	Over 10,000 Have Died in the Syrian Uprising (Video) by Kristina Chew May 16, 2012 Over 10,000 people have now been killed in the Syrian uprising, which began over a year ago in the southern city of Dera’a. According to the United Nations, the level of violence in Syria remains “unacceptable,” in the face of an April 12 call for a ceasefire. International pressure on Syria to end the violence has only grown as opposition strongholds such as Homs and Idlib have been besieged and bombarded. Hundreds of UN monitors have been deployed in Syria to monitor the regime’s compliance with the peace plan with inconclusive results, in part because of the Syrian government’s restrictions on their travel. On Tuesday, May 15, six monitors were caught in an attack in Khan Sheikhoun in Idlib after Syrian forces fired on a funeral procession. They were returned to their base in Hama the following day. Al Jazeera reports that a UN spokesperson describes three UN vehicles as being damaged by an “improvised explosive device.” A video shows the UN monitors leaving Khan Shiekhoun with the damaged vehicles being hauled away on trucks. Parliamentary elections were held on May 7 with the ruing Ba’ath Party winning two-thirds of the seats in the 250-member parliament and the government’s election commission claiming that turnout was 51 percent. But amateur videos showed cities including Homs, Hama and Dera’a all but shut down to protest the elections. In a rare television interview with Russiya 24, a Russian state TV station, President Bashar al-Assad reiterated many of the same positions about the protests and the opposition that he has been making during the past 15 months. Assad blamed foreign-backed terrorists for the violence and asserted that last week’s parliamentary elections had not been widely boycotted: “We have an acute problem with terrorism. Terrorists don’t care about reform, they are not fighting for reform.” Assad claimed that the majority of Syrians support the regime and that “foreign mercenaries” from other Arab countries are fighting for the opposition. The protests in Syria began peacefully following the arrest of a group of teenagers for writing anti-regime graffiti in Dera’a. Activists, says the New York Times, contend that the opposition has only armed itself in the face of a continuous bloody crackdown by security forces and the Syrian army, under the orders of Assad’s government. In Damascus, a protest movement, “Stop the Killing,” has emerged, with the aim of restoring the protests to their original peaceful form; many of the nascent movement’s organizers have been arrested. European markets fell as fears of a continent-wide contagion from goverment-less Greece’s economic crisis also spread. Shares in Bankia, Spain’s fourth biggest bank formed in 2010 through a merger of seven struggling regional savings institutions, today plummeted by 27 per cent. The pan-European FTSE 300 index was down 0.9 per cent at 984.22 points by 10.26.am, close to a four-and-a-half-month low of 983.95 points reached yesterday. Spain’s benchmark IBEX index fell nearly 2 per cent to its lowest level since mid-2003. It came following a report in El Mundo newspaper that its customers had withdrawn more than €1billion from their accounts over the past week. It added to losses incurred yesterday after the European Central Bank said it had stopped providing liquidity to some Greek banks because they had not been successfully recapitalised. Greece is set to hold fresh elections on June 17 after voters rejected austerity measures imposed on it by the European Union and the International Monetary Fund, which has heightened fears it will have to leave the eurozone. Investors are also worried by the possibility of contagion from a Greek exit from the euro spreading to other countries such as Spain or Italy. ‘It’s not Greece leaving the euro that is the major issue, it’s the domino effect,’ said John Bearman, chief investment officer at British firm Thomas Miller Investment, which manages roughly €3billion worth of assets. Greece today held a swearing-in ceremony of Coalition of the Radical Left party leader Alexis Tsipras and former Prime Minister George Papandreou. But their leadership will be short-lived, as their parliament will be dissolved tomorrow so they can arrange new elections. Concerns over Spain were highlighted by data showing the country had slipped back into recession during the first quarter, while the country’s medium-term borrowing costs rose sharply during a bond auction. Tensions within the European banking system were also exposed by the fact that key eurozone three-month bank-to-bank lending rates had edged higher today for the first time since the European Central Bank pumped in ultra-cheap, three-year funds in December. Royal London Asset Management’s European equities fund manager Neil Wilkinson said he had reduced his exposure to financial stocks in recent weeks, as a result of the worsening European debt crisis. Wilkinson, who manages around £425million worth of assets, said his portfolio was 70 per cent invested in northern European equities markets such as France, Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland, with a small amount in Italy and Spain. Wilkinson said he owned Italian bank Intesa and Spanish pharmaceuticals group Grifols, but was otherwise shying away from stocks in countries such as Portugal, Spain, Italy and Greece. ‘The selling pressure is going to continue,’ he said. News of the run came as France’s new President marked his first official day in the office by slashing his ministers’ pay by 30 per cent. Francois Hollande’s new Socialist government said it was ‘setting an example’ with the symbolic move, aimed at drawing a clear distinction with the previous administration. Nicolas Sarkozy, voted out of power earlier this month, famously hiked up his pay 170 per cent to €19,000 per month on taking office in 2007. Senior ministers then said their first concern was tackling the European sovereign debt crisis – and promoting their new boss’s view of shifting the focus from austerity to growth. Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius told news channel BFMTV: ‘The priority is to disentangle the crisis in Europe. ‘I am profoundly European but we need a different Europe, a Europe that is much more focused on jobs.’

