Kathleen, now you`d say that the Serbs are crazy at all; this is just called CAKE but actually is a kind of a special bread (the dough is the same as for bread, and it is just decorated).
Each Orthodox Christian family has The Family Patron and they celebrate this day each year. The celebration is as big as are weddings (food, drinks, alive musics and guests) and the holy day starts with baking this bread very early in the morning (while making the prayers) and then taking it, along with a Serbian Koljivo, red wine and the candle to the church, and after the Holy Liturgy, the priests make a special prayer for each family/bread , offerinf the bread, Koljivo, candle and wine to God.
"Reform cake" is one of my favorite Serbian recipes.
