Thousands of Iraqis protest against Turkey’s troop deployment in north

Published time: 12 Dec, 2015 21:13

"We consider any military presence on Iraqi land as foreign aggression which we should stand against using all possible means," Hadi al-Amiri, a Shiite lawmaker, who also leads the armed Badr Organisation, said during the rally in Baghdad, as quoted by Reuters.

Demonstrators also trampled on the Turkish flag and hit a caricature of the Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan with slippers as a demonstration of disrespect, Reuters reported.

Several thousands of Iraqis also gathered in the country’s southern city of Basra. The demonstrators also reportedly burned the Turkish flag during the rally. Some Shiite militia members also joined the protests in the city, carrying banners reading “Death to Turkey. Death to Erdogan” and threatening violence against Turkish soldiers unless Turkey’s forces are withdrawn.

"We are on high alert now awaiting orders from our commanders to set fire to the ground beneath the feet of Turkish soldiers," Amjad Salim, a local commander of the Bard Organization in Basra told Reuters.

"If Turkey thinks Iraq is busy with fighting Daesh [Islamic State] and it can seize the opportunity to deploy troops then it should think twice before making such a mistake," said Abu Muntathar al-Moussawi, a local commander of another militia group called Asaib Ahl al-Haq.

In the Iraq’s south-eastern city of Nasiriyah demonstrators called on the country’s Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi and the Defense Minister Khaled al-Obaidi to take a “firm stance” against Turkey’s “aggression,” Press TV reports.

During a protest in the city of al-Diwaniyah in central Iraq, hundreds of people called on the government to expel the Turkish ambassador and break off relations with Ankara.

Earlier on Saturday, al-Abadi once again condemned the deployment of Turkish troops to northern Iraq and stressed that Baghdad regards it not as an anti-terrorist action but as a violation of Iraq’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Tensions between the two countries have increased dramatically since Turkey deployed about 150 soldiers backed by artillery and around 25 tanks to a base near the ISIS-controlled northern Iraqi city of Mosul on December 4.

Turkey has consistently claimed the troops were deployed in order to train local Kurdish Peshmerga forces adding that the move complied with previous agreements between Ankara and Baghdad.

‘Out of question’: rules out Turkish troop withdrawal from Iraq http://on.rt.com/6z6r

Iraqi authorities regard the move a flagrant breach of the country’s sovereignty and repeatedly call on Ankara to withdraw its forces. Baghdad issued an ultimatum demanding that Turkish troops leave its territory but Turkey refused to comply with it.

Iraqi government also appealed to the UN Security Council about Turkish forces’ presence seeking assistance in resolving the crisis.

Erdogan said that Turkish forces withdrawal from Iraq is “out of question” and denounced the Iraqi appeal to the UNSC as “not honest.”

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights is a Tool of Western Propaganda

878675
Since Russia began military operations in Syria against the terrorist proxy forces of NATO and the Gulf states, ubiquitous reports in the Western media have emerged which claim that Russia has killed and targeted civilians. Yet a large proportion of these news organisations that apparently are at the pinnacle of journalism in the West, are publishing reports that are often based on one or two very dubious (to say the least) sources.

No photographs, videos or any actual evidence is provided in a lot of these articles. The presstitutes are so lazy these days they can’t even be bothered manufacturing fake evidence most of the time, they just cite a blog post from what may as well be some random guy on Twitter, and then quote a few Western politicians who want to oust Assad from power in Damascus; and they try and pass that off as professional news gathering. It’s truly a new low for Western mainstream journalism.

One of the most widely cited ‘organizations’ in the Western media pertaining to the Syrian conflict is the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR). As Tony Cartalucci astutely noted back in 2012, in his article: West’s Syrian Narrative Based on “Guy in British Apartment”, the Western media portrays the SOHR as a group of impartial and highly skilled professionals who are based in Syria:

“One would believe this to be a giant sprawling organization with hundreds of members working hard on the ground, documenting evidence in Syria with photographs and video, while coordinating with foreign press to transparently and objectively “observe” the “human rights” conditions in Syria, as well as demonstrate their methodologies. Surely that is the impression the Western media attempts to relay to its readers.”

As usual, the reality of this so-called organization is the complete inversion of the way the mainstream media portrays it. TheSOHR was founded in 2006 by the enigmatic Rami Abdulrahman (also spelled Abdurrahman, but his real name is Ossama Suleiman), who is also the director of the one-man group. He is the only individual publicly listed as working for the SOHR, with even the New York Times admitting in a 2013 article that the SOHR is “virtually a one-man band”.

