Should apes have legal rights?

Chimps: Just like us?
The Week

View Gallery

The great apes can think, feel, and communicate. Does that mean they should have the same rights as people?

Where did this idea originate?
Twenty years ago, philosophers Peter Singer and Paola Cavalieri published The Great Ape Project, a book that called for chimpanzees, gorillas, bonobos, and orangutans to be accorded the same basic rights as human beings. Since then, a movement has taken root to urge governments and the United Nations to grant legal rights to chimpanzees and other great apes, banning their captivity in zoos and circuses and their use in medical testing for diseases like AIDS or hepatitis. New Zealand extended personhood rights to great apes in 1999, and Spain followed suit in 2008. The U.K., Sweden, Austria, Belgium, and the Netherlands have also banned research on apes for ethical reasons. While stopping short of a ban, the U.S. government announced this year it would limit funding for medical research to 50 chimpanzees. "I am confident that greatly reducing their use in biomedical research is scientifically sound and the right thing to do," said Francis S. Collins, director of the National Institutes of Health.

Why give rights to apes?
Activists say that it's now clear that our primate cousins have demonstrated that they have inner lives and relationships, can communicate, and experience emotions. Therefore, they say, we human beings should expand our "moral circle" to include the great apes and protect them from the deliberate infliction of suffering. Apes share up to 98.7 percent of their DNA with humans, notes primatologist Jane Goodall, who says that in a half century of observing chimps she saw many examples of compassion, altruism, calculation, communication, and even some form of conscious thought. "There is no sharp line dividing us from the chimpanzee or from any of the great apes," Goodall says.

Why do the advocates believe apes can think?
The primary evidence offered is the capacity of great apes to learn and use language. The female gorilla Koko, for instance, can make signs for about 1,000 words and understand around 2,000 spoken English words. Scientists at the Great Ape Trust near Des Moines claim that a pair of bonobos there uses language to build sentences, express empathy, and engage in gossip. In the wild, chimps have been observed to use gestures very similar to humans', such as pointing or raising their arms as a way of asking to be picked up. They've also been observed using tools.

Do they have feelings?
There's little doubt that they do. "They show emotions similar to those that we describe in ourselves as happiness, sadness, fear, despair," Goodall said. Chimpanzees become anxious and upset when they are taken away from their families; research also shows that apes feel anger and jealousy when other apes are fed more than they are. They seem capable, too, of recognizing feelings in other apes. When a chimp named Pansy was dying in Scotland in 2010, her family groomed and comforted her as she approached her end. After she died, her best friend Blossom sat by her lifeless body through the night. The other chimps in the enclosure refused to sleep where Patsy died for five days afterward.

What do the skeptics say?
They say that being similar to humans doesn't make apes the same as humans, and question whether sympathetic humans like Goodall are anthropomorphizing — projecting human traits on animals. Steve Jones, professor of genetics at the University of London, points out that even mice share 90 percent of our DNA. "Should they get 90 percent of human rights?" he said. "Where do you stop?" Humans have rights because we live under a moral code, said John D. Morris, an evolutionary creationist. Animals have no understanding of that code. "No ape has any awareness of right or wrong," he said. "If a loose chimp steals a picnic basket in the park, does he go to jail?" The skeptics also say that ending medical research on apes will delay or prevent effective vaccines and treatments and cost human lives. "If we are going to consider closing down AIDS and hepatitis research and giving human rights to chimps," said University of Florida animal psychologist Clive Wynne, "we had better be certain we are not just giving in to a natural but baseless anthropomorphic tendency without solid evidence to back us up."

How solid is the evidence?
It's virtually impossible to prove whether apes are conscious, since neuroscientists still can't agree on how to define consciousness, or how it arises in the human brain. But advocates for ape rights say the fundamental question is not scientific, but moral. We do know for certain that great apes have complex mental abilities, which elevate their capability for suffering. On that basis alone, say rights advocates, apes deserve basic protections from the pain, isolation, and arbitrary imprisonment inflicted by medical experiments or captivity in zoos. "Great apes are thinking, self-aware beings with rich emotional lives," said Peter Singer. "If we regard human rights as something possessed by all human beings, no matter how limited their intellectual or emotional capacities may be, how can we deny similar rights to great apes?"

