Saudis Say Assad Must Go, Deploy Jets to Turkey: Joint Turkish-Saudi Assault on Syria Now Imminent

Peace is off the table in Syria. The US is escalating the conflict via its client states

The Saudis are coming -- and expect Turkey, too

There will be no peace in Syria.

Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir announced yesterday that for The Kingdom, the removal of Assad is "crucial," adding without any sense of shame that the Syrian leader is the "single most effective magnet for extremists and terrorists in the region".

This is not a rogue statement made by a renegade government: It's a policy that has been approved, and most likely dictated, by the United States. And now the Saudis have parked their F-15s at a Turkish airbase used by the US military to strike targets within Syria:

Royal Saudi Air Force F-15 Eagles arrive at Incirlik Air Base, Turkey.

Turkey has openly acknowledged that it is working with the Saudis on a joint attack plan.Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu has already made this clear:

"If we have such a strategy, then Turkey and Saudi Arabia may launch a ground operation,” he added, fueling concerns that a foreign troop invasion may soon further complicate the already turbulent situation in the war-torn country.

Earlier, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and the UAE voiced their readiness to contribute troops for a ground operation in Syria on the condition that the US would lead the intervention. Damascus and its key regional ally, Iran, warned that such a foreign force would face strong resistance.

Of course, both Turkey and Saudi Arabia insist that their strikes will be aimed at ISIS -- perhaps one of the most cynical, laughable claims made since the start of the Syrian conflict. As Slavoj Žižek argues, "The so-called 'war on terror' has become a clash within each civilisation, in which every side pretends to fight Isis in order to hit its true enemy."

The US will likely avoid direct involvement, but Washington is already hard at work behind the scenes: Even with many supply lines cut, the CIA is working overtime to resupply the "moderate" rebels with weapons.

Ankara says Turkey and Saudi Arabia could launch anti-IS ground operation in Syria

With each passing day, the possibility of a direct military confrontation between Russia and the US (or at least its allies) seems more and more likely. The first F-15 to be shot down by a Syrian or Russian jet (or anti-air system such as the S-400), could mark the beginning of all-out war. Which is exactly what Washington appears to want.

Turkish, Saudi troops in Syria would be ‘catastrophic’

Where will the Turkish announcement about Saudis sending their troops to a Turkish airbase and planning a ground operation in Syria lead? RT asked experts about the effects of such an operation.

Turkey confirmed that Saudi Arabia will send military personnel and fighter jets to Turkey’s Incirlik base located on the Syrian border to fight ISIS. Turkey's Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu also said Saturday that both Ankara and Riyadh are ready to launch a ground operation in Syria. The announcement came shortly after the Munich Security Conference, where major powers made a decision to implement the so-called “cessation of hostilities” in Syria. Reportedly, the agreement will come into force only next week. The parties also agreed to provide access to humanitarian aid in the conflict areas.

Political commentator Marwa Osman shared her opinion on this issue with RT.

RT: Both Saudi Arabia and Turkey say they want the removal of the Syrian president. If they are to defeat Islamic State, what are they actually aiming to achieve with this possible ground incursion into Syria?

Marwa Osman: First of all, let us ask why this ground incursion is to be taking place right now or in a couple of weeks. Why now, not four years ago, or two years ago, or when Russia began its intervention inside Syria? It is happening now because of the Aleppo gains for the Syrian Arab Army along with its allies and with the Russian army as well, in the air bombing the sites of ISIS and the sites of other terrorist groups. That is why they are very much concerned about getting their planes right now and getting their soldiers right now on the ground in Syria. But there is a big difference between getting the planes in the air and getting the soldiers – having their boots on Syrian soil.

When we listen to the Turkish Foreign Minister and also to the military spokespeople – for example, Saudi [Ahmed] Al-Assiri, spokesperson for the military – when they say that we have to take out Assad first in order to take ISIS out – that is just complete nonsense... The Syrian Arab Army, which is led by President Bashar al-Assad, is the only force on the ground along with their allies who are fighting ISIS. You want to try and weaken the only system that is fighting ISIS? What kind of fight that would be? What kind of war would that be? They obviously are in paranoia for losing some parts of Aleppo for the sake of the Syrian Arab Army. They are obviously very much aggravated and frustrated about the fact that Russia has managed to stop the rout of the insurgents to the terrorists inside of Syria that are coming from Turkey.

Erdogan has time and again said that Russia has been taking the lead and he doesn’t like it. And now we hear the foreign minister saying that they might start some sort of invasion inside of Syria. But that would not be very easy. And I don’t think that the US is ready for this right now, because of what we have heard in Munich. We heard [John] Kerry and we heard Sergey Lavrov as well, saying that they might have complete certain agreement to have a ceasefire within a week or so. But again, who will control the people on the ground? If the Russian side has the agreement from the Syrian government, who will control ISIS, or who will control the other terrorists? The West is there to control it. Then we have big questions here: Why are they able to pressure them and control them and not be able to stop them from terrorizing people…

Again, the main question is: Why now? – Obviously, Aleppo. Will it happen? Well, two weeks is very short. We will know very soon. But if it happens, it will be catastrophic, not only obviously for the Syrian public, because they have been lost a lot of lives, they’ve been sacrificing for the past five years. But it will be a major mistake, a big mistake for Turkey and for Saudi Arabia, because we have Russia there, we have the allies of the Syrian Arab Army there, which are Iran and Hezbollah. It will be a battle that will not end unless bloodshed is spilled. It is very scary and very risky at the same time.

