ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS NOT TO BE ALONE
12/14/2005 1:48:56 PM
Hello my friends, Someone here at Adland asked me to post this,So here it is, thanks, kathy martin “All I want for Christmas is not to be alone” With Christmas crawling up closely many of us singletons have to deal with the horror of having no one special to buy that special gift for. We have to sit there and listen to the, “I don’t know what I want to get for my boyfriend”, or “I hope my boyfriend will get me that ring I want”, or perhaps the worst, “I’m going to propose to her on New Year’s Eve”. Then you sit there trying to have that happy smile going so that they can’t see how bitter and uninspired you really are. So how do single girls and boys spend their holidays? Being single and 20 is much different from being single and almost 30 during the holidays. When you’re 20 chances are that most of your buddies are still single too which means that you all could hang out together. When you’re almost 30 most of your friends are already paired up in a very serious relationship, and would spend their holidays introducing their significant other to their families. See the problem yet? Then of course you would think that you would always have your parents as back up plans, but then you realize that they haven’t done the family Christmas thing since you moved out and have since found refuge at a cheesy Christmas party. You could join them, but then you’d have to sit through the torture of having your parent’s friends asking you, “So are you seeing anyone?” Where is the humanity in the holidays? As you get closer to Christmas you start to run around and look for any opportunities that can occupy that day. As if the day itself isn’t already lonely enough, but all the shops and venues are closed and the only thing on TV are those sappy Christmas movies where two love birds kiss for the first time under the mistletoe. So then you think to yourself, “God is it going to be me and Fluffy this year?” You’re ears start to perk up listening in on your co-workers conversation of a possible Holiday party open to all, then you butt into their conversation by saying, “Oh what are you doing for Christmas? I’m looking to spend time with some nice friends.” Then hope to god that they will throw an invitation your way. The whole month of December then becomes just one big scramble for something to do during Christmas. One solution for the holiday blues is volunteering. Volunteering is a win win situation for all. First of all you’ll have something to do on the loneliest day of the year for those alone, secondly you’ll have tons of people around you who will be glad that you’re there, and third, of all you get to bring a little humanity to those in need. Some great places to spend your Christmas are at the children’s hospital, homeless shelters, and convalescent homes. In all those places you’ll find that many of the people are feeling lonely just like you, and would love any compassion anyone could offer them. Christmas isn’t about presents and eggnogs, but it’s a day of reaching out. Even if you have someone to spend Christmas with it’s still a good idea to visit those in need. Isn’t helping those in need the true meaning of Christmas? The Holiday’s is a time for family and friends, but if you’re in a situation where they’re not available, then you have to find other ways to spend that day. This is the time of year to appreciate all we have, not to sulk about all that we don’t have. There are people all around us. We just have to open our eyes to see that there are opportunities to make new friends for Christmas.
