Wealthy liberal Western Europe is of course spared.

A practical consequence of this logic, sooner rather than later, would be Berlin deciding to curb aid to Eastern Europe; 15 billion euros a year for Poland alone.

What Eastern Europeans know for sure is that they’d rather go down, but the last thing they want is to leave the EU. In the Polish case, for instance, it would be unrivaled masochism to want to be immolated in a rack controlled, on each side, by historical enemies Germany and Russia.

So the dream of a federal Europe may be dead; what is the EU good for, apart from allowing a proliferation of EasyJets to Club Med destinations? It’s true that the system of production in Europe is now too integrated; unraveling it would be immensely costly. Every morning the Thalys trains from Paris continue to be crammed with players who come to do business with the EC. Yet even if the EU survives – two-speed, even three-speed – the euro is a different proposition. If the euro collapses the common market would be destroyed.

According to the Maastricht Treaty, every member-nation pledged to police its own finances. It’s not exactly what happened. Now the EU is trying Maastricht upside down – from a creaky banking union to the European Central Bank (ECB) addicted to“massive interventions”.

Sharp minds in Brussels admit the euro is on a Catch 22. Without a federal budget, and without “massive aid” from more flush members, austerity – not diamonds – is forever; and the victims will always be the poorest members. So even as Europe cannot get rid of the euro – European banks would be incapable of setting up a rational dissolution – the only way out, that is, further integration, is paralyzed.

Sleepwalking to mediocrity

The tragic Greek financial crisis demonstrated that the troika could impose what amounted to welfare and education“reforms” with absolute impunity over a sovereign state. That represented, in practice, some form of “integration” – but always under the aegis of the troika’s “enlightened” despotism. In consequence, Brussels could not but lose even more of its political legitimacy.

Sharp minds at the EC, off the record, admit that the battle over Europe will be, in fact, juridical. The EC is now immersed in a Dadaist make-believe exercise of convincing everyone the Schengen rules still apply. Even if they don't. Even if there’s no free circulation inside Schengen anymore. Even if Hungary and Slovakia, for instance, directly contested the decision by the Council of Europe dividing migrants among member states.

And further trouble looms ahead if Germany decides against further eurozone integration in case the German taxpayer must carry an “out of proportion” burden.

Former European commissioner Pascal Lamy is among those deeply vexed by the EU’s loss of influence, the erosion of those prized“values”, the loss of identity face to face with Americans, Russians and Chinese.

Well, for the War Party in the Beltway, Europe is irrelevant anyway; a sweet and pliable Venus unable to influence Mars. As for the Russians and Chinese – now embarked in a strategic partnership – what matters is to do plenty of good business with Europe, assuming Europeans still know how to identify a win-win. Usually they can’t because of many reasons, including ideological myopia, mediocrity and/or plain stupidity displayed by the EU’s political leadership.

What lies ahead is not pretty. There is an element of The Sleepwalkers – Christopher Clark’s masterful account of how Europe marched to war in 1914. But mostly, a low-budget American show gave away the game. This is Walking Dead Europe.
