'With war one always loses:' Pope Francis calls for nuclear weapons ban

Published time: 9 Aug, 2015 19:26

The atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki 70 year ago is ‘a permanent warning to humanity’ to reject war and ban weapons of mass destruction, Pope Francis said.

“Seventy years ago, on the sixth and the ninth of August 1945, the terrible atomic bomb attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki took place. Even after so many years, this tragic event still arouses horror and revulsion,”
he told the faithful in his weekly Angelus address at St. Peter’s Square.

The pope said that the attacks are a symbol of the “enormous power of humanity” when people misuse scientific and technical progress.

[This event] serves as a lasting warning to humanity so that it rejects forever war and bans nuclear weapons and all arms of mass destruction,” the pope said.

“May one cry rise up from every land, ‘No’ to war and violence and ‘Yes’ to dialogue and to peace. With war one always loses. The only way to win a war is never to wage it,” was his conclusion.

Pope Francis also expressed deep concern about the situation in El Salvador where people suffer from famine, the economic crisis, social clashes and growing violence.

On August 6 and August 9 1945, the USA dropped atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki respectivley. These attacks killed almost 250,000 people, with many of them dying from radiation sickness months, and even years after the bombing.

UN Chief Calls for Getting Rid of Nuclear Weapons
BY ON ·

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged Sunday to get rid of nuclear weapons, thus honoring the legacy of the surviving victims of nuclear bombings in Japan.

(Sputnik) UNITED NATIONS – On Sunday, Ban visited the memorial for the 70th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki by the United States.

“As the average age of the hibakusha [the surviving victims of nuclear bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki]passes 80, I feel a growing sense of urgency to honor their legacy by finally ridding the world of nuclear weapons. The United Nations will mobilize the world’s peoples to achieve this goal,” Ban said.

In 1945, the United States dropped two atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, on August 6 and 9 respectively. The bomb Little Boy killed about 140,000 residents of the Hiroshima city, and the bomb Fat Man claimed the lives of some 70,000 people in Nagasaki.

The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki are the only attacks with nuclear weapons in the history of warfare.

Ban added that Nagasaki citizens had carried a message for the world that the nuclear weapon must not be used anymore in future.

“Nagasaki must be the last. We cannot allow any future use of nuclear weapons. Their humanitarian consequences are too great,” Ban said.

Millions of fish dead in Pacific Northwest
BY ON ·

I live in the Pacific Northwest and have been hearing about this in the local news. ENENEWS has gathered a collection of news reports that show how widespread and alarming the situation is to the local fish population. — Editor

Ocean conditions have ‘gone to hell’ — Salmon covered in fungus, red lesions all over, big gaping sores — Extinction concerns, “it could be the end” — Experts: It’s crazy… Unprecedented… Catastrophic… Worst they’ve ever seen…

USA Today, Jul 31, 2015 (emphasis added): … weather in the Pacific Northwest is killing millions of fish

AP, Jul 27, 2015: More than a quarter million sockeye salmon returning from the ocean to spawn are either dead or dying in the Columbia… wiping out at least half of this year’s returning population… [NOAA’s Ritchie Graves] says up to 80 percent of the population could ultimately perish.

Eureka Times Standard, Jul 29, 2015: With recent fish counting surveys on two Klamath River tributaries showing alarmingly low numbers… fisheries experts are growing increasingly concerned… The South Fork Trinity River is also showing a low presence of wild Chinook salmon adults… Fisheries experts are not certain why the tributaries have such a low salmon population

Washington Post, Jul 30, 2015: … Native American tribes are becoming increasingly worried [wild salmon] might disappear… the current threat is worse than anything they have seen… “We’re very worried,” said Kathryn Brigham, chair of the Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission… An estimated quarter-million salmon, more than half of the spring spawning run up the Columbia River, perished, likely killed by a disease that thrives in warm water and causes gill rot… Adults stay in the Pacific Ocean from three to seven years… Some populations “could go extinct,” [Greg McMillan with Oregon’s Deschutes River Alliance] said.

