The Donald Trumped: An Open Letter from His Former Communications Director

Former Trump Strategist Stephanie Cegielski

Even Trump’s most trusted advisors didn’t expect him to fare this well.

Almost a year ago, recruited for my public relations and public policy expertise, I sat in Trump Tower being told that the goal was to get The Donald to poll in double digits and come in second in delegate count. That was it.

The Trump camp would have been satisfied to see him polling at 12% and taking second place to a candidate who might hold 50%. His candidacy was a protest candidacy.

It pains me to say, but he is the presidential equivalent of Sanjaya on American Idol. President Trump would be President Sanjaya in terms of legitimacy and authority.

And I am now taking full responsibility for helping create this monster — and reaching out directly to those voters who, like me, wanted Trump to be the real deal.

My support for Trump began probably like yours did. Similar to so many other Americans, I was tired of the rhetoric in Washington. Negativity and stubbornness were at an all-time high, and the presidential prospects didn’t look promising.

In 2015, I fell in love with the idea of the protest candidate who was not bought by corporations. A man who sat in a Manhattan high-rise he had built, making waves as a straight talker with a business background, full of successes and failures, who wanted America to return to greatness.

I was sold.

Last summer, I signed on as the Communications Director of the Make America Great Again Super PAC.

It was still early in the Trump campaign, and we hit the ground running. His biggest competitor had more than $100 million in a Super PAC. The Jeb Bush deep pockets looked to be the biggest obstacle we faced. We seemed to be up against a steep challenge, especially since a big part of the appeal of a Trump candidacy was not being influenced by PAC money.

[READ: Donald Trump’s Hate Speech Is Breeding Violence and There Is More to Come]

After the first debate, I was more anxious than ever to support Trump. The exchange with Megyn Kelly was like manna from heaven for a communications director. She appeared like yet another reporter trying to kick out the guest who wasn’t invited to the party. At the time, I felt excited for the change to the debate he could bring. I began realizing the man really resonates with the masses and would bring people to the process who had never participated before.

That was inspiring to me.
It wasn’t long before every day I awoke to a buzzing phone and a shaking head because Trump had said something politically incorrect the night before. I have been around politics long enough to know that the other side will pounce on any and every opportunity to smear a candidate.

But something surprising and absolutely unexpected happened. Every other candidate misestimated the anger and outrage of the “silent majority” of Americans who are not a part of the liberal elite. So with each statement came a jump in the polls. Just when I thought we were finished, The Donald gained more popularity.

I don’t think even Trump thought he would get this far. And I don’t even know that he wanted to, which is perhaps the scariest prospect of all.

He certainly was never prepared or equipped to go all the way to the White House, but his ego has now taken over the driver’s seat, and nothing else matters. The Donald does not fail. The Donald does not have any weakness. The Donald is his own biggest enemy.

A devastating terrorist attack in Pakistan targeting Christians occurred on Easter Sunday, and Trump’s response was to tweet, “Another radical Islamic attack, this time in Pakistan, targeting Christian women & children. At least 67 dead, 400 injured. I alone can solve.”

Ignoring the fact that at the time Trump tweeted this (time-stamped 4:37 p.m.) the latest news reports had already placed the number differently at 70 dead, 300 injured, take a moment to appreciate the ridiculous, cartoonish, almost childish arrogance of saying that he alone can solve. Does Trump think that he is making a cameo on Wrestlemania (yes, one of his actual credits)?

This is not how foreign policy works. For anyone. Ever.

Superhero powers where “I alone can solve” problems are not real. They do not exist for Batman, for Superman, for Wrestlemania and definitely not for Donald Trump.

What was once Trump’s desire to rank second place to send a message to America and to increase his power as a businessman has nightmarishly morphed into a charade that is poised to do irreparable damage to this country if we do not stop this campaign in its tracks.

[READ: IT HAPPENED TO ME: Donald Trump Ruined My Relationship]

I’ll say it again: Trump never intended to be the candidate. But his pride is too out of control to stop him now.

You can give Trump the biggest gift possible if you are a Trump supporter: stop supporting him.

He doesn’t want the White House. He just wants to be able to say that he could have run the White House. He’s achieved that already and then some. If there is any question, take it from someone who was recruited to help the candidate succeed, and initially very much wanted him to do so.

The hard truth is: Trump only cares about Trump.

And if you are one of the disaffected voters — one of the silent majority like me — who wanted a candidate who could be your voice, I want to speak directly to you as one of his biggest advocates and supporters.

He is not that voice. He is not your voice. He is only Trump’s voice.

Trump is about Trump. Not one of his many wives. Not one of his many “pieces of ass.” He is, at heart, a self-preservationist.

In fact, many people are not aware of the Trump campaign’s internal slogan, but I will tell you. It is stolen from a make-believe television presidency on The West Wing where Martin Sheen portrayed President Bartlet. The slogan on the show amongst the idealistic group of Bartlet’s staff was “Let Bartlet Be Bartlet.”

Inside the Trump camp, the slogan became “Let Trump Be Trump.”