At Ba'asyir's trial, I testified about a September 2002 secret meeting at which I interpreted for a top secret meeting between the president of Indonesia, Megawati Soekarnoputri, and three American representatives: US Ambassador to Indonesia Ralph Boyce, National Security Council representative Karen Brooks, and a special assistant sent personally by President Bush (who revealed privately to me that she was a CIA agent). 	Endangered Beluga Whales At Risk From Destructive Oil and Gas Drilling by Alex Ralston, Center for Biological Diversity May 18, 2012 Endangered Cook Inlet beluga whales are threatened by oil drilling and exploration, according to a lawsuit just filed by the Center for Biological Diversity and allies. The suit challenges a permit issued by the National Marine Fisheries Service to Apache Alaska Corporation to allow oil and gas exploration in Alaska’s Cook Inlet, home to a dwindling population of 280 beluga whales protected by the Endangered Species Act. Each year, there are fewer and fewer of these whales left. Oil and gas drilling activities expose Cook Inlet beluga whales to earsplitting underwater noise that threatens their survival. All that noise in the marine environment makes survival impossible for these endangered whales. Apache Alaska Corporation has acquired more than 300,000 acres of oil and gas leases in Cook Inlet. To find and develop oil and gas fields, Apache intends to conduct seismic exploration in the inlet over the next three to five years. Every year that Apache conducts its survey operations, it will spend 160 days surveying the inlet for oil and gas, 24 hours per day. For 10 to 12 of those hours, Apache will deploy in-water airguns, operate pingers and detonate explosives. Airgun noise is loud enough to mask whale calls over thousands of miles, destroying their capacity to communicate and breed; it can drive whales to abandon their habitat and cease foraging, and closer in it can cause hearing loss and death. “Cook Inlet is rapidly losing its belugas, and these smart, beautiful animals are unique and irreplaceable,” said the Center for Biological Diversity’s Alaska Director Rebecca Noblin. “The Fisheries Service should be doing everything in its power to protect them from dying off, not rubber-stamping every risky oil and gas project that comes along.” Of the five genetically unique beluga populations in Alaska, Cook Inlet belugas number the fewest. The group is under great duress from increasing industrialization of its habitat near Anchorage. In recent years, the population has plummeted from approximately 1,300 to 284 whales. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Alaska Fisheries Science Center’s annual survey of endangered Cook Inlet beluga whales shows a 20 percent decline in population estimates from previous years — 321 in 2009 and 340 in 2010 compared to 284 in 2011. The 2011 estimate is the second-lowest since annual surveys began in 1993. (The lowest estimate was in 2005, when belugas numbered just six fewer than this year’s estimate.) “Belugas are sacred to my tribe and part of our tradition,” said Gary Harrison, traditional chief of Chickaloon Native Village. “Because so few of the whales remain, we no longer hunt them. Indigenous peoples are working to protect these whales, yet industry can come into the Cook Inlet and harass 30 beluga whales every year as they look for oil and gas. It’s simply wrong.” In April 2006, the Center for Biological Diversity joined other conservation groups in petitioning the Fisheries Service to list Cook Inlet belugas as endangered under the Endangered Species Act. The government listed the whales as endangered in October 2008 and designated more than 3,000 square miles of the Cook Inlet as critical habitat essential to the whales’ survival in April 2011. 	Japanese Ships to Kill 260 Whales in Name of "Science" by Kristina Chew May 19, 2012 Commercial whaling is banned under international treaty but, since 1987, Japan has been taking advantage of a loophole under which it is possible to conduct lethal research in the name of science. For this reason, two Japanese whaling ships, the Yushin Maru and Yushin Maru No 2, left the Shimonoseki port in Yamaguchi, western Japan, to join the Nisshin Maru, their mother vessel. A fishery ministry official says that the fleet is scheduled to catch about 260 whales, including 100 minke whales and 10 sperm whales, between now and early August. The northern minke whale is considered “Lower Risk Near Threatened” according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN’s) Red List of Threatened Species. The sperm whale is an endangered species, after at least a million were killed by commercial whalers in the 19th and 20th centuries. Japan has “misused and abused” the research provision, says the Humane Society International. In its initial formulation, the research provision was “meant to allow the killing of a few whales a year to answer scientific questions that could only be answered by examining dead animals.” But every year, Japan has increased its sample size sand also “sells the meat and blubber to its domestic market.” The Humane Society International also says that both Iceland and South Korea have been exploiting the scientific research loophole, to obtain whale meat to sell Japan. International Whaling Commission to Meet In just about six weeks, the International Whaling Commission (IWC) is to hold its annual meeting in Panama. As the BBC‘s Richard Black writes, two sure-to-cause contention issues are on the agenda: (1) the Latin American bloc has started a a bid to create a whale sanctuary in the South Atlantic Ocean; (2) Japan has set down a motion to reserve its right to request a commercial or quasi-commercial hunting quota for minke whales in its coastal waters. However, both of these issues have been previously introduced and tabled numerous times. Reviewing the history of past IWC meetings, Black notes how “febrile and anarchic,” and “politicized”, the world of whaling can be. For instance, since IWC rules require a three-quarters majority, it is extremely hard to bring important measures forward to be discussed, as the commission’s members are equally split between those who oppose whaling and those who vote for it to occur. The IWC delegates could “spend days locked in meetings where wrangling about the definition of a quorum is used as a proxy for much more fundamental divisions.” How many more whales will be killed in the meantime?
