There's a couple of ways you can track where sales come from
1) The easiest, as you mentioned, is just asking in the check out form.
2) Some stats programs allow you to track a visitor's path. Hitbox (paid version) allows that. In that case, you can backtrack the people that actually go through the checkout and see where they came from.
3) Another method - which is a LOT of work, is to create a separate page for each place you want to track results on. For example, one page that you promote at adland, one page to promote at ebay, etc. Then you can add an identifier to the checkout for each. That metnod only works if you're selling your own product and can modify the checkout process -- but there's no monthly cost (as there is for something like hitbox) and it's dead accurate. In order to maintain accuracy, you have to use a robot code to keep the search engines out of that page so you control who visits. Then, also have a generic copy of the page for search engines to list.
It's the most complex method, but doesn't have monthy costs and is very accurate for anyone selling their own product.
