Why are commercial airline pilots suddenly passing out or dying at the wheel?

Friday, October 23, 2015 by: J. D. Heyes

(NaturalNews) Just recently, and quite unusually, back-to-back mishaps involving two commercial airline pilots occurred mid-flight.

The first incident, as reported by CBS News, involved an American Airlines pilot who died midair from as yet unknown causes.

According to one of the network's local affiliates, the pilot, identified as Michael Johnston of West Jordan, Utah, was commanding a flight from Boston to Phoenix on October 5. Reports said he first became ill during the flight and later died in the cockpit, with the co-pilot safely landing the plane after it diverted to Syracuse, New York.

Johnston's wife said her husband likely died of a heart attack; however, as of this writing, no official autopsy confirmation of that claim has yet been reported.

In what could only be deemed a similar and highly unlikely occurrence, the next day, a United Airlines co-pilot suddenly lost consciousness in the cockpit aboard a flight from Houston to San Francisco, forcing the plane to be diverted to Albuquerque International Su1nport in New Mexico.

A spokesperson for United later told the local CBS affiliate in an email that "United flight 1614...diverted to Albuquerque this morning when a crew member became ill. The aircraft landed safely. We're working to get the customers to their final destinations."

Mystery behind the double mishap

What's going on? Airline pilots don't just die or fall unconscious behind the stick. They are supposed to be rigorously examined for health issues on a regular basis and grounded if anything is found to be out of order. In fact, the Federal Aviation Administration noted that only seven pilots for U.S. airlines and one charter pilot have died during flights since 1994, according to CBS News.

As for Johnston, 57, he had been flying commercially for more than 25 years already. Although greatly experienced in his field, Johnston, according to his wife, has had double bypass heart surgery in 2006. Since then, he had been required to get a physical every six months to make sure he was still healthy enough to continue with his duties.

"He has had problems with his heart," Johnston's wife told KUTV. "But he seemed perfectly fine."

As CBS News further reported:

"CBS affiliate WTVH in Syracuse reports Flight 550 left Phoenix Sky Harbor International airport last night and was scheduled to land in Boston at 8 a.m. The plane ended up landing safely in Syracuse at about 7:10 a.m."

Co-pilot took over the situation

In an audio from the cockpit obtained by CBS Boston, via LiveATC.net, a site that provides live air traffic control broadcasts, the co-pilot was heard contacting the control tower:

"A medical emergency. Captain is incapacitated, request handling for runway one zero landing."

There were 147 passengers on board the Airbus 320, also known as US Airways Flight 550.

"Describing the incident to reporters in Boston, passengers said there was a quick descent, they felt some turbulence and then a member of the flight crew announced that the captain wasn't feeling well," CBS News reported.

Other passengers recounted a hard landing in Syracuse, and that at the time, they were not told why the plane had been diverted. Nevertheless, they praised the co-pilot who appeared unfazed throughout the ordeal.

"This is a terribly sad event and American Airlines is focused on caring for the pilot's family at this time, as well as the American Airlines staff and passengers on board the flight," the airline spokeswoman said.

According to Globalnews.ca, when there is a death or illness in the cockpit of a commercial aircraft, the co-pilot takes over and begins to initiate emergency measures, such as notifying the control tower, getting emergency personnel in place and making arrangements to land the plane by finding out where to divert.

UPDATE: A local Fox affiliate reported that an autopsy revealed that Johnston died from "natural causes." No word yet on why the United pilot became ill.

New Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Supports Unlimited Abortions Up to Birth

STEVEN ERTELT OCT 20, 2015 | 4:40PM

Abortion activist Justin Trudeau and his Liberal Party swept pro-abortion Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Conservative Party from office in Monday’s vote in Canada. Although Harper was no friend to pro-life advocates looking for even minor protections for unborn children from abortion, Trudeau is, amazingly, even worse.

Trudeau's abortion views are so extreme that he said, last year, abortion should be more important than whether members of the Canadian parliament can vote their conscience. And he essentially prohibited pro-life members of the Liberal Party.

Leading pro-life groups are saddened by what Trudeau’s election will mean for Canada.