He apparently relies on four unnamed men inside Syria who assist him, along with over 200 unnamed informants. Obviously, the major problem with these unnamed activists is that they are anonymous, meaning the media has absolutely no idea who these people are, or if they even exist. Are some of these activists members of ISIS or Jabhat al-Nusra? Do they work for MI6 or the CIA? Is the tooth fairy one of his informants? There is no way to verify that Abdulrahman’s informants are authentic, reliable or objective.

Secondly, Abdulrahman is not an impartial individual himself, and is starkly opposed to the Syrian government. He told Reutersin 2012 that he would only return to Syria “when Bashar al-Assad goes”. (It should also be noted that when he was still living in Syria, Abdulrahman supposedly served three brief spells in a Syrian jail for what Reuters called “pro-democracy activism” – you can make of that what you wish).

In 2011, CNN reported that Abdulrahman meet the former Foreign Secretary of Britain, William Hague, in London, as a representative of the Syrian opposition (he was even photographed outside the Foreign & Commonwealth Office). The SOHR clearly has an agenda, and should not be relied on to give impartial reports on the situation in Syria.

Thirdly, Abdulrahman left Syria in 2000 and now lives in Coventry, England! You would think the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights is based in Syria, considering the ‘organization’ supposedly monitors the situation solely in Syria.

Furthermore, the SOHR casualty count for certain periods in the Syrian conflict often differs from the figures calculated by specialists from around the world.

Blatant Propaganda!

Many of the allegations in the Western press that accuse the Russian government of killing civilians are solely based on this one unprofessional and biased source. The International Business Times (IBT) published an article on the 21st of October, titled: Russia in Syria: 370, including civilians killed in Russian airstrikes, says SOHR. The IBT article provides no second source, and merely says “according” to the SOHR.

On the 20th of November 2015, the SOHR released a report which claimed that the Russian air force had killed 403 civilians in Syria, including 166 women and children. In the report, there is absolutely zero evidence to support these claims – literally not a shred of evidence. But that doesn’t stop Western media quoting the SOHR report as proof of civilian casualties however.

The Independent published an article on the 23rd of November with the sensationalist headline: Russian air strikes in Syria ‘have killed 97 children’, monitoring group says. The Independent only cites the SOHR report which has zero evidence in it, and provides no additional evidence to support this accusation, but somehow that passes for journalism in the West – what a joke. The Independent isn’t even a tabloid paper, it’s meant to be a little more respectable than say The Sun.

Other mainstream news outlets such as Reuters, Yahoo News and the New York Times, publish stories which quote this figure of 403 civilians from the SOHR report.

The Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Maria Zakharova, denounced the SOHR in October of this year, when she was responding to allegations widely circulated in the Western media that Russia had bombed a hospital in Northern Syria, killing 13 people. Zakharova stated:

“This information appears with reference to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights based in London. As we all understand, it is very ‘convenient’ to cover and observe what is happening in Syria without leaving London and without the ability to collect information in the field.”

It is obvious to anyone who values real journalism and intellectual honesty, that the SOHR is a joke, and is the antithesis of a reliable and impartial source. For the Western mainstream media however, its legitimate sounding name is an important and useful tool when promulgating war propaganda and disinformation to their ignorant readers.

Russia Urges to Set Up Int’l Tribunal for
Terrorists

SPUTNIK

The time dictates the need to consolidate all countries' efforts in the fight against terrorism and, first of all, against Daesh, a senior Russian official said.

ASHGABAT (Sputnik) — Russia calls for the creation of an international tribunal for the terrorists, as well as the elaboration of measures to prevent terrorist organizations’ funding, Russian upper house speaker Valentina Matvienko said Saturday.

"We call for measures to prevent the financing, arms supply of misanthropic activities and in the long term to agree on international legal proceedings against the terrorists and their accomplices, similar to Nuremberg [Tribunal], so that this never happens again," Matvienko stated, speaking at the international conference ‘Neutrality policy: international cooperation for peace, security and development’ held in Turkmenistan.

According to the lawmaker, the time dictates the need to consolidate all countries' efforts in the fight against terrorism and, first of all, against the Islamic State (IS, or Daesh in Arabic) extremist group, whose activities are prohibited in Russia.

International terrorism jeopardizes the future of the entire civilization, Matvienko warned, adding that the recent tragic events have convincingly demonstrated nobody can feel safe.

"They [extremists and terrorists] have in their plans to promote their expansion into new regions. After the Middle East, the Central Asia falls into the sight of the terrorist organizations, strengthening their positions in Afghanistan," the Federation Council speaker stressed.

