The Name:MARY
© Georgios C Paraskevopoulos
Mary is the usual English form
of the Latinized name Maria of the New Testament Greek name Maria or Mariam
(the spellings are interchangeable), which were from the Hebrew name Miriam.
The meaning is not known for certain, but there are several theories including
"sea of bitterness", "rebelliousness", and "wished for
child". However it was most likely originally an Egyptian name perhaps
derived in part from 'mry' "beloved" or 'mr' "love".
My opinion of this name - probably correct
(Not accepted by Theologists)
Since the name Maria is used after Greek language became a global language
it could be a Greek name and not a Hebrew name. Ma+Rhea 'Μα Ρέα'
Ma=mother, Rhea=flow (ancient Greek). Rhea is identified with mother goddess
Cybele from Asia Minor and is also known as Rhea Cybele and Magna Mater
("great mother"). Rhea is depicted between two lions or on a chariot
pulled by lions.
WHY MaRhea and not Miriam? The first Christian centuries, Greeks
and Romans did not turn to the new religion. Gods and Goddesses and Semi Gods
had to be eliminated. Pallas Athena (Sofia), Poseidon (Nicolaus), Perseus (St.
George) etc. It is easy to say today that the temples were destroyed by earthquakes,
but there are evidence that all Greek Temples were destroyed by man’s hand and
by force in the name of Christianity.
