Another neurological disorder tied to Zika

By Dennis Thompson, HealthDay News | March 9, 2016 at 8:36 PM

WEDNESDAY, March 9, 2016 -- The list of neurological disorders potentially associated with the Zika viruscontinues to grow, health officials reported Wednesday.

Writing in the Wednesday online edition of the New England Journal of Medicine, French researchers described the case of an unidentified 81-year-old man who had been in fine health before becoming feverish and then comatose while on a cruise in the South Pacific.

An MRI scan and a test of spinal fluid indicated he was suffering from meningoencephalitis, an infection and swelling of the brain.

The elderly cruise ship patient was admitted to an intensive care unit, where doctors were able to make a tentative diagnosis of Zika infection. Within several days, his condition began to improve without treatment, and 17 days after admission to the hospital he was removed from intensive care. By day 38, he was fully recovered, the investigators said in their report.

Previous research has suggested that the mosquito-transmitted Zika virus also appears to be linked to microcephaly, a birth defect that causes babies to be born with unusually small heads and underdeveloped brains. The virus has also been linked to Guillain-Barre syndrome, an immune system disorder that can occasionally lead to a fatal form of paralysis.

The virus is suspected of causing the epidemic that began last spring in Brazil, where there have been more than 5,600 suspected or confirmed cases of microcephaly. And the virus is spreading in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The man's story and his recovery would seem to reinforce doctors' belief that Zika is most dangerous to a pregnant woman and her fetus. Only 1 out of every 5 people infected with Zika show any symptoms, and even those who fall ill usually do not suffer severe symptoms, U.S. health officials have said.

Nonetheless, the World Health Organization said in the journal that, despite the lack of proof linking Zika virus with neurological disorders, "the severe potential risks demand decisive, immediate action to protect public health."

The WHO recommends such preventive measures as intensive mosquito control; personal protection against mosquito bites; appropriate medical care for all patients with Guillain-Barre syndrome; and proper care for women before, during and after pregnancy.

The United Nations-affiliated agency is also calling for prevention of Zika virus infection through blood transfusion or sexual contract, which seems more likely than had been previously thought.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has warned pregnant women to refrain from unprotected sex with a partner who has traveled to a Zika-affected region.

For pregnant women, the CDC has this advice:

  • Consider postponing travel to any area where Zika virus transmission is ongoing,
  • If you must travel to or live in one of these areas, talk to your healthcare provider first, and strictly follow steps to prevent mosquito bites,
  • If you have a male partner who lives in or has traveled to an area where Zika transmission is ongoing, either use condoms the right way, every time or do not have sex during your pregnancy.

The Zika virus has now spread to over 32 countries and territories in Latin America and the Caribbean. The WHO estimates there could be up to 4 million cases of Zika in the Americas in the next year.

Last week, researchers reported that the Zika virus may cause the birth defect microcephaly by targeting certain brain stem cells and stunting their growth.

Laboratory studies indicated that Zika can infect a type of neural stem cell that gives rise to the cerebral cortex of the brain, researchers reported in the journal Cell Stem Cell.

Worse, Zika appears to hijack these cells, using them to churn out new copies of the virus and spread more rapidly, the researchers reported.

According to the researchers, the Zika virus flourished in lab dishes containing these stem cells, causing either cell death or disruption of cell growth.

"Although our study hasn't provided a direct link between Zika virus and microcephaly, we identify the direct cell targets of the virus and we show the virus can affect cell growth," said study co-author Zhexing Wen, a postdoctoral fellow at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore.

The new findings "provide a potential mechanism [for] how a Zika virus infection can lead to poor brain growth and, therefore, microcephaly," said Dr. Sallie Permar, director of Duke University's Laboratory of Neonatal Viral Pathogen Immunity, in Durham, N.C.

A cartoon image from March 2016 depicts Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump looking across a scene of Jesus Christ nailed to a cross, while holding a hammer in his hand and declaring “I don’t like losers.”

A New Zealand Presbyterian church has blasted Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump with an Easter billboard depicting Trump calling Jesus a "loser" at the crucifixion.

The Community of Saint Luke in Remuera also made the point of calling out Trump's constant depictions of himself as a "winner," while calling others "losers," by reminding Christians that Christ was rejected by society and died broke without any money.

"For those of us at St Luke's, the cross is about politics. Jesus was killed – violently, publically and shamefully – because he spoke truth to power and confronted the leaders of his day about their treatment of the outcasts," said Glynn Cardy, a minister at Saint Luke's.

"To the Trumps of his day, and to those who see winners as having money and power, the Jesus of the Bible was a loser who associated with those rejected by society. And he died broke," Cardy added.

