Death toll soars as cold snap hits UK

Wed Feb 4, 2015 6:10PM

Winter deaths are soaring across the UK .

Official figures reveal that the death rate related to cold snaps in England and Wales is over 30% higher than normal for this time of year.

According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS) some 28,800 people died in the fortnight ending January 23.

ONS said the flu virus and the cold snap are the main reasons behind the recent spike in winter deaths.

Elderly victims

More than 25,000 people aged over 65 lost their lives due to the cold snap. 11,102 men and 14,129 women lost their lives in the fortnight to 23 January. The death toll among the elderly was 18,154 in the same period last year.

Flu factor

Medical experts blame the flu- the H3N2 sub-type in particular - for most of the winter deaths.

“The main type of flu that has been circulating this winter so far (influenza A/H3N2) is well recognized to particularly impact groups, such as the elderly and those with underlying chronic health problems, resulting in increases in hospitalizations and deaths. That is why we recommend these groups receive flu vaccine each year, ideally before the flu season starts,” the Guardian quoted Dr Richard Pebody, PHE’s head of seasonal flu surveillance, as saying.

Fuel poverty scandal

Meanwhile, the Daily Telegraph reported that the winter death tall is expected to exceed 40,000, the highest figure for the past 15 years.

Fuel poverty, particularly among the pensioners, is believed to be a contributing factor. Nearly one million senior citizens are estimated to be living in fuel poverty across the UK.

Campaigners believe that many of the deaths can be prevented if the government improves the energy efficiency of homes across the country.

ISIS executes three of its Chinese militants: China paper

Reuters, Beijing
Thursday, 5 February 2015

The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) group has killed three Chinese militants who joined its ranks and later attempted to flee, a Chinese state-run newspaper said, the latest account of fighters from China embroiled in the Middle East conflict.

China has expressed concern about the rise of ISIS, nervous about the effect it could have on its Xinjiang region, which borders Pakistan and Afghanistan.

But Beijing has also shown no sign of wanting to take part in the U.S.-led coalition’s efforts to use military force against the militant group.

Around 300 Chinese extremists were fighting with ISIS after travelling to Turkey, the Global Times, a tabloid run by China’s ruling Communist Party’s official newspaper, said in December.

The paper on Thursday cited an unnamed Kurdish security official as saying that a Chinese man was “arrested, tried and shot dead” in Syria in late September by ISIS after he became disillusioned with jihad and attempted to return to Turkey to attend university.

“Another two Chinese militants were beheaded in late December in Iraq, along with 11 others from six countries. ISIS charged them with treason and accused them of trying to escape,” the official said, according to the paper.

ISIS, which has seized parts of northern and eastern Syria as well as northern and western Iraq, has killed hundreds off the battlefield since the end of June, when it declared a caliphate.

Chinese officials blame separatists from the East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM) for carrying out attacks in Xinjiang, home to the Muslim Uighur people. But they are vague about how many people from China are fighting in the Middle East.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei did not comment on the report at a regular press briefing, but said China was opposed to "all forms of terrorism".

“China is willing to work with the international community to combat terrorist forces, including ETIM, and safeguard global peace, security and stability,” Hong said.

Human rights advocates say economic marginalization of Uighurs and curbs on their culture and religion are the main causes of ethnic violence in Xinjiang and around China that has killed hundreds of people in recent years. China denies these assertions.

China has criticized the Turkish government for offering shelter to Uighur refugees who have fled through southeast Asia, saying it creates a global security risk.

A Turning of the Tide? PressTV 2-4-15… “US Democrats threaten NOT to attend Netanyahu’s Congress speech”

presstv_logo_2Something is playing out here. Certainly many of these Congress people are hearing from their constituents (or at least their own inner conscience) about Mr. Netanyahu appearing in Congress on March 3. We shall see how many attendees are there.

“POLITICO reported on Tuesday that lawmakers and aides said House Democrats are “privately threatening to skip” the address on March 3.

“The White House announced that Obama would not meet with Netanyahu in Washington next month… A State Department official stated US Secretary of State John Kerry also would not meet with the Israeli leader, POLITICO reported… US Vice President Joe Biden might also skip the speech

“Many Democrats, including several Jewish members, are considering leaving some seats empty when Netanyahu is addressing Congress.”

US Democrats threaten not to attend Netanyahu’s Congress speech

Dozens of American lawmakers have threatened not to attend Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Iran speech at Congress to protest his visit to Washington next month.

