Governor: Missing in Brazil disaster unlikely to be found

Associated Press

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — The 28 people missing since the failure of two dams at an iron ore mine flooded a village in southeastern Brazil are unlikely to be found alive, the governor of the affected state said Sunday.

Speaking at a news conference, Minas Gerais Gov. Fernando Pimentel said it was still not known what triggered Thursday's failure of dams at the Samarco mine, which sent viscous red mud, water and debris flooding into the hamlet of Bento Rodrigues, flattening all but a handful of buildings.

The mud tide has continued to spread, causing flooding in other nearby towns, pouring into an area river and threatening the water supply of several cities in the neighboring state of Espirito Santo.

"One lost human life would be irreparable — imagine 28," Pimentel was quoted as saying by the Rio de Janeiro newspaper O Globo. "It's a disaster, a tragedy of great dimension."

One person has been confirmed dead, and 15 village residents and 13 mine workers are listed as missing, the governor and the state fire department said Sunday.

The number of missing has been in flux in recent days, with local officials saying pockets of survivors might still be holed up in isolated areas. Authorities said Saturday that 19 people were missing, a few hours after reporting 23 people unaccounted for.

The state fire department said on its Twitter feed that two additional bodies had found and sent to the coroner's office for identification. The message cautioned that "it has not been confirmed they are victims of the disaster." In a later tweet, the fire department said a third body was located in the area on Sunday and workers were working to remove it from the mud.

Helicopter searches for survivors resumed Sunday morning despite rainy conditions that have hampered rescue efforts. Emergency response officials have said the volatility of the mud, which is still wet and can act like quicksand, can put rescue workers at risk.

A team of veterinarians was rescuing animals left behind in the tragedy, the governor said.

Pimentel said that Samarco, which is jointly owned by the Brazilian mining company Vale and Australia's BHP Billiton, has provided machines to help in the search efforts and is paying for housing people whose homes were destroyed in the accident. More than 550 people have been put up in hotels in a neighboring city.

The company has insisted the mud is not toxic and does not represent a threat to human health.

Police have restricted access to the disaster zone, making it difficult for journalists to access the affected areas.

Missing in Brazil disaster unlikely to be found

Prospects are dim for finding 28 people missing in a massive mudslide, says the governor of the affected state.

China's Xi to attend Asia-Pacific summit amid sea disputes

BEIJING/MANILA (Reuters) - Chinese President Xi Jinping will attend a summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) group next week, the Foreign Ministry said on Monday, amid tensions between China and the Philippines over the disputed South China Sea.

The APEC meeting will take place in Manila from Nov. 17 to 19. APEC's members include the United States, China, Japan, South Korea, Indonesia and Canada, and together account for 57 percent of global production and 46.5 percent of world trade.

China has overlapping claims with Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Taiwan and Brunei in the South China Sea, through which $5 trillion in ship-borne trade passes every year.

A summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations last week, attended by both the United States and China, failed to produce a final statement because the delegations could not agree on whether to mention the South China Sea dispute.

China has been particularly angered by a case lodged by the Philippines with an arbitration court in the Netherlands over the South China Sea. China says it will neither recognize nor participate in the case.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will visit the Philippines on Tuesday to discuss preparations for Xi's visit and ways to improve Beijing's relations with Manila, China's Foreign Ministry said.

"At present, because of reasons everyone knows about, Sino-Philippine relations are facing difficulties. This is something China does not wish to see," ministry spokesman Hong Lei told a daily news briefing.

"China pays great attention to relations with the Philippines and is willing to appropriately resolve relevant issues on the basis of dialogue and negotiation."

Prior to going to Manila, Xi will attend the G20 summit in Turkey, the foreign ministry added.

A demolition crew on Monday dismantled one of Manila's largest makeshift markets and rounded up homeless families to clean up roads ahead of the summit.

Workers painted sidewalks while dozens of police began patrols around the convention center where the meets will be held.

"We were told to take a vacation for two weeks," Rosa Diaz, a 65-year-old cigarette vendor, said as the wrecking crew dismantled hundreds of stalls selling used clothes, slippers and toys outside a church. "They said we could return after APEC."

A bishop and leftist labor group criticized government's clean-up campaign.

"Their solution is temporary," Manila Auxiliary Bishop Broderick Pabillo said on radio. "They want to show the visitors that there are no poor people, but why can't we find a permanent solution for our poor people?"