KOIN transcript, Jul 27, 2015: Half of the sockeye salmon in the Columbia River are dying… Biologists are calling this die-off unprecedented… (Nick Blevins, fisherman:) “The fish are not looking in good condition… Some of them will have lesions… The sockeye already have gill diseases“… It could be the end for these endangered species. (Blevins:) “For something that’s been here longer than us that’s going to go to extinction, we’re not too far behind then.”

Spokesman Review, Jul 24, 2015: “Never in my entire (29-year) career have I seen anything like this,” [Jeff Korth, fisheries manager] said. “A minimum of 300,000 adult salmon have died… We’re seeing big gaping sores… 15,000 sockeye tried to go up the Okanogan last week… They all diedMy goal was to retire before ocean conditions go to hell again.”

Seattle Times, Jul 27, 2015: … the Columbia [has turned]into a kill zone where salmon immune systems are weakened and fish die of infections… Some [are]suffering from a bacterial disease. Others have backs covered with a mottled white fungus. All are expected to die… Mary Peters, a microbiologist who works for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service [said]“It’s crazy.”… Salmon also face challenges in the ocean… “My guess is that this is going to be one of the poorest years for salmon (ocean) survival” said Bill Peterson, a [NOAA] scientist… “Things do not look good”… Diseased fish with red marks that are signs of a bacterial infection have been found… Some of them actually have red splotches all over

Daily Record, Jul 31, 2015: [Toby Kock, Columbia River Research Laboratory biologist is] seeing a great many fish suffering from columnaris bacterial infections which shows up as frayed or ragged fins, ulcerations and fungus-like white patches on skin and gill filaments.

Spokesman Review, Jul 17, 2015: “Catastrophic“ is a word that’s being used as scientists begin to unravel the mystery… [They’re] finding dead fish, both shad and sockeyethe words scientists use to describe what’s going on are freakier than the photos:

  • WA Dept of Fish & Wildlife: “Very bad news… carnage is ugly… conversion rates… 2-5%”
  • Scientist from B.C., Canada: “Catastrophic losses… have begun to occur… It may be advisable for DFO communications to identify “talking points”… very soon to get out in front of events… [in] more than 40 years and cannot remember anything comparableto what were currently seeing unfold on the coast!

Pakistan child sex abuse: Seven arrested in Punjab

10 August 2015

One official has called it "the largest child abuse scandal in Pakistan's history"

Seven people have been arrested in Pakistan on suspicion of involvement in child sexual abuse and extortion.

The chief minister of Punjab province, Shahbaz Sharif, ordered a judicial inquiry into reports that hundreds of children had been abused over a period of several years.

Local media say a gang made videos showing the abuse of children, whose parents were then subject to blackmail.

The scandal centres on a village near the city of Kasur.

Reports say about 280 children, mostly under 14-years-old, were abused and filmed, in the village of Husain Khan Wala.

Correspondents say many victims are afraid to report abuse, in a society which allows abusers to brag about their exploits but stigmatises their victims.

Police say more arrests are expected.

Grey line

Analysis by the BBC's Ilyas Khan in Islamabad

Child sex abuse is widespread in parts of Pakistan, especially in the countryside.

According to one estimate, over 3,500 cases of child molestation were reported in 2014, of which 67% were reported from rural areas.

Meanwhile, many have noticed that most of the clips being investigated date back to 2009-11, shortly after camera phones first became widely available, with few recent cases being reported.

This has led some to suspect that the clips were reported to the police amid a local dispute.

Grey line

One boy told BBC Urdu the abuse began when he was 11, five years ago:

"They sexually abused me in front of secret cameras... they came back a week later and showed me the video, and said if I did not do what they wanted, they would show it to my friends and school colleagues."

A woman told the BBC her son had been molested and blackmailed for five years, and she had only recently learned about the abuse:

"They used to badly treat him wherever they could get hold of him. They would snatch his mobile and money.

