Hello Kay I have seen very few parents that were as aware of things they needed to do to help their child as you do. You too have done your research and under the circumstances, you are doing a wonderful job with your son. If every child had a mother that was as loving and understanding as you are, this world would be a much better place. Thank you Kay for sharring your information and most importantly, your message of hope. Hello Kay The following is an article that I thought you might find helpful. I'm sure you know about the limited number of places you can go to and recieve the kind of care needed to help with Autism. Well, fortunately, some people are trying to do something to change that. UW joins new Autism Treatment Network to provide better medical service CONTACT: Joel Schwarz joels@u.washington.edu 206-543-2580 Parents who have children with autism often have no place to turn to when it comes to finding quality treatment for this often still mysterious developmental disability which is accompanied by a wide variety of medical problems. That is why six leading medical institutions, including the Autism Center at the University of Washington, today are joining forces with physicians and parents to form the nonprofit Autism Treatment Network. Major goals of the network are to develop standards of treatment for people who have autism and to build a national autism database, said Geraldine Dawson, director of the UW's Autism Center. The database will collect information on the range of medical conditions from which people with autism suffer and those treatments that have been tested and have been found to be effective. In addition to the UW Autism Center, other medical institutions joining the Autism Treatment Network are Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, and the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, as well as individual physicians at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, Ore., and Columbia University Medical Center in New York. Other partners in the network include the Northwest Autism Foundation and the Cure Autism Now Foundation, a leading funder of autism research. "There are hundreds of thousands of children and families in the United States struggling with autism," said Seattle businessman Richard Fade, a co-founder of the Autism Treatment Network. "They face a tremendous challenge. This is especially true with regard to medical issues and access to treatment. There are still large gaps in our overall understanding of the disorder." Dawson said the Autism Treatment Network is being modeled after the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and the Children's Cancer Network, which have spurred dramatic gains in medical science's ability to treat those conditions. "All too often when parents are reeling from getting a diagnosis of autism, they are put in a position of making decisions about treatment with few physicians or centers that can guide them," she said. "And later on because many physicians focus on autism solely as a communications and behavior disorder, they fail to recognize medical conditions that are associated with autism. Many children with autism are nonverbal and have trouble expressing themselves, so they have difficulty explaining their symptoms." Dawson noted that gastrointestinal problems, sleep disorders and food allergies are among the medical conditions which may be prevalent in children with autism. According to parents some are being treated successfully for these issues. However, no organization of medical institutions has undertaken careful study and committed to establishing treatment guidelines for care. Making front-line physicians aware of such information and proven treatments is a primary goal of the new network, and at the UW Autism Center this effort has been given a boost with a $1 million donation by Fade and his wife. This gift will be used to create a fellowship for training young physicians to go out into the community and treat autism. The Fades, who have a family member with autism, made a $5 million donation in 2000 to help found the UW Autism Center. Autism is the most common developmental disability in the United States, affecting more youngsters than childhood leukemia, diabetes and cancer combined. It affects about one in 166 children according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Autism is a spectrum of developmental disorders that interfere with a child's ability to communicate or relate socially with other people. Those afflicted have a restricted range of activities and interests. Some are high functioning, but many children with autism have some form of mental retardation. "For other developmental disorder, such as Down syndrome, physicians are alerted to the kinds of medical conditions that these children suffer and have guidelines for treating them, but there is nothing like this yet for autism," said Dawson. "Historically, creation of the Autism Treatment Network will be a very important development in the way we view and provide treatment for children with autism." ### For more information, contact Dawson at (206) 543-1051 or dawson@u.washington.edu or Fade at (425) 503- 8660. Hello Kay ANd Friends I just received an invitation to join a forum about a line of healthy, natural products that are showing a lot of promise. The invitation came from a lady named Philena. She has an 8 yr. old daughter with Autism and says that using these products has helped her daughter improve. Here is what she had to say My 10 year old son has PDD-NOS, which stands for Pervasive Development Disorder, Not Otherwise Specified. It is a form of Autism. It is considered a "mild" case, if such a thing exists. I want to share with you what has worked for our family, so you can pass on this information. Sadly, Autism is far too common... 