RE: ARE WE NOW IN THE END TIMES?

This morning, as the pope spoke at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, he called for action to help the world’s most marginalized. “Economic and social exclusion is a complete denial of human fraternity and a grave offense against human rights and the environment,” Pope Francis said. “The poorest are those who suffer most from such offenses, for three serious reasons: They are cast off by society, forced to live off what is discarded, and suffer unjustly from the abuse of the environment. They are part of today’s widespread and quietly growing ‘culture of waste.’”

But as Pope Francis calls on world leaders for justice and inclusion to help the poorest, New York City — the venue for today’s speech — has been doing just the opposite.

In the days before Pope Francis landed in New York, the city dismantled homeless encampments near places the pope will be visiting, in essence sweeping homeless people to the side. Along the pope’s route, Gothamist reported that spikes were put up where homeless people often sleep. In East Harlem, 13 blocks away from where the pope will visit Our Lady Queen of Angels School, the NYPD raided and cleared out a homeless encampment that has been home to several dozen people all summer. The Daily Mail reports:

One of the men who lives at the 125th Street camp, on the corner of Park Avenue, fumed to the New York Post: ‘F*** him,’ in reference to the pope.

“He don’t live here. We live here. How can they move me for someone coming here for a couple hours? Just because we are a subculture doesn’t mean we don’t exist.”

He added: “They ain’t no Roman Catholics here. Go to Washington Heights or something where you got Roman Catholics. This is Harlem.”

Another said: “They just kicked us out. They said, ‘Important people is coming by.'”

“They say if we don’t move, they will give us a ticket or lock us up, and they don’t want to lock us up.”

A woman who also lives at the site told the paper: “They have been coming regularly, but more now that the pope is coming.”

Unashamed, NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton told Metro New York, “We have 170 world leaders going into the United Nations, so I think it might behoove us to go up and give it a scrub … I make no apologies for cleaning the city up.”

In NYC, the number of homeless people has skyrocketed. One big reason for the increase is budget cuts towards Section 8 — i.e. affordable and public — housing, which began during the Bloomberg administration. In 2014, over the course of a year, 116,000 different people sought refuge in the city’s shelters. According to research done by the Coalition for the Homeless, “Surveys of homeless families have identified the following major immediate, triggering causes of homelessness: eviction; doubled-up or severely overcrowded housing; domestic violence; job loss; and hazardous housing conditions.”

If New York wants to take that pope guy’s words to heart, the city should
provide more safe, affordable
housing for homeless people — rather than
sweeping them to the side.

PressTV: Russia puts an end to US, Israel attacks on Syria: Analyst

Mon Sep 28, 2015 7:33AM

Russia’s presence in Syria is going to put an end to the days Pentagon and Israel had a free hand in launching attacks in the war-torn country, says a former NSA contractor.

“The movement of Russian troops into Syria is certainly very very welcome change for Syria,” said Steven D Kelley on Monday.

“But obviously this is a big problem for Pentagon, the military industrial complex and obviously Israel,” said Kelley. “Certainly Israel is very concerned about what is going on and they will not be able to bomb Damascus freely anymore; Those days are over.”

Kelley made the remarks in a phone interview with Press TV, when asked to comment on a statement made by US Secretary of State John Kerry about a need for coordinated efforts to uproot the Daesh (ISIL) Takfiri group in the Middle East.

“I think the critical thing is that all of the efforts need to be coordinated. This is not yet coordinated. I think we have concerns about how we are going to go forward,” Kerry said on Sunday.

Kelley, however, described the remarks as “insane because the United States should not be there.”

US President Barack Obama’s administration strategy in Syria has come under fire since last week, when Army Gen. Lloyd J. Austin III, head of US Central Command, admitted the Pentagon’s failure in its program to train and arm Syrian militants to combat Daesh (ISIL) terrorists.

According to US officials, Russia recently moved fighter jets, artillery units, tanks and hundreds of troops to an airport in Syria’s western province of Latakia.

