Special Report: Obama Urges Public To Back War On Islamic State

Watch video

By Olivier Knox

On the eve of Sept. 11, President Barack Obama on Wednesday made a prime-time plea for Americans to support an open-ended war on the brutal fighters of the Islamic State — an escalating Middle East campaign with ill-defined conditions for victory and a timetable that will likely take it into his successor’s term.

Obama made certain to distinguish his approach from his predecessor’s large-scale invasions and occupations of Afghanistan and Iraq. He promised that there will be no American ground troops taking the fight to the terrorist group also known as ISIL or ISIS.

“This counterterrorism campaign will be waged through a steady, relentless effort to take out ISIL wherever they exist using our air power and our support for partner forces on the ground,” he said. The model? Smaller-scale conflicts in Yemen and Somalia where U.S. drone strikes and special operators have targeted extremists “for years,” he explained.

Critics of both of those campaigns point out that U.S. forces essentially play a deadly game of “whack-a-mole” with no definitive victory in sight. And U.S. airstrikes regularly kill civilians, fueling anti-American resentment that feeds radical Islamist organizations in a vicious cycle.

The unpopular president’s primetime speech amounted to a legacy-defining expansion of America’s 13-year-old war on terrorism, one almost sure to have far-reaching effects on U.S. national security.

One year exactly after setting aside his own calls for airstrikes on forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Obama vowed to chase IS wherever it goes.

“That means I will not hesitate to take action against ISIL in Syria, as well as Iraq,” he said. “This is a core principle of my presidency: If you threaten America, you will find no safe haven.”

The administration has previously insisted that Obama had the authority to strike IS anywhere, without formally securing a congressional green light. The president said he will not ask lawmakers to vote on a standalone measure authorizing him to use force, though they could be expected to take up measures to fund the new effort.

Before the speech, senior administration officials cited the 2001 Authorization for the Use of Military Force as the legal basis for taking the fight to Syria. Strikingly, a little over a year ago, in a major counterterrorism address at the National Defense University in Washington, Obama said he wanted to “refine and ultimately repeal” the AUMF, which President George W. Bush had relied on for his Global War on Terror.

Obama laid out a sharp strategic shift for American forces in Iraq, where they have rained 154 airstrikes on IS targets since early August as part of a campaign to give Kurdish and Iraqi security forces some breathing room and to safeguard U.S. personnel and facilities.

U.S. air power, which successfully froze IS’s shocking westward drive from strongholds in Syria through much of northern Iraq, will now back up the Kurds and Iraqi forces as they strive to roll back the IS threat.

The president, who explicitly left open the possibility of strikes inside Syria, promised that a broad international coalition, including prominent Muslim nations, would support the campaign. The effort appeared to have at least the tacit backing of archrivals Saudi Arabia and Iran.

Obama also announced that he would send 475 more American troops to shore up friendly local forces, bringing the total U.S. military personnel to 1,518. And he urged Congress to sign off on a plan to step up efforts to arm Syrian rebels from factions less extreme than IS and train them in Saudi Arabia.

“Our objective is clear: We will degrade, and ultimately destroy, ISIL through a comprehensive and sustained counterterrorism strategy,” he said.

But Obama and top aides left unclear what would constitute victory. The Yemen and Somalia campaigns have dragged on for years, and Americans may mostly remember the latter country from the 1993 military debacle immortalized in the book and film “Black Hawk Down.” The Taliban appear resurgent in Afghanistan. Obama ordered the daring raid that killed Osama bin Laden in May 2011 and the airstrikes that are thought to have left “core al-Qaida” badly diminished, but al-Qaida affiliates and rivals like IS have taken their place — even if top officials in recent days have taken pains to say that there is no evidence the Islamic State is taking aim at targets on U.S. soil.

Obama, who took immense heat for saying on Sept. 3 that he aimed to reduce IS to “a manageable problem,” did not spell out in detail how America would know it had achieved victory.

“It will take time to eradicate a cancer like ISIL,” he emphasized.

Congressional reaction fell largely along party lines.

Democratic House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi praised Obama’s “concrete and forceful strategy” against IS and highlighted his pledges to act “with a broad coalition of partners and without using U.S. combat forces on the ground.”

Republican House Speaker John Boehner crowed that Obama had “recanted his earlier dismissals” of the threat posed by IS.

“A speech is not the same thing as a strategy, however,” Boehner said. He expressed concerns that it could “take years” to arm moderate Syrian rebels and shore up Iraqi forces.

“It is also a cause for concern that the president appears to view the effort against ISIL as an isolated counterterrorism campaign, rather than as what it must be: an all-out effort to destroy an enemy that has declared a holy war against America and the principles for which we stand,” he said.