‘Dichotomy in Washington’

This new development might be harmful for the "cessation of hostilities" agreed upon in Munich, says Catherine Shakdam, director of programs at the Shafaqna Institute of Middle Eastern Studies in London.

But that’s kind of the point,” she added. “The Saudis are now trying to enter the fray” and to force the US to “back its move in Syria.”

US Secretary of State John Kerry, speaking at the Munich Security Conference, warned against any destabilizing actions. But it’s now a question whether Turkey – a NATO member – and Saudi Arabia, a US ally, will listen to Washington.

Catherine Shakdam: Washington for the longest time has had this idea that it could control Saudi Arabia. Now that is the other way around. The Saudi are quite clearly are controlling Washington, and only because they have immense pressure that they could exert in terms of Washington’s financial health. They need and they rely on the oil coming from Saudi Arabia. There is a big problem for Washington. Then again you have this Saudi lobby, which is basically financing and buying off politicians in Washington. So their interest is aligning not with what is good for the American people, but only what is good for their own pocket.

I think you have now the dichotomy in Washington, where you have people, maybe like Mr. [John] Kerry, who are starting to realize that Saudi Arabia is not a good thing for America, not a good thing for the world and of course for the Middle East. And others who are quite willing to sell their soul to the devil, quite literally, trying to say: “Hey, it doesn’t matter as long as we make money – who cares?” But you should care.

Saudi Arabia is creating this grand terror army. If you think they are going to stop at the Middle East, you need to think again. They are trying to carry the same narrative in Yemen; they are trying to do the same thing in Bahrain; they are trying to do the same thing everywhere. And this idea that Mr. Kerry mentioned about this grand divide between Sunni and Shia world – it’s nonsense, it doesn’t exist. What you have is a fighting between Wahhabism and Islam. It has nothing to do with Sunni and Shia, because as you could see on the ground, both Sunni and Shia are dying together. So it makes absolutely no sense to say that there is a sectarian war. The only reason there is a sectarian narrative now coming out of Riyadh and Turkey – it is because it is fitting those very powers to talk about this. But on the ground it doesn’t exist. There is no such thing as sectarian divide in the Middle East. What you have is Wahhabism; what you have is terrorism.

The statements, views and opinions expressed in this column are solely those of the author and do not necessarily represent those of RT.

More than 4 billion people suffer from sever water scarcity: New study

Sat Feb 13, 2016 2:42AM

A new research shows that about two-thirds of the world population are facing sever freshwater scarcity.

Around two-thirds of the world population suffer from sever freshwater scarcity, a situation far more dangerous than previously thought, a new study says.

In an article published in the journal Science Advances on Friday, a team of two scientists from the University of Twente in Netherlands warned that over four billion people across the globe live under conditions of sever water shortage for at least one month of the year, adding that half of these people live in India and China.

The study also shows that some 500 million people live in regions where water consumption is twice as much as the amount received through precipitation during the entire year, leaving them highly vulnerable as natural underground reservoirs increasingly run down.

Researchers further warned that these water problems tend to worsen as the world population soars and water consumption, particularly intensified through meat-eating, is increasing.

“Taking a shorter shower is not the answer” to the global problem, said professor Arjen Hoekstra, one of the authors of the research, since just one to four percent of a person’s water footprint is in the home, while 25 percent is via meat consumption. “It takes over 15,000 liters of water to make one kilogram of beef, with almost all of that used to irrigate the crops fed to the cattle,” he explained.

According to Hoekstra, many other countries, including Pakistan, Iran, Mexico, and Saudi Arabia, are living on borrowed time, as their natural underground reservoirs of freshwater are increasingly depleting. The research further revealed that water problem in Yemen is very acute as the impoverished country of the Arabian Peninsula could run out of water within a few years.

Authors suggested that “putting caps to water consumption by river basin, increasing water-use efficiencies, and better sharing of the limited freshwater resources will be key in reducing the threat posed by water scarcity on biodiversity and human welfare”.

Tens of Thousands of Sharks Spotted 'A Stone's Throw' From Florida Beaches

Tens of Thousands of Sharks Spotted 'A Stone's Throw' From Florida Beaches

The severe cold snap may have you planning your Florida getaway, but you might want to watch this video first.

Researchers flying above the Sunshine State's Atlantic coast on Friday spotted a massive migration of black tip sharks swimming uncomfortably close to popular beaches.

"There are literally tens of thousands of sharks a stone's throw away from our shoreline," You could throw a pebble and literally strike a shark. They are that close," said Florida Atlantic University biological sciences professor Dr. Stephen Kajiura.

