IS frees 37 kidnapped Syrian Christians: NGO

Beirut (AFP) - The Islamic State group released 37 Syrian Christians Saturday, most of them women, who were among more than 200 people kidnapped in February, an NGO said.

The group of Assyrian Christians consisted of 27 women and 10 men, most of them elderly, the Assyrian Monitor for Human Rights.

They arrived on Saturday morning in the town of Tal Tamr in the Khabur region of Hasakeh province in northeastern Syria, the group said.

The releases were confirmed by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitor, which said most of those freed were from other towns in Khabur.

The former hostages were among a group of 220 Assyrians captured by IS when they overran parts of the region in February.

Since then, a trickle of prisoners has been released, with between 140 and 150 believed to be still held by IS.

The Assyrian Monitor said the releases were the result of negotiations carried out by the church, but other reports suggest IS has been paid to free the hostages.

Assyrians numbered about 30,000 among Syria's 1.2 million Christians before the country's conflict began. They lived mostly in 35 villages in Hasakeh.

In February, IS overran many of the villages, but Kurdish forces later expelled them.

IS has captured hundreds of hostages, including Christians from different denominations, in territory it controls in Syria and Iraq.

Elsewhere, the Britain-based Observatory said at least 10 civilians, among them a child and a woman, were killed in air strikes on rebel-held Douma, outside Damascus.

The group said the strikes were believed to have been carried out by Russian warplanes, but could not confirm.

The Observatory's director Rami Abdel Rahman said the toll was expected to rise because of the number of people seriously wounded.

Douma lies in the Eastern Ghouta region outside Damascus and is a frequent target of government air strikes.

The Observatory also said Saturday that the toll in Thursday air strikes on the town on Albu Kamal on the Syrian border with Iraq had risen to 49 people, at least 31 of them civilians.

It had previously said at least 22 people were killed in the strikes, but it was not able to confirm who was behind the attacks.

Russia, Syria's government and a US-led coalition are all carrying out bombing in Syria, sometimes operating in the same areas.

The Observatory said at least four of those killed in the attacks on the IS-held town were children.

Desperate search for Brazil mudslide survivors

Mariana (Brazil) (AFP) - Rescuers will spend a fourth day Sunday scouring for survivors beneath an avalanche of mud and mining sludge that buried a village in southeast Brazil, killing at least two people and leaving 28 missing.

Hundreds of firefighters, soldiers and civil defense workers are frantically combing through the viscous mass that swallowed everything in its path for signs of life.

The increasingly desperate search was suspended at dusk Saturday because "it is a high-risk area that is difficult to access," said Duarte Goncalves Junior, mayor of the nearby city of Mariana.

The tragedy occurred when waste reservoirs at the partly Australian-owned Samarco iron ore mine burst open, unleashing a sea of muck that flattened the nearby village of Bento Rodrigues on Thursday.

Since then, the tidal wave of sludge has continued its destructive advance, leveling a neighborhood and the main plaza in the town of Barra Longa, 60 kilometers (35 miles) away, but causing no loss of life there, a spokesman for the mayor's office told AFP.

The cascade of debris began with the collapse of a dike at a reservoir holding mining waste, which spilled into an adjoining valley.

A short time later, a water reservoir broke, and the mass of liquid sludge swept over Bento Rodrigues.

"There was a horrible noise and we saw the mud approaching. We ran for it. It is a miracle that we are still alive," said Valeria de Souza, 20, with a baby in her arms and tears in her eyes.

But not everyone was so lucky and families of the missing were desperately seeking news of their loved ones, amid widely disparate official information.

Authorities have given contradictory tolls of the dead and missing in and around Bento Rodrigues, which has a population of about 620.

The head of Mariana's firefighting force, Adao Severino Junior, had said that there were at least 17 dead, adding to the confusion.

But the official toll was later revised to at least two dead and 28 missing, said Goncalves Junior.

Mining giant BHP Billiton, joint owners of the mine with the Brazilian company Vale, said it was offering support.

"Words cannot describe the impact of this tragedy on the employees and contractors of Samarco, their families and the community," said BHP Billiton chairman Jac Nasser.

"Our thoughts are with the people of Samarco, the affected community and with the people of Brazil."

- Child slipped away -

Meanwhile, flyers were circulated with the picture of a missing five-year old named Emanuele, who slipped from her father's arms as he ran ahead of the torrent carrying her and her two-year-old brother, the newspaper O Globo said.

"We saw him coming with the two children, but he wasn't able to hold on to them," Marlon Celio, 19, a neighbor, told the newspaper.

"We helped grab him, but lost the girl."

According to a list released by the mayor, there are five missing children.

No warning sirens went off, company officials say. Instead, they called the civil defense authorities, as well as some families and community leaders, to warn them.

Panicked villagers ran screaming toward high ground and from there watched as their houses were swallowed in a river of mud.

Besides leveling everything in its path, the avalanche caused "enormous environmental damage," said Carlos Ferreira Pinto, an investigator with the Minas Gerais state prosecutor's office.

The local Mariana miners' union said the sludge was toxic, but Samarco said it was "inert" and contained no harmful chemicals.

The head of Samarco's emergency planning operations, Germano Silva Lopes, told a news conference the company had detected a tremor, but no anomalies in the dams before they burst.

Solve problem between Christians, Muslims and Jewish in the world

Hello,
It is seen from Revelation chapter 17:7 as follows 17:7 And the angel said to me, Why were you surprised? I will make clear to you the secret of the woman, and of the beast on which she is seated, which has the seven heads and the ten horns. against which the entrance of the European parliament the secret of the woman, and of the beast on which she is seated and the same is reflected bad symbol against entire European Countries. why it was not deleted in the interest of my Christians brothers and sisters who are living in the European countries.

