Children can be diagnosed as early as 6 months old, but normally autism is detected closer to 18 months of age.

One in 166 kids born today will have autism, but some autistic children don't show signs as a baby. Many times, the child is 2 or even older before signs of the disorder are noticeable.

Little Trevor Schwarzkopf loves to swing just like any other 4-year-old. But Trevor isn't like every other little boy. He has autism.

"Trevor couldn't hold his own head up until he was 10 months old," his mother, Lin, said.

Just months after Trevor was born, his mother knew something was wrong -- she saw the signs early.

Trevor Schwarzkopf and David McCormac have both been diagnosed with autism.

"The children just don't seem to be developing normally," Autism researcher Dr. Jennifer Elder, of University of Florida in Gainesville, said.

Elder says the younger the child, the harder the diagnosis. Early warning signs include if your 1-year-old doesn't babble or coo. And if they don't gesture by then, that's also sign. Children should say single words by 16 months and two-word phases by 24 months.

"There is another group that starts to develop normally and for some reason its like the light switch is turned off," Elder said.

That's what happened to 13-year-old David McCormac. He was 3 when his parents noticed something wrong.

"I noticed him saying certain words, and then he wouldn't say them anymore," his mother, Virginia, said.

Loss of language is one of the primary warning signs of autism. More red flags: If the child doesn't respond to their name and can't explain what they want.

"Rather than asking the parent for something, will take the parent's hand and use it like a tool to get something," Elder said.

Other signs: If your child can't follow directions, if they walk on their toes, avoid eye contact, and don't smile when smiled at.

"Go with your gut feeling," Elder said. "If they feel like something is wrong, get the help."

Hello Everyone

As if life weren't tough enough for the families of those who suffer with autism, now we have something else to watch out for. Here is an update from  The National Autism Association about children with autism, the FDA and anti psychotic drugs.  Please spread this message around so that we can help others avoid this problem.

PRESS RELEASE

FDA Approves Anti-Psychotic Drug Risperidone for Use in Children Diagnosed with Autism
National Autism Association urges parents and health care providers to carefully research side effects

Nixa, MO - The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the anti-psychotic drug Risperidone (trade name Risperdal) earlier this month for use among children diagnosed with autism, much to the concern of parents familiar with the drug’s side effect profile. Manufactured by Johnson & Johnson subsidiary Janssen, Risperdal sales figures were over $3 billion in 2005. The FDA has approved the drug for pediatric use despite the fact that the agency issued a warning letter to Janssen in 2004 saying that the company had omitted information in product literature regarding hypoglycemia and diabetes, and had made misleading claims that Risperdal is safer than other drugs in the same category.

Documented potential side effects of Risperidone include lactation both in girls and boys, weight gain, and development of the often irreversible movement disorder tardive dyskinesia. “Any medication that can induce lactation in boys is clearly a dangerous drug, and in my opinion should only be used when all avenues of biomedical treatments have been exhausted,” said National Autism Association executive director Rita Shreffler. “Parents are faced with extremely tough decisions when it comes to medicating their children, and extra caution should be used with Risperdal in particular given what we know about it.”

The behavioral symptoms associated with autism are often due to undiagnosed medical issues including heavy metal toxicity, abdominal pain, constipation, parasites and food allergies. Many of these issues can be relieved by more benign interventions to address the cause of the behaviors, rather than masking them with drugs.

“Medical treatments are working backwards,” said NAA president Wendy Fournier. “We're prescribed pills for a headache without addressing the cause of the headache. We must start treating the cause of medical illnesses, not just covering up symptoms, especially when it comes to the complex biomedical issues of children with autism.”

Another Johnson & Johnson’s company, Ortho Clinical Diagnostics (OCD), manufactured RhoGAM, a RhoD Immune Globulin given to Rh-negative women during pregnancy and following delivery. RhoGAM exposed fragile, developing fetuses to a bolus dose of mercury-based thimerosal. The neurotoxin was used as a preservative until OCD changed production methods in 2001. Many parents and scientists believe thimerosal to be the leading factor in the increase of neurological injuries such as autism among children.

“It’s ironic that the same company that gave us RhoGAM now stands to further increase profits from a drug that suppresses symptoms of neurological damage consistent with mercury toxicity,” commented Shreffler. “Risperdal does nothing to address the neurological injuries of children diagnosed with autism, and the potential side effects are frightening.”