Sen. Saxby Chambliss of Georgia, the top Republican on the Senate Intelligence Committee, said he was “encouraged” by Obama’s strong rhetoric but took a veiled shot at the president’s vow not to send in combat troops.

“We cannot afford to rule out military options or allow ISIL to make any further progress. Our unequivocal and unrelenting goal must be to pursue these terrorists wherever they go and destroy them,” said Chambliss.

Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein, the Intelligence Committee chair, pressed Republicans to rally behind the president.

“Now that a strategy has been outlined, it is critical that Congress and the American people come together in solidarity to support the president and our armed forces,” she said.

Democratic Sen. Mark Udall of Colorado, a critic of Obama’s national security policies who faces a tough re-election fight, urged the president to get explicit authorization from Congress for the expanded campaign.

“I will not give this president — or any other president — a blank check to begin another land war in Iraq,” said Udall.

Sun Unleashes Major Solar Flare at Earth (Video)

SPACE.com

Watch video

A big storm erupted on the sun today (Sept. 10), and Earth was in the crosshairs.

The sun unleashed an X-class solar flare— the most powerful type — at 1:45 p.m. EDT (1745 GMT) today from an Earth-facing sunspot known as Active Region 2158, which also fired off another intense solar flare yesterday. Both space weather events were captured on camera by NASA's sun-watching Solar Dynamics Observatory spacecraft.

Today's solar flare qualifies as an X1.6 storm but poses no danger to anyone on Earth or the astronauts living aboard the International Space Station, NASA officials told Space.com. However, some people's lives could be affected by the solar tempest.

"Impacts to HF [high-frequency] radio communications on the daylight side of Earth are expected to last for more than an hour," researchers with the National Weather Service's Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) wrote in an online update today.

Further effects could be felt later in the week if the sunspot also fired off a cloud of superhot plasma known as a coronal mass ejection (CME). CMEs often accompany powerful flares and can trigger geomagnetic storms when they hit Earth, typically two to three days after erupting.

Geomagnetic storms can temporarily disrupt GPS signals, radio communications and power grids, as well as intensify the beautiful auroral displays known as the northern and southern lights.

It's probable that Wednesday's eruption did indeed produce a CME, SWPC researchers said.

"Initial information suggests that a CME is likely associated with this event, but further analysis is underway at this time," they wrote in today's update.

Scientists classify strong solar flares according to a three-tiered system, with C flares being the weakest, M flares medium-strength and X flares the most powerful.

Wednesday's X1.6 flare qualifies as intense, but is far from the strongest blasted out by the sun this year. For example, our star fired off a monster X4.9 flare in February. (X4 flares are four times as powerful as X1 flares.)

The sun is currently at or near the peak phase of its 11-year activity cycle, which is known as Solar Cycle 24. But our star has been relatively quiescent during Solar Cycle 24, whose max phase is the weakest in about 100 years, scientists say.

NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory is one of several spacecraft regularly monitoring the sun to track space weather events and their potential risks to astronauts and satellites.

U.S. lawmakers embrace fight against Islamic State, some question Obama plan

WABC – NY
Obama outlines mission to expand airstrikes on ISIS

Watch video

By David Lawder and Patricia Zengerle

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. lawmakers say they are on the verge of taking a "war vote" as they consider whether to back President Barack Obama's campaign to destroy Islamic State, and despite broad support for action many fear being drawn into a quagmire.

The White House wants Congress to approve $500 million to train and arm moderate Syrian rebels to battle Islamic State militants, a show of confidence for administration officials as they try to form an international coalition.

The beheadings of two U.S. captives by Islamic State have steeled lawmakers to the need for more military action, and both Democratic and Republican congressional leaders were supportive of Obama's plan on Wednesday.

But some Republicans in particular say they want more information from the administration about its wider strategy to combat global terrorism, and many would prefer a broad vote rather than one focused on funding.

"This could be taken by some as a war vote," said House Appropriations Committee Chairman Hal Rogers, adding that he has reservations about providing weapons that could fall into enemy hands.

"There are so many unknowns that we are dealing with here, it's too early to make any decisions," the Kentucky Republican told reporters shortly before Obama told Americans in a speech on Wednesday night that he had authorized an escalation of his campaign against Islamic State.

Republican Senator Rand Paul, also from Kentucky and normally a leader of his party's isolationist wing, said he would support military action against Islamic State, but wants Obama to "follow the Constitution" and seek congressional authorization.