China smog reaches 50 times WHO recommendations

AFP

Beijing (AFP) - A swathe of China was blanketed with acrid smog Monday after levels of dangerous particulates reached around 50 times World Health Organization maximums, in what environmental campaigners said were the highest figures ever recorded in the country.

Pictures showed smog so thick that buildings in Changchun, the capital of Jilin province in the northeast, were rendered invisible.

One image showed a restaurant's neon sign seemingly floating in mid-air above traffic, proclaiming in yellow: “Eastern Dumpling King”.

Levels of PM2.5, the tiny airborne particles considered most harmful to health, reached 860 micrograms per cubic metre in the city of around eight million.

The World Health Organization’s recommended maximum is a 24-hour average of 25 micrograms.

“Today’s haze is pretty severe and choking - when I walked out the door I thought someone’s house was on fire,” said one poster in Changchun on China's Twitter-like Sina Weibo.

China's chronic pollution is generally worse in winter, when power consumption -- much of it fuelled by coal -- rises along with demand for heating to combat the bitter cold.

The scourge has been linked to hundreds of thousands of premature deaths, and has become a major source of popular discontent with the government.

PM2.5 particulates can play a role in heart disease, stroke, and lung ailments such as emphysema and cancer.

Their overall levels reached 1,157 micrograms per cubic metre on Sunday in Shenyang, the capital of the neighbouring province of Liaoning, data from the city's own environmental protection bureau showed.

They peaked as high as 1,400 in parts of Shenyang according to state broadcaster CCTV, with visibility less than 100 metres.

"As far as we are aware from the data we have been observing over the past few years, this is the highest ever PM2.5 level recording" in the country, Greenpeace campaigner Dong Liansai told AFP.

An image circulating online showed a man biking through snow in Shenyang wearing a vintage-looking gas mask, and the official news agency Xinhua quoted a hospital official in the city saying that his respiratory ward had been overwhelmed, with all its beds full.

Online commentators were furious.

"If heating companies dare to buy cheap, low-quality coal and pollute the environment, they should be discovered and immediately shot," said one poster.

- 'Central heating' -

Shenyang's apocalyptic smog was caused by coal use from its public heating system and by heavy pollution blown in from other provinces, city environmental authorities said on a verified social media account.

The explanation provoked derision online.

"Sweden also has central heating – why don't they have haze?" asked one poster.

Xinhua blasted the city's emergency response as “useless” in the face of "such severe haze and pollution", which it said was the heaviest of the year.

"Fairyland or doomsday?" quipped Xinhua of the sorry winterscapes on its Twitter account.

Calls made to the environmental protection bureau in Shenyang, where more than eight million people live, went unanswered.

The Changchun city government said on social media Monday that it was initiating a “level three” emergency response, telling schools to stop organising outdoor activities, and reminding residents to stay indoors and “take health precautions”, without further specifications.

China used almost 4.3 billion tonnes of coal in 2013, according to the latest official statistics -- in which figures for previous years were revised upwards by hundreds of millions of tonnes.

Beijing has pledged that its emissions of carbon dioxide, the primary greenhouse gas pollutant released from the burning of coal, will peak by "around 2030".

Northeastern provinces such as Jilin and Liaoning do not yet have a coal consumption cap, Greenpeace campaigner Dong said, describing it as "a measure which can rapidly improve air quality".

Last month, the environmental group found that nearly 80 percent of Chinese cities had pollution levels that "greatly exceeded" national standards over the first nine months of this year.

Yet online commentators expressed concerns that governmental attempts to clean up the air would be too little, too late.

"It's like this every year," was a common refrain.

One user wrote: "Environmental pollution has made chronic diseases more and more common; we're becoming the sick man of Asia of the new century."

FALSE FLAG SETUP?

Thermonuclear missile launch near Los Angeles is final sign of World War III on the precipice... US, China and Russia all escalating covert attacks in run up to global war

Sunday, November 08, 2015
by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger

(NaturalNews) "A mysterious bright light in the sky has sent Californians into panic," reports
the BBC. "Videos posted online show a bright flare rising high, before a wide, bright blue flash emerges in a cone shape. Many videos continue to track the light for several minutes."

Last night, Californians immediately leapt to social media to propose their theories of the phenomenon, ranging from a nuclear missile attack to meteors. "Law agencies and news media in San Diego were flooded with calls about 6 p.m. from people reporting everything from a flare to a comet to a nuclear bomb in the western sky," reports the San Diego Union Tribune.

Just a day earlier, the FAA had issued flight restrictions for the Los Angeles International Airport, denying aircraft access to one of the most frequent approach paths for international and domestic travel.