POLITICO reported on Tuesday that lawmakers and aides said House Democrats are “privately threatening to skip” the address on March 3.

Last month, House Speaker John Boehner invited Netanyahu to speak about imposing further sanctions against Iran at a joint session of Congress while Tehran and world powers are negotiating to reach a final nuclear agreement.

The invitation came despite President Barack Obama’s threats to veto new Iran sanctions legislation.

Netanyahu, who is against a comprehensive Iran nuclear accord, has been repeatedly trying to persuade congressmen to vote in favor of additional sanctions against Tehran.

The White House announced that Obama would not meet with Netanyahu in Washington next month.

A State Department official stated US Secretary of State John Kerry also would not meet with the Israeli leader, POLITICO reported.

US Vice President Joe Biden might also skip the speech and his office has not commented about his attention. Biden, who is the president of the Senate, should sit beside Boehner behind the podium for addresses by foreign leaders.

Many Democrats, including several Jewish members, are considering leaving some seats empty when Netanyahu is addressing Congress.

Rep. Steve Cohen said he has discussed with his colleagues not to attend the session.

“I just don’t know if it’s the proper response or not,” Cohen said. “But I just think it’s a mistake and it might be a proper protest. But I haven’t made that definite decision.”

“With his [Netanyahu’s] election being so soon, and with the negotiations we have going on with Iran, he’s put himself in a political situation here that’s probably adverse to the best interest of Israel,” he added.

Rep. John Yarmuth noted that he has not decided yet about attending the session.

“It wouldn’t be an official boycott. I wouldn’t announce that I wasn’t going. But I don’t really blame Netanyahu — although I’m not a fan of Netanyahu — but I don’t blame him for coming,” he said.

However, Boehner’s office reiterated that the speech would take place next month and Netanyahu can attend the annual policy conference of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), which is the powerful pro-Israel lobby.

Meanwhile, AIPAC supported the speech and encouraged all members of Congress to “attend this important speech.”

TASS 2-3-15… “Crowd of several hundred tries to storm Ukrainian presidential administration office”, and “Protesters in Kiev hand over ‘call-up notice’ to President Poroshenko”

ukraine_soldiers_in_kiev_240Well, something (positive?) is going on in the Ukraine. I know Lada Ray also posted this article about it, “Breaking! Maidan 2 Storms Poroshenko’s Administration in Kiev“. She wrote,

“Details are scant, but a few days ago various ukro-nazi battalions gathered in Kiev demanding a bigger and better war against Donbass, with more war expenditure, bigger help from the US and NATO, and more ballistic missile bombings of the citizens of Donetsk (DNR) and Lugansk (LNR). Today, it appears the members of the same ukro-nazi battalions and their sympathisers are storming the administration of the Ukraine president Poroshenko, who according to them, has been too mild towards Donbass and too friendly to Russia. Most others would say it were the other way around, but that’s their point of view.”

Earlier, demonstrators demanded the introduction of martial law and resignation of all top law enforcement officials, including the defense minister and prosecutor-general

KIEV, February 3. /TASS/. A crowd of several hundred people has begun storming the Ukrainian presidential administration’s office, a TASS correspondent reports from the scene.

Protest demonstrators have penetrated the first cordon of the National Guards and are trying to make their way to the conference hall. Police forces are being moved in. National guards in full riot gear entered a brawl with the demonstrators, who are demanding access to TV cameras for a statement.

Earlier, demonstrators demanded the introduction of martial law and resignation of all top law enforcement officials, including the defense minister and prosecutor-general.

Also, one of their demands is the removal of the 25th Kievan Rus battalion of the Ukrainian armed forces from the area of Debaltsevo. Women from the Mothers’ Union have told TASS their sons could not have been contacted for the past several days.

Protesters in Kiev hand over ‘call-up notice’ to President Poroshenko

“We demand you immediately show up at the military enlistment office at the place of domicile,” a poster featuring a call-up paper reads, TASS correspondent reports from the scene

KIEV, February 3. /TASS/. Protesters who gathered in front of the Ukrainian president’s administration building have handed over a symbolic “call-up notice” to Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, a TASS correspondent reports from the scene.

“We demand you immediately show up at the military enlistment office at the place of domicile,” reads a poster featuring a call-up paper.