“For the first time in Canadian history, we have the leader of the Liberal Party of Canada forcing his entire caucus to hold his personal views on abortion” said Alissa Golob, Youth Coordinator for CLC and one of the campaign’s main organizers. “Not only that, but Justin Trudeau is ignoring and discriminating against the majority of Canadians who support abortion restrictions, by proclaiming they are not welcome to run for the Liberal Party of Canada.”

Mike Schouten of the pro-life group We Need a Law, writing at LifeNews, said before the election that Trudeau would be one of the most ardent abrotion activists in recent Canadian history if elected.

The Liberal leader wants to make abortion an election issue and for well over a year now has been intentionally misleading Canadians by stating that abortion is a Charter right and his is the “party of the Charter”.

Mr. Trudeau, like many Canadians, believes in a woman’s right to choose abortion. The notion we should celebrate that Canada allows abortion for any reason at any point in a pregnancy is lamentable. The Charter nowhere grants a right to abortion and the Supreme Court of Canada has never interpreted it to allow for unregulated abortion. Rather, they have looked to Parliament to pass regulations that are constitutional and protect the foetus at some point in its development.

Schouten says Trudeau’s extreme abortion position puts him on the same side as some of the worst human rights abusers that push sex-selection abortions.

For example, is Mr. Trudeau aware that in Germany and Australia women have the right to choose even though those countries have long-established abortion regulations? These regulations prevent the termination of foetuses in the latter stages of pregnancy or abortions simply because of a preferred gender. In other words women don’t have the right to choose “at all costs” and there is a recognition that pre-born human rights need to be protected at some point. The refusal by Parliament to put forward responsible measures which would regulate abortion leaves Canada in company of only China and North Korea.

The pro-life Canadian suggests that Trudeau is even out of step with his own father’s politics on abortion.

Trudeau’s own father also understood well that a woman’s right to abortion “at all costs” was not something he could support. In speaking to the Montreal Star in 1972 Trudeau senior quipped, “The foetus is not your body; it’s someone else’s body. And if you kill it you’ll have to explain.” Not to suggest Justin be bound by what his father says, the elder Trudeau was simply relaying a scientific fact – one that his son seems completely ignorant of.

Canadian women will legally be allowed to end their pregnancies for the foreseeable future, but regulations are necessary and it’s time that Canada took steps to protect pre-born human rights. Laws restricting abortion to a certain stage of pregnancy or prohibiting it for sex-selective purposes will not take away a woman’s right to choose; rather regulations such as these would better reflect our constitutional obligations towards children in the womb and bring us in line with international standards.

Russian Warplanes Destroyed 819 ISIL Targets in Syria Since Operation Began

TEHRAN (FNA)- The Russian air group in Syria has carried out 934 sorties for less than a month, the General Staff said Thursday.

Since the beginning of its operation in Syria on September 30, the Russian Aerospace Forces have carried out 934 sorties in Syria, destroying a total of 819 terrorist facilities, the Russian General Staff said Thursday.

Terrorists in Syria have lost striking capabilities amid the Russian airstrikes and are deserting en masse to Turkey and Jordan, Andrey Kartapolov, head of the Russian General Staff Main Operations Directorate said.

"The Syrian Army continues its offensive in the provinces of Aleppo, Latakia, Idlib, Homs, and Damascus," Kartapolov said.

"Combat opeartions are being conducted around those locations where the Russian aviation is not used, while the Syrian Army uses its heavy artillery against concealed fire units," he elaborated.

Russian forces have struck a bridge over the Euphrates river in Syria's Deir Ezzur province, cutting off supplies for ISIL militants from Iraq, Kartapolov said.

"A key part of the supply chain is a bridge across the Euphrates river in the region of Deir Ezzur. Today, Russian pilots carried out a surgical strike on this object, which resulted in the bridge becoming impossible to use for terrorists," he told reporters.

According to Kartapolov, this supply route from Iraq was located by Russian drones.

"I wish to underline that the strike was carried out in an area, which, according to our American partners, is under the complete control of ISIL units," he noted.

Some field commanders are beginning to propose local ceasefires and negotiations to the Syrian Army, he added.