It is a repurposed slogan that seemed spot-on for the candidate. He is an intelligent, charismatic man who is involved in every aspect of his organization and would rather speak from the cuff than read briefing notes and recite them. I, in fact, admire Trump for this. But saying this qualifies him to be president is like saying that Seth Rogen is suited to be president. Another extraordinary improvisor, not an extraordinary presidential candidate.

Trump has undoubtedly lived up to the slogan, right down to his main public-relations liaison. Rather than go for a focus-group Washington insider, his communications person had previously taken press calls for the Trump Organization and directed them to the appropriate Trump child. She joked that before joining the campaign she thought “Common Core” was a class at Equinox.

The primary problem with this? What I’ve seen the longer I’ve helped prop him up along with the millions who are helping Trump is that we got the slogan wrong. A more accurate internal slogan would read, “Let Trump Help Trump.”

I don’t dismiss any single Trump constituent, which is why I believe it’s important to let you know that the candidate does.

I, too, think our country has gone off track in its values. I, too, think that we need a dramatic change of course. But I am, in my heart, a policy wonk and a believer in coming to the table with necessary knowledge for leading the free world.

The man does not know policy, nor does he have the humility to admit what he does not know — the most frightening position of all.

I remember watching the second Trump debate and thinking, After this, he is going to have to start hammering it home on policy; the country needs substance to make an informed decision.

I wished for it six months ago and am still waiting for it today. He had an opportunity after the terror attacks in Belgium and instead he used the opportunity to talk about closing the borders and what a mess that country had become. I was appalled that he offered no condolences or words of support; he merely gave his “build a wall” stump speech and talked about his greatness.

I felt sad for him at that moment.

And now, with the latest horrifying terror attack in Pakistan, my sadness has turned into anger.

I consider myself a part of the silent majority that led to Trump’s rise, which is why I want you to know that I am with you — I wanted Trump to be real, too.

He is not.

He even says so himself. His misogyny? That’s the character.

His presidential candidacy? That’s a character, too.

The problem with characters is they are the stuff of soap operas and sitcoms and reality competitions — not political legacies.

Trump made me believe. Until I woke up.

And he has no problem abusing your support the same way he cheated hard-working men and women out of millions of dollars, for which he is now being sued.

I came into this eager to support a savvy businessman who received little outside funding. I loved Trump’s outsider status. But a year has now passed since I was first approached to become part of Team Trump.

While the pundits pontificated about what type of PR stunt Trump had up his billion-dollar sleeves, I met with people who convinced me he was serious about changing the political conversation. I wanted to raise millions for him. I wanted to contribute to millions of votes.

[READ: Don’t Be So Sure That Donald Trump Can’t Win the Republican Nomination — Or the Presidency]

And as part of that support, in October, I supported the internal decision to close the Super PAC in order to position him as the quintessential non-politician. I still supported him with great passion after that. The decision to close the Super PAC was part of that devotion to his message of outsider change.

But something was shifting.

Without intending to do so, I began to hear and evaluate him more critically and skeptically as a member of the voting public rather than a communications person charged with protecting his positions.

I no longer felt that he was the leader the country was looking for, and I found myself longing — aching, really — for policy substance that went beyond building a wall and making Mexico pay for it. What were once bold — although controversial — statements now seemed to be attempts to please the crowds, not direction to lead this country to a better place. I began to realize his arrogance and isolation had taken over and were now controlling his message.

And here’s what he tapped into: the unprecedented, unbelievable anger.

Because we are all angry — and we all have a right to be. But Trump is not our champion. He would stab any one of his supporters in the back if it earned him a cent more in his pocket.

Unfortunately, the more vitriolic Trump has become, the more the people responded to him. That drove him to push the boundaries further and further.

I also started seeing a trend of incompetence and deniability.

When there was a tweet that contained an error, he would blame it on an intern; when there was a photo containing a World War II Nazi Germany background, he would blame it on an intern; when he answered questions in an overtly controversial fashion, he would claim that he did not properly hear the question. He refused to take responsibility for his actions while frequently demanding apologies from others.

Imagine Trump wronged you, even in the smallest possible way. He would go to the grave denying he had ever done anything wrong to you — ever.

Trump acts as if he’s a fictional character. But like Hercules, Donald Trump is a work of fiction.

No matter how many times he repeats it, Trump would not be the “best” at being a president, being in shape, fighting terrorism, selling steaks, and whatever other “best” claim he has made in the last 15 minutes.

He would be the best at something, though. He is the best at looking out for Donald Trump — at all costs.

Don’t let our country pay that price.

The Secret Law of Opposites

There is a secret Establishment Hierarchy which determines governmental policy and runs the World -- it is evil beyond imagination and operates according to the Law of Opposites

by Preston James

Note: This is a long article and you can read the bold print and the conclusion to save time.

The small number of individuals who really run things do so in abject secrecy and sit at the top of a Hierarchy of Evil.

They serve as the key decision makers and top policy-makers in a world of duplicity run by them. And they are wrinkled very old men nearing their end of days.

They are in a mad race to attain their secret Globalist NWO Agenda, which is unimaginably evil and completely anti-human.

They believe that they will only be able to be regenerated in an immortal form once they have attained their Globalist NWO Agenda.