Just a year ago, U.S. lawmakers recoiled at the thought of military strikes against Syria's government for using chemical weapons. They handed Obama an embarrassing foreign policy defeat as anti-war Democrats joined isolationist Republicans in a rare show of bi-partisanship that killed his request for strikes.

Democrats are crossing the aisle again, this time as they voice strong support for attacking Islamic State, though the overwhelming majority of lawmakers from both parties oppose the idea of sending in any U.S. ground troops.

"I often disagree with the president's foreign policy, but you've got to come together as a nation to stand up to ISIS," said Representative Luke Messer, an Indiana Republican, using another name for Islamic State.

While criticizing Obama's previous handling of the threat from Syria, Representative Tom Cole, an Oklahoma Republican, predicted Obama would ultimately get bipartisan support.

"You back presidents up in a situation like this," Cole said.

Obama has requested that funds for training rebels be included in a stop-gap funding bill that would avert a U.S. government shutdown on Oct. 1, the start of a new fiscal year.

The White House has said Obama he does not believe he needs Congress' formal authorization to attack Islamic State.

CONGRESSIONAL OUTREACH

Obama is making a concerted effort to court lawmakers. A day after the speech, the White House is dispatching top administration officials to conduct closed-door briefings for the full Senate and House on Thursday.

Obama hosted the four leaders of Congress at the White House on Tuesday, and on Wednesday Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Democrat, backed the plan to train Syrian rebels.

Connecticut Democratic Senator Chris Murphy said he, like Obama, favored working with partners in the region.

"I think he laid out a very compelling case," he said.

Still, Murphy had misgivings about arming and training Syrian rebels. "I have long been a skeptic of our ability to maneuver the nuances of an increasingly complicated civil war inside Syria," he said.

Islamic State's brutality and lightning takeover of large swathes of Iraq and Syria have galvanized the public, and their elected representatives.

"There was absolutely zero appetite ... a year ago for any initiation of hostilities beyond what was absolutely necessary to protect us in a very direct way. Now you see, (poll ratings) in the 70s, people saying ISIS must be stopped," said House of Representatives Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, a leading liberal voice in Congress.

Members campaigning ahead of the Nov. 4 elections - in which the entire House and one-third of the Senate are up for grabs - said they had been hearing concerns about Islamic State from voters, a departure from Americans' typical focus on domestic issues.

A Washington Post-ABC News poll this week showed that 71 percent of all Americans support the air strikes in Iraq, up from 54 percent three weeks ago and from 45 percent in June.

Democratic congressional aides said privately that some party members in tough re-election contests are asking that there be no broad authorization vote, to avoiding any chance at alienating their anti-war supporters.

Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, an independent allied with the Democrats, denounced ISIS as a "threat to the world" a "savage group of people".

But Sanders, who voted against the authorization for the use of military force in Iraq in 2002, said it was crucial to avoid following the approach of former President George W. Bush and former Vice President Dick Cheney.

"We were strong and tough under Bush and Cheney and it was the worst foreign policy blunder in the modern history of the United States. I don't think we want to repeat that," he said.

Relatives keep watch over ill-fated 9/11 trial

On 13th anniversary of attacks, victims' families still wait for justice

On a May morning more than two years ago, Rita Lasar and Debra Burlingame waited in silence as the lights dimmed in a movie theater on an Army base deep in Brooklyn, N.Y. The hundreds of seats in the Fort Hamilton theater are, on other occasions, filled with soldiers and their families watching blockbusters. But today, the nearly empty theater has been repurposed to show close family members of 9/11 victims the opening day of the long-awaited trial of the five men accused of masterminding the attacks that killed their loved ones.

Both Lasar and Burlingame lost adored brothers in the Sept. 11 attacks and had waited more than a decade to see the men accused of their murders face justice. Lasar’s brother, Avrame Zelmanowitz, died while waiting for paramedics to rescue his wheelchair-bound co-worker in the North Tower — he didn’t want to leave his friend alone. Burlingame’s brother, Charles Burlingame, was the captain of the American Airlines plane that was hijacked and crashed into the Pentagon that morning.

Though Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and the other four suspected plotters were captured just two years after the attacks, it had taken 10 years to get to this day, the arraignment under a military court slightly modified by the Obama administration to appear more credible to human rights critics. During that time, family members like Lasar and Burlingame had been on tenterhooks as politicians brawled over whether the accused plotters should be tried in a newly created military system, as enemy combatants, as President George W. Bush had wanted, or in the civilian court system, as terrorists, as President Barack Obama had requested. Their names were invoked at every turn by the politicians: Justice for the families, each side argued.