Washington says Moscow is seeking to establish a military outpost in Syria to help the government in its fight against ISIL terrorists. US officials also said the deployment raises the possibility of air combat missions in the Syrian airspace.

“Russia was certainly invited in there by the legitimate elected government (of President Bashat al-Assad) and all we (the US) have done, has created the very same terrorist that we are claiming to fight,” he added.

Kelley further said, “Putin has done a very good job, very subtly show that the game that Obama is playing the Middle East is a complete farce.”

“It is going to be only even more obvious to the rest of the world that the United States and out allies are completely responsible for ISIS ( ISIL) and that any efforts that we make to try to coordinate with Russia are completely comical at last,” he concluded.

Zerohedge: Western Propaganda Machine Kicks Into Overdrive As UK Brands Assad “A Butcher”, France Bombs Syria In “Self Defense”

http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2015-09-27/western-propaganda-machine-kicks-overdrive-uk-brands-assad-butcher-france-bombs-syri

On Sunday, France proudly announced that it had launched its first strikes against ISIS targets in Syria. Here’s The New York Times:

In France’s first airstrikes against Islamic State militants in Syria, warplanes destroyed a training camp, President François Hollande announced on Sunday.

At a news conference in New York, where he had arrived for the United Nations General Assembly, Mr. Hollande said that the warplanes had attacked the training camp in eastern Syria after it had been identified by French air surveillance with help from the coalition of Western and Middle Eastern states conducting the air campaign against the Islamic State, also known as ISIS, ISIL or Daesh.

“Our forces reached their objectives: the camp was completely destroyed,” Mr. Hollande said. “Six jets were used, including five Rafales, and they were able to ensure that our operation did not have

He added that France might launch other strikes in the coming weeks if necessary, with the goal of “identifying targets that are training camps or places where we know that the Daesh terrorist group can threaten the security of our country.”

Prime Minister Manuel Valls also confirmed to reporters in southeastern France on Sunday that the airstrikes had taken place.

“We are striking Daesh in Syria because this terrorist organization prepares and organizes attacks in France from Syria, from these sanctuaries,” Mr. Valls said. “We are therefore acting in self-defense, which Article 51 of the United Nations Charter permits us to do.”

Got that? Paris needs to bomb Syria in “self defense” because clearly, a ragtag group of militants who only exist because they’re still a useful tool in Washington’s geopolitical calculus, pose a very real threat to the territorial integrity of France, one of the most influential nations on the face of the earth.

Obviously, that is absurd to the point that it’s almost not worth mentioning were it not for the fact that France’s involvement comes as Britain is also set to step up its own “anti-ISIS” air raids in Syria.

In short, both France and Britain are ramping up their involvement in Syria’s civil war just as Russia, Iran, and China are set to bolster the Assad regime. As we’ve detailed exhaustively, the West is now finding it almost impossible to maintain the narrative. Russia and Iran both have an interest in ensuring that Assad does not fall which means that by default, they also have an interest in eradicating the Sunni extremists operating in Syria. That’s extremely inconvenient for Washington and its allies given that the US has gone out of its way to portray ISIS as the greatest threat to human decency since the Third Reich. Now, Moscow, Tehran, and Damascus have effectively said the following: “Yes, you’re right, so why won’t you join us in defeating them?”

So far, the West’s response has been to suggest that somehow, Russia’s efforts to defeat anti-regime forces in Syria will serve to embolden terrorists. For instance, here’s what British think tank Royal United Services Institute has to say:

The deployment of Russian troops in Syria could end up helping Islamic State as they have been sent to areas where they are most likely to fight other groups opposed to Isis, according to a new report.

Essentially, the contention there is that Russia should not attempt to eradicate one group of extremists because in doing so, they might inadvertenlty help other extremists. If you applied that logic to sports, it would be the equivalent of saying no one should ever try to win, because by defeating one opposing team, you might indirectly improve the position of another opposing team.