Gang stalking

Actually they are criminally insane psychopaths, but they do retain the controls of power in America and much of the world. They and their top subordinates, initiates and Cutouts are always two-faced deceivers like themselves that pretend to be serving the public good, while secretly doing exactly the opposite, spreading hate, conflict, mass suffering and death, and poverty.

These individuals are truly evil, but with a nice faceand very effective powers for deceiving the naive public, which tends to view them as benevolent parent figures. For those who suspect what they are really about, the unlimited money and power they will share with those who are willing to do their bidding is a strong reinforcer, and entices most to go along to get along.

These Select Few who sit at the top of this World Hierarchy of Evil control all the key institutions, large corporations and the existing Establishment, even right down to your own neighborhood.

If any public official or any person publicly crosses them and goes outside allowed parameters, they will be sanctioned and often blacklisted to varying degrees from participating in the system in any meaningful way.

Some are severely sanctioned Cointelpro-style with the FBI, CIA or foreign Intel operatives assigned to stalk them, follow them around and harass them.

The Law of Opposites, a secret Luciferian teaching of the Hierarchy is completely divergent from normal societal expectations, but serves as their main operating principle and a road-map on how to attain their goals.

7b8360bb3deb5f29401e87ff34f45f46992bd02b5

Few could ever imagine how extreme the evil that the Select Few and those who occupy the top positions of the Hierarchy actually do on a daily basis.

This Hierarchy of Evil is hidden from mainstream society and operates on the Law of Opposites. The Law of Opposites is a Luciferian Law that only those who are willing and able to secretly engage in abject evil while putting on a convincingly nice face will be anointed with the power to rule.

This principle, the Law of Opposites, is based on the idea that in order to establish a whole new Globalist NWO System, the existing natural order must be destroyed.

This involves the destruction of the family and normal male and female sex roles; dirtying up the populace with drugs and pornography and dysfunctional culture; destruction of normal character and morality in exchange for the worship of the self- and institutional narcissism; massive race-mixing; forced diversity and political correctness; and destruction of borders, language and culture; covert eugenics to feed big pharma and big medicine; and induction of massive chaos in many divergent ways.

__________

The End Justifies the Means

The whole Leo Straussian existential teaching that the “end justifies the means” is not only a Neo-Bolshevik teaching, but a age-old Luciferian/Satanic teaching. And this ideology formed the basis of the City of London- and Wall Street-financed Bolshevik Revolution in Russia in 1917, and the Maoist revolution in China after WW2.

Both of these so-called “communist” revolutions were expressions of the evil power of the secret Establishment Hierarchy associated with the City of London private Rothschild Banking money power (aka, the power of the money-changers).

“For over a decade the Clandestine Services has had the mission of maintaining a capability for influencing human behavior…If we are to continue to maintain a capability for influencing behavior, we are virtually obliged to test on unwitting humans.” Richard Helms, Deputy Director of the CIA (1963)[Jim Keith, Mind Control and UFOs: Casebook on Alternative 3, pg. 93]

“For over a decade the Clandestine Services has had the mission of maintaining a capability for influencing human behavior…If we are to continue to maintain a capability for influencing behavior, we are virtually obliged to test on unwitting humans.” Richard Helms, Deputy Director of the CIA (1963) [Jim Keith, Mind Control and UFOs: Casebook on Alternative 3, pg. 93]

What happens to someone who violates the policies and edicts of this secret Hierarchy of Evil?

If you are a whistleblower you may be placed on a nationwide “No Work List” run by Homeland Security, and the FBI will follow you around and talk to any employer and inform them you are a suspected domestic terrorist, and it will be suggested that the employer refrain from employing you.

One of the sickest things about the Select Few and their top associates is that the Hierarchy has reach all the way down to the street level, your street and neighborhood through many different means. You can have one sicko at the top of the Hierarchy that sets a policy to disarm America, and then the orders are given all the way down, and various Intel groups begin creating covert strategies using false-flags, such as staged real and faked mass-shootings in gun-free zones and use of various MK-Ultra mind-kontrolled stone killers who have had their souls murdered by the CIA, FBI or Mossad.

Various normal everyday tasks can be transformed by FBI and Intel operatives to become huge difficulties. House payments may become unrecorded, your home may be re-possessed even though you never missed a payment. Your car may be repeatedly vandalized. You may get fake traffic tickets that you never paid because you never really got them, and all at once you are arrested for non-payment.

Your residence may be frequently entered (your door lock quickly picked using a battery-powered rotary device) and disrupted inside to harass you. You may be attacked intermittently or continually with highly sophisticated psychotronic weapons. Your friends and family may be unexplainably turned against you by sophisticated remote mind-kontrol using psychotronic (EMF inductive) means to entrain their brains.

In the top ranks of the Hierarchy, it’s always a game of opposites and duplicity, lies and mandated evil far beyond imagination of the masses.

janus

The Hierarchy’s game is one of opposites, always saying one thing while doing just the opposite in secret.

Their overall goals and objectives always conform in the long run to their age-old secret Luciferian Globalist NWO Agenda despite some policies and actions they mandate which appear to be helpful and constructive.

Such policies and actions are only deployed to serve a higher purpose, such as to put the public to sleep, to keep them fooled or satiated, that is, to gain their confidence when it is not justified.