In June 2008, Mohammed, who was waterboarded 183 times while in CIA custody, was arraigned in military court and confessed to orchestrating the attacks. But Obama halted the accused attackers’ military trials as soon as he took office, and his attorney general, Eric Holder, began trying to sell the plan to move the trial to a federal courthouse in Manhattan. The president told dozens of family members in a meeting in the Roosevelt Room in February 2009 that any military commission conviction would most likely be overturned by the Supreme Court. He promised “swift and certain justice” in the civilian system. But the plan blew up, and even loyal Democrats abandoned the cause as political suicide.

Holder admitted defeat in the spring of 2011, thanks in part to the efforts of Burlingame, who led a vocal faction of 9/11 family members opposed to moving the trial away from Guantanamo Bay detention camp in Cuba. She co-founded a group called “Keep America Safe” with Vice President Dick Cheney’s daughter Liz to make her point that terrorists would walk free if they were allowed to be wrapped in the Bill of Rights in the softer civilian system.

Lasar, who led a smaller faction of 9/11 relatives who favored civilian trials, called “Sept. 11 Families for Peaceful Tomorrows,” was crushed that Holder was forced to fold to Congress and abandon his plan. She said she was worried that the men would be unfairly convicted in a kangaroo court. Leaving the 9/11 suspects’ legal fate in the hands of the military was supposed to produce faster and more assured convictions and executions — but it didn’t turn out that way. Today, on the 13th anniversary of the attacks, the perennially stalled trial is mired in lawyers’ pretrial squabbles and is likely years away from even jury selection.

The military trial’s unfolding chaos first became apparent that May day two years ago when 34 of the relatives were finally gathered in the Brooklyn theater for the arraignment. The gathered relatives could agree that they wanted to see justice, even if they disagreed on the forum for it. Lasar and Burlingame, for example, are on opposite sides of the ideological spectrum, but they share an intense passion for this trial. Burlingame, a former attorney who lives in upstate New York, was at this point a battle-hardened activist for military-style justice, having spent 10 years as a lightning rod in the national debate over the response to the attacks. Lasar, a committed antiwar activist, had a lower profile than Burlingame nationally but sensed that her outspoken criticism of the military commissions had made her a polarizing and somewhat unpopular figure among many of the 9/11 relatives. The chasm that separated both women’s politics didn’t change the fact that they were bound together by the tragedy they shared. “We’re family members, whether we want to be or not,” Lasar says of the group.

At 9:23 a.m., the giant screen lit up with a grainy scene beamed straight to Brooklyn from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, via closed-circuit video. The video feed is on a 40-second delay so a special court officer has time to censor any part of the proceedings he believes are classified. When the court officer pushes the “censor” button, a red light next to him flashes on, and the video feed to Brooklyn and other remote viewing locations is abruptly shut off. (One Guantanamo defense attorney, James Harrington, told me this reminded him of “the light that flashes after goals in hockey games.”) Some relatives were also observing the trial in person in Cuba, from a small peanut gallery behind soundproof glass in Camp Justice. The military runs a lottery for relatives to go on closely chaperoned, small-group trips to Guantanamo to watch the proceedings. A few reporters and human rights advocates observe as well.

Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and his four accused co-conspirators — including one wheeled in on a restraint chair — refused to speak to the military judge, Army Col. James Pohl, when he asked if they understood the thousands of murder charge counts they faced. Pohl warned their defense attorneys that he would listen to all their complaints at a designated time in the trial, but he was quickly interrupted by a lawyer who wanted to cite a Supreme Court case to object to the entire existence of the trial. One accused attacker stood up and began praying out loud outside of the designated prayer time, delaying the proceedings for 20 minutes. The defendants’ translation headphones kept falling off, forcing the court to translate the proceedings into Arabic over a loudspeaker. The judge and attorneys yelled over the din of the translation in order to hear each other in English. At one point, defense attorney Cheryl Bormann suggested that women on the prosecution team were dressed immodestly and were offending her client’s religious sensibilities, causing some of the family members watching in Brooklyn to audibly protest. Two of the defendants leisurely leafed through a copy of the Economist, further enraging the watching family members.

Robert Reeg, a firefighter who was severely injured responding to Ground Zero and a friend of Burlingame’s, remembers feeling incredibly frustrated that Pohl didn’t come down harder on the defense’s antics as the hours passed in the theater. He decided that the pressure from human rights groups, who objected to the entire military commission system, had made Pohl hypersensitive to being perceived as too antagonistic to the defendants. Even Burlingame, who had fought so hard to keep these men in Cuba, said she felt a sinking feeling as the day dragged on.

