Worst in 100 years: Non-stop torrential rains ravage southern India (PHOTOS,VIDEO)

Thousands of people have been evacuated and a rescue operation is under way in Southern India, which has been severely flooded after several days of non-stop torrential rains, which prompted the closure of schools and factories and flight cancelations.

The city of Chennai, capital of the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, has been almost cut off from the outside world. According to local media, the rains have set a 100-year-old record in the city, which is home to about 6 million people.

"Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds may make the situation worse in Chennai," the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said, adding that the rains may continue for at least four days.

Thousands of people have been forced to flee their homes. The authorities have already canceled all flights and the trains have also stopped running, due to water on the tracks. Chennai International Airport, the fourth busiest in India, will remain shuttered until Thursday, Indian media reported.

The Indian Army, Navy and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed in the worst affected areas of the city. .

"We have started the rescue operation but the biggest challenge is to find a way to clear the inundated airport and main roads," Anurag Gupta, a senior official at the National Disaster Management Authority in New Delhi said, as cited by Reuters.

Photos and videos of people floating in boats along streets that have turned into rivers have literally flooded social media, with residents helping each other and even rescuing pets. Hundreds of people in less-affected areas have opened their homes for those in need.

According to the local authorities, over 1 million people have been affected by the natural disaster.

"The police want to help but there are no boats. We are trying not to panic," Ramana Goda, a local resident in an affected area, told Reuters.

Heavy rains in southern India since the end of November have killed at least 188 people, Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Jayalalithaa said.

"It was saddening to witness devastation and deaths during the festive season, but I have faith in the strength of Tamil Nadu," Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Sunday.

Nearly 200 refugee children have died in the Aegean Sea between Turkey and Greece so far this year, UNICEF says.

"In the Aegean [Sea], about 30 percent of the deaths this year have been of children. This is currently 185 children out of a total of 590 deaths in the Eastern Mediterranean this year," UNICEF spokeswoman Sarah Crowe said on Tuesday.

"Generally many more people [of all ages] have died in the Central Mediterranean, 2,890 so far," Crowe said.

"We don’t know what share of those who died are children though," the UNICEF official added.

Between January and September 2015, children represented nearly one third of all asylum seekers in the European Union, according to UNICEF.

A quarter of all these child applicants hail from Syria, followed by Afghan children with 18 percent of the total.

Kids 'most vulnerable' among refugees

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) says children are among the most vulnerable of the refugees traveling to Europe.

"Children are among the most vulnerable of the migrants and refugees traveling to Europe," Leonard Doyle, the IOM spokesman, said on Tuesday.

"In October, over 90 children died on their way to Greece, and in the past week, nine of the 12 deaths on this crossing have been of children. Along the journey, children are also more at risk of illness and injury, as well as exploitation, separation from family, kidnapping and trafficking," the IOM says.

The organization added that an important cause for concern was the high number of unaccompanied and separated children arriving in Europe.

Along the route through the Balkans to Western Europe, Macedonian authorities have registered more than 15,000 unaccompanied minors since mid-June.

The IOM has stated on its website that from January to October this year, over 23,000 unaccompanied and separated children had sought asylum in Sweden, the most sought after destination for children of that type in Europe. The figure is larger than that in the entire EU last year. The majority are adolescent males, although Italy has also seen a rise in the number of unaccompanied and trafficked Nigerian girls arriving.

According to the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, the number of refugees who have arrived on Europe's southern shores this year is climbing toward 900,000.

Marie-Pierre Poirier, the top UNICEF official dealing with the European migration crisis, has said, "Warm clothes, scarves and baby socks are not enough."

"Children ... need stability, protection and support," she has stated.

Via RT… An Illustration of the “U.S. State Department Double-Speak” (and you may wish to hold your nose shut when viewing this video)

https://youtu.be/VEhv6J0gFHo

Okay, I was looking through RT today, and found this article:

‘Pockets of ceasefires’ may soon turn up in Syria – Obama

The video (dated 11-2-15) was preceded by this statement:

“Russia insists that its air strikes do not target opposition – only Islamic State. Even though Washington has been alleging the opposite from the very beginning of the Russian campaign, US officials have failed to produce any relevant proof, or cite any sources that can be verified.”

Yes, this video affirms a fact of which many are aware, that they are not quite willing to tell anything like the truth of the situation. And their spokespeople are trained in “DoubleSpeak”… aka, “Conveyors of Bull****”.

So that’s why you may wish to hold your nose shut when viewing this video.

Check out these amazing photos from the world’s biggest day of climate action ever

Sunday was far and away the biggest day of climate action the planet has ever seen — one day before world leaders descended on Paris for the landmark U.N. Climate Summit.

There was no major climate march in Paris — it had been called off in the wake of the recent terrorist attacks in the city, replaced by more quiet actions — but activists in other places around the world more than made up for it. Hundreds of thousands of people joined an estimated 2,300 marches and actions in 175 countries over the weekend, demanding that the heads of state and negotiators in Paris pull together a strong deal to fight global warming — and fight to keep fossil fuels in the ground and shift to 100 percent clean energy.

    • A suspicious device left at the center is "believed to be an explosive device," he said.
    • Officials are searching an apartment in Redlands, Calif., in a raid related to therampage.
