Islamic State militants kill 40 Iraqi troops

Islamic State Militants Kill 40 Iraqi Troops

BAGHDAD (AP) — A wave of suicide bombings by Islamic State militants in western Iraq has killed 40 soldiers amid waning efforts by security forces to retake territory from the Sunni extremist group, a senior Iraqi commander said Monday.

The attacks, which occurred on Sunday in the town of Sijir, 70 kilometers (43 miles) west of Baghdad, dealt a heavy blow to government efforts to rein in the militants whose rampage has seized much of the country's north and west this summer — even as Iraqi Kurdish peshmerga fighters are starting to get training by Iraq's Western allies in the battle against the Islamic State group.

In addition to the 40 troops killed in the suicide bombings, 68 Iraqi soldiers were apparently captured by the Islamic State group in Sijir and have likely been taken to the nearby city of Fallujah, said Gen. Rasheed Fleih. There has been no communication with any of the soldiers since their capture Sunday, Fleih said.

On Sunday, the militants launched a massive wave of attacks on Iraqi troops in Sijir, involving several suicide bombings and sparking clashes, said a security official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media. After the attacks, the Iraqi military withdrew 700 more troops stationed in the area, he added.

Following their battlefield successes in both Iraq and neighboring Syria, fighters with the Islamic State group, among them many Iraqi nationals, re-entered Iraq through the country's western Anbar province, engaging in fierce battles with the Iraqi military. In this Sunni-majority territory, the group quickly capitalized on long-standing grievances against the Shiite-led government in Baghdad, earning support from local populations.

Iraqi and Kurdish security forces, backed by U.S. airstrikes, were able to retake the strategic Mosul Dam and several small towns since airstrikes began. However, serious challenges remain, since many of the Islamic State fighters have taken refuge in busy cities with high civilian populations, such as Fallujah and Mosul.

In northern Iraq, Kurdish fighters battling the Sunni militant group have begun receiving training from Western allies, including the United States, as they seek to beef up their capabilities, a top Kurdish security official said Monday.

Helgurd Hikmet, general director of the ministry overseeing Kurdish military forces known as peshmerga, said that France, Italy and Germany are also among countries providing training to help Kurdish forces use new machine guns, mortars, rockets and demining robots they have received.

"We asked all our allies, when they provided us with new weapons, that these weapons need training," Hikmet told The Associated Press. "So now all the allies that provided us with those weapons are providing us with training."

The U.S. launched airstrikes and humanitarian missions in August to aid Iraqi and Kurdish security forces in northern Iraq.

Last week, the French joined in the aerial campaign. A number of European countries have also committed to arming the Kurds and providing humanitarian support for more than a million people displaced by the onslaught of the Islamic State group.

U.S. forces working with the peshmerga are part of the advise-and-assist teams that have been in Irbil, the provincial capital of the semi-autonomous Iraqi Kurdish region, for several weeks. The U.S. has also provided equipment against roadside bombs and other sophisticated artillery to the Kurdish fighters.

After seizing Iraq's second-largest city, Mosul, in June, militants with the Islamic State group waged an aggressive offensive across northern Iraq, forcing hundreds of thousands from their homes and coming dangerously close to heavily populated cities in Iraq's Kurdish region.

On Monday evening, a car bomb went off in the commercial district of Ur in eastern Baghdad, killing 12 people and wounding at least 28 others, police and hospital officials said.

The attack brought the day's death toll in and around Baghdad to 26. A bombing and a shooting earlier in the day killed seven while a midday bomb in a commercial street in Baghdad's southwestern district of Bayaa killed four people and wounded 13, according to police officials. All the officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information.

Also, just north of Baghdad, gunmen broke into the house of an anti-militant Sunni fighter, killing his two sons and a daughter, the police said. The Sunni fighter was wounded along with his wife. He was a member of Sahwa, a Sunni militia that joined U.S. troops in the fight against Iraq's al-Qaida branch at the height of Iraq's insurgency in 2007 and 2008.

Pentagon: US, partners begin airstrikes in Syria

U.S. Airstrikes Begin Over Syria

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. and five Arab countries launched airstrikes Monday night on Islamic State group targets in eastern Syria, and the U.S. undertook a separate, unilateral air attack on what it called an al-Qaida affiliate elsewhere in Syria.

Several hours after the Pentagon announced the airstrikes against Islamic State targets, U.S. Central Command said American warplanes launched eight airstrikes "to disrupt the imminent attack plotting against the United States and Western interests" by a network of "seasoned al-Qaida veterans" — sometimes known as the Khorasan Group — who have established a haven in Syria. It provided no details on the plotting.

Central Command said that separate bombing mission was undertaken solely by U.S. aircraft and took place west of the Syrian city of Aleppo. It said targets included training camps, an explosives and munitions production facility, a communication building and command and control facilities.