“I just got a really bad feeling about what was going to happen,” Burlingame said of watching the arraignment. “The trial is going to take a very long time.”

And then, after a brief lunch break nearby where the family members chatted politely with each other, the defense team demanded something truly unbelievable. They asked for the entire 87-page indictment, a damning document accusing their clients of a host of ills, to be read out loud and translated simultaneously into Arabic. Defense attorneys don’t typically want the court reminded of the charges their clients face.

“In 12 years of being a judge, this is the first time I’ve heard counsel wanting them to be read,” Pohl said in disbelief. But he allowed it.

Relatives began trickling out of the theater, frustrated and angry. The last part of the charge sheet is simply the full names of all 2,976 victims, which the court officer read out loud. Two and a half hours later — when the last names had been read and the Cuban video feed had been cut — only Burlingame and Lasar remained in the theater, two lonely sentinels for justice. It was 10:30 at night.

The two women thought that day would never end, but more than two years later, the disorderly arraignment seems like an omen of the chaos that was to come. The court is still bogged down by lawyers’ spats and by one attorney’s estimate that it is at least two years away from the jury selection phase. The defense and prosecution have argued in motion after motion over whether Khalid Sheikh Mohammed should be allowed to wear a $39 camouflage vest, instead of his prison garb, to Camp Justice, for example, or over what hour in the morning guards should be allowed to wake him.

Mohammed was captured 10 years ago but has yet to even submit a plea of guilty or not guilty for the crimes the government has brought against him. Neither have the other four men. On one surreal day last year, Judge Pohl appeared to realize for the first time that offsite CIA operatives were able to push the “censor” button without his permission to cut off the video feed. He angrily ordered the agency to “unconnect whatever wires need to be unconnected” so that he again could have sole control over censorship. Meanwhile, federal courts have consistently slapped down the military commissions, limiting their powers and calling into question whether their convictions — assuming they’re ever reached — will stand up under appeal.

And yet for the people most affected by the crime at issue, those who lost a close family member on Sept. 11, this trial is all they have. It’s the closest thing to justice their government has offered them.

“Trials are about healing, justice is about healing and taking the venom out of something that otherwise people would just go out and exact justice on their own,” says Karen Greenberg, the director of the Center on National Security at Fordham University’s law school and a critic of the military commissions. “This country has not made good by these victims.”

What’s more baffling, given the country’s continuing preoccupation with 9/11, is that no one seems to care that much. Before the arraignment, media outlets pumped up the proceedings as the “trial of the century.” But the public has paid little attention to the slow-as-molasses trial since then. Even many family members have stopped watching and attendance at the base's movie theater has dropped off since the arraignment two years ago — more from frustration than disinterest. Burlingame hasn’t been back. She says she’s waiting for jury selection before she returns. “This stuff drags you back to a really dark place,” she says of the reason many relatives have stopped following the trial. Lasar has found herself the only one to show up to the base on several occasions, a spectral presence in the giant theater, keeping watch over a trial that was supposed to matter.

Lasar, an energetic 82-year-old, is technically retired, but her passion for the trial in Guantanamo is essentially a full-time job. She has kept track of every twist and turn of the proceedings, possesses an encyclopedic knowledge of the motions that have been filed, and closely follows all the unfolding dramas as they emerge — among them, whether an FBI informant infiltrated the defense team and the ongoing debate, now more than six years old, over the mental fitness of one of the defendants, Ramzi bin al-Shibh.

In addition to her support for a civilian trial, she’s well known among the other 9/11 family members for not wanting any of the accused terrorists to be executed, because of her personal opposition to capital punishment. During breaks in the proceedings at Fort Hamilton, Lasar tries to make polite conversation with relatives who feel very differently. “I’m not well loved,” she says, unperturbed. “But I’m not hated to my face.” (Reeg, the firefighter, says that some conversations at Fort Hamilton can become “divisive” and heated but that, for the most part, everyone remains cordial.)

On the few occasions when Lasar hasn’t watched the trial from Fort Hamilton’s movie theater or in person at Camp Justice in Guantanamo, the octogenarian sits in front of her computer in the spare bedroom of the East Village apartment that she shares with her cat, Moxie, refreshing the Twitter feed of Carol Rosenberg, a Miami Herald journalist who’s been covering Guantanamo’s prison and military commissions since 2002.

As frustrating and disappointing as the trial can be, it also carries a strange fascination for her. “It’s as interesting as Shakespeare is,” Lasar says.

In a courtroom drawing reviewed by the U.S. military, 9/11 victim family members watch a pretrial hearing for Khalid …

As the military tribunal has dragged on, circuslike, in Cuba, the Obama administration has moved several terrorist suspects through federal court.

