Markets in TURMOIL: European stocks plunge amid fears of an EU without Britain

MARKETS are in turmoil amid the uncertainty over Britain's place in Europe, with investor fears quickly rising over how the continent would cope after a Brexit.

Fears are rising over how Europe would cope without Britain

Britain's upcoming in-out vote on Europe has today started to weigh on markets, with the FTSE 100 falling by 1.5 per cent this morning.

But Europe's top markets are taking a bigger hit, amid fears Britain's exit from Europe would have significant consequences for the union.

Germany's top market the DAX plunged by 2.4 per cent, while France's CAC dropped by 2.17 per cent and Spain's IBE was down by 2.6 per cent.

Michael Hewson, chief market analyst at trading platform CMC Markets, said: "The belief that the Euro area can carry on regardless is to coin a phrase used by the Prime Minister recently “for the birds”.

"The effect on confidence in Europe could shatter as well, if the continents second largest economy concludes the current arrangement is unworkable, and votes to leave.

"This ought to be something European politicians should consider when they talk about the consequences of a UK exit, as there will be consequences for European cohesion as well."

France's CAC has also plunged today

Britain is this year contributing a massive £13.7billion to the EU, based on the size of the economy, as well as an extra £2.3bn payment as a share of VAT receipts.

In the event of a Brexit, the union could struggle to plug this hole in its finances - especially as the UK's economy is predicted to grow by 2.1 per cent this year, whereas Europe's biggest economy Germany has forecasted growth of just 1.3 per cent.

Employment in Britain is also at a record high with unemployment continuing to fall below pre-crisis levels.

In comparison, unemployment is ravaging the Eurozone in 2016, while a number of countries including Italy, Greece and Portugal show more signs of bucking under the weight of their ginormous debts.

High winds and seven tornadoes slammed through the American South on Tuesday afternoon, killing two in Louisiana and another in Mississippi, while injuring at least 31 people and damaging dozens of homes and cars. The storm was part of a severe weather front moving across the southern states.

High winds and several tornadoes hit the Pelican state on Tuesday afternoon. One tornado came close to New Orleans Airport before touching down in a field, according to the Associated Press.

At Sugar Hill trailer park in Convent Parish, dozens of trailers were damaged and several people were injured, AP cited the park owner, Mark Anderson as saying.

Convent Parish Sheriff Willy Martin told local news that there had been two confirmed fatalities, adding that at least 31 people had been injured, and seven to eight critically.

Hear from Sheriff Martin says search still underway at RV/Trailer Park right now.

Trees were toppled over by the ravaging winds and only about six to eight trailers were left standing, Anderson told AP.

Authorities said there were reports of people possibly trapped in some of the trailers or under debris.

As weather maps showed a big red swath marking the storm’s direction across the state, warnings were issued alerting people to seek shelter. Weather officials were tracking more than a dozen reports of tornadoes in the region.

A TORNADO WARNING is in effect for the area(s) outlined below. Take shelter NOW! Details at http://www.wwltv.com

Tornadoes ripped roofs off buildings, flipped trucks, and tore down the wall of a Baptist church.

Some 31,000 customers have reportedly been left without power statewide, with crews working to restore it as quickly as possible.

Unbelievable.

In Prairieville, between New Orleans and Baton Rouge, there was damage to some buildings, and the roof of a fitness center was ripped off.

In neighboring Mississippi, Governor Phil Bryant had declared a state of emergency in anticipation of severe weather. State authorities said that one person had died.

More than 6 million people in parts of five states – Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida and Georgia – were in areas of moderate risk for strong tornadoes and other severe weather on Tuesday, the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma estimated.

UN aid convoys head to two Syrian besieged towns

U.N. aid convoys headed to two Syrian towns besieged by government forces on Tuesday to deliver life-saving food and medicine to some 30,000 people, a U.N. spokesman said.

The deliveries to the towns of Moadamiyeh and Kafr Batna, near Damascus, came after aid reached five besieged towns last week, part of a major push to reach civilians facing starvation.

“These are the first of what we hope to be a series of deliveries to meet the needs of people that humanitarian workers have not been able to reach for a long time,” said U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric.

The convoys carried enough food and medical supplies to help some 20,000 people in Moadamiyeh and 10,000 in Kafr Batna, he said.

The humanitarian aid came a day after the United States and Russia agreed on a cessation of hostilities as of Saturday that could pave the way to more deliveries.