This secret philosophy of doing the exact opposite of what good ordinary folks who live by the “Golden Rule” (treat others the way you want to be treated) is based on the belief that in order to stay in complete control over society, a ruler must be seven times more evil and vicious than his worst enemies.

At the top of the Hierarchy, they believe that if you want to stay in power you must be far more secretly evil and vicious than any of your opponents, including the common masses you rule over, otherwise you will be easily deposed.

And, it’s a belief that unless you are more vicious and more secretly evil than anyone else, you do not deserve to stay in power at the top of the Hierarchy, nor will you be able to do so. This translates into an attitude of looking on the masses as “useless eaters” to be purged and purified through massive eugenics and depopulation control.

In Roman times, the Roman rulers use crucifixions and abject terror to keep the people in line. Now days Hierarchy Rulers deploy evil against opponents covertly. One of their main strategies is to provoke weak-minded individuals to break their corporate laws so that they can indict, convict and punish them and strip them of their respectability for life.

henry-kissinger-depopulationThis small number of individuals who really run things sit at the top of a Worldwide Hierarchy of Evil that is associated with the City of London Rothschild private central banking system.

It is this private banking system which provides the endless power to the world’s largest Organized Crime Syndicate, the Khazarian Mafia, also known as the Synagogue of Satan or Mystery Babylon.

Inside America, the illegal unConstitutional private banking System, the Federal Reserve System (FRS) is a franchise of this City of London Rothschild private central banking system. Like the rest of the City of London Rothschild central bank franchises, the FRS specializes in creating counterfeit money as debt-notes and distributing it to users, while charging pernicious usury for using what should have been their own real money in the first place.

Evil with a nice face is the expected standard for those who intend to move up into the top Hierarchy Positions.

In this Hierarchy of Evil, it is a game of opposites, lies deceptions and two-faced politicians and government officials, initiated and selected by the Hierarchy according to its Rites of Initiation, which become more and more extreme and deviant at each higher level.

This Hierarchy of Evil has a public side displayed for public consumption, which is crafted to seem benevolent, when the secret power side of the system is so evil and deviant that few are able to believe it when they are informed, partly because the Controlled Major Mass Media (CMMM) refuses to carry stories which would reveal this truth.

___________

ILLUMINATIPARTY1

Major criminal acts of deviance are needed to provide kicks and entertainment to the richest, most powerful folks in the World.

What do those who occupy the top positions do for fun when they have easy access to every luxury and normal pleasure that they have gotten bored with over time? They increasingly go for kink, perversity, sadism, pedophilia, child sacrifice and other acts of the Dark Side.

They do this for kicks and stimulation, but there are even more important reasons. Many of these acts are part of Satanic rituals they do in abject secrecy to commune with Lucifer to receive powers to rule.

They believe Lucifer is the god of this World and their god, and they believe he has anointed them with power to attain his secret Globalist NWO Agenda. When attained, it will result in Lucifer rising to become the NWO Ruler of his own Luciferian World.

But they also use these rituals and initiation ceremonies for new up and comers moving up in the Hierarchy. Of course all these deviant criminal acts are videoed in case they are needed later for human compromise of corrections for straying outside allowed parameters.

One form of entertainment for the Top Hierarchy members and the Select Few is to make sure doofuses and strange looking individuals are promoted up the ranks and put in charge of USG institutions, such as the FBI (e.g. J. Edgar Mary), Homeland Security, various Congressional Committees, etc.

You can get the idea here, these Hierarchy folks get great entertainment from watching these strange looking deviants and doofuses sit in high governmental positions and jerk the members of society around. Bottom line is that we all end up with some strange-looking and strange acting ducks in high places — folks like LBJ, Tricky Dick, and numerous politicians who break the laws at will and always seem to get off where anyone else gets the book thrown at them.

Abducted children

Abducted children

The actual agenda of the Hierarchy is one of unimaginable evil, something no normal human would expect and that is why it is so hard to convince the public this is real and is destroying America and its sovereignty.

This Evil Agenda of the Hierarchy is one of criminally insane Psychopaths, and it is an age old inter-generational one.

One part of this radical Globalist NWO Agenda is to Balkanize the USA into different regions as a part of the North American Union, perhaps with The EU serving as administrators of the eastern sector, China serving as administrators of the southern sector and Mexico, Japan serving as administrators of the western sector and the UK serving as administrators of the central sector and Canada.

The purpose in de-industrializing and exporting most good jobs from America is to weaken it and once and forever obliterate the style of populism our Founding Fathers established in America in 1776.

___________

The age old Globalist NWO Agenda is unimaginably evil and something that is being rammed down the throats of humanity by covert criminal force.

Should we expect anything less from those that run the largest Organized Crime Syndicate in the World, the Khazarian Mafia (KM)?

Because the Globalist NWO Agenda is basically an Agenda of the dark side, it is based on administering mass death and suffering to humans all over the World. This is done on a continuing inter-generational basis in order to maintain power, and to keep the masses weak, needy and conflicted so they can never effectively challenging the Hierarchy’s top leaders, the the Select few, the wrinkled old men of renown and unimaginable evil.

These Select Few are so incredibly evil that their acts are unimaginable to most normal Americans who even if told would never believe it unless all the Major Mass Media Talking heads said so.