Last March, a federal jury in New York quietly convicted Osama bin Laden’s son-in-law, Sulaiman Abu Ghaith, of terrorism within a year of his arrest. The contrast between the inefficacy of the Guantanamo commissions and the federal courts has not been lost on some of the family members who were most ardently opposed to the federal system.

“The judges in federal courts are much stricter than Judge Pohl,” Burlingame says, citing Judge Leonie Brinkema, who presided in the case of the 20th hijacker, Zacarias Moussaoui. “She was very tough on the attorneys. She had Moussaoui behaved. The minute he misbehaved in court, she said, 'Stop it, or you’re out of here.'”

But despite Burlingame’s admiration for the way federal judges have handled terror cases, she still believes that approach would not work for Mohammed or any of the other high-value detainees. Because they were in CIA black site custody and captured “on the battlefield,” their cases contain more classified information and should be subject to the military censorship Guantanamo can provide, she says.

Burlingame and other family members who support the military tribunal blame the defendants’ attorneys for slowing down the process by filing hundreds of what they believe are frivolous motions. Burlingame says she’s “disgusted” by their tactics.

Jim Harrington, who defends accused attacker Ramzi bin al-Shibh, said that none of their motions are frivolous — they’re just trying to navigate a completely new court system whose rules sometimes appear to get made up as they go along.

“You have to remember that the government took 12 years to start this case, and now everybody accuses us of trying to delay, but any kind of delays that we have caused have all been for good reasons,” Harrington said.

Col. Morris Davis, who used to be lead prosecutor for the Guantanamo tribunal until he resigned in 2007, said he thinks it’s clear the commissions aren’t working, despite the best efforts of Brig. Gen. Mark Martins, the well-respected current lead prosecutor. Morris was at Guantanamo when the 14 high-value detainees, including the 9/11 five, were transferred from CIA custody to prison in 2006. “Of that group there’s only one who’s been tried and convicted, and his case is over and done,” Davis said. “And that case is Ahmed Ghailani, who was prosecuted in federal court.”

Ghailani, a suspect in the 1998 U.S. Embassy bombings, was convicted of just one of the 285 charges he faced in a federal court in 2009. Though he was still sentenced to life in prison, the shaky outcome fueled critics of the use of federal courts for terror trials and helped kill Holder’s civilian court plan.

“I could care less about Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, but it does concern me what this trial will say about us as a country and as a people,” Davis said.

Jim Riches, who lost his firefighter son on Sept. 11, stands in his front yard in Brooklyn. Riches frequently observes …

Jim Riches, a retired firefighter whose son, also a firefighter, died at Ground Zero, said he wants to ask the politicians who argued so fervently against civilian trials in New York for the 9/11 five what they think of their decision now. “Are you sure the military tribunals was the correct way to go?” he asks. “Where are those people now? They didn’t lose anybody, but we lost people.”

But the trial has now dragged on for so long that even the finger pointing — a sport in Washington — seems to have played itself out. All that’s left is a weary fatalism about how and whether justice will be served.

“In any other situation, if you said your loved one was gunned down on the street tonight and it’s going to be 13 years before the trial starts, nobody would stand for it,” said Neil MacBride, the former U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia. “The DA would be impeached.”

In the absence of repercussions or change, Lasar still keeps her lonely watch over the trial proceedings, hoping for convictions for the five men who stand accused of taking her brother from her.

“I hope I’m alive to see it,” Lasar said on a recent hot day in August. If there ever is a conviction, she’ll be in the center of the Fort Hamilton movie theater, watching.

Nearing the 13th anniversary of the terrorist attacks, victims' families are still waiting for justice.

9/11 Verdict: Mainstream Media Guilty Of The Biggest Coverup In History

911By Cosmic Convergence, September 7, 2014 – http://tinyurl.com/k62ndfr

“Many corporate titans ought to be in prison for knowingly and willfully, deliberately and purposefully, covering up the treasonous and heinous crimes committed against America on 9/11 … by rogue elements throughout the US Government” - 9/11 Criminal Investigator

Really, just how long does the entire mainstream media (MSM) think they will get away with participating in the coverup of the 9/11 Crime Of The Millennium?

It has now been reported on C-SPAN that well over 2200 qualified architects and engineers have literally demolished the official 9/11 Commission Report and there’s nary a peep about it on CNN … or FOX News … or CBS … or MSNBC!

It has been many years since these dedicated and courageous engineering and architectural professionals have been working diligently on this monumental research project.

In fact their highly authoritative work constitutes the greatest criminal investigation in USA history.

