The Monkees was originally a TV series, then the public loved these 4 guys so much, they gained fame as an actual music group.  They really do sound great together!  Davy Jones had been a jockey before auditioning for the role, and is still riding high on his fame from The Monkees, more than 40 years after the show first premiered in 1966.