The United Nations is calling on all sides to lift starvation sieges across Syria, where it estimates that 487,000 people live, although some non-governmental organizations say the figure is much higher.

Last week, 114 trucks loaded with food and other basic goods reached 80,000 people in five besieged areas.

The United Nations is calling for “unconditional, unimpeded and sustained access” to all hard-to-reach areas, said Dujarric.

More than 260,000 people have died in Syria’s conflict, which began in March 2011 with anti-government protests but has since imploded into a multi-sided proxy war.

ISIS THREATENS FACEBOOK’S MARK ZUCKERBERG AND TWITTER’S JACK DORSEY
BY ON 2/25/16 AT 8:15 AM

Hackers aligned with the Islamic State militant group (ISIS) threatened Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey in a new video on Wednesday, railing against the social media companies war on its propaganda.

The 25-minute film, uncovered by deep
web company Vocativ, displays images of Zuckerberg and Dorsey with bullet holes over their faces. ISIS hackers naming themselves “the sons of the Caliphate army” published the video, in which they purport to hack Facebook and Twitter accounts, changing users’ profile pictures and publishing ISIS-related propaganda on the platforms.

“You announce daily that you suspend many of our accounts, and to you we say: Is that all you can do? You are not in our league,” text on the video reads. “If you close one account we will take 10 in return and soon your names will be erased after we delete your sites, Allah willing, and will know that we say is true.”

The hacker arm of ISIS claims to have hacked 10,000 Facebook accounts, 150 Facebook groups and 5,000 Twitter accounts, which they say “have been given to supporters.”

According to a
new report released last week, the group’s success at spreading English-language propaganda on Twitter is faltering in the wake of a crackdown. Earlier this month, the social media company announced that since mid-2015 more than 125,000 accounts linked to extremists had been removed. The decision on which accounts to block was based on a mixture of human judgment and technology.

“We condemn the use of Twitter to promote violent terrorism,” the company said in a statement on February 5. “This type of behavior, or any violent threats, is not permitted on our service.”

As well as a crackdown by social media companies against ISIS, governments are taking action online also. In November, Britain’s Chancellor George Osborne said that the country’s cyber-security services are developing the capabilities to conduct electronic attacks against ISIS in order to damage the militant group’s recruitment networks and communications.

ISIS has conducted a number of cyber attacks with minimal success. Last year, the ISIS-linked “cyber caliphate” hacked
Newsweek ’s Twitter account, changing its profile picture and background image.

The radical Islamist group’s hackers have also
sparred with hacktivist group Anonymous, calling the group’s members “idiots” and have joined forces with pro-Palestinian hacker group AnonGhost, announcing the formation of a new hacking organization Ghost Caliphate last month.

With new law, U.S. takes on slavery by banning forced labor imports

NEW YORK (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - President Barack Obama signed a bill on Wednesday barring the import of goods produced by forced labor from entering the United States, throwing the weight of the U.S. market into the fight against global slavery.

Shipments derived from slavery, from fish to electronics and cocoa, will be kept out of the country under the new law that closes a legal loophole that allowed import of goods derived from forced labor if U.S. demand exceeded domestic production, officials said.

The measure closing the loophole from the Tariff Act of 1930 was included in a wider trade enforcement bill, which Obama signed into law at the White House in Washington.

“The mere deterrent effect of closing this loophole is a great step forward," Gil Kerlikowske, commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, told reporters on a conference call. "We're going to make sure that is heavily noted throughout the world.”

The new law could keep at bay billions of dollars worth of goods produced by forced labor, said Annick Febrey, senior associate at the advocacy group Human Rights First.

"It's a really big deal," she said. "While we as a country have said that we are against slavery, we've had this little-known rule in the Tariff Act."

The International Labour Organization estimates that 20.9 million people are victims of forced labor globally.

The illegal industry is estimated to generate $150 billion in profits per year, the agency has said.

Implementation of earlier U.S. anti-slavery measures faltered due to a need to determine if demand exceeded domestic production, Febrey said.

Enforcement of the new law should benefit from data from the U.S. Department of Labor, which has been listing goods, classified by nation, that are likely made by forced labor, officials said.

Only a few countries have laws addressing forced labor goods, including Canada where prison-labor imports are illegal and Australia where financial benefits from forced labor are outlawed, according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