The official explanation is a lie

The "official" explanation of this event -- and remember that "official" explanations are almost always cover stories -- is that the U.S. Navy launched a test missile just because they "routinely" test missiles.

"Media in California confirmed that the light came from an unarmed Trident missile fired from the USS Kentucky navy submarine," reports the BBC. While they call the missile "unarmed," they fail to mention that the Trident missile normally carries a thermonuclear warhead. There's also no way for the media to know whether this missile was really unarmed or not, as the sole source on that question is the U.S. Navy itself.

Apparently the media thinks the public is so incredibly stupid that they'll believe the U.S. Navy has nowhere else to launch a test missile other than right next to Los Angeles. Somehow we're supposed to believe the entire Pacific Ocean won't work for such a test launch, so they have to launch it adjacent to the airport and thereby inconvenience commercial aviation traffic for an entire week.

Obviously, the official cover story is pure bunk. So what's the real story behind this? It all has to do with China and the covert war that's already underway between China, the US and Russia.

China's military submarines are a huge threat to U.S. national security

To get up to speed on what's really happening, read this report from the Congressional Research Service (PDF) found at http://www.fas.org/sgp/crs/row/RL33153.pdf

Authored by Ronald O'Rourke, Specialist in Naval Affairs, and just released on Sep. 21, 2015, the report is entitled, "China Naval Modernization: Implications for U.S. Navy Capabilities."

The report states:

China is building a modern and regionally powerful navy with a limited but growing capability for conducting operations beyond China’s near-seas region. Observers of Chinese and U.S. military forces view China’s improving naval capabilities as posing a potential challenge in the Western Pacific to the U.S. Navy’s ability to achieve and maintain control of blue-water ocean areas in wartime -- the first such challenge the U.S. Navy has faced since the end of the Cold War.

China’s naval modernization effort encompasses a broad array of platform and weapon acquisition programs, including anti-ship ballistic missiles (ASBMs), anti-ship cruise missiles (ASCMs), submarines, surface ships, aircraft, and supporting C4ISR (command and control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance) systems.

The most important section of this report, in my assessment, is this description of China's ship-killing ballistic missiles:

China is fielding an ASBM, referred to as the DF-21D, that is a theater-range ballistic missile equipped with a maneuverable reentry vehicle (MaRV) designed to hit moving ships at sea. DOD states that China continues to field an ASBM based on a variant of the CSS-5 (DF-21) MRBM that it began deploying in 2010. This missile provides the PLA the capability to attack aircraft carriers in the western Pacific. The CSS-5 Mod 5 has a range exceeding 1,500 km [about 810 nm] and is armed with a maneuverable warhead.

China, in other words, has weapons capable of destroying U.S. aircraft carriers, destroyers and other ships. The 1,500 km range is key because it allows a very wide operational range.

Just recently in August, the Chinese and Russians held their largest naval joint exercise in history as a way to "counter U.S. influence in Asia." As reported by Collapse.news:

The Russian and Chinese navies are set to hold their largest joint exercises ever, featuring scores of warships, hundreds of troops and an amphibious landing, in what appears to be a deepening of ties meant to counter a rising U.S. military presence in Asia.

In September, Chinese warships were spotted operating near the coast of Alaska. This was reported across the mainstream media, including in the Wall Street Journal in an article entitled, "Five Chinese Navy Ships Are Operating in Bering Sea off Alaska."

Fox News also covered the same story: "5 Chinese warships spotted off Alaska coast during President Obama's visit."

In response to that territorial provocation, the U.S. Navy sent the USS Lassen destroyer to within 12 nautical miles of China's newly-constructed military bases in the Spratly Islands.

China's communist government openly condemned the act as a provocation of war. From the Straits Times:

China claims most of the South China Sea and on Oct 9 its Foreign Ministry warned that Beijing would "never allow any country to violate China's territorial waters and airspace in the Spratly Islands, in the name of protecting freedom of navigation and overflight."

Secret space weapon attacks on China's industrial infrastructure

This is all on top of the Pentagon's secret space weapon attacks on China's industrial infrastructure.

As I wrote on August 17 of this year, Natural News was informed by mainland Chinese dissidents that they believe the string of mysterious industrial explosions such as the massive Tianjin explosion was caused by kinetic strikes from orbital platform weapons operated by the United States.

China then retaliated by covertly destroying a U.S. weapons depot in Tokyo, using old-school sabotage techniques. Two additional industrial explosions in China soon followed.