Another part of this Globalist NWO Agenda is to radically depopulate Planet Earth of humans by 90% and to destroy all suburbs, outlying residences including farms, and move the surviving 10% into large metropolis areas with stacked very small apartments and a totally controlled environment (e.g. Agenda 21).

_63551935_totp75The Hierarchy is a worldwide occult networkof high freemasonry organizations and satanic cults whose top leaders operate in the shadows and help the Select Few work toward attaining their age-old Agenda of Evil. The existing laws and the US Constitution are there only for public consumption, they are easily breached by high ranking members of the Hierarchy through one to one personal contacts with Hierarchy associates.

Those who have been close to those who occupy the top Hierarchy positions have reported that these folks seek recreation and excitement in ways which are radically divergent from normal. Such activities include strange parties with strange costumes and sexual practices, S&M, pedophilia, Child torture, child sacrifice, child hunts on private game reserves, and vivisections, many done for entertainment but many also as Satanic blood and human sacrifice rituals to obtain power.

At the top of the Hierarchy life gets boring and they always seem to seek new kicks of extreme deviancy and blatant criminal acts.

Because of their endless wealth these oligarchs tend to have access to all the luxuries they desire, including five star hotels, the best resorts, multiple villas all over the World. One prominent Hierarchy family associated with the City of London banking is reputed to have over 100 homes all over the world with a full staff at each home that keeps them ready everyday and night for any unexpected visit by the Hierarchy owner.

__________

Conclusion

Their sacrifice was not in vain

Their sacrifice was not in vain

Enough bad news. Now for the Good News. Various factions of the World are rising up and associating to end the primacy of the US Petro Dollar and the fraud of the City of London Counterfeit debt-note pernicious usury system. We have the BRICS, the AIIB and various direct trading agreements which no longer use the US Petro Dollar.

There is another factor entering the picture which will have a great unexpected impact through its coming manipulation of the Vatican. Insiders call this the Third Force and inside the Vatican in the highest positions, they claim they have entered into secret treaties with Alien ETs that will soon change everything in our world, top to bottom.

If this prediction is accurate, we will see the Hierarchy shredded in short order as the Third Force plays its hand out. Spontaneous populism is beginning to emerge in many nations and seems to be a by product of the alternative news provided by the Internet which has now surpassed the popularity of the Controlled Major Mass Media (CMMM), especially in folks under 30. This subject will be covered in a forthcoming article.

Despite the extreme power of the secret evil Hierarchy, there are actually limits placed on them. Insiders have reported that they operate under rules of play and must give informed consent to the masses. Thus the Georgia Guidestones allegedly Ted Turner was involved in.

Folks committed to doing good, feeding the hungry and helping the less fortunate are usually left alone. Some activists who are legit are left alone because the Hierarchy believes that opposition and fair play is necessary for their victories to mean anything.

As America reaches a financial cliff, we should all expect many radical pressure brought to bear to erode and degrade the power of the Hierarchy. The Select few know this is coming and that is why they have created Homeland Security, militarized the police, and keep staging Gladio-style False-flag, inside-job staged terror events.

sharp shooter girl

They do this to grab more and more power and use all this to stifle dissent and trick Americans into giving up their God-given Rights. Rights like the Right to Bear arms, which is supposed to be guaranteed in the Second Amendment of the US Constitution.

Stay tuned because this situation in America is bound to heat up and it is likely many unexpected events will transpire. There is a big unexpected surprise coming in the future and this will most likely completely restructure most World power.

And do not be surprised in wide based emergent populism erupts all over America and becomes centered around State Rights and the 10th Amendment. We are already seeing a popular movement to force juries to be informed of their constitutional right to void any conviction if they believe the law is wrong or unConstitution (Jury Nullification).

So things are not hopeless and real change is brewing right now. But be willing to do your part to get the truth out about 9-11-01 being a false-flag, inside-job, and Sandy Hook being a two day DHS/FEMA Capstone drill with no dead kids or adults in a school closed down in 2008 for asbestos contamination.

The hardest thing about all this is just how strange and unexpected it is, that such a unimaginably small group of criminally insane bloodline psychopaths could take over the whole world through the creation of counterfeit money. All done by implementing a worldwide private central banking system run by the Khazarian Mafia (KM) under claimed Luciferian power, a system based on debt-notes that bear pernicious usury. Fortunately this evil system that has held most of the world captive in debt-slavery, wars for profit and mass death, poverty, illness and misery appears to be coming to an end, as the US Petro Dollar approaches collapse and alternative trading and banking system emerge.

Nuclear terrorism fears loom over Obama's final atomic summit

By Matt Spetalnick and David Brunnstrom

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Just as fears of nuclear terrorism are rising, U.S. President Barack Obama's drive to lock down vulnerable atomic materials worldwide seems to have lost momentum and could slow further.

With less than 10 months left in office to follow through on one of his signature foreign policy initiatives, Obama will convene leaders from more than 50 countries in Washington this week for his fourth and final Nuclear Security Summit, a high-level diplomatic process that started and will end on his watch.

A boycott by Russian President Vladimir Putin, apparently unwilling to join in a U.S.-dominated gathering at a time of increased tensions between Washington and Moscow, adds to doubts that the meeting will yield major results.