"Jesus had an alternative vision of reality, however. He was a person who sided with minorities and those who were most vulnerable, and it was this that got him killed."

The billboard in question shows Trump holding a hammer looking on at Christ nailed to the cross, saying "I don't like losers."

Cardy argued that Trump's stances on Muslims, Mexicans and women are offensive to Christianity, and noted that the ad will stay up throughout the Church's Lenten and Easter season.

Trump, the current GOP frontrunner, has insisted that he is a Christian and part of the Presbyterian denomination on a number of occasions.

He has called various people "losers" throughout his business and campaigns career, including his election rivals, such as former Florida governor Jeb Bush, who has since dropped out.

Trump has been called out by fellow Republicans for some of his most controversial comments, such as suggesting that Arizona Senator John McCain is not a war hero "because he was captured" and spent five years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam.

Bush and former Texas Governor Rick Perry both spoke out against Trump's suggestion, with the former writing:

"Enough with the slanderous attacks. @SenJohnMcCain and all our veterans – particularly POWs have earned our respect and admiration."

Trump later defended his remarks by stating that he was trying to give credit to other soldiers who served well in the war but were not captured, and are eventually forgotten.

It is not the first time Trump has seemingly been targeted by a Presbyterian church, as he attended a church service in Iowa in January where the preacher gave a sermon about taking care of Syrian and Mexican migrants.

"Jesus is teaching us today that he has come for those who are outside of the church," said the Rev. Dr. Pamela Saturnia of Muscataine's First Presbyterian Churchat.

Saturnia called for healing and acceptance for "those who are the most unloved, the most discriminated against, the most forgotten in our community and in our world."

After the service, Trump admitted that part of the sermon may have indeed been aimed at him.

"I don't know if that was aimed at me … perhaps," he said.

Russia Warns North Korea Nuclear Rhetoric Could Create Grounds For Invasion

RUSS READ
National Security/Foreign Policy Reporter

North Korea’s provocative nuclear rhetoric has gotten so bad even the Kremlin has come out against the hermit kingdom, warning continued nuclear threats could justify an invasion.

The warning was issued in the form of a written statement from the Russian foreign ministry. It follows North Korea’s threat it would engage in a “preemptive and offensive nuclear strike” in reaction to the start of joint U.S.-South Korean war games Monday.

“We consider it to be absolutely impermissible to make public statements containing threats to deliver some ‘preventive nuclear strikes’ against opponents,” said the statement, as translated by the Russian TASS news agency. “Pyongyang should be aware of the fact that in this way the DPRK [North Korea] will become fully opposed to the international community and will create international legal grounds for using military force against itself in accordance with the right of a state to self-defense enshrined in the United Nations Charter.”

Russia also had harsh words for the U.S. and South Korea, condemning the “unprecedented” exercises. “The development of the situation on the Korean peninsula and around it is causing growing concern,” said a statement issued Monday, as reported by the Kremlin-funded RT news channel.

Part of the planned war games involved the U.S. and South Korea simulating strikes against North Korea’s nuclear facilities and special forces raids against Pyongyang leadership. Around 17,000 U.S. personnel and 300,000 South Korean personnel are participating in the ongoing eight-week war game. The troop levels represent about a one-third increase from last year’s similar war game.

North Korea’s sabre-rattling has reached a fever pitch in recent months. The pariah state carried out its fourth nuclear test in January and launched a rocket in violation of international sanctions in February. Director of National Intelligence James Clapper warned Congress in early February that North Korea had restarted its plutonium reactor and was poised to produce weapons-grade nuclear material within weeks.

In response to North Korean provocations, the United Nations security council voted unanimously last Thursday to pass a new round of sanctions against the country.

SWEDEN WARNS WOMEN NOT TO GO OUT ALONE AFTER DARK: “THIS IS SERIOUS”

As you might have noticed, Europe is falling apart

Zero Hedge - MARCH 9, 2016

As you might have noticed, Europe is falling apart.

Some manner of ambiguous “deal” with the Turks notwithstanding, the EU is going to collapse under the weight of the millions of asylum seekers that have inundated the bloc over the past 12 months.

At this juncture, the so-called Balkan Route has for all intents and purposes been closed (Angela Merkel’s protestations aside). This has left Greece in a terribly precarious situation. Tens of thousands of migrants are stuck now that Macedonia has sealed its borders, and barring some kind of dramatic breakthrough, Alexis Tsipras is going to watch as his country descends into chaos for the second time in 18 months.