Re: Autism. A most misunderstood illness of children

Hello Friends

Every now and then I run across an article on autism that offers more than just the ususal information. The following is a very comprehensive report with a lot of information that you don't hear about very often. I hope that there is some information here that might help make someones life a little easier.  I really believe that there is a cure for autism right around the coener. I think once we get the government and Big Pharma to admitt they made some mistakes we will be well on our way to solving this mystery.

Please click on the link at the bottom of this article, There is a lot more to this than I have posted here.

How To Improve Autism

In this report you will learn what causes autism or autistic like symptoms. More importantly, you will learn how to improve and perhaps even reverse autism autism in your child. By correcting the underlying causes of autism, using unique and highly effective natural remedies that are completely safe and easy to use at home. First, let’s start by going over some....

CAUSES OF AUTISM

• Vaccinations

• Environmental Toxins

• Lack of Glutathione

• Candida Overgrowth

• Viral Infections

• Foods containing Genetically Modified Organisms

• A Hiatal Hernia that disrupts protein digestion

Some researchers point the finger at the ill-conceived hepatitis B vaccination, which in 1989 started being given to newborns, as a major cause of autism. Others point to the MMR vaccine as a major cause. They are both right, as you will see.

The hepatitis B vaccination given to newborns makes no sense at all because a newborn’s immune systems is not developed at all. It can’t produce an immune response to the vaccine. As vaccines are designed to stimulate the immune system, there is nothing for the vaccine to stimulate. So it does no good. All it is good for is to make plenty of money for the drug companies, the doctors who give the vaccines, and unfortunately, it seems to be a good way to create autism.

If you are not already aware of the vaccine/autism connection, that statement may seem like an exaggeration. If this is new to you, if you are not familiar with a book which details the cover-up of the autism -- vaccination connection by the government and the pharmaceutical industry,

Click Here to read an article written by Robert Kennedy Jr. on this very subject.

Vaccines contain a slew of toxins, including mercury in many cases, which overwhelm the child's ability to detoxify. Being tiny, with an undeveloped immune system, babies and young children cannot handle the toxins and pathogens in the vaccines. (Even adults have problems. A consensus is building that the Gulf War Syndrome was caused by the vaccinations given to the troops.) Vaccines introduce many more toxins into a child then it is able to get rid of. As a consequence, the toxins get stored in cells. This toxin buildup prevents the brain from functioning properly — and leads to autism.

Ingredients in vaccines (as listed by the CDC on their website) include antibiotics, aluminum gels, formaldehyde, monosodium glutamate (MSG), egg protein, and sulfites. A child could be allergic to antibiotics. Aluminum can, when there is a silicon deficiency, cause the brain conditions seen in Alzheimer’s disease. Formaldehyde is a highly toxic carcinogenic chemical. MSG is a potent excito-toxin which can cause seizures, brain tumors, and more. Egg protein could cause a life threatening anaphylactic reaction. Sulfites are another toxin which can cause allergic reactions.

Rebecca Carley, MD reports that "What the CDC does not list is that 13 vaccines at present (and more are in the works) are actually cultured on aborted human fetal tissues (go to www.cogforlife.org for more info).”

The CDC fails to mention the ethyl-mercury containing preservative thimerosol that has been in many vaccines, and still is in some. Dr. Carley points out that the "rate of occurrence of autism in the last generation became self-evident proof that vaccines are the causative factor."

The hepatitis B vaccination is especially bad because the baby is so young when given it. Many older children develop autism after getting the measles, mumps and rubella vaccination. Because the MMR vaccine contains three strains of viruses, it introduces into a small child more viruses than it’s poorly developed immune system can handle. It literally will cause multiple viral infections in the child that overwhelm the immune system, and does lead to the development of autism in some children.

ENVIRONMENTAL TOXINS

Of course, vaccines are not the only source of toxins our children are exposed to. We live in a highly toxic world that exposes a child to tens of thousands of chemicals. Toxic pesticide and herbicide residues on food, toxins in household cleaners and laundry detergent, toxic carpets and construction material outgas toxic fumes, the list goes on and on. These toxins show up in breast milk, in infant formula, in the food you feed your infant. On their own they are not enough to cause autism or its related syndromes, but when toxin laden, mercury and aluminum laden vaccines add to the burden, the toxic overload may reach the breaking point and contribute to the development of autism.

