Russia not convinced by US evidence on Syria

MOSCOW (AP) — The information the U.S. showed Moscow trying to prove that the Syrian regime was behind an alleged chemical weapons attack is "absolutely unconvincing," Russia's foreign minister said Monday.

The United States insists Syrian President Bashar Assad's troops were behind the chemical attack on Aug. 21, which they say killed over 1,400 people, and is considering strikes against his regime. Moscow is Assad's key ally and weapons supplier, and its protector at the United Nations.

Speaking at Russia's top diplomatic school, Sergey Lavrov said the evidence Washington presented was not detailed.

"Yes, they showed us some findings but there was nothing specific there: no geographic coordinates, no names, no proof that the tests were carried out by the professionals," Lavrov said. He did not say what tests he was referring to.

"What our American, British and French partners showed us in the past and have showed just recently is absolutely unconvincing," Lavrov said. "And when you ask for more detailed proof they say all of this is classified so we cannot show this to you."

Hi Myrna, and sorry but I had not seen your post. I am sure all this is as you say. I even posted a video with the info on the situation a few days ago, but on the spur of the moment I have not been able to locate it back until now. Meanwhile I am posting from the last msm reports, where if you notice, nearly all of the comments from readers are against starting a war or at least against any U.S. intervention. Thanks anyway,
Miguel

Yes Mr Rasmussen, but where is the "concrete information" that you are talking about? Note: Since the video clip featured at the beginning of this article is not viewable here, I have replaced it with the YouTube video that you can now watch below.

NATO chief convinced Syrian government behind chemical attack

Reuters

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - NATO's secretary-general said on Monday he had seen evidence convincing him Syrian authorities were behind a deadly chemical weapons attack and said it would send a "dangerous signal to dictators" if the world did not respond firmly.

However, Anders Fogh Rasmussen said it was up to individual NATO countries to decide how they would respond to the attack and he did not envisage any NATO role beyond existing plans to defend NATO member Turkey, which borders Syria.

"I have been presented with concrete information and, without going into details, I can tell you that personally I am convinced, not only that a chemical attack has taken place ..., but I am also convinced that the Syrian regime is responsible," Rasmussen told a news conference.

U.S. President Barack Obama has said he will seek congressional authorization for punitive action against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad after what Washington said was a sarin gas attack on August 21 that killed more than 1,400 people.

Rasmussen said there was "agreement that we need a firm international response in order to avoid that chemical attacks take place in the future. It would send, I would say, a dangerous signal to dictators all over the world if we stand idly by and don't react."

But Rasmussen said he saw no further role for NATO in the Syria crisis, beyond defending Turkey.

"If a response to what has happened in Syria were to be a military operation, I'd envisage a very short, measured, targeted operation, and you don't need the NATO command and control system to conduct such a short, measured, tailored, military operation," he said.

Yet another position here. Who is right? So far I am afraid only Putin is. And since France has the evidence, why not let France take care of it?

French intelligence: Syria's Assad behind chemical attack

Reuters

PARIS (Reuters) - Forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad carried out a "massive and coordinated" chemical attack in Damascus on August 21, according a French intelligence report shown to lawmakers on Monday, a government source said.

The nine-page document - drawn up by France's military and foreign intelligence services - listed five points that suggested Assad's fighters were behind the assault, the source told Reuters.

The dossier is central to President Francois Hollande's calls for Assad to be punished with military action for the reported chemical attack on areas controlled by Syrian rebels during their 2-1/2-year-old uprising.

Britain's parliament last week voted against taking part in any action against Syria and U.S. President Barack Obama, who also says he thinks Assad's forces were to blame, has decided to seek Congress approval before any assault.

"This (the attack) poses a major threat to national and global security," the French source said .

Satellite imagery showed strikes coming from government-controlled areas to the east and west of the Syrian capital and targeting rebel-held zones - areas that have since been bombed to wipe out evidence, the source added.

"Unlike previous attacks that used small amounts of chemicals and were aimed at terrorizing people, this attack was tactical and aimed at regaining territory," the source said.

Around 47 amateur video clips reportedly filmed on the morning of the attack and showing the impact on civilians had been authenticated by French military doctors, according to the intelligence.

Other French evidence gave details of other suspected chemical attacks, in the towns of Saraqib and Jobar in April, which now appeared to have killed about 280 people, the source said.

Other sources have previously told Reuters that the blood and urine samples used for the intelligence were taken after a Syrian government helicopter dropped munitions on April 29 at Saraqib, near the northern city of Idlib.

France had also been testing for sarin in samples of suspected chemical weapons smuggled out by reporters from the French daily Le Monde at Jobar, near central Damascus, in mid-April.

The source said the intelligence had confirmed those attacks took place.

President Assad Fires Back at the United States

Publicado el 02/09/2013 (ABC News)

More than half a million Syrian Americans living in the United States with family members in Syria.

______

NOTE: Among the comments on this video, one especially caught my eye. Written by one Rudolph Nemeth, it says this:

“Obama is the GREATEST president we've
ever had. Under him Osama was finally taken out, Gaddafi was overthrown, the Iraq war ended, the Afghan pull out began, and now with congressional approval Syrians will be free from that Iranian Mullah puppet Bashar Al-Assad..."

Beyond the impassioned reactions that president Obama's actions usually arouse, some in favor, others furiously against, there is undeniable truth in all of the allegations by this commenter. And if anything, Assad's condemnatory comments become laudatory if we take into account his criminal record.

So let's wait and see what ultimately comes out of all this. What if Obama suddenly becomes the hero in this end time's great epic movie and reveals himself as the world savior?