When chimps retire
Now that the U.S. is retiring most of the chimpanzees it has used for medical testing, they're finally getting their first taste of freedom. The chimps are being moved to animal sanctuaries — most of them to the federally run Chimp Haven in Shreveport, La., which houses over 120 chimps in large social groups in 200 acres of parkland. Some of these chimps have never before been outdoors and are transformed. "A year later, you're not dealing with the same chimp who came here," said caregiver Diane LaBarbera. Earlier this year, 53-year-old Julius made the move after decades in a barren cage at the New Iberia Research Center, getting his first glimpse of the sky since he was captured in Africa as an infant. The freed chimps seem confused at first, then euphoric, said behaviorist Amy Fultz. "They light up. They look up at the sky. To me, they seem to be thinking, 'There's no bars.'"

Thousands rally to support embattled Tunisia government

TUNIS (Reuters) - Tens of thousands of Tunisians came out in a show of force for the country's Islamist-led government on Saturday, in one of the largest demonstrations since the 2011 revolution.

Supporters of the ruling Ennahda party crowded into Kasbah Square next to the prime minister's office in the capital, Tunis. Ennahda officials said more than 150,000 attended. Fireworks flashed overhead and red Tunisian flags fluttered over a sea of demonstrators.

"No to coups, yes to elections," the crowd shouted, in a reference to the army-backed ouster of Egypt's elected Islamist president last month.

The secular opposition is stepping up efforts to oust the transition government in the North African country. At the same time, security forces are struggling to fight off a spike in attacks by radical Islamist militants, whom the moderate Islamist Ennahda has condemned as terrorists.

The country, once considered a model among fledgling "Arab Spring" democracies, is facing its worst crisis since Tunisians toppled autocrat Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali and set off a wave of uprisings across the region.

The opposition, angered by the assassination of two of its figures and emboldened by the backlash against deposed Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi, has been protesting daily.

Across the capital, around 10,000 opposition protesters rallied against the government. They vowed a mass march on Sunday and an even bigger rally on Wednesday to mark the death of politician Chokri Belaid, who was gunned down six months ago.

'COUNTER-REVOLUTION WILL NOT SUCCEED'

Ennahda party chief Rachid Ghannouchi joined the throngs of demonstrators at the pro-government rally and gave a defiant speech to wild cheers from the crowd.

"Tunisia is a candle whose revolution lit up the world but now they (the opposition) want to put it out by trying to set off a coup," Ghannouchi said.

"The counter-revolution will not succeed."

Kasbah Square was the site of major rallies in the days after Ben Ali was toppled in which demonstrators demanded a transitional Constituent Assembly to draft a new constitution.

That assembly - which the opposition is demanding be dissolved - is eight months late delivering the draft but says it is only weeks away from finishing the job.

Earlier on Saturday, Prime Minister Ali Larayedh appealed to demonstrators on both sides for calm.

"Tunisia is in need of national unity. ... I call for calm so the army and security forces can combat terrorism and not waste efforts on protests," Larayedh told a news conference.

Tunisian forces launched air and artillery strikes on Friday to try to rout militants who killed eight soldiers this week in one of the deadliest attacks on security forces in decades.

Over the past week, a roadside explosive device and a car bomb targeted security forces in Tunis, the first such attacks to hit the capital. No one was hurt.

The Interior Ministry said on Saturday that security forces foiled a plot a day earlier to assassinate a prominent politician in the coastal town of Sousse, a week after assailants killed leftist politician Mohamed Brahmi in Tunis.

The ministry said two "dangerous terrorists" were arrested for suspected involvement in the attempt. A third was still on the run after trading machine-gun fire with security forces.

'CRYING FOR MY COUNTRY'

At the opposition protests, demonstrators shouted, "After the bloodshed, the Ennahda gang has lost its legitimacy."

Ordinary Tunisians who say the economy and security situation is deteriorating and the government has not done enough have joined in daily protests this week led by the secular opposition.

The opposition insists their demands for the government's downfall are legitimate because they reflect what the people want.

But in Kasbah Square, demonstrators invigorated by the largest protest this week say they are still the majority.

"Look at the popular will, its right here now," said Adel Munir, an unemployed 28-year-old. "Yes there are a lot of problems but we had an election. This is democracy."

Planned talks on the political and security crisis on Saturday failed to produce results, as the main opposition groups declined to attend.

Instead, both sides have held their ground: Ennahda refuses to remove the prime minister and calls the Constituent Assembly a "red line." The opposition says both the assembly and the government must be dissolved.