Kajiura is part of a team that's researchers who tag and observe the blacktips in an attempt to better understand their migration habits. He told WPEC that the blacktip sharks were densest across the 20 mile stretch from highly populated Palm Beach to Singer Island, Florida.

While the blacktip has never been connected to a single fatal attack, scientists believe they are likely to blame for most shark bite incidents in Florida due to their prevalence in the waters off the coast of the state.

Those who'd like to plan their trip around this migration event, take note: the sharks will likely be sticking around in Palm Beach County for the next month or so.

Or, just take your chances. Kajiura doesn't believe beachgoers should be too concerned--though his reasoning might not convince everyone.

"Even though we have this huge number of sharks...we have relatively few bites," the researcher told the Palm Beach Daily News. "When you consider the number of people in the water and the number of sharks in the water you’d think there would be a lot of interaction."

WHY ISRAEL IS STATE FIGHTING THE INDIGENOUS PALESTINIANS

BY

Women mourn during the funeral of Palestinian Ahmed Zakarna in the West Bank town of Qabatya, February 5, 2016. Zakarna and two other Palestinians killed an Israeli border policewoman and seriously wounded another before being shot dead by officers, Israeli police said. REUTERS/MOHAMAD TOROKMAN

A 15-year-old girl lies severely wounded, bleeding from multiple bullet wounds on the sidewalk. A man walks up and cold-bloodedly shoots her in the head, a final and fatal shot ending a young life on a Jerusalem sidewalk. Another "terrorist" shot by a "hero". Or is it yet another extra judicial execution of the type we have become so used to?

Even the language has changed: "neutralized" is the media term for a human life ended. A Palestinian life that is.

We are no longer capable of seeing the horrific tragedy of the bloodied school uniform, the bag of books and decorated notice-pads scattered about on the pavement. And among all these, also a small pair of scissors with which the girl had attempted to stab an elderly man.

And there she lies, another nameless "terrorist", another young victim born to
the daily reality of the occupation with its night raids, its oppression and humiliation, its discriminatory (security) wall, its home demolitions, its roads for Israelis only, its roadblocks, its church and mosque burnings. Its random shootings by settlers and security forces. A daily life, grey and lacking all hope.

I do not wish to justify these desperate acts; every death under occupation should be avoided. These children are not part of a political movement but they are a result of a well-organized oppression. They are as much the victims as the victims of their desperate acts.

The Jerusalem police are refusing to return the bodies of the Palestinians involved in individual acts, and killed during the last several months. It is a form of punishment for their families. Ten bodies are currently being held. The police are insisting on night funerals with no more than 50 people present to which the families have agreed, but still the bodies have not been released. Kept in their frozen prison, they have become pawns in an ugly political game.

Three Israeli lawmakers, Jamal Zahalka, Basal Ghatas and myself met last week with representatives from these 10 families and their lawyers in order to try and advance the burial of their sons. Prior to this meeting, we had been in contact with the Minister of Homeland Security and afterwards we submitted a written request to the minister with details of all 10 families and the conditions the police have set out for their sons' funerals. At the onset of the meeting with the families, which took place in a cultural space in East Jerusalem, we read the opening stanza of the Koran in silence, a religious and cultural custom.

However, Netanyahu used our act as a pretext for a hate campaign which has led to our suspension from the Israeli parliament (the Knesset) for several months. We have been branded as traitors or worse. In Israel democracy implies the sovereignty of the majority, while lacking recognition of human and minority rights. The danger of tyranny by majority is inbuilt, as it were.

This campaign does not stand by itself: the declaration of the Northern Branch of the Islamic Movement as an illegal organization, the NGO law which severely limits the ability of human rights organizations to function, the military censorship of websites, the pre-emptive arrests of political activists prior to demonstrations, the laws criminalizing the support for the
global Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement (BDS), several laws enabling communities to refuse entry to Arabs as well as other laws legalizing discrimination in the field of land ownership, construction rights and more, may all be viewed as clear indicators of the willingness to adopt discriminatory policies to fight against the country's indigenous people and their supporters.

"Self-defense"' is the expression the Israelis use in order to justify any extra-judiciary executions as well as their control over others' lives. However, there can be no justification for killing, nor for oppression. The occupier does not have the right to self-defense. We, the occupied, have the full and only right to fight it, by all means recognized within the framework of international law and supported by the international community.

Our suspension should be seen in the context of the ongoing hostility of the state towards the Palestinians, on one hand, and the increased willingness to adopt un-democratic practices and policies on the other hand. One should realize that the second aspect is a byproduct of the first.

Israel, by its very definition as Jewish state laid the foundation for this, especially because the state saw the Palestinians as strangers in their own homeland. In 1948, 85 percent of the Palestinians were expelled and those who remained were seen as intruders. In spite of the great injustice done to us, we suggest a vision of justice and equality for all.

Haneen Zoabi currently serves as a member of the Israeli Knesset for the Arab Joint List bloc. She is the first woman to be elected to the Israeli parliament on an Arab party’s list.
