Earth's Degradation Threatens Major Health Gains: Study

AFP

The unprecedented degradation of Earth’s natural resources coupled with climate change could reverse major gains in human health over the last 150 years, according to a sweeping scientific review published late Wednesday.

“We have been mortgaging the health of future generations to realize economic and development gains in the present,” said the report, written by 15 leading academics and published in the peer-reviewed medical journal The Lancet.

“By unsustainably exploiting nature’s resources, human civilization has flourished but now risks substantial health effects from the degradation of nature’s life support systems in the future.”

Climate change, ocean acidification, depleted water sources, polluted land, over-fishing, biodiversity loss — all unintended by-products of humanity’s drive to develop and prosper — “pose serious challenges to the global health gains of the past several decades,” especially in poorer nations, the 60-page report concludes.

The likely impacts on global health of climate change, ranging from expanded disease vectors to malnourishment, have been examined by the UN’s panel of top climate scientists. But the new report, entitled Safeguarding Human Health in the Anthropocene Epoch, takes an even broader view.

The “Anthropocene” is the name given by many scientists to the period –- starting with mass industrialisation -– in which human activity has arguably reshaped Earth’s bio-chemical make-up.

“This is the first time that the global health community has come out in a concerted way to report that we are in real danger of undermining the core ecological systems that support human health,” said Samuel Myers, a scientist at Harvard University and one the authors.

Danger of Bee Decline

A companion study on the worldwide decline of bees and other pollinators, led by Myers and also published in The Lancet, illustrates one way this might happen.

The dramatic decline of bees has already compromised the quantity and quality of many nutrient-rich crops that depend on the transfer of pollen to bear fruit.

Pollinators play a key role in 35 percent of global food production, and are directly responsible for up to 40 percent of the world’s supply of micro-nutrients such a vitamin A and folate, both essential for children and pregnant women.

The complete wipe-out of pollinating creatures, the study concludes, would push a quarter of a billion people in the red-zone of vitamin A or folate deficiency, and cause an increase in heart disease, stroke and some cancers, leading to some 1.4 million additional deaths each year. A 50 percent loss of pollination would result in roughly half that impact, the researchers found.

Scientist are still debating exactly why pollinators are dying off, but there is no disagreement that all the possible causes— pollution, insecticides, land-loss — are related to human activity.

A second companion study examines for the first time the impact of decreased zinc levels in staple crops such as wheat, rice, barley and soy caused by higher levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, the main driver of global warming.

Already, nearly a fifth of the world’s population is at risk of zinc deficiency, which can cause pre-mature delivery, reduce growth and weight-gain in children, and compromise immune functions. By 2050, projected CO2 emissions could place an additional 150 million people at risk, according to the study published in Lancet Global Health.

“Our civilizations may seem strong and resilient, but history tells us that our societies are fragile and vulnerable,” Richard Horton, editor-in-chief of The Lancet and a co-author of the main report, said in a statement.

Introducing the concept of planetary health, the report calls for urgent action, starting with a paradigm shift in the way we understand the relationship between our environment, social or economic progress, and human health.

The report was released by The Rockefeller Foundation-Lancet Commission on Planetary Health.

SOTT Exclusive: Chaos brewing in Ukraine: Right Sector gaining ground

Raising Right Sector's flag in Lvov.
Is it just me, or does official Ukraine look a little more like 1930s-era Germany with every passing day? In case you haven't heard, the neo-Nazi terrorist group Right Sector has been clashing with Ukrainian police over the past several days. You can see some previous coverage of the events here:It's Nazi Germany all over again, with the 'brown shirts' roaming the streets and the politicians (seemingly) powerless to do anything about it. These psychopathic thugs have been fighting on the front lines, killing the civilians of Donbass for months on end. That made them "good guys" in the eyes of Kiev and their American masters. Now, they are turning on their own masters, refusing to disarm and demanding that the war in the east resume, to finish the job of cleansing Donbass. Fellow psychopaths from Tornado, Azov, Aidar and OUN volunteer battalions have joined the cause. Yesterday, coordinated attacks took place against two police precincts in Lvov, Ukraine.

