Prominent human rights activist killed in attack in Turkey

Top Kurdish activist killed in Turkey gunfight

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — A prominent lawyer and human rights defender, who faced a criminal charge for supporting Kurdish rebels, was killed Saturday in an attack in southeast Turkey in which a police officer also died, officials said.

Tahir Elci was shot while he and other lawyers were making a press statement. Two policemen and a journalist were also injured.

It wasn't immediately clear who was behind the attack and there were conflicting reports about what led to it.

Interior Minister Efkan Ala and other officials said the assault was against police officers, and that Elci died in an ensuing clash. However, the Diyarbakir Bar Association said the lawyer, who was Kurdish, was the target of the attack.

Elci, 49, was the head of the bar association in the mainly Kurdish city and a human rights activist.

He was briefly detained and questioned last month for saying during a live news program that the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, is not a terrorist organization. Soon after, he was charged with making terrorist propaganda and was facing more than seven years in prison.

Turkey and its allies consider the PKK to be a terrorist organization, and the government has stepped up attacks against it in recent months. The PKK has been fighting for autonomy in southeastern Turkey since 1984.

Ala said the attack began with two people firing at police from an area some 100 meters (109 yards) away from where Elci was speaking. A policeman died in that attack. Ala said Elci died soon after in a clash between the police and assailants.

Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu spoke of two possible scenarios.

"One possibility is that after this terror attack, the assailants assassinated Mr. Elci," Davutoglu said. "A second possibility is that ... Elci got caught in the crossfire."

Davutoglu vowed to find the culprits through a "transparent" investigation and promised no cover-up.

A government official said four inspectors have been assigned to investigate the case, adding that the government was "determined to shed light" on the attack.

He said authorities believe that Elci was caught in the crossfire, but were not ruling out "the possibility that a third party directly targeted him." The official cannot be named because he was not authorized to speak publicly on the issue.

Elci had said through his Twitter account that he had received death threats because of his televised comments in which he defended the rebels.

Authorities declared a curfew in the Sur neighborhood where the attack occurred — a scene of frequent clashes between security forces and Kurdish youths.

Protests later broke out in Diyarbakir and elsewhere denouncing the killing.

In Diyarbakir, police used pressurized water against a group of protesters who hurled rocks and fire crackers. Police also dispersed hundreds of people who had gathered in central Istanbul chanting: "We are all Tahir, we are all Elci."

At the time of the attack, Elci and other lawyers were making a statement about the destruction caused to a historic mosque by the clashes in Sur. Elci had strongly advocated an end to the renewed violence between the PKK and security forces.

The U.S. Embassy expressed shock over Elci's death, calling him a "courageous defender of human rights."

"Our condolences go to his family, that of the policeman killed and to all of Turkey. A terrible loss," the embassy said on Twitter.

Elci was the lawyer for Mohammed Rasool, a journalist who has worked for The Associated Press and other media organizations. Rasool was arrested in August in Diyarbakir while reporting for Vice News.

After suspending their visa-free travel agreement

Putin orders sanctions against Turkey after downing of jet

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan addresses a rally in Bayburt, Turkey, Friday, Nov. 27, 2015. Russia announced Friday that it will suspend visa-free travel with Turkey amid the escalating spat over the downing of a Russian warplane by a Turkish fighter jet at the Syrian border. Erdogan refused to apologize for the plane's downing, which Ankara said came after it flew for 17 seconds into Turkish airspace. At the same timed, Erdogan said he has tried in vain to speak by phone to Putin to discuss the situation.(AP Photo/Yasin Bulbul, Presidential Press Service, Pool )

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday called for sanctions against Turkey, following the downing this week by Turkey of a Russian warplane.

The decree published on the Kremlin's website Saturday came hours after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had voiced regret over the incident, saying his country was "truly saddened" by the event and wished it hadn't occurred.

It includes a ban on some goods and forbids extensions of labor contracts for Turks working in Russia as of Jan. 1. It doesn't specify what goods are to be banned or give other details, but it also calls for ending chartered flights from Russia to Turkey and for Russian tourism companies to stop selling vacation packages that would include a stay in Turkey.

Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev earlier in the week had ordered his cabinet to develop a list of goods to be sanctioned.

Putin's decree also calls for ending visa-free travel between Russia and Turkey and orders the tightening of control over Turkish air carriers in Russia "for security reasons." The decree was issued "to protect Russian citizens from crimes," a Kremlin statement said.

Erdogan's expression of regret Saturday was the first since Tuesday's incident in which Turkish F-16 jets shot down the Russian jet on grounds that it had violated Turkey's airspace despite repeated warnings to change course. It was the first time in half a century that a NATO member shot down a Russian plane and drew a harsh response from Moscow.

"We are truly saddened by this incident," Erdogan said. "We wish it hadn't happened as such, but unfortunately such a thing has happened. I hope that something like this doesn't occur again."

Addressing supporters in the western city of Balikesir, Erdogan said neither country should allow the incident to escalate and take a destructive form that would lead to "saddening consequences."

He renewed a call for a meeting with Putin on the sidelines of a climate conference in Paris next week, saying it would be an opportunity to overcome tensions.

Erdogan's friendly overture however, came after he again vigorously defended Turkey's action and criticized Russia for its operations in Syria.

"If we allow our sovereign rights to be violated ... then the territory would no longer be our territory," Erdogan said.

Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu also said he hoped a meeting between Erdogan and Putin would take place in Paris.

"In such situations it is important to keep the channels of communication open," he said.

Putin has denounced the Turkish action as a "treacherous stab in the back," and has insisted that the plane was downed over Syrian territory in violation of international law. He has also refused to take telephone calls from Erdogan. Putin's foreign affairs adviser, Yuri Ushakov, said Friday that the Kremlin had received Erdogan's request for a meeting, but wouldn't say whether such a meeting is possible.

Asked why Putin hasn't picked up the phone to respond to Erdogan's two phone calls, he said that "we have seen that the Turkish side hasn't been ready to offer an elementary apology over the plane incident."

After the incident, Russia deployed long-range S-400 air defense missile systems to a Russian air base in Syria just 50 kilometers (30 miles) south of the border with Turkey to help protect Russian warplanes, and the Russian military warned it would shoot down any aerial target that would pose a potential threat to its planes.

On Saturday Turkey issued a travel warning urging its nationals to delay non-urgent and unnecessary travel to Russia, saying Turkish travelers were facing "problems" in the country. It said Turks should delay travel plans until "the situation becomes clear."

When is a terrorist group not a terrorist group? by Peter Eyre

Oh, my! Follow this, and you will see what tangled webs they weave to confuse us — only they aren’t getting away with it anymore. Thanks, Peter, for sharing this with us. ~J :)

When is a terrorist group not a terrorist group?

When it supports the goals of Western foreign policy!

Having spent considerable time working in the Middle East (both in the military and as a civilian) I find the level of government, military and media deception is at an all time high.

Let’s take the current situation in Syria and Iraq as an example when we look at the alleged fight against ISIL/ISIS and view it from a US/UK/EU perspective.

During my many visits to Northern Iraq I became aware of the Kurdish struggle for recognition and their desire to create their own autonomous region in bordering Turkey, Syria, Iran and Iraq.

Historically the Kurdish Empire occupied land that extended from the Mediterranean Sea (in the northwest corner of Syria) up through the South Eastern part of Turkey, across the Northern part of Iraq and curving down towards to Northern Extremity of the Persian Gulf on both sides of the Iraq/Iran Border.

We now see the establishment of Kurdistan (Northern Iraq) which is an autonomous region with its own regional government all of which still falls under the control of the central government of Iraq.

I will now attempt to prove how hypocritical we in the west have been in politically accepting some Kurdish militia and not others with an emphasis on the USA, UK, EU and Turkish foreign policy.

This same hypocritical approach exists within NATO (especially Turkey) who play a very deceptive role when changing their bed partners!

We all know that one of the best fighting forces that exist within Kurdistan (the Peshmerga) are hardened warriors that control this extremely difficult harsh terrain and mountainous region.