1. GET RID OF ALL TOXINS IN THE HOME. I cannot stress how important this is. Convert your home to Melaleuca products. These kids have a very low tolerance to chemicals and it affects their behavior. AND, their actions are not predictable. Getting rid of poisonous household products will reduce stress in the home. 2. Take full doses of Vita Bears. My son is 10; weighs 100 lbs and we give him 4 Vita Bears every morning. It's not always easy. He doesn't always want to take them. 3. Take 3-4 capsules of Provex Plus. There has been a huge language spurt since we've started him on Provex Plus. It has also allowed us to take him off Claritin, as he no longer suffers from seasonal allergies. He is calmer, more alert and much healthier. 4. Use Pain-A-Trate at bedtime. This not only calms him, but it helps him breath easier. I apply it on his chest, or on his legs, and sometimes his feet. He loves it! 5. Spray bedding/pillow everyday with diluted Sol-U-Mel. This will kill dust mites, mold, mildew and other hidden germs that can "fog" their brain. Parents with autisic children are looking for answers. If you know of someone with an autisic child, please talk to them and introduce them to Melaleuca. They will thank you. I promise you that. These simple, inexpensive changes have made all the difference for our family. Pass this on! So far so good.. I've been following this to the letter, and Namina is doing better. She still non-verbal, but she's 8yrs now and stop throwing so many tantrums. Here's the my product store & other testimonies. http://momswin.com/productCatalogs/index.cfm?catID=4 and my sites http://www.momswin.com/philena http://www.choicehorizons.com/philena Now, what I really hate about families with autistic children, is since Melaleuca pays us residual income for referrals to their safer products. But that's not the reason I joined. When I got presented this opportunity, I wasn't thinking about the business or the money, all that came to mind was my daughter, and how I didn't have to worry about her swallowing too much toothpaste anymore because of the chemicals. Right now, I hope many of you take advantage of this risk-free opportunity to try Melaleuca's products. From now to Nov. 30. The membership fee is waived from $29 to $1. So for $1 I can open a temporary account for anyone interested in making a 35pt order for this month. That's about $40-50 depending on what you need in your home. You may also visit their website at http://www.melaleuca.com They also have their own testimonies. But you have 90 days for the vitamins and 120 days for the products, if they don't improve the symptoms of autism, allergies, diabetes, liver diseases, asthma, or whatever ailments you and your family may have, you can return everything for a refund. I see so many people here asking for help, and I'm in a few autism groups in MSN as well. We all have the same questions and concerns about our children. This is what is working for me so far. If for some reason it's stops working for me & family, I'll stop using it! I don't care how much Melaleuca pays me, if it didn't work, screw em. Hello Kay I may have a little good news. Some people have gotten together and created a new online support group for those who have a child or a loved one with a ASD. It goes beyond the clinical approach and allows people to share personal experience and knowledge. I hope you find this information helpful. Home About Us Autism & ASD Message Boards Hyperlexia Fragile X Autism Directory News Archive Contact Us Information - News - Resources - Message Boards - Support Welcome to AutismKey.com! Autism Key is a site run by parents and for parents of children with autism & autism spectrum disorders. Through first hand experience, we've learned that the most difficult part of receiving an autism diagnosis is the lack of support and readily available information. This site was created as a resource tool for parents and loved ones to encourage, support, and learn from one another's challenges. Additionally, our Message Boards will allow you to share valuable information about different forms of treatment, physicians, specific disorders, and overall experiences. Receiving a diagnosis of ASD can be devastating. However, one doesn't have to go through it alone. Together, along with the medical community, we can support each other and help unlock the mystery behind these disorders. Thanks for visiting! Gary G. Re: Autism. A most misunderstood illness of children