Deadly militant attacks in Brussels have fueled concern that Islamic State could eventually target nuclear plants and develop radioactive “dirty bombs,” a topic that may well be uppermost in leaders’ minds as they meet.

Despite significant progress by Obama in persuading dozens of countries to rid themselves of bomb-making materials or reduce and safeguard stockpiles, much of the world's plutonium and enriched uranium remains vulnerable to theft.

FROM RUSSIA, NO LOVE

The absence of Russia, one of the biggest atomic powers, could detract from decisions reached in Washington this week.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Wednesday Russia was skipping the summit because of a ”shortage of mutual cooperation” in working out the agenda.

While noting that Moscow had continued joint work on nuclear security, White House spokesman Josh Earnest said it was going to “miss out on an opportunity” and that its no-show illustrated the “degree to which Russia is isolated". Russia has chafed over U.S.-led sanctions over the Ukraine conflict.

Efforts to make the world safer have also been complicated by North Korea’s nuclear weapons advance and Pakistan’s move toward smaller, tactical nuclear weapons, which Washington fears may further destabilize an already volatile region.

All of this weighs on Obama’s agenda as he prepares to host world leaders on Thursday and Friday. He inaugurated the event nearly six years ago, after using a landmark speech in Prague in 2009 to lay out the goal of ridding the world of nuclear weapons as a central theme of his presidency.

But there is no guarantee that once Obama, the driving force behind the initiative, leaves office in January his successor will keep the issue a high priority.

WHITE HOUSE TOUTS ACHIEVEMENTS BUT PROGRESS SLOWER

The White House previewed the summit by touting a list of achievements in the U.S.-led effort to tie down loose bomb-grade materials, and arms control advocates commend Obama for galvanizing an international response to the problem.

However, many say progress has slowed since the last summit in 2014 and countries such as Japan, India and Pakistan are preparing activities that could increase stockpiles of nuclear materials.

“The Nuclear Security Summits have had a positive effect, but the strategic goal of developing an effective global nuclear security system remains unachieved,” the Nuclear Threat Initiative, an anti-proliferation watchdog, said in a report this month.

According to the group's Nuclear Security Index, which tracks the safety of weapons-usable nuclear materials, the past two years have brought no improvement in a range of measures, including on-site physical protection, security during transport and the ability to recover lost radioactive materials.

The report also said many countries' nuclear reactors were vulnerable to online attacks. Seven of 24 countries with weapons-grade material, including China and Belgium, received the lowest possible score for their facilities' cyber security.

Other critics point to a lack of an agreed-upon set of international standards for nuclear security or a mechanism for keeping tabs on common sources of radioactive material often found in hospitals and medical labs.

However, Laura Holgate, Obama’s adviser on weapons of mass destruction, cited commitments from 30 countries at the 2014 summit to secure their most dangerous material.

"The international community has made it harder than ever for terrorists to acquire nuclear weapons, and that has made us all more secure," she told reporters before the summit.

"DIRTY BOMB" FEARS

Two of the Brussels suicide bombers secretly filmed the daily routine of the head of Belgium’s nuclear research and development program and considered an attack on a nuclear site in the country, according to Belgian media.

U.S. experts are less concerned about militants obtaining nuclear weapon components than about thefts of ingredients for a low-tech “dirty bomb" that would use conventional explosives to disperse radioactive material and sow panic.

U.S. officials said they had no doubt that Islamic State, which controls swaths of Syria and Iraq, was interested in obtaining such materials, but Holgate said U.S. authorities had no “explicit indications” that the group had tried to do so.

More commitments from world leaders to enhance nuclear security are expected at the summit but anti-proliferation groups worry that without further meetings at the highest levels, interest could wane and improvements could backslide.

After Brussels, leaders tackling threat of nuclear terrorism

WASHINGTON (AP) — Still reeling from attacks in Brussels and Paris, world leaders are wrestling this week with the chilling prospect of the Islamic State group or other extremists unleashing a nuclear attack on a major Western city.

Preventing terrorists from obtaining nuclear materials is the central focus as President Barack Obama hosts leaders from roughly 50 countries for a nuclear security summit starting Thursday. Despite three previous summits and six years of Obama's prodding, security officials warn that the ingredients for a nuclear device or a "dirty bomb" are alarmingly insecure.

"We know that terrorist organizations have the desire to get access to these raw materials and to have a nuclear device," said Ben Rhodes, Obama's deputy national security adviser. Still, the White House said there was no indication of an imminent plot.

Decades after the Cold War, the threat of a nuclear war between superpowers has given way to growing concerns about non-state actors, including Islamic State and al-Qaida offshoots operating in North Africa and in Yemen and Saudi Arabia. Although the U.S. and its allies still worry about North Korea, Obama believes the threat posed by Iran has subsided due to the nuclear deal, leaving extremist groups among the likeliest perpetrators.

The havoc such an attack could wreak in an urban area like New York or London is concerning enough that leaders scheduled a special session on the threat during the two-day summit. U.S. officials said the leaders would discuss a hypothetical scenario about a chain of events that could lead to nuclear terrorism.