"I'm crying for my country," said Seif Benomar, a bank employee who attended the opposition rally but said he felt disillusioned by the ongoing street protests.

"Will this show of force help those who are out of work and will it stop the rise in prices? This is serving the interests of politicians and the people are just the fuel."

The Galactic Federation of Light via Blossom Goodchild: August 3, 2013

Blossom Goodchild newThe Galactic Federation of Light channeled by Blossom Goodchild, August 3, 2013 – http://www.blossomgoodchild.com/index.html?page=BG186aug3.html

Blossom: Good morning. I think I was a little too ‘sickly’ when I tried the other day. My flu has now flown. Is all well now?

Galactic Federation of Light: We very much appreciate your keenness and yes we would say we are in full throttle and ready to chat with you.

That’s great. I have a question that I would like to ask on behalf of many who have written in and that is … ‘How can one be in JOY as we have been asked to do … if they are suffering great pain … be it physically or emotionally?’ I am blessed in that I suffer neither these days, yet many do and when one is in continual pain or depressed … it is not AT ALL easy to BE IN JOY. Can you offer some wisdom to those who FEEL this way?

Let us first of all state that one’s life path is an individual one. That which is ‘bestowed’ upon a physicality is through choice for the benefit of self.

Let’s dive straight on in here … ‘Bestowed’? I would imagine that will offend many who are suffering … It is hardly a blessing!

And yet we would disagree. For all that is ‘given’ to the soul is an opportunity no matter what form it takes. One will find it difficult to understand that they have ‘asked’ for a particular disease or that they have ‘asked’ to suffer for many many years with an ongoing ailment. Yet we say to you this is so. There are many reasons for this … which of course will be according to the soul’s journey and its needs.

Here also we would like to talk about karma. One tends to think that if they have a debilitating illness maybe it is due to something they have done in a past life and that they are paying their debts.

This is not the way we would put it. There are no debts to pay.

What … even with murderers etc? … People who have committed great crimes?

This is correct. It is not ‘another’ that judges ones behaviour at any given moment and decides what ‘punishment’ one should have. It is not like that at all. It is the individual soul who decides its pathway and what will serve its soul in any given life time.

If perhaps one was to maim another in a previous position … then they do not get ‘punished’ by being maimed by another in a future life time. That soul may well CHOOSE to be maimed by another … in order to experience that which they put on another … and in that way they are repenting for what they may have done … yet they are not paying a debt. It does not work like that.

So what would be the benefits of deciding to be really ill for most of a given life time? … What gain is to be had when it is so hard in that situation to be of JOY?

It would depend on each individual circumstance as we have stated. There are many many reasons why this would take place. If it is from a learning curve point of view then the soul … although not understanding ‘why’ in the present situation … would perhaps have chosen that for the soul’s growth. It was a hard yet necessary situation to undertake and Truly only fully understood when out of the experience. If the soul knew WHY it had such an ailment it would not gain all that was possible through it.

I know quite a few ‘Enlightened Beings’ that have had such a hard time with the physical body … really painful times … when they cannot get out of bed most days … year after year. HOW can they be of JOY as you ask?

We DO understand what you are trying to put across. Yet we are concerned a little that it may not be understood what we are trying to put across to you. For we are coming from an entirely different perspective. We ask those who are suffering to KNOW that what we say comes ONLY THROUGH LOVE for you … even though you may not accept it.

JOY does not come from any physicality. It is not physical. JOY comes from within the heart place.

And?

And if it is that one has ‘chosen’ to experience pain in its different forms … who is to say that it is not the challenge asked for … to find the JOY of life … even amongst all the hardship?

May be one chose it to be a shining example to others. May be one chose it to assist another in their understanding in patience. Maybe the illness was entirely ‘sacrificial’ … in that one ‘offered’ to undergo such pain in order to serve another.

Would one do that you ask? Of course … You would be surprised at the extreme lengths a soul will go to in order to benefit the whole.

Yet I am sure many would say ‘You try! You try finding JOY when every day you have to get through this constant pain’.

And with respect … with ALL respect … we would say ‘No … you try! For it is you that has asked for it’.

The issue we believe … for the soul in such a position of that which you speak … would be arguing our words as they read them. Yet we ask you to TRUST that what we offer in wisdom is from our TRUTH.

IT IS YOUR ATTITUDE TOWARDS ANYTHING THAT MAKES A DIFFERENCE.