The airstrikes against Islamic State targets were carried out in the city of Raqqa and other areas in eastern Syria by a mix of manned aircraft — fighter jets and bombers — plus Tomahawk cruise missiles and drone aircraft. The strikes were part of the expanded military campaign that President Barack Obama authorized nearly two weeks ago in order to disrupt and destroy the Islamic State militants, who have slaughtered thousands of people, beheaded Westerners — including two American journalists — and captured large swaths of Syria and northern and western Iraq.

In its written statement detailing the operation, Central Command said the airstrikes, which officials said began around 8:30 p.m. EDT, were conducted by the U.S., Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates. It said the five Arab partner countries "participated in or supported" the airstrikes against Islamic State targets. It was not more specific.

Central Command said the U.S. fired 47 Tomahawk cruise missiles from aboard the USS Arleigh Burke and USS Philippine Sea, operating from international waters in the Red Sea and the northern Persian Gulf. U.S. Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps fighter jets, drones and bombers also participated.

The first wave of strikes finished about 90 minutes later, but the operation was expected to continue for several more hours, according to one U.S. official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly by name about an ongoing mission.

Syria's Foreign Ministry said the U.S. informed Syria's envoy to the U.N. that "strikes will be launched against the terrorist Daesh group in Raqqa." The statement used an Arabic name to refer to the Islamic State group.

At a conference on Sept. 11 with Secretary of State John Kerry, key Arab allies promised they would "do their share" to fight the Islamic State militants. The Obama administration, which at a NATO meeting in Wales earlier this month also got commitments from European allies as well as Canada and Australia, has insisted that the fight against the Islamic State militants could not be the United States' fight alone.

Activists said the airstrikes hit targets in and around the Syrian city of Raqqa and the province with the same name. Raqqa is the Islamic State group's self-declared capital in Syria.

Rami Abdurrahman, who heads the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, told The Associated Press, "There is confirmed information that there are casualties among Islamic State group members."

He added that missiles also targeted the towns of Tabqa, Ein Issa and Tel Abyad, as well as the village of Kfar Derian, which is a base for the al-Qaida-linked Nusra Front, a rival of the Islamic State group.

Another activist, Mohammed al-Dughaim, based in the northern Syrian province of Idlib, confirmed that several airstrikes hit Kfar Derian in the early hours of Tuesday. He said there were civilians among the casualties.

An amateur video posted online Tuesday shows explosions going off at night in an open area, blasts that are said to be from coalition airstrikes. The narrator in the video is heard saying that the footage shows the "bombardment of the Kfar Derian village."

The head of the main Western-backed Syrian opposition group, Hadi Bahra, welcomed the commencement of airstrikes in Syria.

"Tonight, the international community has joined our fight against ISIS in Syria," he said in a statement, using an alternate acronym for the Islamic State. "We have called for airstrikes such as those that commenced tonight with a heavy heart and deep concern, as these strikes begin in our own homeland. We insist that utmost care is taken to avoid civilian casualties."

Army Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told senators last week, "This won't look like a shock-and-awe campaign, because that's simply not how ISIL is organized, but it will be a persistent and sustainable campaign." ISIL is another acronym for the Islamic State group.

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said the plan "includes targeted actions against ISIL safe havens in Syria, including its command and control logistics capabilities and infrastructure." He said he and Dempsey approved the plan.

The U.S. has also been increasing its surveillance flights over Syria, getting better intelligence on potential targets and militant movements. None of Monday's airstrikes were from drones.

Military leaders have said about two-thirds of the estimated 31,000 Islamic State militants were in Syria.

Some officials have expressed concern that going after Islamic State militants in Syria could inadvertently help Syrian President Bashar Assad, since the militants are fighting in part to overthrow Assad.

In a speech Sept. 10, Obama vowed to go after the Islamic State militants wherever they may be. And his military and defense leaders told Congress last week that airstrikes within Syria are meant to disrupt the group's momentum and provide time for the U.S. and allies to train and equip moderate Syrian rebels.

The U.S. military has been launching targeted airstrikes in Iraq since August, focusing specifically on attacks to protect U.S. interests and personnel, assist Iraqi refugees and secure critical infrastructure. Last week, as part of the newly expanded campaign, the U.S. began going after militant targets across Iraq, including enemy fighters, outposts, equipment and weapons.

To date U.S. fighter aircraft, bombers and drones have launched about 190 airstrikes within Iraq.

Urged on by the White House and U.S. defense and military officials, Congress passed legislation late last week authorizing the military to arm and train moderate Syrian rebels. Obama signed the bill into law Friday, providing $500 million for the U.S. to train about 5,000 rebels over the next year.

U.S. leaders have also been crisscrossing the globe trying to build a broad international coalition of nations, including Arab countries, to go after the Islamic State group and help train and equip the Iraqi security forces and the Syrian rebels.

The militant group, meanwhile, has threatened retribution. Its spokesman, Abu Mohammed al-Adnani, said in a 42-minute audio statement released Sunday that the fighters were ready to battle the U.S.-led military coalition and called for attacks at home and abroad.