"They [the perpetrators] are now threatening us."

Protesters in Lahore demonstrated against the alleged abuse

District police officer Rai Babar Saeed told BBC Urdu: "We have around 30 video clips of one incident showing six victims and seven people involved. We have arrested these seven. We are still trying to recover more videos."

He added that there was "no political motive" behind the investigations, which he said were being conducted "on merit".

Last week, more than 20 people were injured as families of the alleged victims clashed with police in Kasur, accusing the authorities of ignoring their complaints.

Saba Sadiq, the head of Punjab's child protection bureau, described the case as "the largest child abuse scandal in Pakistan's history", the AFP news agency reports.

The provincial chief in Punjab is the brother of Pakistan's Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

Oklahoma shaken by 40 earthquakes in one week, fracking waste blamed
BY ON ·

(RT) An astounding 40 earthquakes were reported within the period of a week in Oklahoma in late July. State Gov. Mary Fallin acknowledged the link between such earthquake clusters and wastewater disposal procedures used in fracking operations.

In 2013, Oklahoma experienced 109 earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or higher. In 2014, the number skyrocketed to 585 such seismic events, according to state website Earthquakes in Oklahoma. This puts the current rate at some 600 times the historical average.

A particularly intense bout of seismic activity occurred during a seven day period in late July, when 40 earthquakes with a magnitude of at least 2.5 were reported in Oklahoma, according to The Weather Channel.

“We are almost seven months through the year and we’ve almost tied the number of earthquakes we had in 2014. And of course, 2014 was an absolute record-breaking year for the number of earthquakes in Oklahoma,” state seismologist Austin Holland told a local Fox affiliate.

Every that's happened in Oklahoma since the start of this year. 15 4.0 or larger.

Throughout the particularly active week, five earthquakes of magnitude 4.0 or higher were reported on July 27 alone, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The tremors were strong and very shallow, adding to the fear of the residents, some of whom claimed that the July 27 earthquakes were the strongest that they have ever felt.

“We all know now there is a direct correlation between the increase in earthquakes we have seen in Oklahoma and the disposal wells, based upon many different factors, whether it is volume or location or whether it is on a fault line, how deep that disposal well goes into the earth itself,” Oklahoma Governor Fallin said Tuesday.

Governor Fallin acknowledged the link between energy extraction operations and the quakes. The Coordinating Council on Seismic Activity, a panel that Fallin appointed last year, said on Tuesday that despite needing more time, they have made progress towards understanding and reducing earthquakes in the state.

The council was created by Fallin last fall for the purpose of coordinating protection and research efforts throughout Oklahoma. It has focused its efforts on “wastewater disposal wells,” which are used by the oil and natural gas industry in hydraulic fracturing operations, commonly known as fracking.

Energy industry representatives have expressed appreciation towards Fallin’s cautious approach regarding the issue.

“I think we’ve been saying all along – even when there wasn’t a definitive tie in the public consciousness – that as long as the decisions are based on data and good science and not an overreaction, that we’ll be fine,” said Chad Warmington, president of the Oklahoma Oil and Gas Association, according to NewsOK. “We agree with the approach.”

From @USGS, 3.6 earthquake hits Medford, OK. Is this region becoming earthquake alley? http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/states/oklahoma/seismicity.php

Some Oklahoma residents, on the other hand, say that such a light touch could end up costing home and business owners in the face of the earthquake swarm.

“It appears to me we’re protecting the industry in this state and all those jobs. Those jobs are important, but our homes and our wellbeing is every bit as valuable as a job with the oil and gas industry,” said Angela Spotts, co-founder of Stop Fracking Payne County, according to NewsOK. “I sincerely don’t believe the actions have been quick enough or are protecting us from the big one coming.”

Spotts added that the ongoing seismic activity has caused damage not covered by homeowners insurance.

Others like State Rep. Cory Williams have called for a moratorium on wastewater disposal wells in active seismic areas. However, council members said Tuesday that they do not believe a moratorium to be a solution.
