Snowden seeks asylum in sunny Brazil

AFP

According to a new NBC News poll, more Americans oppose Edward Snowden’s decision to flee the U.S. with thousands of stolen documents and reveal confidential details about the National Security Agency’s surveillance programs than those who support his actions. The findings come in the wake of “Nightly News” anchor Brian Williams’ wide-ranging, exclusive interview with Snowden , which aired on NBC primetime last Wednesday. Yet, the nation’s opinion of the former government contractor turned world’s most wanted man changes significantly by age.

Brasília (AFP) - Former intelligence contractor Edward Snowden, wanted by US authorities and currently living in Russia, said in a TV interview that he has applied for asylum in Brazil.

"I would love to live in Brazil," Snowden told Brazil's Globo TV on Sunday.

Snowden's temporary asylum in Russia expires in August. Washington has revoked his US passport, so his travel options are limited.

Snowden, who was interviewed with reporter Glenn Greenwald by his side, said that he has formally asked several countries for asylum, including Brazil.

Greenwald is an American living in Brazil. He writes for The Guardian and has published much of the information that Snowden has leaked.

Brazil's foreign ministry however has said that it has received no formal asylum request from Snowden.

In the interview Snowden said that he would not offer documents to any country in exchange for a safe haven, because asylum should be granted for humanitarian reasons.

However he said that he had more documents to release relating to US spying on countries that include Britain and Brazil.

When documents he released last year showed that US agencies had been spying on Brazil, President Dilma Rousseff cancelled a state visit to Washington.

In an earlier interview with NBC Snowden said that he was open to the possibility of clemency or amnesty, and would like to return home one day.

The Obama administration says Snowden is welcome to return, but only to face trial for exposing sensitive information it says aided US enemies.

Russia says Ukraine situation worsening, will submit U.N. resolution

Reuters

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia will submit a draft resolution to the U.N. Security Council on Monday calling for an immediate end to worsening violence in Ukraine and the creation of humanitarian corridors in the east of the country, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.

Lavrov said that Western nations had assured Russia the situation in Ukraine would improve after its May 25 presidential election but that "everything is happening in exactly the opposite way".

"People are dying every day. Peaceful civilians are suffering more and more - the army, military aviation and heavy weapons continue to be used against them," he said when asked about Ukraine at a joint news conference after talks with his Mauritanian counterpart.

The draft resolution "will contain a demand for the immediate halt to violence and the beginning of actual negotiations with the aim of establishing a stable and reliable ceasefire," Lavrov said.

It will also include "a demand for the creation, without delay, of humanitarian corridors though which peaceful civilians could leave combat zones if they wish," he said. The text would also call for guarantees of unhindered access for humanitarian aid.

Ukrainian President-elect Petro Poroshenko and the pro-Western authorities in Kiev have defied Moscow's repeated calls for an end to the government's operation against armed separatists in the eastern Donetsk and Luhansk regions, which border Russia. Russia calls it a "punitive operation", while Kiev says it is aimed at combating terrorists.

After missing soldier's exchange for 5 Taliban, some troubling questions

Some who served with Bowe Bergdahl say he was either a deserter or considering it

Fellow soldiers call Bergdahl a deserter, not a hero

President Barack Obama called the release of Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl after five years' captivity in Afghanistan "a reminder of America’s unwavering commitment to leave no man or woman in uniform behind on the battlefield," but some of his fellow soldiers are continuing to claim he deserted his post in 2009.

Javier Ortiz, for one. The Army combat medic told the Washington Post he believes Bergdahl should be tried for desertion. Former Sgt. Matt Vierkant, a member of Bergdahl's platoon when he went missing, told CNN, "Bowe Bergdahl deserted during a time of war and his fellow Americans lost their lives searching for him."

And Nathan Bradley Bethea, who served with Bergdahl, wrote that he "was a deserter, and soldiers from his own unit died trying to track him down" in a recent column for the Daily Beast.

Bergdahl was exchanged for five Taliban prisoners from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, on Saturday, after months of negotiation led by the government of Qatar. Republicans, among them specifically Sen. John McCain, questioned whether the U.S. got the best of that deal, referring to the former Gitmo detainees as the "hardest of the hard core."

The circumstances surrounding Bergdahl's capture have been murky for years. Some reports said he was captured while sitting on a makeshift latrine. Others said Bergdahl simply left his post and never returned.
There are also reports of emails Bergdahl sent to his parents before he was captured that express his disillusionment with America's presence in Afghanistan, and that he was considering deserting. Those emails were published by Rolling Stone in 2012, but could not be authenticated by the Associated Press, according to CBS News.

CNN reports that at least six soldiers lost their lives while searching for Bergdahl.

While speaking to reporters on Sunday, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel declined to comment on whether the military would pursue any disciplinary actions against Bergdahl.

"Our first priority is assuring his well-being and his health and getting him reunited with his family," Hagel said. "Other circumstances that may develop and questions — those will be dealt with later."