YOUR ATTITUDE TOWARDS ANYTHING THAT MAKES YOU WHO YOU ARE.

Yes … there are those that choose to suffer day after day and their pain is great and they moan and moan and moan. There are those that choose to suffer and their pain is greater … yet they offer ONLY LOVE to others and will always find a smile. Which of these is an example of LOVE? Which leaves ‘hope in hearts’?

I do see what you are saying … but I must keep going here for clarity. I have had quite a few times in my life’s experience when I have been pretty sick and ‘my life force’ has almost left me. I had not the strength to ‘BE OF JOY’ … and certainly at times when in pain for a long time … there was no JOY in me to be mustered. The pain takes over … where is the JOY in that?

There is none.

I rest my case.

Yet … there is HOPE! Here again we focus on one’s attitude. We would be as bold to say also that:

ONES’ ATTITUDE IS THE GREATEST HEALER!

If one … no matter what … focuses on the best outcome … ALWAYS … then without question the best outcome will derive from that focus.

IT MAY NOT BE THE BEST OUTCOME THAT ONE EXPECTED … Yet it will be the best outcome for the benefit of the soul

These words may be difficult to absorb for many … yet they are of TRUTH.

THE JOY CAN COME FROM THE ATTITUDE.

One can be in great pain … yet find a joke or two. One can focus on a life without the pain … even when ‘tortured’ by it in each moment … Or one can focus on the pain and how it is destroying their lives and wondering if there is any practical point in continuing on.

Friends … we ask you to take these words into the depth of your hearts.

YOU KNEW BEFORE YOU CAME OF THAT WHICH WILL SERVE YOU.

Therefore … may we offer another perspective? If you KNEW that the illness and pain you have was chosen by you to allow you to be a better soul … then BE OF JOY about that. Be JOYFUL that you are serving your souls desire in this way.

The soul gains so much insight through having to experience the opposite of JOY. Yet there is a peaceful understanding that can enter the spirit self when there is no judgment of self.

Many may ask ‘Why me. Why should I deserve such misery?’ We would say ‘No-one deserves misery.’ Yet many may adopt the thought pattern that they must have done something terribly wrong in another life time to have to suffer the way they are in this one.

LET GO OF ANY THOUGHTS OF GUILT AND UNWORTHINNESS.

THESE THOUGHTS ARE CREATED BY THE SELF AND HAVE NO PLACE ANYWHERE!!!

There are those also who FEEL that due to their pain/illness etc. they may not be here on the planet to witness ‘THE EVENT’ that you speak of and this saddens them greatly because they FEEL ‘What was the point of their lives if it was wracked with pain and then they had to leave the physical before experiencing the glory of what has been keeping them going … THE EVENT ‘… if you see what I am saying?

We do.

KNOW THIS. Not one soul leaves this planet accidently.

White Cloud has spoken of this and although I can accept it … I find it hard to fathom.

Each soul KNOWS when they are to be born and when they are to depart from the Earthly experience.

What about suicides?

That is another matter.

Is it too delicate a one to discuss? As it contradicts what you have just said about ‘not one soul leaving accidently.’

A soul who chooses to take their life is not committing a crime. Let us make that perfectly clear. For there are indoctrinations in your world that would disagree.

One who is so disturbed and saddened by ‘life’ that they FEEL the burning desire to leave … does so out of desperation. Do you think those enlightened ones on the other side of the veil would ‘shoo them away’ … ‘push them aside’ … when more than ever they are needing Love and consolation? Of course not.

Some rules in your world have such far reaching ‘side effects’ that are totally unnecessary.

If one was to question such things and come from a place within … these matters would immediately present a TRUTH that would MAKE SENCE … coming from Love. A lot of rules which one automatically accepts because they are taught not to question … make absolutely no sense at all … and yet so many ‘blindly’ accept them as fact.

There is also the possibility that a soul may have taken their own life by agreement to assist another … who is left behind … in their growth.

So much … so much dear friends cannot be understood … because there is so much to understand!! And definitely from ones Earthly perspective … one can become so lost in the ‘but what if this ’ or ‘how come that’.

Blossom you can feel as we send these words through to you that there are volumes more about each subject we speak … yet it simply is not possible to grasp it all and put it into words. Is this not so?