In Mukachevo, about 20 Right Sector goons showed up for a meeting with local deputy Mikhail Lagno, complete with machine-gun-equipped SUVs. The 'talk' quickly turned to violence, and on their way out of the city Right Sector captured a police patrol post. They shot up 3 police vehicles with mortars; 3 people were killed in the fighting, 9 wounded (4 Spetsnaz, 5 civilians). One of their goons described the situation (notes by Kristina Rus of Fort Russ):
"We have been asked to come for a talk three days ago by a criminal kingpin Blyuk [aka Rada deputy Mikhail Lagno - KR], unhappy that our fighters are patrolling the border and blocking contraband. [Read: collecting the contraband 'tax' - KR] There were 12 of us, about 100 titushki [anyone opposing Maidan supporters or the radicals in Ukraine] with weapons were expecting us at the sports base. Bryuk told me, this is his land, and the contraband business is all his."
The day after the clash in Mukachevo, a pair of these thugs kidnapped a 6-year-old boy, using him as a human shield to get past police. They left him tied up, alone in the woods.

Tonight, the car of the regional prosecutor was bombed in nearby Uzhgorod, along with another.

Right Sector is heading towards the border with Poland. Along the way, they have apparently taken control of the city of Lvov, setting up checkpoints throughout the city and replacing the EU flag with their own.

Yats is defending them, justifying their behavior in light of police corruption. 'Demon halo' Timoshenko concurs, accusing them of corruption and smuggling in a statement made on Ukrainian TV, and using the recent clashes to point out the obvious: "there is no strong power in Ukraine". Hear that, Poroshenko? Right Sector is clearly the type of power that makes Timoshenko excited.

These recent events are forcing the Ukrainian rada to get physical (not a difficult thing to do) as they decide whose side they're on: the Nazis or the... erm... Nazis?

And as usual, both sides blame Putin!

Like a boss.

Pope Francis Calls for Global Bankruptcy Process

http://rinf.com/alt-news/latest-news/pope-francis-calls-global-bankruptcy-process/
Thanks to D.

pope-francis-620x330

WASHINGTON – Pope Francis called for an international bankruptcy process in a news conference as he left Latin America on Monday. According to the Associated Press, when asked about the Greek debt crisis, Francis stated, “if a company can declare bankruptcy, why can’t a country do so and we go to the aid of others?” Francis offered further comments noting that too many countries are struggling with high debts and he suggested a United Nations bankruptcy proposal could be the solution.‎

“Pope Francis knows that heavy debt loads cause poverty and inequality,” said Eric LeCompte, who consulted the Vatican on its position. LeCompte is the head of the religious development organization Jubilee USA Network. “The Pope’s statement is a logical extension of the Catholic Church’s strong support of debt relief for struggling countries.”

Last year, LeCompte led a delegation of global Jubilee organizations to advise Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin on the need for a bankruptcy process to address inequality. The Catholic Church is a founder of Jubilee USA and supports its efforts to win debt relief for struggling countries.

In September of 2014, the United Nations General Assembly voted 124-11 to develop the bankruptcy process that Pope Francis referenced. LeCompte addressed the UN earlier this year on the creation of the process. This Fall, the United Nations is set to review progress on the proposal. Because International Monetary Fund (IMF) studies point to debt as a cause of inequality, the IMF is exploring aspects of a bankruptcy process based on an April 2013 paper. In addition to the debt crisis in Greece, nearly 50 countries‎ face worrying levels of debt distress according to World Bank statistics.

“A bankruptcy process is critical if we want less poverty and if we want to prevent financial crisis,” stated LeCompte, who consulted a recent United Nations Conference on Trade and Development road map that fed into the UN bankruptcy process. “Bankruptcy means less inequality and more global stability.”

Gordon Duff VT 7-15-15… “NEO, the story behind the Jade Helm Hoax, Understanding Manufactured Dissent in America”

veterans_today_banner_NEW_137veterans_today_gordon_duff_banner_49I believe this was supposed to be the day Jade Helm was to take over America, or something like that. I’ve paid essentially no attention to it since the VT boys (mainly Gordon Duff and Jim Dean) had pretty much shown it to be a “non-thing”.

