18 million U.S. households struggling to feed families

Almost 18 million American homes struggled to find enough to eat in 2011, including 3.9 million homes with children, or 10 percent of all families with children, according to numbers released Wednesday by the U.S. Department of Agriculture

Even worse off were single moms and black and Latino households, the survey found.

As NPR notes, "People went hungry."

The survey tracked families who had some issues with finding enough food, dubbed "food insecure," and those deemed "very very food insecure," who lacked basic nutrition at some point during the year. The latter category includes some 6.8 million households nationwide where adults skipped meals, couldn't afford balanced meals, and worried about having enough money to buy food several months out of the year.

In all, the "food insecure" represented 5.7 percent of American households. It's not much of a change compared to 2010, but it's 2 percent more — thousands of people more — since 1998.

The survey results come just a day after the same agency announced that food stamps — known officially as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program -- reached an all-time high in the U.S. in June, with more than 46 million Americans using help to buy food. Food stamps also reached an all-time high annual cost of $75.7 billion for the fiscal year ending in Sept. 2011, according to Bloomberg News. Almost half of those on food stamps are children.

Meanwhile food stamps and other assistance programs have taken center-stage in the national political debate leading up to the presidential election.

A spokesperson for Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney told Bloomberg that the increase in food stamps is a sign that the country is not better off than it was four years ago. And during primary season, then-GOP candidate Newt Gingrich lashed out at Barack Obama as the "food stamp President."

"It's one more example of government incompetence," Alabama Republican Sen. Jeff Sessions told Bloomberg.

At the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., this week, Rep. Barney Frank told The Daily Caller that there would be fewer people on food stamps if the Republicans cooperated more with stimulus spending, and the Rev. Jesse Jackson said that food stamps help farmers and grocery businesses.

"It's why I wish we got more cooperation from the Republicans in trying to do the things that would help us economically like not have the cities have to layoff firefighters and cops," Rep. Frank, D-Mass., said.

"Providing a safety net for the needy is morally correct and when the economy gets better, those numbers will go down," Jackson said.

Amazingly long earthworm discovered in China

In Binchaun County, China, a snake-like earthworm measuring over 19 inches (a half-meter) long was found in a house gutter. Li Zhiwei, a Forestry Bureau worker, made the discovery and eventually decided to keep the worm and raise it in his backyard. An adult earthworm's measurements vary by species and can range anywhere from 10mm long and 1mm wide, to 3-meters long and over 25mm wide. Environmental factors also influence an earthworm's body size, and they tend to grow longer and larger during humid seasons if they take in sufficient nutrition and have no natural enemies. Biologists plan to study the earthworm found by Li to classify it and identify the reason it was able to grow to its current length.

10_1_136.gifHi Luis,

I just wanted to stop by and catch up on some of your facsinating news articles. I also wanted to briefly talk about a subject that is not mentioned that often. Aside from the fact that the whole world is in a financial crisis people seem to forget that when a leader of a country, (Any Country) tries to balance a budget that leader is concentrating on known facts. However, there have been Wild Fires in the U.S., due to the devastating weather, Earthquakes in several countries, and several other unforseen disasters brought on by nature. Not once did our present say that we could not afford to help. The United States of America has always been, and always will be the First Respondents to help those in need. When Hurricane Issac hit, volunteers fron Indiana were packing trucks of donated food and medication to take to the affected areas. In every state in our country there are hundreds of Food pantries in several cities that are run by volunteer workers. There are a lot of 'Behind-The-Scene' citizen's that give their time to help there neighbors. Our crops took a bad hit this year and food prices are expected to rise dramatically. However, at a grocery store nearby that is known for higher than average prices I noticed something earlier this week. A girl was dumping out a new supply of Corn. The sign read "10 for $2.00" We have had Corn on the Cob for our supper meal every night. Basically I bring this up because while so many people are saying everything that is wrong with America, I wish that they would realize how much is right with America. Shirley and I are not rich. We never have been and never will be. However, I have no problems with how our president is running our country because given the tremendous challenges he has been given right from the start, I believe that we are doing alright. This is just my opinion and is not up for debate. Therefore, if anyone should want to challenge my lifestyle, it is my decision on how to handle situations that come my way, and I have no problem with that. I have confidence that once we make it through the next two or three months, we will see some big changes coming our way, and things will be much better for all of us.

GOD BLESS YOU

~Mike~

Hi Mike,

It certainly is a great thing that even in the middle of the current severe financial crisis, the U.S. people, from the president down to the last citizen, are keeping their willingness to help those in need. Another great thing is to me the fact that while the frequent earthquakes that have been hitting several countries have been extremely severe, they would seem to be curiously merciful with regard to human lives. Who knows, maybe God is responding to the peoples' compassion to their neighbour by showing in turn his mercy toward the human genre. And like in these two cases, there are other signs that point to the fact that things are little by little improving in the world. In your own words, I too believe that "once we make it through the next two or three months, we will see some big changes coming our way, and things will be much better for all of us."

Hugs and blessings,

Miguel
