Kidnapped 'Chibok girl' reportedly flees Boko Haram, says others alive

One of the hundreds of Christian schoolgirls kidnapped 18 months ago by Boko Haram reportedly made it out of the Nigerian terrorist group's stronghold and told of her fellow captives' ongoing misery, but a military official disputed the claim.

The April 14, 2014, kidnapping of 276 girls from the northern town of Chibok prompted international headlines and a social media campaign made prominent by First Lady Michelle Obama calling for authorities to "Bring back our girls." While dozens fled in the initial months following capture, the unidentified girl would be the most recent victim to escape the infamous Islamic terror group's clutches. According to local reports, she said dozens of girls are still alive, many pregnant from rape and riddled with disease.

"All of us were forced to become Muslims but kept in camps far from each other," the girl reportedly told The Vanguard. "You can only see and recognize those in your camp as any of us who refused being Islamized was either beheaded or shot at point blank range."

"All of us were forced to become Muslims but kept in camps far from each other."

- Reported Boko Haram victim

The report claimed the girl was able to escape from her captors at a Boko Haram camp in the dense Sambisa forest in the northern Borno state, near Chad, and run into the safety of local herdsman.

"When the Fulani herdsman saw the girl in the bush and questioned her about her mission, she narrated her experience, which made the herdsman to take her to the soldiers in that area,” an unidentified source reportedly told the Nigerian newspaper. “With her escape, there are now 59 of the girls left in her camp."

Although The Vangaurd reported that the girl was taken to a local military base for debriefing, a military official called dismissed the claim as "a spurious report" that "should be disregarded."

The issue could be a sensitive one, as the Nigerian military has been under intense pressure to save the girls and crack down on the terrorist group, which has committed dozens of atrocities in the northern part of the country. If an escapee has conveyed useful information, it is possible the government wanted to keep it under wraps.

The girl reportedly told authorities the remaining captives are being held in half a dozen towns located in the border communities around Lake Chad, which sits on the border of Nigeria and Chad.

Boko Haram, whose name translates to "Western education is forbidden," has pledged allegiance to ISIS, though its reach has not extended far from northern Nigeria. Although the group had committed previous mass atrocities, including an attack a month before the mass kidnapping in which 29 boys at a boarding school were locked in the building and burned alive, the Chibok incident drew unprecedented international condemnation.

Boko Haram was believed to have taken the abductees to its stronghold in the Samibisa national forest. Many of the girls are believed to have been sold into slavery.

Syria army edges south of Aleppo with Russian air cover: monitor

Beirut (AFP) - Syria's armed forces advanced south of the second city of Aleppo on Friday in a fresh ground offensive backed by Russian warplanes, a monitoring group said.

Since Moscow began its air war in support of Damascus on September 30, the Syrian army has launched assaults against rebels in at least four provinces with Russian aerial support, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Russian air cover is backing offensives by Syria's army and allied militias in the central provinces of Homs and Hama, as well as Aleppo in the north and Latakia along the coast.

On Friday, the Syrian army pushed south from the provincial capital Aleppo city, where control is divided between regime and rebels forces, as Russian air strikes pounded the villages of Al-Hader and Khan Tuman and nearby localities.

"The Syrian army started a new front on Friday and advanced to take control of the villages of Abteen and Kaddar" about 15 kilometres (12 miles) south of Aleppo city, said Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman.

He said "dozens" of Russian aerial attacks in the past 24 hours had struck the area, which is controlled by a patchwork of groups including rebels, Islamist fighters and Al-Qaeda's Syria affiliate, Al-Nusra Front.

Moscow has said its air war is targeting the Islamic State jihadist group, but rebels and their international backers say the strikes are concentrating on non-IS targets across the country.

On Thursday, the Syrian army with Russian air support fought to clear rebel fighters out of northern areas of Homs province.

But the Observatory, in a toll released on Friday, said most of those killed there in fighting the previous day were civilians.

"Eight children, 22 women, and 13 civilian men were killed in the fighting, shelling and strikes," Abdel Rahman said.

The violence also killed 17 rebel fighters, he added.

The Britain-based monitoring group said Russian warplanes on Friday struck rebel positions in Latakia, home to President Bashar al-Assad's ancestral village.

More than 245,000 people have been killed since Syria's conflict began in March 2011.

Russia, US agree on all technical questions over Syria flight safety - Russian military

Russia’s Defense Ministry said that it will soon sign an agreement on flight safety over Syria with Pentagon after the sides agreed on all the necessary technical issues.