Within this same region we also have two very well known groups called the PKK and the PJAK who’s goal is exactly the same – “to create their own Kurdish run autonomous regions in what was once their own empire.” i.e. within bordering Syria, Turkey and Iran.

The west however, namely the US, UK and Turkey (NATO Member), have labeled the PKK as a terrorist group because of its activities in Turkey where many Kurdish people live.

From my perspective I know this Kurdish group as being “Freedom Fighters” who are simply trying to receive their own identity within the countries they border and I also know that the PKK were successful in winning their case before the European Convention on Human Rights and were cleared of being labeled a terrorist group and yet the US – UK – Turkey do not accept this verdict!

As a result of the above the Turkish Air Force and Ground Forces frequently carryout incursions deep into Kurdistan to bomb and shell villages and towns which they believe house PKK forces.

Remember Kurdistan is part of Iraq which was and still is (to some extent) controlled by NATO of which Turkey is a member and which appears to turn a blind eye!! …….I am sure you would all agree this is indeed a breach of sovereignty and yet the United Nations remains silent!!

On the other side of Kurdistan we have the PJAK who carry out the same activity over the border in Iran but in this case the US, UK and NATO approve of their activities and do not label them as a terrorist organization but help in training, funding and arming them!

It is obvious that the PJAK is favoured by the West because they are fighting within Iran which as we all know is still a prime target for the US, UK, Israel and NATO forces.

Maybe you are at last starting to see the real truth behind the many conflicts around the Middle East and their hidden agenda which is to force a regime change in order to access their natural resources, etc.

Now lets look at the current hot spot Syria and again look into what part the above Kurdish groups play:

In Eastern and Northern Syria there are many Kurds and within those regions we have an extension of the so-called PKK terrorist group which operates under the disguise of the PYD….still with me?

Currently in Syria we have the following situation on hand in that the US, UK, Turkey (NATO), Israel and now France illegally fighting ISIL/ISIS (who they themselves created, assisted in training, funded and armed) – Russia Fighting ISIL/ISIS with the full approval of the Syrian Government and Kurdish (alleged terrorist) groups also fighting ISIL/ISIS!!!

This is where it now turns into one huge hypocritical nightmare:

50 Soldiers of the U.S. Army (Special Forces) have now illegally crossed the border from Turkey into the Syrian town of Ein al Arab (which they now occupy) and they are now……..wait for it……. “supporting the Kurds in the fight against ISIL/ISIS ………..the very group the US,UK, Turkey and NATO have listed as a terrorist organization!!!

On the other hand we now have Russia helping the Kurds with one headline being ‘Kurds attack Turkish-backed Syrian opposition forces with Russian help’

Now we have France and Israel barking up the same tree with their headline reading:

“France and Israel launch a new war in Iraq and Syria.”

The objective is no longer to overthrow the secular Syrian régime, nor to destroy its army, but to create a colonial state straddling the border between Iraq and Syria, to be managed by the Kurds, in order to apply a stranglehold on the Arab states. The dream of an Israeli nation between the Nile and the Euphrates is back.

Now read between the lines:

Turkey allows the US, UK and NATO to use its soil as a staging post for any attack against those regimes it wishes to topple i.e. Iraq and now Syria but also allows the above to support the very organization it refuses to accept the Kurdish PKK etc……now that is very hypocritical don’t you think?…….also note the game Israel is playing in wishing to extend its borders!

Israel has already taken a big slice of Syria via the Golan Heights – where next?

Finally we can see here that the Kurd’s are using this situation to their own advantage in attempting to gain back the territory they once occupied……They are heavily involved in fighting on the border with Syria, Turkey and Iran in addition to gaining their own autonomous region within Iraq now known as Kurdistan.

I guess the answer is to stop the 40 odd countries from supporting ISIl/ISIS (which they themselves created)…… not to mention all the others they established i.e. Taliban and Al Queda etc and bring the true terrorist to trial – Bush (Senior and Junior) – Rumsfeld – Cheney – Wolfowit – Tony Blair etc etc