Dr. Carley makes the point though, that there is a fatal flaw in vaccines themselves that can lead to autism, autoimmune conditions and other diseases. This is why the MMR vaccine leads to autism even though it has no mercury in it. She writes:

"What the promoters of vaccination failed to realize is that secretory IgA (an antibody found predominately in saliva and secretions of the gastrointestinal and respiratory tract mucosa) is the initial normal antibody response to all airborne and ingested pathogens. IgA helps protect against viral infection, agglutinate bacteria, neutralize microbial toxins, and decrease attachment of pathogens to mucosal surfaces....

"Bypassing this mucosal aspect of the immune system by directly injecting organisms into the body [via vaccines] leads to a corruption in the immune system itself whereby IgA is transmuted into IgE, and/or the B cells are hyper-activated to produce pathologic amounts of self-attacking anti-bodies as well as suppression of cytotoxic T cells.

"As a result, the pathogenic viruses or bacteria cannot be eliminated by the immune system and remain in the body, where they cause chronic disease and thus further grow and/or mutate as the individual is exposed to ever more antigens and toxins in the environment....

"The mechanism by which the immune system is corrupted can best be realized when you understand that the two poles of the immune system (the cellular and humoral mechanisms) have a reciprocal relationship in that when the activity of one pole is increased, the other must decrease. Thus, when one is stimulated, the other is inhibited. Since vaccines activate the B cells to secrete antibody, the cytotoxic (killer) T cells are subsequently suppressed....

"This suppression of the cell mediated response is thus a key factor in the development of cancer and life threatening infections.. The organisms continue circulating through the body, adapting to the hostile environment by transforming into other organisms depending on acidity, toxicity and other changes to the internal terrain of the body."

To recap what Dr. Carley says in more simple layman's terms, the viruses or antigens in vaccines that are supposed to stimulate the immune system's immune response, bypass the critical first line of defense for the immune system. They bypass the immune system components in the linings of the intestines, lungs and in saliva. As a consequence, vaccines do not stimulate the immune system in a healthy, effective manner. The side of the immune system that is supposed to kill the viruses and other pathogens, the T cells, becomes suppressed and ineffective so it can't kill them. The B cell side that causes allergic and autoimmune activity becomes over-active. So the immune system becomes seriously compromised and cannot work like it should. Autoimmune conditions develop where the overactive inflammatory side of the immune system starts attacking cells where pathogens or toxins are hiding. Thus the intestinal lining can get damaged. Thus Candida infections cannot be controlled. And more. Dr. Carley writes,

"The antigens present in the culture media itself [on which the viruses used to make the vaccine are grown] cannot be completely filtered and separated from the organisms cultured thereon [the vaccine's viruses]. Thus, any antibodies formed against antigens from the culture cells themselves (for example myelin basic protein from chick embryos or the 13 vaccines which now contain aborted human fetal cells) can cross-react to form an autoimmune reaction against the myelin basic protein in your myelin sheath, etc.”

Hello Everybody

I have been researching Autism for quite a while now and I have discovered many things that have surprised and even shocked. One of the things that I have been very careful not to do is offer false hope for a cure. Well, after much deliberation and serious thought, I have decided to actually begin using the word cure when referring to autism. I have been receiving more and more information about possible cures and it isn't comming from mainstream medicine. It is more on the lines of alternative medicine. One of the things that I have noticed throughout all of my research is that alternative medicine tends to deal more with the root causes of illnesses rather than the symptoms. This makes good sense to me.

The following article is an example of some of the research that is being reported on recently and I am beginning to believe that there really is a cure for autism. From this point forward, I am going to explore more about the cures for autism rather than the causes. I truly believe that we have reached the point where we can begin talking about cures without offering false hope. I hope and pray that the information that I am now beginning to explore is sound and truthful.

Family takes alternative steps to help autistic girls

Morris Twp. parents believe vaccines at fault

MORRIS TWP. -- For years, Jonathan Rose and Gayle DeLong did the best they could for their daughters, both of whom are autistic, going beyond simple special education programs and trying commonly accepted methods to improve their behavior.

Then, in April 2005, David Kirby's book, "Evidence of Harm," which explores a possible link between mercury in vaccines and the explosion in cases of autism, made them think they could do more.