Anyway, I just saw this at VT and felt it might be useful information for some. The only part I steer away from is the implication that Jim Fetzer is “off the deep end” for writing about the possible actuality of Jade Helm. We can all get “fooled” once or twice in our lifetimes.

“The Jade Helm hoax, based on months of investigation, was funded by the Bronfman crime family and planned by Stratfor and DEBKA, two “corporate intelligence” groups our investigators say may be tied to Wikileaks, InfoWars and the intelligence services of Israel.

“There is nothing totalitarian about Democrats, in fact there is nothing even “organized” about the Democrats. They fight among each other so much, no two have ever agreed on anything.

“There was no real national police force until George W. Bush formed the Department of Homeland Security. There was only the FBI that operates under the Department of Justice and is tightly controlled and trusted by no one.

“America is a nation built on mistrust of government, which is a two edged sword. This cynicism and distrust has become fodder for psychological warfare experts who manipulate fear and envy along with race prejudice in order to build “electoral blocks” to maintain control of what has become a sadly corrupt economic system. It is all about money.”

NEO, the story behind the Jade Helm Hoax, Understanding Manufactured Dissent in America

Editor’s note: Today is the day martial law was supposed to sweep America. Instead nothing happened. The backpedaling started weeks ago. Remember the ISIS camp across the Rio Grande with 40,000 terrorists or Alex Jones’ Russian army marching up the Mississippi? Do we want to go really nuts, “full Fetzer?”

Those who reported trainloads of “shackles” or hidden prisons in the imaginary tunnels under Walmarts, or more insane still, Dahboo’s infamous video telling of the newly built 124-year-old whiskey aging warehouses in “the backwoods of Kentucky,” all expressed with pathetic bad grammar, perhaps worse than the lies themselves.

The Jade Helm hoax, based on months of investigation, was funded by the Bronfman crime family and planned by Stratfor and DEBKA, two “corporate intelligence” groups our investigators say may be tied to Wikileaks, InfoWars and the intelligence services of Israel.

Today is the day it all burned down. Now read about who these people really are and why they are the real enemy, police informants, paid propagandists and dangerous idiots…Gordon Duff

First published July 14, 2015

american-flagIt was announced to the world that, during first quarter of 2015, the American economy “tanked.” Those who reported it, even those who jockeyed the economic indicators to manufacture a hideously wrong picture, knew it as well.

Last week, stories hit the news, quietly of course, that the economic situation has been wrongly assessed. Nobody said why, they simply said it was all a misunderstanding.

You see, retail sales figure in the US crashed because the cost of fuel went down, causing a lowering of actual transactions but, with that, a strengthening of the dollar. This in turn cut exports, as a high US dollar compared to the mythological Euro and the British Pound, makes American goods expensive.

What did happen in the US is a rise in savings, a lowering of levels of consumer borrowing, a rise in wages and a huge cut in deficits.

Am I saying the US is perfect? You will find the same pundits who report what are now invented failures of President Obama also blamed President Clinton for implementing the North American Free Trade Agreement signed by President Bush. Almost all of these same pundits claim it was Clinton who signed the agreement as well, since nobody checks on things like that.

Back row, left to right: Mexican President Carlos Salinas de Gortari, U.S. President George H. W. Bush, and Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, at the initialing of the draft North American Free Trade Agreement in October 1992Let’s take a look at another issue, equally misreported, equally spurious. The same pundits who love inventing economic indicators also continually blither about martial law and gun seizure in the US.

When writing to American audiences they go further with many having a long and for some now hidden history of fomenting race hatred or “no visible means of support,” meaning they only write what they are paid to write by those mysterious unseen handlers that send out “talking points.”

If you hadn’t noticed, if you see the same points in articles by activists and pundits, this “spam content” which fills the comment boards, blogs and even journals originates from Washington based think tanks with huge black budgets to pay off “investigative journalists.”

The mainstream news gets the same talking points, mind you, but they have to pay taxes on their payoff money, it comes as a weekly paycheck rather than as mysterious book purchases or PayPal donations.