And, yet, there’s no curiosity about their indisputable findings within the MSM.

There’s no in depth reporting about numerous engineering, architectural and metallurgical impossibilities asserted in the official NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology*) reports. The NIST is literally permitted to violate laws of physics and chemistry, architecture and engineering, without any scrutiny or critical thinking from the Fourth Estate?!

* “NIST’s FY 2014 resources total $850.0 million in direct appropriations, an estimated $47.3 million in service fees, and $107.0 million from other agencies.

“The agency operates in two locations: Gaithersburg, Md., (headquarters—234-hectare/578-acre campus) and Boulder, Colo., (84-hectare/208-acre campus). NIST employs about 3,000 scientists, engineers, technicians, and support and administrative personnel. NIST also hosts about 2,700 associates from academia, industry, and other government agencies, who collaborate with NIST staff and access user facilities. In addition, NIST partners more than 1,300 manufacturing specialists and staff at more than 400 MEP service locations around the country.”

(Per www.nist.gov)

That there are virtually no media interviews conducted by the MSM with these distinguished researchers and eminent scientists who have spent years ferreting out 9/11 truth is as mind-boggling as it is exasperating.

Particularly when the 9/11 terrorist attacks have turned out to be the single greatest defining moment of the new millennium having HUGE consequences for the United States of America, as well as profound impacts on the entire community of nations.TheWarOnTerrorIsAHoax911WasAnInsideJobHow can this be so … … … EXCEPT BY DESIGN?!

“Calculated and premeditated, planned and coordinated by those elements within the US Federal Government who would use the event to change the world forever” is the way one researcher described the 9/11 terror events.

“Those who planned and executed the 9/11 attacks must have spent years tending to the many critical details required to bring two skyscrapers down into their own footprint. They also had to have operated within the various government agencies and contracting entities necessary to gain access to highly secured buildings.

“For instance the demolition explosives, which obviously brought down Building #7, would have required months of planning and placement of the charges in an ultra high security environment.”

Many throughout the 9/11 Truth Movement have wondered just how long the MSM plans on keeping this ridiculous charade going. With the internet on full tilt in every corner of the globe, how will the reams of evidence pointing to a completely different crime-spree scenario from the one advanced in the 9/11 Commission Report ever be contained? Once this genie is out of the bottle — AND IT HAS BEEN OUT FOR SOME TIME — it’s out forever and with terrible consequences to those who know the real deal.

It’s very important to point out that the ever-growing volumes of high integrity evidence found on the World Wide Web have already been downloaded onto every ‘truther’ computer in sight. Hence, this highly incriminating and incontrovertible evidence cannot be conveniently lost, as is so often the case with high level government crimes and corporate transgressions.

Therefore, we ask again, just how long did they (MSM) think they would get away with this crime against humanity committed in broad daylight in two of the most important cities on the planet?

Misprision of Felony

For those who do not know, misprision of felony is a crime when one possesses information of a felony yet refuses to report it, particularly when the individual is a federal employee. In the case of an outright crime against humanity in which high treason, premeditated mass murder and serious acts of terrorism were committed in the course of the various 9/11 events, we have a very serious problem indeed.

Screen-Shot-us fedral law

Actually, the MSM has a very serious problem indeed. More significantly, the many government employees who had to have had foreknowledge of the numerous crimes of terrorism are even more vulnerable to this indictment.

Given the normally cozy relationship between the upper echelons of government and highest levels of the MSM, there can be no doubt that the media was informed of the real 9/11 inside job so that there would be no objective reporting in real time. Nor would there ever be any serious investigative journalism on the subject, as everyone has seen for the past 13 years.

There is absolutely no excuse for why the MSM was, is, and will be AWOL, except that they were directly involved in the 9/11 coverup.

Truly, as the 4th Estate, also known as the fourth branch of government, the mainstream media has systematically arrogated power unto itself over decades. It actually prides itself for regularly having privileged access to inside information, especially where it concerns the inner workings of government. Therefore, all of the corporate titans throughout the MSM must have been informed about the 9/11 plot well before its occurrence. As they always do, their executive editors and news anchors were surely given strict orders not to deviate one iota from the “19 Arabs Did It” script handed to them … by their g-men handlers.

By the way, one major news anchor did depart quite substantially for the official, fictitious narrative — Peter Jennings of ABC News.

He came down with lung cancer and died not too long after his rebellious reporting about the 9/11 demolition of the Twin Towers. As a matter of fact, Jennings was so distressed by what he actually saw on 9/11 that he admitted to taking up smoking again. You really have to wonder about where he bought his cigarettes?!