"All technical matters have already been agreed upon, with Russian and US lawyers now cross checking the text of the document," Colonel-General Andrey Kartapolov told a media briefing on Friday.

According to Kartapolov, the memorandum on flight safety over Syria will be signed by Moscow and Washington “in the very near future."

The Defense Ministry and Pentagon have already held three video-conferences discussing the agreement, he added.

This will provide conditions for the prevention of specific situations that might cause some kind of an accident in the Syrian airspace during air operations by the Russia and the coalition partners,” Kartapolov stressed.

He also repeated that Moscow is ready to extend cooperation on avoiding conflict in the skies over Syria with the US and all other concerned parties.

Kartapolov also said that the Defense Ministry has established direct contact with the Turkish military to avoid incidents with Russian flights near the Turkish border.

Earlier on Friday, the Turkish military said it had shot down an unmanned aircraft on the Syrian border.

All Russian military planes have safely returned to base in Syria after combat missions, with all drones operating as planned, Moscow said after the Turkish announcement.

A hotline between a Russian Air Force base in Syria and the Israeli Air Force command center has also been established in order to coordinate flights over Syria, the spokesman stressed.

On Thursday and Friday, the Russians and the Israelis held joint training to avoid incidents in Syrian airspace, Kartapolov added.

Natural News 10-15-15… “Italy and Austria join growing list of countries banning GMO agriculture”

gmo_NOT_18More “getting out of GMO” news from Europe.

————————————————-

Italy and Austria join growing list of countries banning GMO agriculture

(NaturalNews) European nations are leading the world in rejecting genetically modified organisms in food and crops, with two more countries recently joining the list: Italy and Austria.

As reported by Nation of Change, Italian ministries have opted to utilize the newly created European Union rules that permit member countries to opt out of growing GM crops. Austrian officials joined in as well, with both nations making the decision to stop growing eight varieties of GM maize, which essentially amounted to a complete ban on GM crops.

The EU’s opt-out regulations were implemented earlier this year. They allow member states to decide on their own if they want to continue using GM crops or ban them altogether.

As reported by Sustainable Pulse, a number of other countries in the EU have also opted out of GM crops:

Wales: “These new rules proposed by the European Commission provide Wales with the necessary tools to maintain our cautionary approach by allowing us to control the future cultivation of GM crops in Wales,” said Welsh Deputy Minister for Farming and Food, Rebecca Evans. “It will allow us to protect the significant investment we have made in our organic sector and safeguard the agricultural land in Wales that is managed under voluntary agri-environment schemes.”

She added: “Farming and food processing businesses remain the driving force of our rural economy. Our emphasis is on competing on quality, strong branding and adding value through local processing. We, therefore, need to preserve consumer confidence and maintain our focus on a clean, green, natural environment. ”

Poland: In 2013, the Polish government actually adopted a regulation that banned GMO farming in the country, well ahead of the EU action. But once the EU approved its regulation giving member nations the right to ban if they chose, that was more than enough authority for the Polish government to act.

“Now we no longer have to explain the scientific aspects and we can already relate to social issues,” Polish Agriculture Minister Marek Sawicki said at the time of the country’s ban.

Germany: German government officials announced in late September that the country would no longer permit the cultivation of GM crops, as stated by German Agriculture Minister Christian Schmidt.

Slovenia: Slovenian Agriculture Minister Dejan Zidan said in announcing the country’s ban that “the government adopted the decision for a request for the exclusion of the entire geographical territory of Slovenia for GM maize to the EU, including the already registered variety MON 810 and seven other varieties which are in the process of registration with the European Commission. This allows me to formally send the request as the Ministry of Agriculture in accordance with the law for the exclusion of Slovenia with the regards to the cultivation of GM maize.”

Serbia: State Secretary in the Serbian Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection Danilo Golubovic recently announced the country’s GMO ban. In making the announcement, Golubovic said the decision was based on a desire to improve public health and safety.

Bulgaria: This government has decided to burnish its clean and green image by banning GM crops. As noted by Sustainable Pulse‘s director, Henry Rowlands, “Bulgaria is home to a wide variety of unique flora and fauna and is also the base of many ancient civilizations, it is with this background that Bulgarians know what is at risk when it comes to using an untested and unnecessary technology.”

European nations that have opted out of growing GM crops thus far are Latvia, France, Austria, Cyprus, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Poland, Germany, Greece, Croatia, Hungary, Slovenia and Italy, Sustainable Pulse reported.