So, let’s talk about martial law. For those who really know American politics, the idea of a Democratic president being authoritarian is funny.

There is nothing totalitarian about Democrats, in fact there is nothing even “organized” about the Democrats. They fight among each other so much, no two have ever agreed on anything.

DNC Convention crowd

You see, the funny thing is the Democratic Party tends to stand for reform, civil rights, due process, free elections, environmental protections, quality education, health care and limitations on the privilege and power of those who have looted America.

Then again, those who have looted America finance the think tanks that send out the talking points to the pundits, who invariably support the positions of big oil and the financial and war cabals that they give lip service to criticizing.

As to the mechanisms of control in the US, few remotely understand any of it, including and especially those who love reading the fear porn blogs. America is highly decentralized as to political control.

America is a loose confederation of states with very limited involvement by the federal government in the affairs of states.

There was no real national police force until George W. Bush formed the Department of Homeland Security. There was only the FBI that operates under the Department of Justice and is tightly controlled and trusted by no one.

FEMA federal police badge

When the FBI goes to a state, they are watched, local courts limit what they do and, too often when they go after really bad people, and they often do exactly that, they are hampered by corrupt local officials.

Under Bush, all that changed with a massive federal bureaucracy taking disaster and environmental groups and melding them with the military, thus the lunatic fringe talking about FEMA camps, which do not exist.

However, they could exist, but if they did, they would have been put there by Bush, not Obama and would exist with the full backing of those same right wing totalitarian think tanks that fund the blogosphere, talk radio and the mainstream media.

Yes, a very fearful mechanism was put in place by Bush, one that Obama has never used but has failed to dismember as well. Is that failure because the presidency in the US lacks this kind of power?

Is it because it was necessary for extremists, the same extremists who fund the blogosphere, to plan and execute 9/11 as a “New Pearl Harbor” in order to push through legislation to form this fearful capability?

You know, when you look at the history of many writers, activists, pundits and self-proclaimed experts, you find their history of opposing evil is a rather checkered one. Most were either silent or “controlled opposition” during the entire Bush administration.

UN Human Rights Report on Palestine

Here is a very simple litmus. The United Nations published a human rights report on Palestine almost two weeks ago. Some of the language was watered down, but the report clearly named Israel as guilty of war crimes.

In fact, the report, as seen in the preamble, was predicated on the fact that the occupation of Palestine is done in violation of the Geneva Convention.

Yet, there is almost nothing said of this report, few read it, Julian Assange failed to take note, others as well said nothing and there is a reason for this. Those who missed this didn’t do so by accident. They were told to miss it, it was in their “talking points.” Otherwise, how could any rights activist miss something of such global import?

American Elections

supreme-court-justices-998x586

Let’s return to the US and why there will not be martial law under Obama, why the idea is so insane. There are three branches of the federal government. One, the Supreme Court, is the most controversial with several judges being clearly controlled by organized crime. Two are probably insane.

This court can stop any government move, nullify any law and is and has been for years out of control. It was 5 members of the Supreme Court that stopped the 2000 election and put Bush in office. This same court has been doing little but building a police state which, thankfully, the executive branch under Obama has chosen to not use.

This is why, in truth, millions of Americans desperately fear a Republican president because they really do fear martial law and only a Republican would have the backing of the court and the legislature to enact it.

For those who are unaware, the majority in the two houses of the congress are now controlled by gambling boss Sheldon Adelson, an Israeli citizen who hates the United States, perhaps for reasons not entirely unreasonable.

Thus, a Democrat could never “crack down” on anyone, but a Republican not only would but it is within their tradition to do so, and it was the Republicans who are responsible for 9/11 and its aftermath, a carefully planned effort to turn the US into a police state and war against the world on behalf of some very nasty and powerful people.

Is this a conspiracy theory?

Gun Seizure

The next issue is gun seizure. Individual states pass laws related to guns though the federal government has powers as well. It is individual states that have passed crazy laws that make some guns illegal because of a brand name and yet allow other guns of devastating combat power to remain legal.