Yes … and this is where I guess … I have this KNOWING that you speak of. I do not KNOW everything that YOU KNOW on a certain matter … yet I KNOW I KNOW it all on another level of myself … if that makes sense. I fully accept these days that being in this Earthly body restricts so much of our knowledge and yet I FULLY EXPECT that as we move on up the scale … more and more of this KNOWING will be brought to the conscious level … instead of where it is now … in the unconscious.

These are wise words.

Wax on … wax off.

So we shall end this communication today with reiterating our intention of today’s subject matter.

Those of you who are in the situation of that which we have spoken of … will either become very angry at these words … or you will recognise them within your heart place and accept them and find the JOY within your quest .

For those who are angry … there will come a time when the anger shall subside and JOY shall replace it through ones attitude … if one so chooses.

Glad I am just the messenger here! I know it is time to go … but could we just clarify about ‘those concerned about leaving before THE EVENT is upon us?’

Indeed. Those who agreed to be here for THE EVENT will be here. Those who agreed to conduct their energy of THE EVENT from elsewhere … shall be doing that.

KNOW OF THIS.

Each one of you whether in the physical body or not … shall be exactly where they are meant to be … and wherever that is … NOT ONE SOUL SHALL MISS IT … OR INDEED MISS OUT.

Many thanks guys. We all appreciate your time and wisdom! In Love and thanks as always.

Ditto. Until next time … please make sure you make time to FEEL OUR LOVE FOR YOU.

Heavenletter #4636 In Every Atom

Ocean 22A good statement of the case that God is everything.

Heavenletter #4636 In Every Atom, August 4, 2013

http://heavenletters.org/in-every-atom.html

God said:

Although I am silent, I am never speechless. I speak in a language deeper than words. I speak in a universal language. I speak in the boom-ta-boom that underlies all language. It is a soundless sound that vibrates. I created Creation with sound, and I maintain what I have created with sound. Even a molecule sounds. Bells are not the only instrument that peals. All the extant in the world is a sounded vibration. A vibration has a beat. A beat moves. It repeats itself. It echoes itself.

It is said that I, God, cannot be seen. You see replicas of Me all the time.

When you see the Ocean, what are you seeing?

When you see the desert, what are you seeing?

When you see a glass of water, what are you seeing?

When you see a grain of sand, what are you seeing?

When you see a smile, what are you seeing?

When you see a child, what are you seeing?

And when you look into someone’s eyes, what are you seeing?

You are seeing evidence of Me.

When you feel the sun on your back, what are you feeling?

And when you feel the wind on your back, what are you feeling?

And when you feel good, what are you feeling?

When you feel love, what are you feeling?

If I am Everywhere within Everything and Everyone — where am I not?

When you are having a good laugh in good company, with Whom are you enjoying?

When you jog, with Whom are you jogging?

Now, you, for I know you very well, may ask:

“Hey, God, when I am in bad company, with Whom am I?”

I say: “You are with Me. You are never without Me. Never ever. Even when you are afraid, I am with you. When you feel alone, I am with you. When you feel miserable, I am with you. For Heaven’s sakes, I am internal to you. In every atom, I AM. In every cell of yours, I AM. In every bite of food you eat, I AM. I am your innermost being. We share Being. That means We ARE. You ARE. You and I ARE. There is no you and I. There is I. We are One. I am called A Supreme Being. You are not called a Supreme Being, and, yet, when We ARE One, what can you be?”

Okay, I suppose you can be called a less than conscious Supreme Being. It is not that you have not attained the heights. It is that you don’t see the height at which you stand. Human error, beloveds. You don’t have to err. It is not true that it is human to err. True, human beings have fooled themselves. They have fooled themselves that they cannot see. And, yet, perhaps not seeing is not even an error because not seeing contains the possibility of seeing. You are on your way to seeing, to cognition, to Self-Realization. You spot where you are and Who you are.

It is not that the lights go on. The lights have always been on. It’s just that you have been blind to the bright light that you are. You, Who has always been in the Light, don’t see it because the idea of such Light is too dazzling for you.

It is as if you had been presented with, let’s say, a hundred billion trillion dollars. You couldn’t see it cuz your mind couldn’t accommodate all that wealth. It is like your not being able to see your car keys right in front of you. The difference is you know you have car keys.

About your Brilliance, about Reality, about Infinity and Eternity, you couldn’t grasp, or, rather, you couldn’t hold on to the idea. Whatever ideas you have had about yourself, they are not enough.
