Tip: How to Create an Effective Sig File
11/28/2005 1:52:27 AM
Hi: Have you ever noticed the number of people that have www.parentcompany.com/?affiliateid in their signature file? Let's be honest - those don't really get clicked on very much, do they? Nope. So, here's some tips. 1) First of all, pretend you're paying for a classified ad, and ALL you get to run is one line. That's it. ONE. You'd want that one line to be VERY effective, yes? Think of things that would make people curious, or address something that's very important to them. I usually start writing ideas on paper. Good old brainstorming. Write about 50 of them. More if you can. As you get going, you'll find yourself taking a previous line, and changing one word, or re-arranging words. 2) Now, let's make it an html link. On your keyboard, you'll see html "arrows" - they look like this < > On most computers, they are above the period and comma. In this example, I'm going to use square brackets so you can see the code, instead of just the link. Where you see square brackets, substitute the pointy ones. Okay? Here's what a link looks like. [a href=""] Your Line Here [/a] Put your "one liner" where it says 'your line here' -- then put your website url in between the quotation marks. The code would look like this; [a href="http://www.lindacaroll.com/why-websites-fail.html"] Find Out Why Websites Fail [/a] What people will SEE is this; Find Out Why Websites Fail Create a few of them and save them in a notepad so you can test them. 3) Go into your Adland profile. Click the "next" button until you get to the part where you can change your signature file. Paste your "code" in. Save it. Then go back and look at any of your posts to see if it looks right. If you need to change it, go back into your profile to do that. Why create an interesting sig file? You want to make profit, yes? You can't do that if no one goes to your website. An interesting link gets more clicks than an uninteresting one. Thus, a good signature file can increate your visits, which can increase your profits. : ) Linda P.S. Trying to pick the best line? Post some of your ideas here. We'll help! Don't forget to tell us what you sell, too. ie; Post something like "I sell widgets, and these are the sig-lines I'm trying to choose from...

Hi Linda, Great post again sig files can be a good passive way to approch friends and family with out have to give the sale pitch. Keep up the good work. Very impressed with your portfolio! Have a great day, Johnny Ps. I would like to here your thoughts on out-sourcing of web design. It seems that when people hire a web designer now days the look for people overseas to do the work. It is done for a fraction of what US designers charge. Ther are some good designers in places like India and Russia and let face it where need to make Up to 15 pages: $2500 usd they will do it $400.00 simple because 600.00 a year is a lot of money to them. I am not suggesting people needing design work done to go this route. But it would make for an interesting forum. As you said this more to it than lay out of a page.

Hello Linda, God is "really gonna bless yer socks off" for this post! I just finished re-working my sig file with my church website address, and I love how it turned out. One question though: Is there a limit to how many items can be added? your friend forever,