Those concerns have taken on heightened significant following the March 22 attacks at a Brussels airport and subway station. Last year, authorities searching the apartment of two brothers linked to earlier attacks in Paris found video of a senior official at a Belgian nuclear waste facility. The brothers were part of the Islamic State cell that went on to strike Brussels; both died in the attacks.

On the summit's sidelines, Obama planned to meet with the leaders of China, South Korea and Japan, who all share U.S. concerns about North Korea's nuclear program.

Yet other key players will be missing. Russian President Vladimir Putin refused to attend, as Moscow scoffed at what it deemed U.S. efforts to take control of the process. Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif canceled his trip following an Easter bombing that killed 72 people.

Some 2,000 metric tons of highly enriched uranium and separated plutonium being used in civilian or military programs could be turned into a nuclear bomb if stolen or diverted, the White House said. And fewer than half of the countries participating in the summit have even agreed to secure their sources of radiological material, needed for a dirty bomb.

"The policies are moving in the right direction," said Joe Cirincione, who runs the nuclear security group Ploughshares Fund. "But when you're fleeing a forest fire, it's not just a question of direction, it's a question of speed."

Nuclear security experts say there are four potential scenarios for a nuclear-related attack by an extremist group. Some are more likely than others.

The most devastating but improbable scenario involves a group stealing a fully functional bomb from a nuclear-armed country. Most nuclear experts point to Pakistan as the likeliest source, though that would require cooperation with someone on the inside of Pakistan's military.

Easier to pull off would be for IS or another group to obtain fissile material like highly enriched uranium, then turn it into a crude nuclear device delivered by truck or ship. A third possibility is that extremists could bomb an existing nuclear facility, such as the Belgian waste plant, spreading highly radioactive material over a wide area.

The most likely scenario that security experts fear is that a group could get ahold of radioactive material, such as cesium or cobalt, for a dirty bomb that could be carried in a suitcase. Those materials are widely used in industrial, academic and hospital settings, with no consistent security standards across the globe. Last year, an Associated Press investigation revealed multiple attempts by black market smugglers to sell radioactive material to Middle East extremists.

Unlike a nuclear bomb, the only people killed instantly by a "dirty bomb" would be those close to the blast site. But the blast could spread cancer-causing substances over a vast area, triggering panic and evacuations.

"Even if it is small, such an incident would create such havoc in the world that you have to take it quite seriously," said former Ambassador Wendy Sherman, who spearheaded U.S. nuclear negotiations with Iran and North Korea before joining the Albright Stonebridge Group.

Detonated in a major city, a dirty bomb could cause tens of billions of dollars in economic damage, said Andrew Bieniawski, who studies materials security at the Nuclear Threat Initiative. People and businesses would have to be relocated — potentially for years — while the contamination is cleaned up. Few would be inclined to ever go back, a reality on display in Chernobyl, Ukraine decades after the 1986 accident.

Reducing the threat of nuclear terrorism has been a persistent theme for Obama, who won the Nobel Peace Prize after emphasizing nuclear disarmament. Four months into his presidency, Obama warned in a much-cited speech in Prague that nuclear weapons were "the most dangerous legacy of the Cold War."

Are we getting the leaders we deserve?

Matt Bai
National Political Columnist
March 31, 2016

If you’re tired of hearing Donald Trump go on about his ratings and polls, if you’re mystified by the Twitter War of the Candidates’ Wives, if you can’t understand why Wolf Blitzer interviews a former contestant on “The Apprentice” as if she were a political authority, then I’ve got a video you really need to watch.

The video I’m showing you here, courtesy of C-Span’s archive, is of a presidential candidate speaking in 1987, at a moment of tectonic upheaval in our politics and media. Chances are pretty good you’ve never seen it, or even heard about it, and there’s a reason for that.

Before I tell the remarkable story of that eight-minute speech, though, let’s put it in the context of our moment.

Recently, a bunch of commentators — among them the president of the United States — seem to have latched on to the idea that the media is culpable in enabling Trump’s antic march to the Republican nomination. In the New York Times, my former colleagues Nicholas Kristof and Jim Rutenberg have both written columns in the past week asking whether we, as an industry, need to be more accountable.

Regular readers of this column know that I wrote early and often on this theme, including a column last December about the destructive “symbiosis” between Trump and the media — a term very much in fashion now.

In fact, not long ago I wrote an entire book on the collision of entertainment and political journalism, called “All the Truth Is Out,” which seems to have accidentally anticipated the Trump phenomenon. I borrowed from the brilliant work of the social critic Neil Postman, whose 1985 book “Amusing Ourselves to Death” feels more relevant today than it probably did then.

But the guy who really predicted all of this was Gary Hart, the protagonist of “All the Truth Is Out.” And man, did he try to sound the alarm.

At this time in 1987, Hart was rather like the Hillary Clinton of his day, only more talented and more visionary; he had been the presumed nominee of the Democratic Party since narrowly losing in 1984, and the Gallup Poll had him beating George H.W. Bush — then the sitting vice president — by double digits. A man of staggering intellect, he was talking even then about the rise of stateless terrorism and the arrival of a high-tech economy.

