Canada withdrawing fighter jets from Iraq, Syria, Trudeau tells Obama

AFP

Ottawa (AFP) - Canada's prime minister-elect Justin Trudeau said Tuesday he told US President Barack Obama that Canadian fighter jets would withdraw from fighting the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria.

But he gave no timeline.

"About an hour ago I spoke with President Obama," Trudeau told a press conference.

While Canada remains "a strong member of the coalition against ISIL," Trudeau said he made clear to the US leader "the commitments I have made around ending the combat mission."

Canada last year deployed CF-18 fighter jets to the region until March 2016, as well as about 70 special forces troops to train Kurds in northern Iraq.

During the campaign, Trudeau pledged to bring home the fighter jets and end its combat mission. But he vowed to keep military trainers in place.

His new Liberal government will be "moving forward with our campaign commitments in a responsible fashion," Trudeau said.

"We want to ensure that the transition is done in an orderly fashion."

Slovenia Allows Passage of 8,000 Refugees Before Tougher Border Law Change

By

An officer lifts up police cordon tape to help migrants pass under as they make their way to a waiting bus in Brezice, Slovenia October 19.

Slovenia allowed the passage of approximately 8,000 refugees into its territory from Croatia on Monday despite previously pledging to take only 2,500 a day.

The move comes the day before Slovenia's parliament will pass new laws that enable the army to guard its borders as the country struggles to keep up with an inflow of refugees that has "exceeded all manageable possibilities."

Previous laws in Slovenia permitted the army to intervene only to provide technical and logistical support, according to the
AFP news agency. Specific details of an amendment to the law have not been released, but a government statement said it would permit soldiers to help in the crisis "under very specific circumstances."

Prime Minister Miro Cerar denied he was calling a state of emergency and told Radio Slovenia: "This is not about enforcing an extraordinary condition, it is about strengthening control on the border."

The government issued a statement calling on other EU member states to assist the refugee situation on its borders because of the size of the country.

"Slovenia is the smallest country on the Balkan migration route and has therefore limited possibilities of border control and accommodating migrants," the government said in a statement seen by
Reuters. "Therefore Slovenia publicly calls upon the (EU) member states and the European institutions to actively engage in taking over this burden."

Slovenia has a population of 2 million people and shares its borders with Austria, Croatia, Hungary and Italy.

The migrants flowed to Slovenia's borders after Hungary closed its southern border for security reasons, forcing them to move through Croatia to find another entry point into the EU's Schengen Area, where freedom of movement across borders is permitted.

Croatia subsequently opened its border on Monday because of the backlog of migrants attempting to exit the country, stranded in muddy and wet conditions as winter approaches. Of the migrants to enter into Slovenia on Monday, 2,000 continued their journeys into Austria.

More than 600,000 refugees have entered Europe this year already, triple the number that reached the continent in 2014, in what is the
greatest flow of asylum seekers in Europe since the Second World War.

Israelis Turn to Self-Defense as Anxiety Rises Over Knife Attacks

By

A masked Palestinian protester holds a knife during a protest near the Israeli border fence in northeast Gaza October 9, 2015.

Updated | Business is booming at the Haboleshet Spy Shop in central Tel Aviv. Mor, who has worked for six months at the self-defense store, says customers laugh when he tells them that the shop's stock of pepper spray, tasers and batons is sold out. The past two weeks have been the "craziest and busiest time," Mor says in a phone interview with Newsweek.

The shop, one of the only stores that stocks self-defense equipment in Israel's largest city, is selling 20 to 40 batons and 50 to 100 canisters of pepper spray a day, Mor says. In previous times, that would have amounted to three weeks' worth of stock.

The amused reaction of Mor's customers masks a growing anxiety over the recent wave of stabbings committed by Palestinians on Israel's streets. Eight Israelis have been killed and dozens wounded in the
knife attacks across the country in the past two weeks and now worried civilians are turning to self-defense measures in greater numbers. Dozens of Palestinians, including some attackers, have also been killed in subsequent violence.

Israeli authorities blame the spate of attacks on what they say is incitement by the Palestinian leadership and social media networks. Officials in Ramallah say Palestinians are turning to knives because they wish to take matters into their own hands to fight perceived Israeli violations. They attribute the attacks to escalating tensions at the Jerusalem holy site known as the Temple Mount to Jews and Al-Haram al-Sharif to Muslims, as well as a deeper malaise among Palestinians over negotiations on peace and independence.

Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld, speaking to
Newsweek by phone from Jerusalem on Wednesday, says that while there are no official statistics on knife attacks against Israeli Jews to compare with the previous year, there has been an "obvious" rise in 2015. Eighteen knife attacks have been carried out in the previous 10 days alone, he says.

An armed man walks in the centre of Jerusalem October 19. A recent spate of knife attacks has made residents uneasy.

Mor, at the Haboleshet store, says he's not surprised about the sudden influx of customers."Most of them come and say: 'I am here because my wife sent me and she told me without pepper spray you are not coming back home,'" he says. He recalls one case of a bus driver sent to the store by his family after he was caught up in an attack on board his vehicle, having to distract the Palestinian man before police arrived at the scene. "Mostly people are just buying it to calm themselves or other ones who worry about [knife attacks]."

The owners of the store, who declined to comment but authorised Mor to speak to
Newsweek, responded to the demand for pepper spray by reducing its price in a bid to ensure anyone who felt the need to buy it could do so. The price of a small canister dropped from 50 shekels (approximately $13) to 45 ($12); the larger size from 160 shekels ($42) to 140 ($37). The shop also sells the more expensive option of "shockers," or tasers, disguised as flashlights for 350 shekels ($92) and iPhones for 450 shekels ($118.)

