Look what has been scaring me for weeks - photos
5/6/2009 5:04:16 PM
This little fellow has been terrorizing me for weeks as I have
heard awful scratching, banging, clawing noises under the
house and around my kitchen cupboards area.
It scared me as I did not know what it could be but knew it
had to be a biggish animal.

Today 6 May I was looking out the bathroom window to see where the horses were grazing and this fellow which I think
is a Groundhog (I am sure someone will correct me if I am
wrong) came into my view, so I quickly ran to the office to get
my camera and took these two photos from the window. I
went to try and sneak the back door open to take a better
shot but it heard me and took off running across the field and
hid in the wood brush pile.

James will bring a humane trap home and we will try and catch him. I have to have him/her out from under the house.  He
dug a hole under the front steps which I filled in with bricks,
but I have not found where else he may have dug to get in and out from.

Hi Amanda!

My father had one eating everything in his garden for a long time, and it was happy living under the toolshed for a few years, then decided to gnaw it's own door thru the side of the shed.  My Dad got rid of the poor thing, inhumanely, but it had a long life and lots of vegetables.  We also have pictures to remember him by, which I added to my parents' 50th anniversary album to remind Dad of his garden "buddy"!

Hello Alain,

hmm I do not know whether I would call him my friend...
He kind of looks a little vicious to me and I still do not know
too much about groundhogs and whether they will attack and
bite you if you try and get too close. (none in New Zealand,
so this if my first in person sighting)

As to Groundhog Day...A little late  for Phil
Punxsutawney to
turn up - he is a dollar short and a month or two late! *grin*

Hi Kathleen,

I do not have a garden in yet and not sure whether I will put
one in this year, the ground gets so hard here that is makes
hoeing the weeds etc very hard work.  Also the horses and
Llama's will probably have a field day in there!

I was surprised to see a groundhog and I did not know if they
lived here in Nebraska and the first time I have heard or seen
them in this State.

I have been advised that chopped up apple will attract them
so we can catch him in a humane cage and let him go somewhere
away from our place.  However, I am not sure if he is solo
because there has been on a couple of occasions are big
racket going on under the house like two or more were playing
tag.  This is what scared me the most, as I did not know what
animal I was dealing with.  I feel a lot calmer now knowing.