Now, almost 18 months after starting their daughters on a strict regimen of alternative therapies that includes near round-the-clock vitamins and supplements, a gluten-free diet and hyperbaric oxygen treatments, they finally feel they are really helping Jenny, 10, and Flora, 6.

"Both our daughters have shown clear improvement,"Jonathan Rose said.

Hello Everybody

With Christmas just around the corner I thought it might be helpful to some to get some information about toy shopping for children with special needs. I never realized how sensitive some toy companies are about the needs of special children. It is really quite reassuring and I really don't believe it is all about the money. Merry Christmas to you all and many blessings to your children.

For the Autistic, a Gift of Common Ground

Published: November 26, 2006

ALMOST everyone knows of a family affected by autism, the disorder that can impair a child’s ability to form social and emotional connections. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says autism-related disorders are more common than cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, blindness and deafness — some of the other major childhood disabilities.

Stuart Isett for The New York Times

Clark Perry, who has autism, with his father, David Perry, outside the family’s home in Seattle. Clark’s mother, Lauri, says that she wants him to “have the toys everyone else has, so when kids come over, they see things they know and like.”

Children with autism often have a hard time interpreting emotions in others, may learn to speak later and can experience hypersensitivity to noise, light and touch. As the holidays approach, family members and friends may wonder what to buy for any children with autism on their list while accommodating their special needs.

Play is the work of all children because it lets them practice new skills, find new interests and develop mentally and physically. For a child with autism, the right kind of play at the right time is crucial. Play can help deliver some basic communication and life skills that may not come naturally.

Children with auditory processing problems, for example, may have trouble translating a verbal request like “put on your coat” into a physical action. Games like the Hullabaloo DVD Game ($24.99), from Cranium, which playfully asks children to jump to different floor pads while showing others performing the desired action on screen, combine auditory and visual cues that can help children follow directions.

Although some toys are specially designed for children with autism, many families may prefer toys from the mainstream, like the Hullabaloo game. Lauri Perry of Seattle, the mother of Clark, an 8-year-old with autism, buys off-the-shelf items rather than custom products. “I want him to have the toys everyone else has, so when kids come over, they see things they know and like,” she said. “His room shouldn’t look like a therapy station.”

On the other hand, a specially designed therapeutic toy can focus more directly on a specific skill, like maintaining appropriate eye contact.

Autism disorders fall on a spectrum from mild to very severe. Mari Stobbe, a founder of the Autism Spectrum Treatment and Research Center of Seattle, said: “It is vitally important to help children on the spectrum develop social connections, and to find common ground with typically developing children.” She said a shared interest in a toy could help foster that bond.

Ms. Perry also wants to make sure Clark has popular items. One favorite is a SpongeBob SquarePants backpack with a cloth tongue that rolls out when he unzips it. “The other kids think it’s cool,” she said.

For the past 13 years, Toys “R” Us has published a “Toy Guide for Differently-Abled Kids,” originally in print and now at www.toysrus.com/differentlyabled. It offers tips for buying mainstream toys based on factors like multisensory appeal, safety and potential for interaction.

The toys in the catalog have been evaluated by Lekotek (www.lekotek.org), a nonprofit organization in Chicago that aims to make play more accessible for children with disabilities. Each item is tagged with symbols showing which abilities the toy may help promote, like social interaction, fine motor skills or language development.

When Ms. Perry first saw the Toys “R” Us catalog, she felt put off. “It felt condescending, like we weren’t able to choose the right toys ourselves,” she said. “Clark’s interests are not that different than other kids.’ ”

But as she examined the catalog more closely and saw the symbols, she realized that it could be useful. “There are definitely areas Clark needs to work on, and the symbols show where a toy could help,” she said. “So if it saves me from spending time and money on the wrong thing, it is valuable.”

Many toys are hard work for children with autism because they stretch the child’s capabilities in language, social skills or sensory integration. While these are crucial to the child’s development, Susan Malmquist, director of educational and clinical services at the autism research center, advises care providers to balance instructional and therapeutic toys with their favorite types of toys. If the child loves airplanes, for example, provide them as a break between more therapeutic activities.

Children with autism usually have a limited set of interest areas, but those interests are very strong. So whether an interest is in animals, trains or cars, it is hard to go wrong buying more items in that category.

Many Web sites offer information and products for children with autism and other special needs. Stars4kidz.com offers toys grouped by development category, like cause and effect, or sensory play.