But his campaign unraveled in the space of five surreal days, during which reporters from the Miami Herald hid outside Hart’s home in order to catch him spending time with a younger woman. Hart found himself undone by the first modern political sex scandal — the inevitable result of myriad forces that were just then reshaping the media, from the echoes of Watergate to the birth of the mobile satellite.

What happened next is interesting and almost entirely forgotten.

Driven from the campaign trail in New Hampshire, Hart repaired to his cabin in the Denver foothills, where he and his family were literally penned in by a fleet of satellite trucks and news choppers. His aides wrote him the kind of withdrawal statement we’ve come to expect from scandalized politicians — contrite, gracious, bland.

Hart couldn’t sleep after reading that speech. It made him want to vomit. He called his close friend Warren Beatty (who would later make the film “Bulworth,” not incidentally) and talked through what he wished he could say instead.

Then, the next morning, Hart drove the canyon road down to Denver, stepped before the national media and calmly delivered one of the most stinging and prescient indictments of an American institution you will ever see.

“In public life, some things may be interesting, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re important,” Hart said, decrying a process that he said reduced reporters to hunters and candidates to the hunted.

“And then after all that, ponderous pundits wonder in mock seriousness why some of the best people in this country choose not to run for high office,” Hart went on. “Now I want those talented people who supported me to insist that this system be changed. Too much of it is just a mockery. And if it continues to destroy people’s integrity and honor, then that system will eventually destroy itself.

“Politics in this country, take it from me, is on the verge of becoming another form of athletic competition or sporting match.”

He closed by paraphrasing his idol, Thomas Jefferson: “I tremble for my country when I think we may in fact get the kind of leaders we deserve.”

Whenever I talk about my book to audiences around the country, I close with those lines. Invariably, I look up to find shocked and silent voters nodding their heads, amazed at how eerily that captures our present reality.

So why haven’t you heard anything about this seminal speech? I’ll tell you why. Because within 24 hours of its delivery, despite the polls showing that the public mostly sided with Hart over the reporters, America’s elite media, led by its columnists and editorial boards, rose up in unison to mock and discredit it.

“Instead of saying goodbye with a measure of dignity, respect and introspection,” A.M. Rosenthal, the Times’ former editor, wrote on the paper’s op-ed page, “Gary Hart told us he had decided that Gary Hart was a wonderful man after all and that everybody was responsible for Gary Hart’s political demise except Gary Hart.” (Watch Hart’s speech and decide for yourself if that was the point.)

Hart’s monologue was instantly buried in an avalanche of defensiveness and moral posturing. “It wasn’t just that I was blaming the media,” Hart recalled when we talked this week. “It was that I was a bad guy, and it was good riddance to a bad politician.”

For 29 years after that moment, until I directed him to it this week, even Hart hadn’t watched that video clip. Nor did he bother to continue pressing his case, despite a stream of offers to give speeches or appear on talk shows.

“I was not put on earth to pick a fight with the media and carry it out,” he told me. “I couldn’t repeat the theme of that talk without the headline inevitably saying, ‘Hart attacks the press,’ and I just didn’t want to do that for the rest of my life.

“There was no capacity for thoughtful reflection,” Hart said. “It was all me versus them.”

By the time I got into the business of political journalism in the late 1990s, 24-hour cable news — mindless, sensational, personality-obsessed — was driving the conversation. Then came the Internet, with its frenzied competition for clicks. By 2007, Politico (which does some excellent work, to be fair) was calling itself the ESPN of news, which is pretty much exactly what Hart had prophesied.

And so we systematically created a process perfectly suited to a manipulative, reality-TV performer like Trump (or Sarah Palin before him) — and just as hostile to a guy like John Kasich, who talks about governing as complicated work. We spend half of any given debate talking about poll numbers and strategies, mean tweets and sordid allegations, because the game of politics is so much more alluring than the practice of statecraft.

I asked Hart if, on a week like this one, when battery charges against Trump’s campaign manager were vying for airtime against his war with Ted Cruz over their spouses, he felt vindicated at last.

“No,” he said quickly. “No. No.” After all, he explained, no one (other than me) ever saw the need to revisit what he said all those years ago.

I raise the Hart video this week because if you read this latest flood of self-criticism, some of it from commentators who have worked in our business for decades, you might come away thinking that something transformative has just taken us by surprise. You might get the impression that a tsunami of triviality has suddenly overwhelmed our media, and we barely had time to suck in air and duck our heads.

But don’t let anyone tell you that this is all just about Trump’s suckering us, or about some convergence of recent trends we couldn’t have foreseen. It is, in fact, a generational reckoning — the failure of executives and anchors and reporters-turned-cable-personalities, many of them in our most serious news outlets, who for decades refused to confront the creeping realities of their industry, as surely as a generation of political leaders refused to confront the realities of fiscal and global instability.

Leslie Moonves, the chairman of CBS, did a pretty nice job of encapsulating that failure when he talked about Trump’s campaign this way last month: “It may not be good for America, but it’s damn good for CBS.”

We can say, as Moonves surely would, that we were just responding to market forces beyond our control. We can say that voters, and not us, get to decide what matters and what doesn’t. We can point out that we’ve gone to great lengths to expose the depth of Trump’s ignorance and inconsistency.

What we can’t say is that we weren’t told it would happen.