Taiwan surrenders to China with insane "One China" admission by President Ma

China's war of aggression is also in high gear on the geopolitical side, with China pressuring Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou to publicly state yesterday that Taiwan is now part of China!

A massive cultural backlash in Taiwan is now surging, as most of the country's citizens do not want to be part of communist China. Taiwan's DPP party is rapidly rising to prominence on the platform of Taiwan as a sovereign nation, but China remains in an aggressive military stance, always threatening Taiwan with an armed invasion if Taiwan attempts to "secede" from China. (Taiwan's GMT party, which is a "pro-China" party, has been plagued by an endless stream of scandals and corruption.)

From Channel News Asia: "Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou emphasised the island must continue to uphold the 1992 Consensus with China’s Communist Party in order to promote cross-strait relations and development, as he marked the 22nd anniversary of the historic talks between Taipei and Beijing in Singapore."

Taiwan is a critical strategic island for U.S. influence over the Pacific naval theater of operations. Taiwan's airports and military basis provide key strategic locations for staging U.S. aircraft and even bombers if conflict breaks out with China.

As you ponder all this, keep in mind that Taiwan's media giants have all been infiltrated and taken over by communist China. The Taiwan media is now China's state-run media. Only small, independent websites can be trusted to report the truth.

The Trident missile launch near Los Angeles was a warning shot against China in a last-ditch effort to prevent all-out war

The upshot of all this is that the U.S. and China have been engaged in a covert war for quite some time, and that covert war has escalated month by month, even as the official state-run news organizations of both nations have denied any war is happening at all.

Last night's test launch of the Trident missile over Orange County was staged near a high population area for a tactical reason: To have as many witnesses (and videos) as possible, sending a very visible warning message to China that says, "We can destroy you if you don't back off."

The Trident missile, built by Lockheed Martin, is a thermonuclear missile system (Fleet Ballistic Missile) with a range of at least 4,000 nautical miles. See the Trident missile page on the U.S. Navy website. Just one Trident missile launched from somewhere in the Pacific Ocean could devastate China with a nuclear strike on Beijing.

The U.S. Navy's "showcasing" of the Trident missile near Los Angeles is a $31 million billboard that tells China, "Don't f--k with us."

Nobody in the mainstream media is report this; probably because, with a few exceptions, they are mostly clueless, brain-dead propagandists who know nothing about international geopolitics and the real state of conflict in our world. Also, they are ordered what to write by the U.S. government regime in exactly the same way China's "journalists" are ordered what to write by the Chinese regime.

Right now, the United States and China are in an undeclared state of war. China stands ready to strike the USA with nuclear warheads or high altitude EMP weapons that would destroy the U.S. power grid and cause 90% casualties across the unprepared population. Legendary American journalist Ted Koppel has even written a book about this entitled Lights Out: A Cyberattack, A Nation Unprepared, Surviving the Aftermath.

China and Russia preparing massive first strike against America

Many people believe that China and Russia are working together to prepare for a massive first strike against the United States that would cripple its defenses and economy. Following that first strike, a land invasion would commence using Russian troops.

Supporting this theory, Russian submarines have been spotted near undersea internet cables in an obvious effort to document their whereabouts so that the cables can be instantly severed, unleashing a devastating blow to the U.S. economy, Wall Street and even military communications. "Russian submarines and spy ships are aggressively operating near the vital undersea cables that carry almost all global Internet communications, raising concerns among some American military and intelligence officials that the Russians might be planning to attack those lines in times of conflict," reports WND.com. " In times of tension or conflict, the ultimate Russian hack on the United States could involve severing the fiber-optic cables at some of their hardest-to-access locations to halt the instant communications on which the West’s governments, economies and citizens have grown dependent."

At the same time a new Russian "drone sub" has been created that can strike U.S. coastal cities and harbors with nuclear weapons. Writing on NationalSecurity.news, Jon Dougherty states, "According to officials, the developmental unmanned underwater vehicle, or UUV, when it is deployed, will be outfitted with megaton-class nuclear warheads that can destroy key ports used by U.S. nuclear-armed and powered submarines like Kings Bay, Georgia, and Puget Sound in Washington state."