Russia started precision airstrikes against ISIL targets in Syria on September 30, following a request from Syria's internationally recognized government. The Russian airstrikes hit targets that are chosen based on intelligence collected by Russia, Syria, Iraq and Iran.

RT: Russia nearly done building its biggest Arctic military base

Russia has almost finished building a new jumbo Arctic military base on Kotelny Island, off the eastern Siberian coast. There was no such base there in Soviet times, Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said.

“We are not keeping this a secret: we have practically built a base on the Novosibirsk Islands, the Island of Kotelny,” said Shoigu. “This is a big military base, there was no such base there in the Soviet period.”

Kotelny is the largest island in the Novosibirsk Archipelago, located in the Laptev Sea. Back in the Soviet days the military deployed an observation post and a radar station there. With the fall of the USSR, all the troops were eventually withdrawn leaving behind only a civilian meteorological station.

After decades of desolation, the former military base is being rebuilt. Engineers of the Russian Northern Fleet began construction works in 2013, cleaning up rusty barrels and broken vehicles abandoned on the island, and constructing among other things, a landing strip for supplies to be airlifted rather than air-dropped.

The temporary base has become the new home for the 99th Arctic tactical group, the Navy’s permanent unit serving at the barely livable island, much of which is a flat rocky bed of pebbles covering a layer of permafrost.

Last year RT traveled to Kotelny with a fleet of warships and support ships that delivered the troops and their military hardware, including brand new armored vehicles.

“The conditions are certainly harsh, but we are coping. We have housing and equipment, so we’ll survive just fine,” Yury Popov, an engineer with the 99th told RT’s Murad Gazdiev.

Russian troops will be deployed in the Arctic by 2018, equipped with all the necessary high-tech weaponry, the minister said. A series of smaller bases would also be created on Wrangel Island, on the eastern coast of Chukotka, on the Kuril Islands and at Cape Schmidt.

The construction of six airfields will be also finished in 2016-2017.

Restoration of the Russian military infrastructure in the Arctic began in 2012. The Defense Ministry is building or restoring facilities on the continent and the Arctic islands, from Franz Josef Land to the Bering Strait. In addition to construction and repair works, the military is busy eliminating the consequences of pollution in the Arctic.

China Is Canceling the Debt of the World’s Most Impoverished Nations

Since the 1990s, a major part of Chinese foreign policy has been to invest in developing countries around the world.

This includes private investments, like the billion-dollar solar project being spearheaded by a
Chinese energy company in Ghana or the multibillion-dollar canal being built by a Chinese infrastructure firm in Nicaragua.

It also includes public investment projects like the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, which was launched earlier this year to help fund infrastructure projects in impoverished Asian countries (and to reduce the amount of influence wielded by the U.S.-led investment banks).

On Saturday, Chinese President Xi Jinping made yet another commitment to help economic growth in the developing world, announcing that China would be canceling the debts of the world’s least developed countries.

President Xi made the announcement while addressing a United Nations summit on global development goals. During his speech, he also pledged to establish a $2 billion fund dedicated to improving conditions in the most impoverished countries around the world.

“Looking around the world, the peace and development remain the two major themes of the times,”

President Xi told attendees at the summit in New York. He continued,

“To solve various global challenges, including the recent refugee crisis in Europe, the fundamental solutions lie in seeking peace and realising development. Facing with various challenges and difficulties, we must keep hold of the key of the development. Only the development can eliminate the causes of the conflicts.”

Xi’s speech came a day after the UN unveiled its new Global Goals for Sustainable Development, an ambitious plan that aims to eradicate poverty and hunger in the next 15 years.

Coincidentally, China played a key role in helping the UN achieve its previous poverty reduction goals as well — BBC correspondent James Robbins explains,

It was China’s extraordinary record shifting so many families out the ranks of the poor which ensured that the overall global record in poverty reduction under the previous Millennium Development Goals was substantial.

China’s new pledge of financial support, as well as its promise to forgive the debts of the world’s poorest countries, show a continued commitment to the goal of reducing poverty worldwide.

“The world is going through a historical process of accelerated evolution. The sunshine of peace, development and progress will be powerful enough to penetrate the clouds of war, poverty and backwardness,”

President Xi said.