We are informing you in the interest of BUILDING RELATIONS AND BREAKING BARRIERS between Jewish, Christians and the Muslims in the world for the following reasons.

In the Quran verses 7:137 and 167 may kindly read and record as follows.

137. And We made the people who were considered weak to inherit the eastern parts of the land and the western parts thereof which We have blessed. And the fair Word of your Lord was fulfilled for the Children of Israel, because of their endurance. And We destroyed completely all the great works and buildings which Fir'aun (Pharaoh) and his people erected.

167. And (remember) when your Lord declared that He would certainly keep on sending against them (i.e. the Jews), till the Day of Resurrection, those who would afflict them with a humiliating torment. Verily, your Lord is Quick in Retribution (for the disobedient, wicked) and certainly He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful (for the obedient and those who beg Allah's Forgiveness).

Its rather unfortunate that Israel Government failed to approach the UN council and all other countries in the world to declare Palestinian as a State in the Israel in view of the Quran verses 7:137 in the interest of unity in the world.

Besides,Quran verse 7:167 is similar to Zechariah verse 12:2 may look into by all the Jewish in the world.

It is pertinent to note that Genesis verse 16:12,Zechariah 12:2 and Psalms

verse 83 are relating to Jewish, but not relating to Christians

the aforesaid verses are came into force, When no Christians

and Muslims were lived and it cannot said that two verses are

indicated to the Muslims by the Christians. As a matter of fact,

between Christians and Muslims, there is no co-operations.

In support of the above verses every Christians can interpret Zechariah verse which is relating to Jewish and Isreal and Palestine.

Every Christians can look into the matter in the interest

Co-operation between Christians and Muslims in the world.

I am afraid, dear Joyce, what both Myrna and you are talking about is our times' disease.

Yes Miguel you are right of course. These things would be so much easier to deal with if more people would recognize that we are not each others' enemy rather pawns being moved across the chess boards at the hands of the players.

Exclusive - Investigators '90 percent sure' of bomb on crashed Russian plane

Reuters

By Ahmed Mohamed Hassan and Michael Georgy

CAIRO (Reuters) - Investigators of the Russian plane crash in Egypt are "90 percent sure" the noise heard in the final second of a cockpit recording was an explosion caused by a bomb, a member of the investigation team told Reuters on Sunday.

The Airbus A321 crashed 23 minutes after taking off from the Sharm al-Sheikh tourist resort eight days ago, killing all 224 passengers and crew. Islamic State militants fighting Egyptian security forces in Sinai said they brought it down.

"The indications and analysis so far of the sound on the black box indicate it was a bomb," said the Egyptian investigation team member, who asked not to be named due to sensitivities. "We are 90 percent sure it was a bomb."

His comments reflect a higher degree of certainty about the cause of the crash than the investigation committee has so far declared in public.

Lead investigator Ayman al-Muqaddam announced on Saturday that the plane appeared to have broken up in mid-air while it was being flown on auto-pilot, and that a noise had been heard in the last second of the cockpit recording. But he said it was too soon to draw conclusions about why the plane crashed.

Confirmation that militants brought down the airliner could have a devastating impact on Egypt's lucrative tourist industry, which has suffered from years of political turmoil and was hit last week when Russia, Turkey and several European countries suspended flights to Sharm al-Sheikh and other destinations.

It could also mark a new strategy by the hardline Islamic State group which holds large parts of Syria and Iraq.

Asked to explain the remaining 10 percent margin of doubt, the investigator declined to elaborate, but Muqaddam cited other possibilities on Saturday including a fuel explosion, metal fatigue in the plane or lithium batteries overheating.

He said debris was scattered over a 13-km (8-mile) area "which is consistent with an in-flight break-up".

"GAME CHANGER"

"What happened in Sharm al-Sheikh last week, and to a lesser extent with the ... (Germanwings) aircraft, are game changers for our industry," Emirates Airlines President Tim Clark said, referring to the crash of a Germanwings airliner in the French Alps in March, believed crashed deliberately by its co-pilot.

"They have to be addressed at industry level because no doubt the countries -- U.S., Europe -- I would think will make some fairly stringent, draconian demands on the way aviation works with security," he said at the Dubai Airshow.

Clark said he had ordered a security review but was not suspending any flights as a result of the disaster. Emirates does not operate regular flights to Sharm al-Sheikh.

British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond also said the incident could lead to changes in flight security.

"If this turns out to be a device planted by an ISIL operative or by somebody inspired by ISIL, then clearly we will have to look again at the level of security we expect to see in airports in areas where ISIL is active," Hammond told the BBC.

Islamic State, which wants to establish a caliphate in the Middle East, is also called ISIS or ISIL.

Islamic State militants fighting security forces in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula have said they brought down the aircraft as revenge for Russian air strikes against Islamist fighters in Syria. They said they would eventually tell the world how they carried out the attack.

If the group was responsible, it would have carried out one of the highest profile killings since al Qaeda flew passenger planes into New York's World Trade Center in September 2001.

Russia has returned 11,000 of its tourists from Egypt in the last 24 hours, RIA news agency said on Sunday, a fraction of the 80,000 Russians who were stranded by the Kremlin's decision on Friday to halt all flights to Egypt.

In St Petersburg, where the flight was headed on Oct. 31, the bell of St Isaac's Cathedral rang 224 times and a service was held in memory of the victims.

Russia has sent specialists to conduct a safety audit of Egypt's airports and to provide recommendations on additional measures, Arkady Dvorkovich, deputy prime minister, was quoted as saying by Russian agencies.

Dvorkovich, the head of a government group created on Friday to deal with suspended flights to Egypt, added a second group was going to Egypt on Sunday and a third would be sent later.

A British official said on Saturday it could take 10 days for all British tourists to be flown home.