The ultimate pre-emptive strike on America: EMP attack, cyber attack, currency wars and bandwidth blackouts

If you put the pieces of the puzzle together, what's really shaping up here is a massive, multi-layered pre-emptive strike against America, an empire seen by the rest of the world as an insane bully that meddles with everything on the international stage. This first strike, combining the forces and expertise of both China and Russia, may consist of:

• High-altitude EMP detonation over North America, destroying regional power grids.
• A devastating currency war initiated by China announcing its own gold-backed currency while dumping U.S. Treasury debt on the open market.
• A Russian-led severing of undersea fiber optic cables.
• Russian-launched nuclear missiles targeting U.S. coastal cities.
• China-led assault on U.S. Navy warships using anti-ship ballistic missiles (ASBMs).
• A cyber warfare attack on key U.S. infrastructure, including water delivery systems, nuclear power plants and the power grid.

As all this is going on, the Obama administration -- a treasonous regime of criminals who have seized control of the U.S. government in an effort to destroy America from within -- has been firing all the top military commanders who know how to survive such an assault. Instead of America's military focusing on how to win wars, troops are now subjected to sensitivity training and the politically correct push for female troops on the front lines.

This is not fiction. Even the U.S. White House is now openly preparing for a massive EMP attack launched by China.

Dave Hodges also reports in this article about World War III:

Congress has now heard testimony that the United States is not ready for World War III while Russia is chomping at the bit to “get it on”. Further Congress has learned that Obama has been once again been badly outmaneuvered by Putin, the master chess player... the Chinese and the Russians are going to kick America’s rear end in the upcoming war.

Very disturbingly, there is a growing awareness, among Congress, that the United States cannot win World War III. There was only discussion, in these congressional meetings, as to whether, or not, the U.S. could prevail in World War III, not win the conflict.

To stay up to speed on all these events and how you might survive them, I strongly urge you to pay attention to the following websites:

Defense Secretary Suggests Putin Might Nuke America, Says US Will "Defend International Order"

Tyler Durden's picture

Defense Secretary Ash Carter is a funny guy. We’re not out to disparage him personally (although we’ll happily disparage Washington’s foreign policy for which he is partially responsible), but he sure does have an uncanny ability to land himself in situations that end up generating amusing photo ops. Here are just two examples from last week:

"Show me some love"...

"Just listening to Kenny Loggins in my headphones with my water bottle and yeah, since you asked, that's my aircraft carrier down there"...

Of course to be fair to Carter, Washington hasn't exactly put him in a good position. After all, what the US is doing in Syria is deplorable and with the passing of MANPADS and anti-tank missiles to Sunni extremists near Aleppo, the whole "strategy" now borders on the bizarre, especially in light of what happened over the Sinai Peninsula last weekend and also taking into account Washington's relationship with Siite militias battling ISIS in Iraq.

Meanwhile, the situation in the South China Sea is just downright silly, as Washington and Beijing risk starting World War III over 3,000 acres of sand that Beijing piled on top of reefs in the Spratlys.

Still, when you're the face of The Pentagon, you've got to champion the narrative and that narrative now revolves around two things, i) a resurgent Russia, and ii) the rise of China.

Put simply (and colloquially), more than one US military strategist believes the US and NATO would be "annihilated" in a Balkan battle with the Russians and when it comes to China, well, getting into a maritime dispute in the South Pacific (which is the right way to analyze this by the way, because it's not like Beijing is going to sail into San Francisco and invade the US mainland) might be a horrible idea:

So, against that backdrop, and with Russia's dramatic intervention in Syria in mind, Ash gave a keynote speech during the annual Reagan National Defense Forum in southern California, on Saturday.

Below, we present the "highlights" as documented by the DoD and the video clip courtesy of AP. Enjoy your Sunday evening US foreign policy briefing and please do note that Carter suggests Putin wants to nuke America:

“In the face of Russia’s provocations and China’s rise,” Carter said, “we must embrace innovative approaches to protect the United States and strengthen that international order.”

Russia is violating sovereignty in Ukraine and Georgia and is trying to intimidate the Baltic states, and in Syria it is prolonging a civil war, the secretary added.

“At sea, in the air, in space and in cyberspace, Russian actors have engaged in challenging activities,” he told the audience, noting that Moscow’s nuclear saber-rattling raises questions about Russian leaders’ commitment to strategic stability.

“We do not seek to make Russia an enemy,”Carter said. “But make no mistake. The United States will defend our interests, and our allies, the principled international order, and the positive future it affords us all.”

Carter said the United States is modernizing its nuclear arsenal to ensure America’s nuclear deterrent, investing in new unmanned systems, a new long-range bomber, and innovation in technologies like the electromagnetic rail gun, lasers and new systems for electronic warfare, space, cyberspace, and others.

“And we’re accordingly transforming our posture in Europe to be more agile and sustainable,” the secretary said.