What is most important is that the gun lobby in the US has tremendous power in the congress and that gun laws are impossible to pass. Gun ownership crossed all political lines in the US and there are very few who want gun control.

However, the Democratic Party is guilty of pandering to certain “urban elites” who advocate gun control. Their position is a rational one, people probably shouldn’t be able to own better weapons than the military but it is too late to do anything about it.

You see, America is a nation built on mistrust of government, which is a two edged sword. This cynicism and distrust has become fodder for psychological warfare experts who manipulate fear and envy along with race prejudice in order to build “electoral blocks” to maintain control of what has become a sadly corrupt economic system.

It is all about money.

  • Fracking linked to high hospitalization rates in people living near drilling sites

    © Unknown
Hospitalizations for heart conditions, neurological illness, and other conditions were higher among people who live near unconventional gas and oil drilling (hydraulic fracturing), according to new research from the University of Pennsylvania and Columbia University published this week in PLOS ONE. Over the past ten years in the United States, hydraulic fracturing has experienced a meteoric increase. Due to substantial increases in well drilling, potential for air and water pollution posing a health threat has been a concern for nearby residents.

To address this issue, researchers from two Environmental Health Science Core Centers (EHSCC) of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences -- the Center of Excellence in Environmental Toxicology (CEET) at Penn's Perelman School of Medicine and the Center for Environmental Health in Northern Manhattan at the Mailman School of Public Health, Columbia University, examined the link between drilling well density and healthcare use by zip code from 2007 to 2011 in three northeastern Pennsylvania counties.

Using databases that contained over 198,000 hospitalizations (which includes multiple hospitalizations for the same person), the team examined the top 25 specific medical categories for hospitalizations, as defined by the Pennsylvania Health Cost Containment Council. They associated these categories with residents' proximity to active wells. Two of the counties -- Bradford and Susquehanna -- saw a significant increase in drilling activity over this time period, while the control county, Wayne, experienced no drilling activity due to a ban on drilling in that county because of its proximity to the Delaware River watershed.

"This study captured the collective response of residents to hydraulic fracturing in zip codes within the counties with higher well densities," said senior author Reynold Panettieri, Jr., MD, a professor of Medicine and CEET deputy director. "At this point, we suspect that residents are exposed to many toxicants, noise, and social stressors due to hydraulic fracturing near their homes and this may add to the increased number of hospitalizations. This study represents one of the most comprehensive to date to link health effects with hydraulic fracturing."

However, the authors caution that more study is needed to determine how specific, individual toxicants or combinations may increase hospitalization rates. For example, the increase in cardiology hospitalizations could be related to an increased exposure to air pollution such as diesel exhaust and fine particulate matter; however, this would require personal monitoring studies to measure exposure to specific toxicants, Panettieri notes. "Our findings provide important clues to design epidemiological studies to associate specific toxicant exposures with health end-points."

Their findings revealed that cardiology and neurologic inpatient prevalence rates (the proportion of a population found to have been hospitalized per 100 residents per year) were significantly higher in areas closer to active wells, as determined by the proximity of wells to a person's home and their density as defined by the number of active wells per square kilometer. In addition, increased neurologic inpatient prevalence rates were associated with higher well density. Hospitalizations for skin conditions, cancer, and urologic problems were also associated with the proximity of dwellings to active wells.

The team found that 18 zip codes had a well density greater than 0.79 wells per square kilometer, and residents living in these zip codes were predicted to have a 27 percent increase in cardiology inpatient prevalence rates for each year this specific active well density existed compared to Wayne County residents where there is no drilling. The researchers aim to look at specific types of health problems within these broad categories in the future.

While the study does not prove that hydraulic fracturing actually causes these health problems, the authors say, the hospitalization increases observed over the relatively short time span of observation suggests that healthcare costs of hydraulic fracturing must be factored into the economic benefits of unconventional gas and oil drilling.

This study was supported by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (P30-ES013508, P30-ES009089). The EHSCCs belong to an inter-Center Working Group on Hydraulic Fracturing, which is a consortium of the nation's EHSCCs, chaired by co-author Trevor Penning, PhD, CEET director.