But while multiple countries have now suspended the bloc’s beloved Schengen in an effort to “stop the madness,” as it were, it’s too late to stop the chaos. As we’ve documented extensively, Europe was remarkably resilient in the wake of the Paris attacks, but after New Year’s Eve, when (rightly or wrongly) adult male Mid-East asylum seekers garnered a reputation for sexual assault, sentiment soured. Markedly.

Since then, the entirety of the EU has been on high alert. Not for terrorists, but for sexual predators of “foreign origin.”

One particularly divisive issue is the extent to which officials have tended to “blame the victim”, so to speak. For instance, Cologne mayor Henriette Reker drew sharp criticism for suggesting that it was German womens’ duty to prevent assaults by keeping would-be assailants “at arm’s length.”

Then there was the now infamous case of the 17-year-old Danish girl who faced a fine from police after she allegedly used “illegal” pepper spray to deter an attacker.

Well, in the latest example of authorities suggesting that Europeans should adapt to threats rather than compelling authorities to protect citizens, police in Östersund advised women not to walk around by themselves at night, during at press conference on Monday.

“Women in a town in northern Sweden have been warned not to walk alone at night in the wake of a spike in violent assaults and attempted rapes,” The Daily Mail writes. “Police in Östersund made the unusual move to ask women not to go out unaccompanied after dark, after reports of eight brutal attacks, some by ‘men of foreign appearance’, in just over two weeks.” Here’s more:

It is extremely unusual for Swedish authorities to make such warnings, and it has not been well received in Sweden, a country proud of its progress in gender equality and women’s rights.

All incidents have taken place in Östersund since the 20th of February, and involved outdoor attacks where the perpetrators have been unknown to their female victims.

A police spokesperson added that in addition to the increased frequency, the attacks are also conspicuous as – despite being carried out late at night – none of the perpetrators were drunk.

Yes, sober potential rapists! Now that is alarming.

“What stands out is also that none of these perpetrators have been under the influence,” regional police chief Stephen Jerand told Sveriges Television.

No, Stephen, what “stands out” is that there are gangs of men raping unaccompanied women in the streets of Östersund. Whether they are drunk or not is entirely irrelevant.

In any event, Swedes weren’t happy with the suggestion that women should stay off the streets at night. Here’s The Local:

The force’s recommendation that women should avoid being alone at night swiftly prompted criticism in Sweden, a nation that prides itself on promoting gender equality.

“The solution can never be to not go out because of such a warning. We have very many women who work in home and social care at night for example. What are they supposed to do?” the city’s mayor Ann-Sofie Andersson told Swedish broadcaster SVT.

The politician, who represents the government’s Social Democrat party at a regional level, said she wished police had told her about their intentions before issuing the warning.

“It’s wrong if it calls on women to adapt to the criminals. It risks leading people the wrong way, if the victims must adapt to the perpetrators,” he said.

Fair enough, but police say their warning was taken out of context.

“We are not limiting anyone’s freedom. This is purely factual information,” the police chief told the TT news agency. “This is serious, we care about the protection of women and that is why we are going out and talking about this.”

Essentially, the police are admitting that they are essentially powerless to stop this. Is it better that they come clean and warn the populace or pretend that they can protect the citizenry when they in fact cannot?

And who here, ultimately, is at fault? It’s certainly not the Swedes and it’s probably not the Östersund police who can’t possibly be expected to cope, on short notice, with what’s happening to the country. You could fault Angela Merkel for adopting the “open-door” mirgrant policy, but really, if you want to trace the roots, you might want to ask yourself who destabilized Syria in the first place…

Mysterious 13ft Sea Creature Washes Up On Beach In Mexico

feed_manager_auto_publish_494--autopubtest_WPTUMBLR_485

It looks like something from a terrifying horror movie, but this is the mystery sea creature that’s baffled experts after washing up on a tourist beach in Mexico.

The monstrous 4-metre (13-foot-long) beast was discovered on Bonfil Beach, in the city of Acapulco, in the south-west Mexican state of Guerrero.

Stunned beach-goers stood around the beast and began taking photos - while also speculating on the possible species of the creature.

The creature’s body was washed on the shore by strong currents that have been affecting parts of the Mexican coast.

Rosa Comacho, the coordinator of the Civil Guard and Fire Brigade believes the animal had not been dead for a long time - but it has started to rapidly decay.

She said: ‘We have no idea what type of animal this is, but I do know that it does not smell bad or have a fetid aroma.

‘It is four metres long and was found on Bonfil Beach.’

The photos of the mysterious creature have since provoked huge debate online - with some suggesting that it might be a type of giant squid, while others have suggested that it is a whale.