As anxieties spread across Israel, sales of self-defense items have spiked elsewhere too. Long lines were
reported at the L.H.B. gun store in Tel Aviv last week, with weapons sales up 30 percent and customers eager to obtain a gun license or use the shop's shooting range. David Gottlieb, the manager of the Lemetayel Odafim backpacker shop in Jerusalem, told Israeli daily newspaper Haaretz on Monday that pepper spray sales have increased 500 percent.

"Instead of buying backpacks and sleeping bags, they're concentrating on self-defense, asking us for clubs and brass knuckles," Gottlieb told Haaretz. "We don't sell this and it's also not legal to carry it outside the home, but the item in most demand over the past 48 hours is without question pepper spray."

A number of Israelis have been creative in their defense against Palestinian stabbing attacks. People have used umbrellas and selfie sticks to defend themselves, according to
reports, and a woman on a bus in Jerusalem was pictured with a rolling pin in her bag.

Israelis are turning to each other for self-defense help as well, sharing tips on social media and extending a helping hand to fellow citizens. The Facebook group
"Secret Tel Aviv" features hundreds of posts from the city's residents asking where they can buy pepper spray, whether they can carry a knife in public and for general self-defense advice.

In a popular post, a man who identifies himself as a security expert posted a list of tips for civilians: Escape is the best form of defense; always carry an umbrella and pepper spray; and always be aware of your surroundings.

Many Israeli self-defense instructors are also advertising their businesses on social media. While some are attempting to capitalize on rising fears over the deteriorating security situation, others are helping their fellow Israelis for free. On the same Facebook group, Josh Carr, an expert in the Israeli martial art Krav Maga, offered free self-defense classes to the residents of Tel Aviv in response to the attacks and was subsequently inundated with requests, he tells
Newsweek by email.

"My response was way over 1,000 overnight and it's still coming," he says. "It was a total surprise, I can't keep up with all of them. I've been messaged from all over the country and I have already started giving free classes in different locations."

Jewish youths take part in an Israeli martial arts training lesson in Mevasseret Zion, near Jerusalem, October 14, 2013. More Israelis are now attending self-defense classes.

Analysts believe that Israelis are taking matters so seriously because the knife attacks are so unpredictable. But others attribute the rush for self-defense to a wider suspicion of the Arab-Israeli population in the aftermath of the deadly incidents.

"The atmosphere right now is that you cannot trust the Arabs, whoever he is," Major General Amnon Reshef, founder and director of Commanders for Israel's Security, a grouping of ex-Israeli security leaders, says by phone from Tel Aviv. "It's not that they are terrorists. It might be somebody that is working with you."

He added: "How can I trust the Arab guy who is working in the supermarket? How can I trust the Arab guy who is working with me in McDonalds? I consider him as my friend but who knows what will be in a couple of minutes? Therefore, all around the country, people are afraid."

In the self-defense store, however, Mor refuses to celebrate the upsurge in business. He remains saddened and angered by the rush to empty his shelves.

"I see what this situation is doing," he says. "A lot of Israelis are coming in here and wasting their hard-earned money [on equipment] that they will probably never use. It's my decision to not buy anything. It annoys me. It's not only that they are succeeding in killing us but it's also that they are succeeding in hurting our wallets."

This story has been updated to make clear that all interviews were conducted remotely by phone or email.

Back to the Future, CERN and Focus

Posted October 19, 2015 by laurabruno

Just a quick heads up that CERN (the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland) is supposedly set to power up to its highest level ever sometime this week. Interestingly, the “future” date in the “Back to the Future” movie series just happens to be 10/21/2015. Coincidence? Maybe, but you can find a lot of 9/11 predictive programming in those films, too.

In any case, people who’ve read my article, “Alternative Views and Considerations about CERN,”know that I hold less apocalyptic views about this project than many others do. While I do not in any way endorse the hubris of scientists recklessly messing around with powers they don’t understand, failing to take responsibility for whatever they might unleash in this or other dimensions, ever the practical mystic, I pay attention to such fire ups, as individuals can use focus to direct potential chaos into more preferred realities.

As such, I’d like to issue a supplemental encouragement to the dire video posted below: if you don’t like something in your reality, get clear about what you prefer. Imagine that improved version; take at least one symbolic or tangible step to anchor your intention to move in that direction; and allow a willing suspension of disbelief if that reality suddenly shifts into being later this week. Sure, it’s a long shot, but rather than cowering like victims or attempting to “make something go wrong with CERN” (um, talk about unpredictable!), I’d suggest treating it like a shaken up snow globe. Except you can influence the outcome.

If your little town in Europe’s being overwhelmed by rapists and soldiers posing as refugees, kicking out residents, attacking aid workers and throwing feces at buses, this week offers an extra chance for you to get a clear picture, feeling, scent, taste, sound and vibration of the life you would prefer. Not just the way things were, or “not this,” but the way things could be in the best possible scenarios. If you’re sitting in poverty and poor health, then exercise that great imagination of yours and use the power phrase, “I wonder what would happen if I had enough health and wealth — enough to spare and enough to share.” If you’ve felt disconnected from the Earth, uninspired, or generally out of sorts, then activate your intention totune in and bring forth beauty, harmony, peace and joy. You can use magazine images, specific tarot cards, crystals and/or other symbols, mantras, Runes or mudras to help amplify your intended vibration and energy.

Maybe nothing will happen on 10/21/2015, but as long as the boys insist on playing with their toys, we might as well make the best of it. Blessed Be