Earlier, a representative of the presidential administration called on demonstrators to go away. “The president is not in Kiev, he is currently in Kharkiv. Please go home, or proceed to the reception office,” he said. But the crowd demands access to the conference hall and access to live TV cameras.

Some of the protesters are calling to take the presidential administration official who appeared before the crowd hostage until the president arrives in Kiev.

The protesters are trying to get into the building but so far the police and National Guard officers are managing to keep the crowd away from the building.

Earlier, the attackers managed to get through the first line of the national guards and tried to make their way to the conference hall. Police forces were brought in. National guards in full riot gear entered into a fight with the intruders.

The action started on Tuesday morning at the building of Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada (parliament). Some of the protesters were let inside the building, where they spoke at the press lounge. After that, the demonstrators decided to head to the building of the presidential administration to lay their demands to the president.

The demonstrators are demanding the introduction of martial law and resignation of all key law enforcement figures, including the defense minister and prosecutor-general. Also, they are pressing for the withdrawal of the 25th battalion Kievan Rus of the Ukrainian Armed Forces from the area of Debaltsevo. Members of the Mothers’ Union have told TASS their sons could not be contacted for the past few days.

Jordan jets 'strike Islamic State' after pilot's death

King Abdullah (right) paid a visit to Safi al-Kasasbeh, the father of the murdered pilot, in the tribe's village

Jordan says its warplanes have carried out their first air strikes on Islamic State (IS) targets since the militants released a video showing the killing of a captured Jordanian pilot.

On their way back, the planes flew over the village of pilot Moaz al-Kasasbeh.

Their flight coincided with a visit to the village by Jordanian King Abdullah II, who was meeting the pilot's family.

The king has vowed to the step up the fight against IS. Jordan is part of a US-led coalition bombing the militants.

Lt Kasasbeh was captured by the militants last year after his F-16 fighter jet crashed in Syria. IS this week released a video showing the pilot being burned alive in a cage, sparking calls for revenge in Jordan.

State television pictures on Thursday showed the king sitting sombre-faced with Saif al-Kasasbeh, the pilot's father, at a gathering in Aya village, near the city of Karak, south of the capital Amman.

The king gestured to the skies as the warplanes flew overhead, media reports said.

Mr Kasasbeh told mourners that the aircraft were returning from a raid on Syria's Raqqa, the de facto capital of the militants' self-declared caliphate, which spans territory in Iraq and Syria.

The army did not specify the location of the air strikes, but said in a statement that "dozens of jet fighters" had struck IS targets, including training camps and weapons warehouses.

The air strikes were "just the beginning", the statement added.

State television showed people writing messages on what appeared to be missiles for the air strikes, with one calling IS "the enemies of Islam".

A security official quoted by Reuters news agency said the air strikes had targeted IS in Syria.

Also on Thursday, Jordan released an imprisoned jihadi cleric, Abu Mohammad al-Maqdisi, whose writings had inspired members of al-Qaeda in Iraq.

Maqdisi, who has previously condemned IS as a "deviant organisation", was detained in late 2014 for promoting jihadist views online.

The reason for his release was unclear, but security sources told Reuters that Maqdisi was expected to condemn the burning of the pilot.

On Wednesday, Jordan responded to the killing of the pilot by executing two convicts, including Sajida al-Rishawi, a failed female suicide bomber.

Last week, IS had demanded the release of Rishawi in return for sparing the pilot's life. However, it is now believed that IS had in fact killed the pilot a month ago.

Meanwhile, the US military said that the US-led coalition had conducted a total of nine air strikes on IS-targets in Iraq, and three on targets in Syria, between Wednesday and Thursday morning.

Those strikes hit IS units near the Syrian town of Kobane, and in seven Iraqi cities including Fallujah, Kirkuk and Mosul, the Combined Joint Task Force said in a statement.

'No humanity'

On Thursday, Mr Kasasbeh praised the king and condemned the militants.

"You are a wise monarch," Reuters quotes him as saying. "These criminals violated the rules of war in Islam and they have no humanity."

Jordan is one of four Arab states to have taken part in the anti-IS air strikes in Syria. The other countries are Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar.

US officials told the BBC on Wednesday that the UAE had suspended its involvement in the strikes after Lt Kasasbeh was captured in December.

The New York Times quoted officials as saying the UAE wanted the Pentagon to improve its search-and-rescue efforts in Iraq before it resumed bombing missions.
