Haiti Continues to Face Many Difficulties

January 15, 2010

Email Received this morning from Ebed Paul, mission administrator:

Hello everyone,

As you are all very much aware Haiti is in serious crisis. It iscritical for us to take immediate action. This email will be short andto the point. We are making preparations to send food, water, andmedical to Port au Prince. I am in Haiti right now working on earthemergency relief. We have made good contacts and friends high up inthe UN (They lost many colleagues). We met with the UN today in CapHaitian to arrange for an escort to Port au Prince. We were informedthat they have been working on emergency relief and security for theflooding right here in Cap Haitian just outside the airport. Therefore,we are making other arrangements to get the relief to Port au Prince assoon as possible.

How can you help?

  1. Reply to EWI (info@ewi-interknit.org) with a pledge amount which will enable us to inform MENH how much supplies they will be able to order.
  2. Make check donations payable to: East West Interknit and write'Haiti relief' on the memo line. The mailing address is PO Box270333, St. Paul, MN 55127. You may also go to contribute on this siteand click on 'donate' to use your credit card. Donations sent by checkwill arrive more quickly that funds donated by credit card.
  3. EWI commits to sending 100% of relief money to Haiti.

Ebed also asks that you send this information to all your contacts and then added, Pray! Pray! Pray!

Being in Haiti, seeing the Haitian people in this criticalsituation breaks my heart. We need to respond as soon as possible. Please share this information with as many people as possible.

The Canadian federal government has agreed to match personal donations to approved charities, which includes M.C.C. and World Vision.

David,

Since you are posting on my forum, I am going to be asking that people give to organizations they have thouroughly checked out. It sounds like you have a real desire to help the people of Haiti, and I applaud you for that. However, I don't know you, & I don't know the organization you are recommending.

Everyone should check out for themselves anyone or organization they give their money to. Especially in times of disaster, there are all sorts of folks who pop up and say "donate your money for them these victims, send your money here," and then the money never arrives where it was intended. We all know there are scammers out there just looking for every opportunity to take advantage of people. I'm not saying you are doing this, but I am asking that everyone who comes here and reads your post to verify what you are saying.

I'm suggesting several other choices below. All are great organizations and are financially responsible and accountable to boards and financial accountability groups.

In no certain order, my choices are:

Feed the Children.org

Red Cross.org (you can select donations to go where you want them to)

Life Today.org (Life Outreach International P.O. Box 982000 Fort Worth, TX 76182, 1-800-947-LIFE)

Samaritan's Purse (Ministry of Franklin Graham)

Thanks for suggesting that people give. It's a definite need and the main thing is to take action.

My prayers go out to the people of Haiti, both victims and workers there among the devastation.

Blessings to you for bringing this topic to my forum. I thought about doing that but you beat me to it.

I appreciate your comment.

Sure. M.C.C. is Mennonite Central Committee, a charity a world wide relief charity with coverage to developing and third world countries. It responds to local and over seas disasters. M.C.C. has had workers in Haiti for many years as have many other reputable charities. Where M.C.C. differs from, say World Vision and Red Cross, is that it's volunteer base is mainly of Mennonite ethnicity and 100% of the donation goes to victims and no administration costs are extracted. You may wish an explanation of Mennonite from me here but I would rather you Google it for the source although I could give you more than you could or wish to see. In U.S. and Canada you will see M.C.C. fund raisers auctions that raise literally hundreds of thousands if not millions of dollars for relief and disasters. Get to one in a town near you this summer or fall and enjoy ethnic foods and bid on a quilt.