As ridiculous as that is, the one thing you can say about the West and foreign policy is that things can always get more ridiculous and with that in mind, we bring you the following from U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron (via Bloomberg):

Bashar al-Assad should face a criminal trial, U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron said, while keeping open the possibility the Syrian president could temporarily remain in power to oversee a transition to a more inclusive government.

Cameron made the comments on Sunday as he flew to New York for the United Nations General Assembly, where he’ll meet with other leaders to discuss possible solutions to the 4 1/2-year conflict that has seen Islamic State take control of parts of the Middle Eastern country and led to an exodus of millions of refugees.

“People who break international law should be subject to international law,” the prime minister told reporters traveling with him. “He’s butchered his own people, he’s helped create this conflict and this migration crisis, he’s one of the great recruiting sergeants for ISIL.”

As we’ve said on a number of occasions, no one is arguing that Bashar al-Assad is the most benevolent leader in the history of statecraft, but when Western propaganda reaches the point where Syria’s President is accused of being a “butcher” and, going still further, of facilitating the recruitment of the very people who are trying to oust him, the world should start asking questions.

At this point, if you’re buying the Western narrative with regard to Syria, we suggest you refer to the clip shown below…

Pope: Bishops who covered up for abuse guilty of wrongdoing

Associated Press

WABC – NY
Pope Francis meets with US clergy sex abuse victims, visits prison

ABOARD THE PAPAL PLANE (AP) — Pope Francis has defended his words of consolation to U.S. bishops over the priest sex abuse scandal but says — for the first time — that those who covered up for abusers are guilty of wrongdoing.

In a wide-ranging press conference en route to Rome from his first-ever visit to the United States, Francis also declared conscientious objection a "human right," explained his admiration for American nuns and discussed his own star power, which was fully on display during his six-day, three-city tour.

He also invented a new Italian word to describe the exuberant reception he received in New York City: "stralimitata" — roughly, "beyond all limits."

On his last day in the U.S., Francis on Sunday met with five survivors of sexual abuse and issued a warning to bishops that they would be held accountable if they failed to protect their flocks.

"Those who covered this up are guilty," he said. "There are even some bishops who covered this up. It's something horrible."

While the Vatican has cracked down on priests who rape and molest children in recent years, it has long been accused of turning a blind eye to the bishops who moved abusers around rather than report them to police. Francis has agreed to create a tribunal in the Vatican to prosecute these bishops for abuse of office and has accepted the resignations of three U.S. bishops who mishandled abuse cases.

Francis defended his words of consolation to U.S. bishops in Washington earlier in the week, saying he wanted to acknowledge that they had suffered too. Advocates for victims had denounced his praise as tone-deaf.

"The words of comfort weren't to say 'Don't worry, it's nothing.' No, no, no. It was that 'It was so awful, and I imagine that you have wept so much,'" he said.

On Sunday, Francis directed his attention to the victims of abuse themselves, meeting with five survivors, including people who had been molested not only by priests but also abused by family members or educators. He apologized to them that often their accusations weren't taken seriously, and promised to hold bishops accountable.

Francis said he understands how a victim or a relative of a victim could refuse to forgive the priest who abused.

"I pray for them, and I don't judge them," Francis said.

He recalled that in his previous meeting with survivors of sex abuse, in July 2014, one told him that her mother had lost her faith and died an atheist after learning that a priest had violated her child.

"I understand this woman. I understand, and God who is better than me understands," Francis said. "And I am sure that God received this woman. Because what was groped and destroyed was her flesh, the flesh of her daughter. I understand. I cannot judge someone who cannot forgive."

In another issue pressing on the American church, Francis was asked about the case of Kim Davis, the Kentucky county clerk jailed for several days after she refused to issue marriage licenses to gay couples despite the Supreme Court's ruling making same-sex marriage legal nationwide. Davis said such marriages violate her Apostolic Christian faith.

Francis said he didn't know the case in detail, but he upheld conscientious objection as a human right.

"It is a right. And if a person does not allow others to be a conscientious objector, he denies a right," Francis said.