There was a big build-up to Obama’s speech on the ISIS-Dash current offensive. Because he had the courage to reverse the wasted decade of chasing the nonexistent ghost of Iran’s nuclear weapons program, I always hoped that the lessons learned from that diplomatic train wreck would help avoid others.

So far, the report card is not good. Alas, the President seems lashed to the mast of his sinking Syria ship.

The 190,000 Syrian dead so far, with wounded that no one seems to bother to count, and millions of refugees not looking forward to another winter in the camps — none of that has deterred our commander-in-chief. He seems determined to carry the slaughter through to the end of his term, where it will remain a stain on his presidency even if the Iran nuclear accords are successfully concluded.

In addition, the Bush (43) team’s legacy has been one of shame and disgrace, as every year we peel another layer into the depths of the criminal acts they engaged in “under color of law”, the legal term for such abuse. Georgie boy was the perfect puppet president, with Daddy Bush’s old team running most of the show in the background.

We recently released a series of articles on the Sandia National Labs (SNL) report in 2003 that concluded with 100% assurance that the World Trade Center buildings had been brought down with mini-nukes, the warheads having been removed from America’s mothballed stockpiles of “Davy Crockett” early tactical nukes.

Note by Glenn: Some of the information that VeteransToday released was discussed in this shocking interview on VeteransToday Radio where Gordon Duff unveiled bombshell after bombshell of secret information about 9/11! It’s a must listen!

This report had been classified of course, to avoid the hunt for those who had really done the attack, an obstruction of justice which will be carved in stone for the history of mankind.

The first War on Terror got cranked up as if we were all under imminent threat of more attacks. And the twisted irony is we really are under threat of attack specifically because those guilty for the first one have walked away with a free pass… so far. What we got instead was elaborately constructed diversions like Bush’s tough guy speeches…”You’re either with us, or against us.”

America, once held in high esteem internationally, was now telling the world that no country had the freedom to be neutral, or even spend a little more time trying to learn who the really bad terrorists were, including state sponsored terrorists. He figuratively held a gun to the heads of world leaders in his game of “Bush roulette”.

We know that Al Qaeda had been a mainly American Intel construct, as had the radical Muslim movement itself, created by Israel and America’s CIA as an internal foil to the secular Pan Arab movement, which the West felt had to be stopped or their soft power colonial days would be over.

We had years to track down and interview some of those who had worked with bin Laden when he was a CIA colonel with the code name Tim Osman during the Soviet Afghan war. Veterans Today’s own Lee Wanta was Tim’s handler for a number of years, even working with him to gather the remaining Stinger missiles (but not all…despite the sizable bounties) at the end of the war.

Russia Condemns U.S. Airstrikes on ISIS and al-Qaeda; Assad Approves

The Atlantic Wire

Associated Press Videos
U.S. Airstrikes Begin Over Syria

In the wake of the first American-led airstrikes against Islamic State forces in Syria, we're learning that the operation did not just focus on ISIS installations and its oil trade, but also the al-Nusra Front as well. According to Reuters, strikes against the al Qaeda-linked group in northern Syria wrought a death toll of about 50.

Meanwhile, the Wall Street Journal is reporting (subscription) that the U.S.-led effort involved coordination with the Free Syrian Army, which has also just become the recipient of some American weapons.

This is a joint coalition effort of which the Syrian opposition is a full-fledged member," said Oubai Shahbandar, a senior adviser to the coalition who was briefed of the U.S. strikes in advance. He was addressing concerns some elements of the opposition had that the U.S. would turn its back on the armed group and instead partner with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to defeat Islamic State militants."

Russia was quick to condemn the airstrikes. TheWashington Post noted that Russian President Vladimir Putin — the patron saint of territorial integrity — decried the airstrikes as a violation of Syria's sovereignty.

Russia is insistent that U.S. measures to target militants in Syria lack authority without buy-in from Syrian President Bashar al-Assad — a point Russian President Vladimir Putin stressed to U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon Tuesday."

Not only did Syrian dictator Bashar Assad refrain from lashing out against the American-led airstrikes, he seemingly gave a very coded thumbs up:

Meanwhile, in southern Syria, Israel used a Patriot missile to shoot down a Syrian jet that was said to have encroached into Israeli airspace. From Haaretz:

The jet was toppled over the Syrian side of the Quneitra border, after it had flown 800 meters west of the border into Israel and turned around.

The decision to down the jet was made after 1:20 minutes of flight; when the Patriot hit the plane, the Syrian pilots had already turned around and flown back into their territory.

Here is some wild footage taken by Syrian rebels of the pilots parachuting down:

RELATED: The Demise of the Yes Campaign Could Mean the End of the Scottish National Party

Watch video

This was the first time a Syrian jet had been shot down since the early 1980s.

As we noted last week, United Nations peacekeepers fled the Syrian side of the Israeli-Syria border after key crossings were wrested from Assad forces by the al-Nusra Front. The peacekeepers had been in place for 40 years.

If you count the Israeli action along with the United States and its reported partners in Tuesday's airstrikes (Saudi Arabia, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain), six different countries attacked Syria on Tuesday.