Hello Kay Lately I have taken a special interest in learning about Autism. I have been reading everything I get my hands on and I am now convinced that the cause for at least some cases of Autism is known. It is know by the governments around the world in countries where the occurence of Autism is prevalent. It is known by the pharmacuetical companies that make vaccines. It is known by the scientists who have studied it and it is known by many of the parents of children who suffer with this terrible affliction. Thimerasol, the lead based compound that is used in vaccines is a causitive factor if not the lone culprit in many cases. Study after study has shown this to be the case. The following research report is another example of the growing body of evidence that this is true. After posting this report, I am also going to post two different readers comments about this issue. You will notice the complete lack of scientific evidence with the ones who claim there is no connection between Autism and vaccinations. Then notice the amount of solid evidence in the case of the parent who is actually making progress with the use of heavy metal chealation therapy for her child. Viewpoint: Autism on the rise because of vaccines By MELISSA R. TROUTMAN As a mother of four wonderful blessings from God, and the last being diagnosed as having “regressive autism,” I am truly amazed at how, and I quote, “our parents, schools and the medical community” have been apparently such a insensitive society in the past to not spotting autism sooner in life. In the article “Special ed enrollment grew by more than a third over decade” by Ken Kusmer, an Associated Press writer, on Nov. 17 stated that Richard Burden (executive director of the Indiana Resource Center for Families with Special Needs) had said “the growing number of students identified as autistic may be attributable to a more sensitive society — including parents, schools and the medical community — spotting the disability sooner in life.” By this statement, Mr. Burden seems to imply that we all were/are dense, even the school professionals/psychologists and those in the medical arena as well. He is correct in stating “that’s a national phenomenon” referring to the national increase in autism cases, but it is not attributable to being a now “sensitive society.” Not only has an increase in autism been on the rise in Indiana, but nationally as well. Looking back, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices at the CDC changed the protocol for vaccinations (increasing the amount and frequency to a total of 32 vaccinations on their childhood immunization schedule by the time the child is 2 years old) approximately 10 years ago. Along with the change in protocol in quantity and frequency of these vaccinations was the introduction to the mercury-laden preservative Thirmerosal. Coincidence? I don’t think so. As a parent of a mercury-induced autistic child, I find these type of blatant denials of what truly is causing the epidemic of autism, PDD-NOS, ADD, and ADHD a travesty. I must agree with Pat Sullivan, author of “Wellness Piece by Piece,” who poses the question from his Internet blog: ”If there is 1.5 million with autism today, then show me the millions of adults who have autistic traits who were simply missed and NOT labeled autistic! Where are they? Do you know any? If you have ever been around a child or an adult with autism, it would be IMPOSSIBLE to miss. The symptoms are NOT subtle!!” How true this is. I knew when my son was around the age of 15 to 16 months that something was wrong. By Mr. Burden’s opinion I am just a member of a now “sensitive society”! Is it a coincidence that California, the state with the best methods of tracking cases of autism, and which recently outlaw Thirmerosal in vaccines has, over the past two years seen the first reversal in the trend of the autism epidemic? Indiana now is noted for the same as well. This will continue to be true, but the government agencies and the pharmaceutical companies will be the ones with the most to lose with this trend and occurrence. That’s why there are presently 10 different bills on Capitol Hill — S3, S975, S1437, S1828, S1873, S1880, HR650, HR3154, HR3970, HR4245 — that contain provisions which will let drug companies off the hook for injuries resulting from vaccines and other products. Please, please, stop this insanity. Stop the denial. The research is there, the studies are available, but the government and the pharmaceutical companies do not want that to be known. They have the most to lose. It’s all about the money. Mercury is a neurotoxin, and autism, PDD-NOS, ADD and ADHD are all neurological disorders. Therefore, it is absolutely obvious the correlation between the two. Is this a more sensitive society? No, it’s the result of corrupt big businesses wanting to make more money at the expense of our little defenseless babies whose parents have made the most costly mistake: Trusting the FDA, CDC and the pharmaceutical companies, and believing they were doing the right thing by getting their babies vaccinated with this poison and their protocol.