Francis said he was surprised by the warmth of the welcome he received in the U.S. despite criticism from conservatives over his environmental and economic messages.

"In Washington, it was a warm welcome, but a bit more formal," Francis said. "In New York, a bit 'beyond all limits.'"

"In Philadelphia, very expressive. Different ways, but the same welcome."

He said he was also impressed by the piety of Americans and gave thanks there were no incidents during the trip.

"No provocations, no challenges," he said. "They were all well-behaved, normal. No insults, nothing bad."

Conservative American commentators had been deeply critical of Francis' priorities prior to the trip, blasting his eco-focus as flawed and even criticizing his decision to streamline the church's annulment process by saying it amounted to a "Catholic divorce."

Francis denied the change would facilitate divorce, saying it merely simplified the church's process for determining if a marriage was valid.

Francis once again pronounced his admiration for American nuns, saying they had worked "marvels" in education and health care in the United States and were simply "great."

"The people of the United States love their sisters," Francis said. "I don't know how much they love their priests, but they love their nuns. And they are great. They are great, great women."

His praise was noteworthy, given the Vatican under his predecessor had launched a crackdown on the largest umbrella group of U.S. sisters, accusing them of straying from orthodoxy and not emphasizing doctrine enough. Under Francis, the takeover ended two years early without any major changes. A separate Vatican investigation into the quality of life of America's sisters similarly ended up thanking them for their selfless service.

Francis on two occasions during the trip gave the sisters public recognition and thanks. He also visited with one group of nuns, the Little Sisters of the Poor, who have challenged the Obama administration's health care insurance mandate.

After speeches in Congress and at the United Nations, and deeply moving gestures visiting with the homeless, immigrants, prison inmates and schoolchildren, it was suggested to Francis that he had become something of a "star" in America.

Francis dismissed the idea, saying power is a passing thing, and that true power is to serve others.

"I must still go forward on this path of service because I feel like I haven't done all I can," he said.

And besides, he said, stars eventually fade away.

"Being a servant to the servant of God is beautiful. And it doesn't fade away."

Russian Delegation Walk Out On Ukrainian President's U.N. Speech

By

Petro Poroshenko, President of Ukraine addresses a plenary meeting of the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit 2015 at the United Nations headquarters in Manhattan, New York September 27.

The Russian delegation to the U.N. walked out of the New York assembly during Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko's speech, one of the delegates told Russian state news agency
Itar-Tass.

"We left the hall as a symbol of protest against the openly politicized and aggressive speech, which was totally not in accordance with the theme of the summit," an anonymous but high-ranking Russian diplomat told Tass.

According to him, only one Russian delegate remained in the room while the Ukrainian leader spoke on Sunday. When asked why Russia's delegation did not all leave, the diplomat defended the decision to have at least one representative sit through Poroshenko's speech, saying, "The Russian side is accustomed to listening to its opponents and not leaving their public appearances entirely without attention."

Poroshenko's speech,
published in full on the Ukrainian president's website, makes several references to the conflict in the east of the country that may have invoked the ire of the Russian delegation.

In the speech, the Ukrainian president said that Ukraine loses about $5 million a day from state funds because of the war in its eastern regions. He also estimated that the country has lost around one fifth of its economic potential because of damage to critical infrastructure during fighting.

Poroshenko blamed "Russia's military action against Ukraine" for increasing environmental hazards in Ukrainian territory and for heightening the risk of social isolation for Ukrainian people. He also said the "treacherous Russian annexation of Crimea and aggression on Donbas" had led to the deaths of thousands of people.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is
due to meet his U.S. counterpart, Barack Obama on Monday, and according to the White House spokesperson, Obama is keen to highlight Russia's role in the Ukrainian crisis,

Russia refuses to refer to its actions in Crimea as an "annexation," and Russian officials, lawmakers and state media instead use the terms "reunification" or "adhesion." Russia also denies sending any troops or lethal assistance to separatist forces in eastern Ukraine, despite evidence of the contrary showcased by
Ukraine, OSCE and international NGOs.