The Totally Fabricated Government Narrative Was Trumpeted While The Buildings Were Still Coming Down

For those who doubt direct MSM complicity in the still raging 9/11 coverup, all that’s necessary to understand the truth is to review the worldwide media reports on September 11th, 2001.

The entire crime scene, as chaotic and mayhem filled as it was, provided the investigatory context in which the various law enforcement agencies immediately identified the perpetrators, the method and the motive. Let’s face it, a battalion of Sherlock Holmes could not have drawn such conclusions so quickly, nor with such conviction.

And, yet, those 19 Muslim ‘terrorists’, in addition to Osama bin Laden, had already been indicted, convicted, and sentenced by every major MSM outlet in the Western sphere of influence … while WTC buildings were still burning?!

Implausible? Highly! Impossible? Most definitely!

Unless, of course, the concerned law enforcement and intelligence agencies were a part of the whole scheme … absurdly false narrative and all.

Because of the sheer enormity and far-reaching ramifications of the 9/11 false flag attacks, this single media strategy was essential if the real perpetrators were to successfully implement the conspiratorial plot.

By not allowing any other crime theories to be disseminated by the MSM, TPTB all but guaranteed that the typical American citizen would be imprinted with the numerous 9/11 falsehoods being parroted up to this very day.

In many cases, that imprinting seems to be extraordinarily indelible thereby providing a critical mass of extremely naive supporters of the equally spurious War on Terror. As could only be expected, the MSM has carried oceans of water for the Feds on that score as well.

Whoever Owns The Media Dictates The Disseminated Facts, Regardless Of Their Truthfulness

Where it concerns the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the subsequent and ongoing coverup has turned out to be as great of a crime as the death and destruction wrought in NYC and DC and PA. While that may sound incredible at first glance, all one has to do is look at the wars and conflicts which have been initiated with the clarion call —

“REMEMBER 9/11!”

As well as the other clarion call:

remember-9-11-quotes-3

The most significant take-away from this retrospective 9/11 analysis is that the Mainstream Media is perhaps as culpable as anyone is for those atrocities. Only because of their sustained protection by the MSM, do the real perps continue to avoid prosecution. Only because the MSM promised to shield them did the NeoCon government cabal pull off 9/11 in the first place.

The MSM provided extraordinary cover on the day of the attacks, and they have only diverted the nation’s attention since then to an obviously fabricated storyline.

Therefore, it is now imperative that the body politic look to those who own — and really control — the major media outlets. For it is there that can be found those who participated directly in the 9/11 coverup — the most consequential coverup in modern history. Only by pursuing those who had the most to gain from the 9/11 crimes will there be sufficient deterrence of similar false flag operations in the future.

The alternative news media have already proven circumstantially that the 7/7/05 London bombings and 3/11/04 Madrid bombings were cooked up in the very same government black operation headquarters that hatched the 9/11/01 NYC-DC bombings. By making short work of these trademarked conspiracies to generate terror, the alt-news realm has undoubtedly averted many a false flag over the past thirteen years.

Conclusion:

The Mainstream Media has clearly proven itself to be the greatest enemy of We, the People.

Rather than hold government and corporations accountable for their often criminal conduct, the MSM is almost always at the scene of the crime distracting, deceiving and diverting.

This state of affairs CANNOT have a happy ending for the Republic. Should the current incestuous relationships between these various guilty parties continue proliferate, civil society will eventually degenerate into a cross between 1984 and and A BRAVE NEW WORLD with a dose of LORD OF THE FLIES thrown in.

Therefore, it is our hope that the MSM will be taken to task by those folks who possess the power and influence to do so.

Likewise, the citizenry must begin to unplug from the MSM, or else they will forever expose themselves to so much pap and piffle. Pablum of this nature, it must be recognized, is not without earth-shattering consequences as everyone has seen in Iraq … … …

and Afghanistan …

and Libya …

and Syria …

and Iran …

and Palestine …

and Pakistan …

and Lebanon …

and Egypt …

and Somalia …

and Sudan …

and Chad …

and Venezuela

and Argentina

and Georgia,

and the Ukraine.

Given the current state of world affairs, it has never been more urgent to launch a global campaign in order to achieve the following:

I. State-sponsored terrorism conducted by the Anglo-American Axis must be stopped BY ALL MEANS NECESSARY!”

II. Mainstream Media enabling and coverups must be terminated BY EVERY MEANS POSSIBLE!

media-united

Fortunately, the alternative media is now doing its part to thwart both of these “divide and rule” entities.

Hopefully enough people will wake up to the oppressive realities all about them and take back their power, starting with the MSM.