IS numbers some 3,000 fighters in Afghanistan highlighting a possibility for deteriorating security on the Afghan-Turkmenistan border, according to mid-October figures released by the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO).

The imminent threat posed by the returning home Central Asian IS extremists having undergone training and combat in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan was emphasized by Kyrgyz Prosecutor General Indira Joldubayeva on November 11.

Water cannons & tear gas deployed in Leipzig, as neo-Nazi demo sparks massive counter rallies

Police have deployed tears gas and water cannon in the German city of Leipzig against crowds of protesters who had been holding a counter rally to a neo-Nazi march. Almost 70 officers were injured as the crowd hurled stones, bottles and fireworks at them.

About 150 members of different far-right organizations marched through the southern part of Leipzig. They included the neo-Nazi party Die Rechte (the Right), xenophobic organization Offensive für Deutschland (OfD) (Offensive for Germany), and a division of the PEGIDA movement called Thugida.

The right-wing march faced large-scale opposition as about a dozen counter-protests organized by different movements and leftist groups were staged in the city, Der Spiegel reports citing local authorities. Thousands of demonstrators joined the counter protests, according to police sources.

Police mobilized about 800 officers to keep control of the situation.

Law enforcers managed to separate the right-wing march and the counter protests, although “massive clashes” broke out between police and the counter protesters.

“Some protesters from a group of about 1,000 people attacked police officers deployed to the scene [in the southern part of the city],”police officials said in a twitter post.

Neonazi-Demonstration setzt sich auf der Kurt-Eisner-Straße in Gang.

Masked men who took part in the counter protests threw stones, bottles and pyrotechnics at police officers forcing them to respond with tear gas, smoke grenades and water cannons, Der Spiegel reports.

Some counter protesters erected barricades on a number of streets and attempted a sit-down demo. Police cleared the protesters after they failed to comply with requests to quit the scene.

Bitte verlasst die Blockade auf der angemeldeter Aufzugsstrecke. Wir hindern Euch nicht aufzustehen.

On some other streets, counter-protesters erected barricades from wood and trash containers and then set them on fire. They also overturned glass containers, broke shop-windows and demolished a bus stop.

The counter-protesters even attacked a contingent of firefighters deployed to deal with the burning barricades.

Meanwhile, a producer from RT’s Ruptly video agency was attacked by police during one of the massive clashes between law enforcement services and counter-protesters.

“Police acted in a very violent and unnecessary way against one or two protesters. A protester was already on the ground and there were still four or five riot police officers banging their batons on him, [while] he seemed unconscious,” said the producer, who wanted to keep their identity concealed for security reasons.

“I tried to film it and two or three riot police officers came running towards me and pushed my camera away. Then [another] guy punched me in the face,” the producer added.

The right-wing demonstration ended peacefully about 4:00pm local time (3:00pm GMT). However, the clashes between police and counter-protesters continued. About 5:00pm local time (4:00pm GMT), police had to disperse the crowd of demonstrators at the crossing between Karl Liebknecht and Kurt Eisner streets
“actively using water cannons, tear gas and pepper spray.” Many police officers as well as many protesters were injured in the incident, Leipziger Folkerszeitung reports.

Police said there is a "threatening atmosphere," and a "strong potential for violence" in the city of about 550,000 residents.

Following the mass riots, city police said that 69 officers had been injured. At least 50 service vehicles were damaged, with four left no longer roadworthy. Police took 23 people into custody.

Jung Burkhard, the mayor of Leipzig, denounced the clashes that took place during the demonstrations and said he was“shocked” by these incidents.

“These outbreaks of violence [provoked] by anarchists… are shocking. These are actions of reckless criminals. This is open street terror. Numerous injuries to police officers… were deliberately inflicted. Aggressive criminals disguised as anti-fascists attacked the city [of Leipzig],” he said commenting on Saturday incidents.

In his speech, Burkhard also expressed his gratitude to police officers, “who had to put their heads on the block once again.”

Earlier on Saturday, an unknown person or people started fires in many locations in Leipzig, an office of the regional lawmaker Marco Bohme from Die Linke (the Left) party was also attacked with unidentified individuals smashing the office’s windows.

Mein Büro wurde vor paar Stunden angegriffen, doch ich lasse mich nicht von euch Faschos einschüchtern!

However, no connection between this incident and the rallies has been established yet.

"When these incidents happened in the Vietnam Conflict era ... they were referred to as 'friendly fire' death ~~~ never understood why that term made it any easier for family to accept their loved one died via their own fellow soldier ..."

I think the phrase was intended to ease the pain of the shooters and make it easier for them.
